Time for good old Chelaxian racism to make this complex character moment simple.

"No he's not your son. You might have been his mother once, but now you're just a disgusting corpse that doesn't know it's dead yet. My father would be as revolted by you and your participation in these hideous acts here as he was with me coming back from Egorian not in service to our Lord-Mayor anymore. You're an even bigger disappointment than I was. Speak your last words, thing that was my grandmother, and get yourself to the boneyard with your abomination husband."

*ahem* The historical Hattori Hanzo was a samurai, not a ninja, though he did work with the peasant militias of the Iga region, which many historians credit as the historical basis of modern ninja myths. Unlike his many pop culture portrayals, he was not particularly famous for crafting swords, but rather for saving the life of Tokugawa Ieyasu and his fighting skills with... a spear.

Well I work in juvenile mental health so "working" could mean playing magic or 5e with the boys or it could mean wandering the woods with a clipboard asking a moody teenager about his feelings every 15 minutes or teaching them how to solve for x or make an omelette. 16 hours of caring for people who are fundamentally illogical is very taxing and it's all one day after another so come Friday night I am wiped.

So I'm just spitballing here, we haven't played a lot yet so I might be off-base with your characters, this is just based on what I've seen thus far.

Ok then. Halthar is a god of stars who wants to bring his light and splendor to a world that doesn't have much. What if we were trying to have a mortal version of that? Trying to be anti Blades in the Dark in our own Blades in the Dark way? Mender's trying to beat death, Tarnikos wants to uplift his fellow refugees, Briar and Velaris are trying to find meaning in a nihilistic society and Hutch is trying to... manipulate a stifling bureaucracy? I don't know about that one.

Could our goal be to remake Duskwall in Halthar's image both socially and politically?

I'd like to add something to the setting: I mentioned on my alias that Vurespanian culture traditionally places great importance on the distinction between the soul and the body as far as what constitutes a "person". They practiced necromancy and the reanimation of corpses as well as autopsies, study of cadavers and similar interactions with dead people because they saw them as raw materials to be used for the betterment of society after the passing of the person who inhabited them.

Given that this was a society that placed all the "personhood" as it were into the soul, and none of it into the body, slavery in any fashion would be more of a luxurious indulgence in cruelty rather than anything to build an economy around. Why feed and house slaves to pick your crops when you can just have zombies do it? Thus enslavement of living people, that is, of people that are still people because they still have their souls, is something that would personally offend anyone who is from Vurespania specifically to almost the same extant as someone from modern first-world society.

I really think Bonded Mind is flat-out the best option for everyone right now.

Bonded Mind is basically free unintelligible communication within line of sight. If we want to be all sneaky and stuff that's going to be straight-up invaluable. and You're already getting max HP this level, and toughness is retroactive. Bonded mind only works at its best if everyone has it and the next level we'll all get a feat at is 6.

EDIT: Plus, it would have spared us the entire Tarnagius-Kethaera conflict at the saltworks since there'd be no problem making his intentions clear no matter who's around.

Couple of things about this time that I was going to bring up IC back at the nest, but since we're doing this now:

1) I am (still) absolutely positive either the boatmen are going to try to screw us over or the Dottari or someone will have a boat patrol waiting to intercept us because this has just been way too easy. The Bellflower Network wouldn't have any problems running all the slaves away from Kintargo if all it took was a few bumps on the head and a pocket full of coins.

2) I honestly thought those chumps were going to be a bit tougher, so I thought the fight was sure to last at least a couple of rounds, meaning they'd bust out of the glue, and it'd be like 5 on two with me and Phil. Odds we can survive, but not too difficult.

3) Given that Tarnagius and Phil were not going to have time to get onto the boat before more backup than we can handle showed up, so the plan (that I couldn't explain IC because that would mean revealing too much in front of people we don't know) was for the boat to take off with the overwhelming majority of the party (Pylos, Kethaera, Jules) in case the boat was attacked or the crew needed to be persuaded while Phil and Tarnagius stalled for time and then made themselves scarce before the cavalry arrived. I only mentioned killing everyone as a sarcastic OOC aside. Remember, my original plan didn't have anyone fighting at all. It's only when we failed to trick the front doorman (again, a bard without bluff? :P) that fighting even happened in the first place. Tarnagius is a pragmatist, not a psychopath.

We as a party don't mechanically have a whole lot of skills needed to pull off nonviolent solutions with multiple moving parts. If Pylos needs to be as incognito as possible, and Jules is off picking locks and sneaking about, we don't have anyone who can lie that is vital. Luckily we're about to level up, so we can address that, but a bigger issue than personality right now is ability, or at least I think so.

