Usually Illsurian is a quiet town, where local foresters and fishermen go about there daily business with little excitement. That changed yesterday when the Umbra Carnival and their fleet of circus wagons arrived in the fields outside of town. When a contingent of Varisian circus folk came into town to buy supplies and to hang up colorful posters in every neighborhood, Illsurian was abuzz. Some more conservative folk in the town grumbled about the Varisians, muttering about the kind of immorality the performers would no doubt promote. However most were intrigued by the circus's arrival, many rushing to the outskirts of town to sneak a peak of the coming attractions.

Today morning a parade of circus folk begins marching through town in a spectacle of sights, music and drumming. Banners and streamers herald a procession of clowns, stilt walkers and tumbling acrobats, all of whom wave eagerly to the townspeople, Carnival barkers call out to the people on the street, inviting them to the carnival's opening and encouraging the curious and idle to follow the procession's end to the carnival grounds.

"Come one! Come all! To the Umbra Carnival! Thrills! Chills! Delights for people of all ages! For but a few copper pieces, come have an experience you will never forget!"

Opening up discussion. Come on down and introduce yourselves.

Everyone in the fishing town of Ilsurian is excited when the legendary Umbra Carnival rolls into town—even if the show is run by members of the much-maligned Varisian ethnic group. With strange and exotic beasts, scandalous performances, games of chance, and all the other fun of a traveling fair, who could resist such an opportunity for entertainment? Unfortunately for both the town and the circus, entertainment isn’t the only opportunity the carnival presents…

Welcome to the recruitment thread for GM Ancalima’s Murder’s Mark! This is a entertaining little module that deals with a mysterious murder, mob justice and racial tensions between Chelaxians and Varisians.

Character Creation Rules

Expand Character Creation Rules:
  • Starting level: 1st
  • Starting wealth: Average for class
  • Ability Scores: 20 point buy
  • Hit Points: Max at 1st level
  • Race: Any. If your character is human, please mention their Golarian ethnicity. Chelaxian and Varisian will be the most relevant for this module, but other ethnicities are perfectly acceptable (just be sure to explain how your character wound up in the region).
  • Alignment: Any non-evil
  • Traits: 2 Traits. No Drawbacks. Traits should have a clear connection to the character’s background, motivation or personality.
  • Restrictions: No 3rd Party material. Summoners must use the Unchained version.
  • Additional Rules: We will be using background skills.

Note about Formatting: Here is an example of how I like to format character sheets for PbB games. This exact format is not required. However, presenting your application in a way that is easy to read will make my life a lot easier and thus increase your chances of being selected.

Background Requirements

Expand Background Requirements:
  • Abridged 10 Minute Background:
Step 1: Write at least 5 concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind.
Step 2: What is your character’s goal or motivation? Why are they going to end up on an adventure?
Step 3: Describe at least 3 mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

  • Why is your Character in Illsurian? - Are they a native? If not, did they come specifically for the Umbra Carnival or are they in town for some other reason? The answer to this question can be nested into your 5 concept elements or it can be separated out into its own section. However, please make sure to include the answer somewhere in your submission.

  • RP Sample: Please provide a link to two posts from previous games you have played in, one for in combat roleplaying and one for out of combat roleplaying. First time players may instead write up RP samples for the character they are submitting. Check out
DH's Guide to Play By Post gaming
for more guidance as to how to write and format the post.

About the town of Ilsurian:
The town of llsurian in Varisia was established by Ilsur, a First Sword of the Knights of Aroden in the city of Korvosa. With the crumbling of the Chelish Empire, Ilsur wanted a militant-leaning meritocracy to replace noble rule in Korvosa, but had to eventually concede defeat roughly 80 years ago. He marched his troops to the west bank of the Skull River where it empties into Lake Syrantula, and awaited a chance to return and seize Korvosa by military force. He died waiting for the opportunity, and his army gradually transformed into a strong community of independent fishers and foresters owing loyalty to neither Korvosa nor Magnimar. The soldiers brought by Ilsur and their descendants are ethnic Chelaxians, and most of them have the strong features, pale skin, and dark hair of that group. Most of them also harbor prejudice against the native Varisians, and believe the stereotypes that Varisians are thieves and layabouts. Since very few permanent residents of Ilsurian are ethnic Varisians, this racism has rarely been a problem. Yet all that changed when Ilsurian became the latest stopping point for a traveling circus known as the Umbra Carnival.

