Played this at Gencon...and I was just taken aback...how did this even get approved?
Mass Combat rules - took a little bit to understand the process however it was not that bad. Once the group realized how things worked, the second mass combat encounter went fine and everyone seemed to have fun.
This was worth 3 stars.
Troop rules were outright horri-bad. Single characters fighting troops does not appear to be play tested...how arrows are shot and don't even need to hit, they just do automatic damage is beyond me. Troop movements, how troops take damage...all bad bad bad. The judge simply sat down, said these rules are bad, and a player will effectively die each round. Afterwards, I looked at the rules for troops (thinking maybe it was the judge) but no, the interaction between troops and single player characters is just *that* bad. I can't state this any more...bad.
The last encounters looks like the author threw together hap hazard encounters, just trick the players into something that should kill them ...the whole thing was smashing things together, far too little real rules clarifications for a "thinking" group,...just bad. retire it now so Paizo doesn't slight any new players.
