Note... There's another FREE Pathfinder monster on Loot, today.

This is a fun one. The sulak is a critter from Babylonian mythology also known as the demon of the privy. It apparently attacked when a man was using the privy and...ahem...at his most vulnerable.

You can check out the Sulak at no charge today on Loot.

Look for more Creature Chronicles previews in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned for more info about Creature Chronicles and other Blackdirge Pathfinder products coming soon.

Well, I do hope some Pathfinder folks can get some use out of my Lovecraftian Gods article. It's mostly fluff, and the feats and magic items would be pretty easy to convert over to PF. The article is primarily about how to integrate Azathoth, Nyarlathotep, and Yog-Sothoth into a fantasy campaign, and that part is pretty much edition neutral. However, YMMV.

We absolutely intend to come up with our fair share of originals and/or look to mythology, but a lot of these concepts fit great with what we want to do, so I'd just like to explore all open avenues. I had a feeling about the three you mentioned. I remember a Paizo employee specifically mentioning Kuo-Toa as being off-limits when I spoke with him at a trade show once, come to think of it.

Thanks for your help so far!

I'll be blunt. I think using any of the names on your list in a 3rd-party product – with the possible exceptions of boggard and yak folk – is a very bad idea. And I think it’s a downright terrible idea if the monsters you plan to publish are going to closely resemble WotC’s IP.

Again, avoid the risk by using names and monster concepts that aren’t owned by WotC (or anyone else).

BD

Most of these names are the property of Wizards of the Coast, and using them in a Pathfinder product (or any 3rd-party product, for that matter) would almost certainly get you into trouble (kuo-toa, thri-kreen, and yuan-ti are definite no-nos).

If I were you, I would look to real-world mythology for your critters or come up with your own unique monsters. There’s no risk there.

At first, I'll be primarily publishing bestiary products, with an emphasis on nuts-and-bolts monsters such as animals and vermin. I'm currently working on a product that will expand the selection of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals found in the PF Bestiary. This product will also feature rules for PCs, such as carrying capacity for mounts, stats for animal companions, and relevant information for spellcasters (where the critters fit on the Summon Nature’s Ally Table, for example).

Down the line, I'll be publishing small products that feature new monster templates, prestige classes for martial characters, and an assortment of short, focused player-option material.

NICE.

I have some experience with what WotC pays freelancers, and I suspect Paizo pays close to the same amount. So, since a 32-page adventure comes out to 20,000 words, I'm going to ballpark the cash value for winning RPG Superstar between $1,000.00 and $1,200.00.

Honestly, though, the real prize is not the cash. The real prize is something that takes most writers years to accomplish, i.e., getting your foot in the door with one of the best RPG companies in the biz. Trust me, if you want to be a writer in the RPG industry, that's worth far more than a thousand bucks. =]

Hi all

This is the the premier issue of Goodman Games’ 4E GSL magazine Level Up. It's now available in both print and PDF.

Here’s a quick peek at what you’ll find in Level Up #1.

Roads to Adventure: Rift of the Hill Giant Thane

An exciting 7th level adventure written by Goodman Games’ Harley Stroh

Blackdirge’s Bestiary: Natural-Born Killer

Six new dinos…I mean behemoths for your 4E game.

Deities of Áereth: Gorhan

The first in a series of articles on the gods of Áereth, the setting for the popular DCC line; Deities of Áereth: Gorhan explores the worship of the god of war and valor. Includes new feats, magic items, and a paragon path for worshippers of Gorhan.

Azagar’s Advice for Adventurers: Choose Your Weapons Part I

The infamous hobgoblin warlord dispenses his own brand of curmudgeonly wisdom on the subject of choosing the proper weapon. Includes a dozen new feats that will help you choose the right weapon every time.

GM Gems: Fiendish Foes

Three new monster templates that allow DMs to make their monsters and NPCs a bit more “fiendish.” Includes the following templates: demon knight, hell beast, and hellfire adept.

PC Pearls: Weapon Focused Warriors

Three new paragon paths for martial characters focused on a particular weapon. The cudgel thug gives club-wielding rogues a real wallop; the crimson cleaver lets fighters bring the pain with the greataxe; and the arbalestier actually gives the ranger a reason to use the crossbow.

Plus:

  • A Picture Tells 1,000 Words: Spurned
  • Wizard’ Corner: Never Split the Party by Andy Collins
  • Jack’s Ultrashort Reviews
  • Dear Archmage Abby
  • And much more!

For more information about Level Up, including subscriptions, visit us at: Goodman Games.

Well, I must say, I do like the title of this product. It certainly has a nice ring to it. ;-]

In all seriousness, this is the kind of product that makes me sometimes wish I still played and designed for 3.5E. It looks great.

BD

Hi all,

This the fourth release in our Critter Cache line, and as you can guess, this one covers the fey. The goal with this volume was not only to fill in some of the blanks left in the 4E Monster Manual, but also to reintroduce some classic fey monsters from previous editions, such as the spriggan, cu sidhe, and boggart. In addition, information on the two classic fey courts, the Seelie and Unseelie is provided in this product.