About Me

Expand About Me:

I've been playing Pathfinder since around 2011 and I have been my group's main GM since 2013. In my real life games, I take a lot of pride in the fact that I have finished every adventure that I ever set out to run. I am a big believer in picking content that I will maintain my interest long term, setting up realistic expectations from the start of the game and surrounding myself players that I enjoy playing with.

I first started playing Play by Post games here on the Paizo forums in 2014 and I enjoy the format a lot. I like the opportunity to role play characters in ways that I could never pull off in an in person game. I like that the slower pace sometimes allows for character moments that would have gotten lost in the rush of an in a face to face game. What I don't love about Play by Post gaming is when the GM vanishes into the night and a great game falls apart, since a replacement GM is much harder to find than a replacement player. So, I have decided to try bring my cockroach like consistency to the table and try my hand at running a game! However, instead of jumping straight in with an Adventure Path, I want first get my feet wet with a module. So here we are!

FAQ

Expand FAQ:
What kinds of characters/players are you looking for?
For the PCs themselves, I am mainly looking for submissions that have personality. Your chances of being selected will go up exponentially if you have painted a clear picture of who your character is and how I can expect them to interact with the game world. For players there are two primary things I am looking for. First, I am looking for strong role players who will aim to interact with the world, the NPCs and most importantly, the other player characters. Second, I am looking for players who seem like they will be consistent posters and committed to completing the module. Have you ever spent a week actively RPing in a thread, even though the GM was on vacation with no internet? If so, you are the type of player I want!

Is there anything that will hurt my chances of being selected?
Min-maxing won’t help your chances, especially if your crunch choices have seemingly no correlation to your character’s background. A posting history that indicates a pattern of bailing on games without any explanation or creating a hostile gaming environment for other players is a definite bad mark. For players with no prior experience on the boards, make sure you have spent some time learning the format through guides or reading through other games. Making a few missteps is totally understandable, but seeming totally illiterate in the style of the boards would definitely hurt your chances. Remember, if you are unsure about how to do something, you can always just ask!

How many players are you recruiting?
I am aiming to recruit around five. However, the exact number will be variable on the number and quality of the submissions.

What will be the pace of the game?
I would like players to commit to at least one post per weekday and at least one post on the weekend, except under special circumstances (with the expectation that those special circumstance would be communicated as soon as possible).

Are you recruiting based on party role?
Yes and no. Party balance is certainly something that I will be keeping in mind. However, my ultimate goal is to find my favorite submissions that I think will be interesting together, not to form the perfect five-man party.

Do I have to create an alias?
No. However, if you are not using an alias, please use spoiler tags for your application, separating out your Crunch, Background and RP Samples into separate tags. Also, try to have one post where your application can be reviewed in its entirety.

Can I RP in the recruitment thread?
I would prefer that there was no RP in the recruitment thread. While I understand the appeal, it tends to clutter things up, making it difficult to track questions and new submissions. Please use the RP sample portion of your application to demonstrate your roleplaying ability and understanding of the PbP format. However, I still absolutely encourage discussion in the recruitment thread. If you think someone's character is cool, feel free to let them know! See a way your character might know another character? There is no guarantee that you will both be selected, but a little extra inspiration never hurt anyone!

Do you plan to continue with the same group after this module is done?
There are certainly other adventures that I would love to run and I am open to continuing with the same group. However, for now I am just committing to completing Murder’s Mark.

Why did you cut secrets and relationships from the 10 minute background? Can I still have them?
Sure. If you want to provide additional information because you have inspiration for them, please go right ahead. However, I am not requiring them since there may not be time in a short pre-written module to utilize those sections for every PC. Also, as a player, I sometimes find those sections a bit limiting. Not every character needs big secrets surrounding them or will have lots of friends and enemies in the immediate area. I am far more interested in the development of your character’s personality.