In that case there may be weapons as well. I don't think we should be getting too far ahead of ourselves planning too many operations at a time. We don't even know how much in the way of resources this cache will provide for us. If it's all our combined weight in platinum the plan we go with will be very different than if it's 50 silver pieces.

He accepts a coffee from Laria.

You are right about the church knowing who's there so the way I see it we have a few options.

1) We could have one of us actually honestly join. As Pylos said, he was offered a job by Barzillai himself. Young Lady Aulorian will be beside herself, but it's not unheard of for bastards to pursue careers in the church. Barzillai is an Inquisitor himself, but if you offered to be a pair of eyes and ears near the bottom of the local religious hierarchy, you would in fact get in the way we want, plus you may be able to feed us information on both church activity and Barzillai's reactions to it.

2) As is usually the case, a halfling is likely to go beneath anyone's notice. As long as you don't approach anything the church will fight to protect, like documents or holy relics, it's unlikely anyone would question a messenger or a cleaner. We could write up some sort of high-level-but-utterly-administrative-and-meaningless letter or we could see if the cleaning and whatnot is done by acolytes or halfling servants. If it's the latter, obviously that's the easiest say to scope out the place properly, perhaps leaving a window unlocked or something.

Tarnagius turns cold himself.

Defense mechanism or no, if you actually want him dead, learn to turn it the hells off. You're asking me to act against my nature and the way I have been for literally my entire life. Can you manage that yourself? Can you keep your head on a swivel and out of your pants for a minute? In the fight after the protest I had to save you. In the fight at the hideout, Nisha had to save you. In the next one, who even knows if we will be able to? Up until now, you have been a liability. Get your head where it belongs or go home. Maybe I've been insensitive, but I haven't risked getting us all killed or discovered yet.

With that, he stands up, pushes his chair in, and leaves.

I'm going to court to gather intel. If you are going to live up to your own standards and start actually helping the revolution, I will see you there. If you'd rather run off with a scullery maid like you usually do, I'm sure I'll hear about that too, but be in or be out. Stop making us protect you without contributing anything but dirty jokes.

Tarnagius starts, scowls slightly, sighs, cracks his neck then turns to face Pylos. Evidently he's been simmering on this for a while. His voice starts off a low growl but slowly rises until he eventually begins yelling.

You're right. I'll apologize the second you two he points to Pylos and Kethaera start treating this like a revolution and not an opportunity to troll for sexual gratification. Last time we had an argument about this you insisted that you know better than anyone what we are up against but it's obvious that you are totally blind. You bring a devil into our fold, joke about making me crossdress when discussing going to court to MEET FACE TO FACE WITH THE VERY MAN WE ARE FIGHTING AGAINST, insist that we go and rescue Nisha - a proposition that ended with me carrying Kethaera's unconscious body halfway across the city, I might add - then immediately start trying to seduce her as you both lay bleeding and nearly unconscious! Do you realize what your corpse would mean to this revolution?! You get cut down, and our entire operation has to move and those three rodents you are defending will have to leave this precious home of theirs, the coffee shop will have to close since it's not like Rexus or Laria can risk staying here, and the rest of us will probably hang because if a Thrune goes and dies in some small-time gang hideout, Barzillai can't just let that go. If you're dead your mask is useless and half the gods-damned city will be crawling with guards and dottari and bounty hunters and probably even devils he glances sideways at Blosodriette because everyone will need to know exactly what it was you were doing there. Every single time you step out to fight something you risk ALL OF OUR LIVES. Start being responsible for once in your sheltered, cushioned little life.

He turns to Kethaera And you! I don't want to speak for the rest of the group but did you join this revolution to get rid of Barzillai or to solve every single individual problem in this city and **** half its population in the process? We are at war against an enemy that vastly outdoes us in strength and numbers and supplies and basically every other way and you want to go and recruit a fairy dragon and talk to some friends of yours? The priests were completely neutered when they got rid of Shensen. They're scared and nearly powerless politically unless they're coming from the Asmodean Church which will absolutely not help us! We need actual allies, who can help us actually hurt Barzillai's operations. Thieves, spies, soldiers. People who will respond to Barzillai's violence with violence. You saw what happened at the protest, gathering commoners with bowed heads and painted signs will only get people killed. Getting kittens out of trees and such may help you feel better about yourself, but it's not getting Barzilai any closer to being dethroned. Is this a revolution or a social club to you?

He seems to calm down slightly after his rant. And lastly, Jules. I admit, I have been horrid. You and Phil seem to be the only ones with anything even resembling a clue here, and I apologize.

Hells, I broke a man's knees over one of these gifts once back in the Capitol. Fool thought it'd be funny to give Barzillai a bag of dog s!+!e. Called it the product of his labor.

Ramblings aside, he changes to more important news.