Look for more 4E critters next month, when we reintroduce some old fiendish favorites with the release of Critter Cache: Daemons.

OPEN CALL FOR 4E GSL
“BOOK OF RITUALS”

Goodman Games is looking for writers! This is an open call for 4E game designers who want to contribute to Book of Rituals, a hardback compilation that will see print in the fall. This is paid work-for-hire. All accepted submissions become the property of Goodman Games, and contributors receive 3 cents per word, printed credit, and a copy of the published book.

Book of Rituals covers heroic level, paragon level, and epic level rituals. It includes rituals for binding, creation, deception, divination, exploration, restoration, scrying, travel, and warding. Submissions should be limited to rituals within the scope of the book.

Here are the guidelines for submissions:

  • The open call is open to anyone. Both amateur and professional writers are welcome.
  • The submission period ends February 28.
  • Each submission is one ritual.
  • Each submitted ritual must be saved as a separate Word document of 500 words or less.
  • You may submit as many submissions as you like, but each submission must be contained in a separate email.
  • The submission must follow the format and style of the [example ritual] example ritual. For fonts, use Times or Arial, in a 10- or 12-point font size, as demonstrated in the example.
  • The submission must be PG-13 or milder in nature.
  • The submission must show a firm understanding of 4E mechanics.
  • Submissions will be rejected for poor grammar and spelling, inability to follow the format guidelines, and unfamiliarity with 4E mechanics. Submissions that are over word count will also be rejected.
  • We do not need submissions with rituals related to summoning monsters.
  • By making a submission, you agree not to submit the same material to any other publisher until December 31, 2009, or until your submission has been rejected or accepted. Accepted submissions will be commissioned for exclusive publication by Goodman Games at a rate of 3 cents per word. Rejected submissions remain the copyright of the author.
  • Send submissions to bookofrituals@goodman-games.com.

If you have additional questions, please post them to our forums.

Had a few ideas, but only typed up one other than the one submitted... I discounted this because the utility seems limited and it's essentially just three spells in one item. That said, I still really like the name and the visuals, so it was a tough choice.

GLOVE OF SANGUINE RUNES
Aura faint abjuration; CL 5th
Slot hands; Price 9,500 gp; Weight --

Upon donning this threadbare silk glove the wearer feels a sharp pinch, and blood soaks through the last digit of the wearer’s index finger. As a standard action the wearer can paint symbols on any surface with the blood, creating an arcane mark but suffering 1 hp of damage that cannot heal while the mark remains. The mark persists (and the blood never fades or smears) until the wearer removes the glove or dies, and a bond of vital energy connects the wearer and object bearing the mark:

  • The wearer feels a throbbing pain whenever someone else touches the object – enough to wake the wearer if asleep but not disrupting concentration or causing damage.
  • A marked door holds tight as if subject to an arcane lock spell. Other objects add the wearer’s Constitution modifier to their hardness values and break DCs.
  • The marked object bleeds when damaged. Destroying the object inflicts 2 points Constitution damage and stuns the wearer for one round.

CONSTRUCTION:
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, alarm, arcane lock, arcane mark; Cost 4,750 gp

Wow, this is a great item. Even though it is a "spell in a can," this is the right way to do a "spell in a can." Great flavor, innovative use of existing mechanics (which is a big plus for me personally), and the item is not overpowered.

If I were judging, this would get a thumbs-up from me. If the item you actually submitted is better than this - well, let's just say, I like your chances. =]

Cool name, too.

BD

Run through the list of bad item stereotypes; if any of your items come anywhere near those, chuck 'em.

If you still have a couple left after that - and this is just my own personal opinion - choose the item the does one "really" cool thing over the item that does a bunch of "pretty" cool things. I think it's easier for the judges to see your innovation with a simple item over a complex one. In other words, shoot for gloves of storing over a helm of brilliance.

However, I have absolutely no idea what the judges are going to favor; so Clark, Wolfgang, and Sean could read this and think I'm smoking the crack. Keep that in mind with any advice offered by your fellow board members. =]

Not true. Goodman Games certainly needs designers with 4E design skills (I oughta know), not to mention that Mongoose is re-launching their quintessential series in 4E. There are also a number of PDF publishers, such as Adamant Entertainment, that are actively looking for 4E designers.

Beatin' Stick of Colossal Ass-Kicking: This short baton is made of ironwood and etched with dwarven runes that translate to the following: Ain’t nobody above an ass-kicking.

The beatin’ stick acts as a +5 club with the following properties.

  • Three times per day, as a swift action, the wielder of the beatin’ stick of colossal ass-kicking can designate a single target within 60 feet for a “beat down.” If the target of the “beat down” is struck with beatin’ stick of colossal ass-kicking within 3 rounds, it suffers the effects of a crushing despair spell, and cries “like a little b!tch” for 10 rounds.
  • Once per day, as a standard action, the wielder of the beatin’ stick of colossal ass-kicking can declare, “it is on.” When “it is on,” the wielder of the beatin’ stick of colossal ass-kicking gains a +4 enhancement bonus to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution, and is hasted, as the spell. The duration of “it is on” is one minute.