The 10 Minute Background format doesn't really fit the way I want to write my character. Do I have to use it?
Absolutely not. My goal with providing a format is not to force your character into a box, but to help paint a clearer picture of the kind of background information that I am looking for. The actual style of your background matter to me far less than the character itself being interesting and well developed.

Recruitment will close - Monday, July 2nd at 8:00AM EST/GMT-4
Please feel free to ask any questions either here in the recruitment thread or via PM and I will try to respond as soon as I can. Also, I will do my best to offer feedback via PM to those of you who submit their applications early. I look forward to seeing all your submissions!

Rex continued to look between Mary and Quinn. When they finally agreed he gave a nod. "Good. We have a deal then."

As they headed to the market, he looked over to team Zarfu. He shrugged at Mary. "They didn't seem to bad when we talked to them." His head tilted as they smacked the safe again and cursed. "Though, perhaps a little more...er...brawn than brain..."

However, his puffed chest out when the woman in the apron showed up and declared them heroes. Walking over, he gave her a charming grin and waved his hand, "Oh, really, that was nothing." However, he made sure to slightly flex his arm in such a way that the mild lingering mark from cat claws in his shoulder was particularly visible.

No worries. Gaming should be fun, not stressful. It's clear the amount of effort you put into each post, despite your hectic schedule. I have nothing but appreciation for the fact that you stepped up to run the game after our previous GM left, got us through an entire adventure path book (better than every other PbP Adventure Path I have been a part of) and have been an all around been a great GM. As far as I am concerned you have nothing to be sorry for and should enjoy a well-earned break!

...Of course I selfishly hope that you recharge and get the PbP itch again, because I would love to play with you again. But either way, I wish you nothing but the best. :)

Evelina beams at Maddie. "Yeah. Sure. I can try."

As she hovers around the room, she starts planning out how she is going to make a bird dress. She is distracted briefly, as the twig fighting boys bring back warm nostalgic memories of her own childhood. She watches them for a bit, before walking up to the boy that appears to be losing and whispering a few tips as to how to catch his brother off guard. When the other kid inevitably gets tripped onto his face and the boys start to argue, Evelina slinks away from the scene of the crime, trying to act as if she had no involvement.

Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

With the warmth of the house and joy of the children playing, Evelina is just starting to feel at home. However, the story of the former mayor horrifies her and returns her to a state of unease. She is relieved when the clothes arrive and she is able to distract herself. Giving Nadya a nod, she replies. "Yeah, I should be able to fix 'em up alright."

Craft (Clothing) - Martok's Pants: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Oops. Sorry Martok ;p

Eager to make the dress for Maggie, Evelina begins lopping fabric off of Martok's pants. However, in her rush she cuts them at a strange angle. Oh No. Quickly she tries to fix them, but ends up having to cut them too short. Darn it...well um...he's a boy maybe he won't notice? Holding them up, she realizes there is almost no chance he won't notice. ...Or...well...maybe he won't mind...? she thinks nervously. Passing the pants to Martok, she mumbles guiltily, "Sorry, I think I screwed 'em up. I probably should have measured a bit better first..."

Looking at the fabric she has retrieved from the pant, she thinks. That isn't all that nice for a little girl. She looks down at her own oversize blouse. I bet I could use some of this fabric to make it a little prettier. I mean I need to fix it anyway, I can't wear it looking like this..

Craft (Clothing) - Evelina's Shirt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Evelina pulls off her own shirt, putting her own Taldane one back on instead. Taking far more care this time, she cuts open the back and stitches it back together to be closer to her waist size. She also takes a little bit off the bottom, so that the shirt doesn't dangle to her knees.

Craft (Clothing) Maggie's Dress: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Learning from her mistake with the pants, Evelina realizes she is definitely going need to use Maggie for reference if she is to not mess this up. Approaching the twins, she speaks gently to the little bird. "Whattaya say, Maggie. Want to come and get fitted for your own dress?" Knowing how protective Maddie must feel, she adds, "With your big sister's permission of course..."

