Role:
Declín is a human brawler, but will head straight to fighter at level 2. I'm planning on going fighter the rest of the way, but always open to another class or a prestige class if the story takes him there. He's a follower of Iomedae and a resident of Roslar’s Coffer.

Backstory:
It was dark inside the earth. Declán reached forward, ripping open a seam to the surface, and stepped through into the lush meadow. The scent of heather brought a smile to his face. Spring had come at last. He stepped forward into the tall grass, letting his hands brush the tall stalks. He felt the warm sun upon his face. Lifting his gaze to the azure sky, he stretched his arms wide and let the radiant energy fill his soul. He planted his feet wide and rested his hands upon his hips. This should be my life, he thought.

Mindlessly, Declín reached for the security of his longsword. The wire wound hilt fit his hand perfectly. Matched to perfection and balanced precisely. The silver cross guard held intricate patterns of shapes with empty recesses prepared for precious stones that were not yet set. As the warrior relaxed and surveyed the landscape, a stripped snake slithered through the grass grass and curled itself at his feet. Unnoticed. It lifted its body high and coiled around Declín’s scabbard, lifting the blade a from its peaceful rest.

Declín’s eyes open with a start as his hand snatches the wrist of the would be thief. His other hand closed to a tight fist. Once. Twice. Three hits to the face, and the thief drops to the floor. As he stubbled to his feet, the stench of Declín’s own body brought a wave of nausea. He steadied himself with both hands on the table and began to heave over and over. A rapid succession of convulsions. Nothing came up. He’d already emptied it on the table.

The brawler took a step and his hand slipped on the wet table. Wiping his mouth, Declín glanced around the half filled bar. The few patrons there give him no head. It was a common site to see Declín drunk again. The brewmaster shook his head at the pugilist as he wiped a few glasses clean, but a barmaid came to his side quickly. She dropped a towel in his hand as she went about cleaning his mess. Declín wiped the bile from his face and beard and brushed back his hair. The barmaid comforted him with kind words and offered him a bowl of fresh water to cleanse his hands. Her voice was soothing to Declín. Without a word, he grabbed his backpack, still slung across the back of the chair and head toward the door. ”Will you be back?” the barmaid asked.

”I don’t know.”

"Declín… son… I love you.”

Declín stumbled into the city with the echoing words slowly fading into the past. He wanted to keep them there. A distant memory swimming in his head as he stumbled down the alleyway. His legs weren’t fully recovered. The uneven cobblestones challenged him with every step. Just beyond the backdoor to the Shady Griffon, Declín stopped. The urge overtook him. He leaned against the wall, untying the drawstring to his trousers.

The ping of a hammer striking an anvil grabbed his attention. The years folded together and memory of his father’s armory filled his senses. The smell of the fire. The taste of sulphur. The glare of the forge. The cold touch of steel. His sword was his lasting reminder of those days.

--------------------

As a young boy of 13, he was an apprentice smith to his father and aspired to be a paladin and Knight of Ozem. The raids by the Twisted Nails in 4707 AR changed the course of his life. With his father killed defending their retreat from Roslar’s Coffer, Declín and his mother were forced to flee. They returned the following season but found their home destroyed. Only his father's sword was recovered in the ashes of armory. Destitute, his mother was forced to find work were she could, and Declín's spirit was broke. He soon turned to the bottle and wasted years of his life brawling in most every tavern in the Lastwall, most of which he doesn't recall. He returned to Roslar’s Coffer, and with the help of his his mother, Margie (whom Declín calls by her first name), he tried to straighten up and even volunteered for the local militia. However, after several relapses, he was kicked out.

Personality:
Declín's mood is one of melancholy intermixed with moments of laughter and light heartedness. This is his past-self shining through the brow-beaten exterior. He's lovable and, at heart, he is an optimist. However, that was rooted out of him a decade ago. He misses his father and regrets the decisions he's made that led him to his current station in life. The dreams he once had as a child, seem distant and lost.

With his character arc, I'll want to explore the personal pain he's endured due to his poor decisions of the past and present. He'll need to come to terms with them and find a reason to change.

Description:

Declín has dark brown eyes that are often hidden by his unkempt, long brown hair. He usually sports a mustache and beard that hides the weather-beaten lines of his face. He wears hardened leather lamellar armor that, while well oiled, is used and worn. His cloak is a dark, greenish brown and tattered on the ends. On his back is a wooden shield strapped to a leather backpack. The only noticeable item he carries, is a well-crafted longsword with a silver inlaid cross-guard and pommel which he keeps hidden under his cloak.

Motivation & Goals:

Superficial:
* Avenge and come to peace with his father's death
* Protect his mother (and those he loves) from the coming threat
Secret but Conscious:
* Pay the price for his decisions
Deeper and Subconscious:
* Find personal redemption from the pain and disappointment he has caused to himself, his mother, and friends
* Restore his faith in Iomedae
* Find inner peace with himself.