Once she has permission, she brings the little bird over to her working station. Sympathetic for how frightened the little girl must be, she does her best to try and make this fun for her. "I was thinkin' something either like this...or like that. What do you think?" she asks earnestly, as she points to a few designs. Whichever one Maggie points to, she smiles encouragingly and replies, "Yeah, I like that one too!" As she begins measuring and making the wing holes to try give her plenty of maneuverability. Wanting the little girl to have something nice, she takes even more care than she did with her own shirt. She uses Martok's pants as the base, so that the thicker fabric will provide warmth, but uses the blouse fabric to add details to the edges.

Finally when the dress is complete, she helps her put it on, taking care to cover the mirror with her hand, until the fabric covers it once more. "Well, Maggie. I've done a lotta odd job, but you've given me a new one for sure. Evelina Silverblade, bird fashion designer!" she says with a laugh. "Let's see how you can fly in it. Good. Wow! That's great! " With a big smile she points over to the twins and says, "Why don't you go over there and show 'em how good you look!"

Evelina looks about ready to break out into a story, but then sighs, "Yeah, I guess later is probably better...As far as what happened here? Well, there ain't much to that story. We've been tryin' to find the source of this winter, you see...an' then we got ambushed here by those fey. One of 'em has attacked us before...an' we've had alotta trouble with fey in general..." She point to the fallen troll, "That was a new one...He kinda just...uh...joined the fun...Not sure if he was with 'em or not..."

As Cithembi joins the conversation, Evelina tries to be helpful to the new folk, whispering, "Guys, He's real good at this lip reading thing. You don't have to talk all loud and slow." Evelina would never do such a thing...

Once Astrid finishes the letter and begins cursing, Evelina looks confused. "I don't understand. Why would she think you're a deserter? I mean, I ain't ever seen you run from a fight..." Looking concerned, she adds, "What would that mean anyway?"

Sounds good to me. Could be fun to have a scaled down Jason Bourne moment when something attacks me.

Also, I didn't officially pick my background skills yet. Just dumped points where it made sense for her character . Based on her background, I would think that the social skills make the most sense (Bluff, Diplomacy or Sense Motive maybe?). Do you have other suggestions?

Also, generally I had a few skill points for Knowledges that I tossed in Kn: Local and Arcana, but I'd more than happily switch those to cover any gaps. It's hard to decide what you know, when you don't know what you know ;)

Evelina immediately dives for the clothing, all the while loudly professing her heartfelt gratitude. She takes quite some time going through the bundle, occasionally remarking, "Oh, wait! Can I trade you for that?" as the others reach for clothes. Once she has put together an acceptable outfit, she finally turns her attention to what's left of the weapons. Grabbing one of the daggers, she spins it around a few times before tossing it upwards and catching it in her other hand. Tossing it back to her main hand, she slashes it through the air once, before giving a nod of approval. "Yeah, that'll do in a pinch..."

She is cheerfully adding the dagger to the top of her pile, when she finds herself staring into the empty eyes of a dead bear. Wide eyed and arms looking ready to buckle under the weight, she looks up at Astrid with a slightly pained look. "You mean, wear this over all my other clothes!?!" she whines. But before she can protest further, her eyes land on Yuln, his blackened nose and his stump of a leg. The obstinance in her voice and demeanor dissipates, as she replies, "Alright then...and thanks. That's real thoughtful of you..." Changing into her winter wear and pulling the fur over top, she steals a glance at her reflection in window. Pulling the bear's head over her own, she lifts her arms and goes "Grrrr!". Letting out a laugh at the unconvincing display, she thinks to herself, This thing is actually kind of cute...

Returning to the pile of clothing, she begins going through it once more. "For Blaze..." she explains as she puts aside an outfit that she thinks would suit the mysterious woman. Once she has added the additional clothes to her stack, she remarks, "Speaking of which, we should really go find her...and then get going..." Thanking the councilwoman profusely once more, she begins heading for the door.

Taking a dagger, cold weather outfit and cleats...and bear furs ;)

Definitely A, he doesn't have enough bulk to even fill that cup, let alone anything better.

An A cup represent a 1 inch difference between your chest and bust, which is not a whole lot. For band measurement, 34 is the national average for women in the US. For a guy I would imagine it would easily be in the 40s. For a male elf... Who knows. I don't think there is a source book for that...

I created a survey about the different Paizo Adventure Paths. The idea was based on a discussion on Reddit that lots of posters come to message boards asking "What is the best AP for X?" and it might be nice to have some data that people could look at.

I figured I would share the survey here because:
a) The more answers, the better the data
b) People here might be interested in the results too

So here is the survey:

Honestly, you GM probably shouldn't allow this...

Your formula blissfully ignores the 97% of the time that the staff doesn't produce gems, where the effects range from bizarre to outright dangerous. The formula doesn't account for all the variables that those random effect would introduce. Are they really going to be able to use the wand every six seconds when they are suddenly growing and shrinking, getting effected by slow and fireballs are randomly shooting everywhere? More importantly, followers aren't mindless slaves. Realistically, they are going to make it about a minute before not wanting to do this anymore. Even if you take away all the side-effects, its still a monotonous task to do for eight hours a day.

I wouldn't try to convince him at all for your own sake too. He might allow it just to screw you over. Believe me, he has a lot of options.

Background:

Avari knows little about her father. She only knows that he was an elven adventurer, who seduced her mother while passing through Trunau. However, the elven traits she inherited from him proved to be a hindrance growing up in the violent land of Belkzen. For a people who valued strength and survival more than anything, her slow growth compared to the other children made her the subject of mockery . The other children affectionately nicknamed her "Orc Food" and even her teachers seemed to get amusement from her's ambitions to one day become a great warrior.

However, the doubt of others only drove Avari to work harder. She spent every spare moment she had, running, swimming, climbing and swinging every weapon could get her hands on, until she was every bit as strong as her peers. When Avari finally came of age, she recited the Standing Vow with pride and earnestness. She was fully prepared to finally prove her worth.

Appearance and Personality:

Avari has dark brown hair and eyes, that only seem to accentuate her generally stern demeanor. Her slightly pointed ears are the only clue to her elven heritage, as her physique is muscular and her skin is tanned from training outside. Avari puts little care into her physical appearance and rarely smiles. However, she is always well-armed and ready for a fight, keeping her coming of age hopeknife on a chain, underneath her armor.

Avari has taken the Trunua motto, "live free or die trying", deeply to heart. She is almost solely focused on the pursuit of strength and shows no mercy to those who threaten her home. As a result, many people find Avari to be humorless and a little obsessive. However, she is a loyal companion to those who earn her trust and steadfast defender of Trunua.

Associations:

Known Ally:
Eloise Fadarack (Avari's Mother) - Avari and her mother have a complicated relationship. She can't help but be a little judgmental of the choices her mother made, as a younger woman. However, her perception that her mother is vulnerable in such a dangerous part of the world, has made her extremely protective and has driven her to become strong.

Unknown Ally:
Cymbir ??? (Avari's Father) - Avari resents her father for abandoning her mother in Trunua. As a result, she has largely tried to forget her elven heritage. However, the older she gets, the harder it has become for her to hide her curiosity about him. Secretly, she would like to find him.

Known Enemy:
Haxum Scorpell (Avari's Rival) - Avari blames a lot of the bullying she experienced as a child on Haxum, as he was usually the group ringleader. However, his mockery turned to hate when Avari managed to best him in a bout during their teenage years. Since that day, both Haxum and Avari have been obsessed with trying to one up one another.

Unknown Enemies:
While, Avari has ruffled her fair share of feathers within Trunua with her delightful personality, the outside world is where many of Avari's unknown enemies might lie. Her father was an active adventurer in a dangerous part of the world, who was every bit as adept at making "friends" as Avari herself. Identifying herself as a daughter of Cymbir and asking a lot of questions about him could have unintended consequences.

As far as availability, I check my PbP games every morning around 7:30-8:00am EST during weekdays, but I also check for updates sporadically throughout the rest of the day. Weekends can be a little more inconsistent, but generally as long is the game is active enough for me to have something to post, it is extremely rare for me to post less than once a day and fairly common for me to post multiple times if the game is really moving.

Thanks :)

It'll be interesting to see how your character turns out. Avari would probably get along with a dwarven paladin.

Here is Avari Fadarack, for your consideration.

I hope the way that I did her NPC associations is okay. I used her mother as the known friend, largely because I imagine Avari being someone who hasn't had the easiest time making friends within Trunua. I contemplated writing up a person who she might be close friends with, but then I considered that role might be better filled by another PC, especially if there are other Trunua natives in the party. If that is a problem, let me know and I'll write up something more specific for the known friend.

Isla waits to see what either Geliglee or the kobolds do. Noticeably frustrated with being unable to understand or help, she curses her mother for not letting her learn Draconic.

Don't be silly my girl! What use will you ever have to speak with dragons! Put that book away this instant and study your Dwarven! That way if you ever meet a gentleman from the house of Garess you can impress him! Gee, thanks mom...I may not be able help out right now...but its good to know that, if we fail, I can get derided for it by that pompous ass back at Oleg's in two different languages...

I know its not my turn, but I figured sulking is probably a free action ;p

How many days did it take your players to completely clear Horn? Where did they rest? I've counted 8 to 12 CR6 encounter equivalents, which amounts to 2 to 3 adventuring days minimum.

My players pretty much did it in a day.

Details:
They tricked Jurak, allied with Ezra and Zikomo and found Hexor and Vexor's control amulets before meeting them.

I think their only fights in the horn were Kumanda (plus a few boggards) and the oozes. The former was a rather easy fight, as they found out about Kumanda's ambush spot from Zikomo and ended up coming upon him from behind. The oozes were quite dangerous, though. The sleep effect is pretty debilitating.

They did have to fight Jurak eventually, after they started the ritual. He did pretty well considering they were level seven an the Arcanist and Alchemist were barraging him with fire damage.

They haven't encountered Callistae yet. She is heading their way tonight.

So, I'd heard that Sir Balin was a beast...but I don't think I fully appreciated how much of a beast he was until he nearly TPK'd the party...Props to my players for how they turned it around though.

Spoiler:

Combat with Sir Balin started quickly, as the dhampir inquisitor was proudly displaying his new holy symbol. They end up fighting in the hallway, which was a mistake given how effective Sir Balin is in close quarters. The inquisitor decides that he wants to taunt the knight and uses his Iron Circlet to take on the appearance of Timeon (who had been killed by the Draugr, after the party had tricked him into fighting with them). As the fight wore on the swashbuckler and inquisitor both ended up unconscious and the juju oracle and fighter (crossbow user...whose player was absent) were badly injured and not in a good position to win the fight. Then oracle throws out her last spell...charm person.

This saved them temporarily. However, they knew that Sir Balin wasn't below half health, whereas they were in bad shape. Any re-initiation of combat would almost certainly be a TPK. So, they start stalling. They return to his cell and begin pretending to searching for another way out. The oracle convinces the charmed Sir Balin that they were under the influence of magic when they attacked him and cruelly tells him that he was in fact fighting the real Timeon (the dhampir inquisitor). This gives the swashbuckler, who had Infernal Healing active, enough time to regain consciousness. Overhearing the conversation in the next room, he sneaks away to hide the real Timeon's body in one of the Draugr coffins. Returning to the group, he tricks Sir Balin into giving him his healing potion (although the group narrowly avoids killing the dhampir inquisitor, when Sir Balin initially wants to use it to heal "Timeon").

They convince Sir Balin that they need to escape, leading him up to the manor floor. The swashbuckler tells everyone that he is going to go "scout for the exit". Pretending to sneak away, he instead winds the corner and goes to Grumblejack's room. He informs the ogre, who had been ordered not to eat anyone in the manor (after he had proclaimed his desire to one day eat Tiadora), that there was someone in the manor that he was allowed to eat. The swashbuckler then leads the excited ogre straight to Sir Balin, while pretending to run away.

This leads to a fight between Sir Balin and Grumblejack in which the ogre manages to land a crit (thanks to the new longsword they had given him). Just as Sir Balin sees through the party's "We just can't seem to hit this ogre!" act, the swashbuckler announces, "Guess the jig is up...oh, also...your squire is dead..." before proceeding to literally stab Sir Balin in the back for the kill.
