Description:
Amongst fellow Gnomes, Beagan certainly blends in well. But in a "non-Gnomish community" (as he likes to call them), his striking red hair that flows from his head and face certainly stands out in a crowd. In the wind, the bright red strands look almost like fire that has envelopes the head (and feet) of the gnome.
Beyond that though, Beagan carries many typical gnomish features. He stands at 3'4" and weighs approximately 40lbs. Despite the slight gut that he carries, he's in better shape than most of his family through all of the traveling he's done. He values humor in all things above all else. His goal in his hopefully-long life is to make as many creatures in the world laugh. He is incredibly proud of his talents, though to a fault. He takes disappointment very personally and is determined to be loved by everyone, even if it requires a bit of magical compulsion to do so. Background:
Beagan was born and raised in Whistledown, one of the largest gnome communities in Varisia. From an early age, he showed great promise in not only making people laugh, but in some of the dormant magical abilities that most gnomes carry. He was well-loved in his community, even among the non-gnomes that resided in town. However, as his passion for making people laugh with his jokes and antics grew, he quickly became bored with entertaining the same group of people with very similar tastes as his own. He knew that if he was ever to achieve greatness, he would need to branch out into unfamiliar territory. And so, Beagan packed up his things and moved to Korvosa.
Life in Korvosa was much more difficult than Beagan expected. He wasn't used to people dismissing his off-color (and very random) jokes. Despite the bitter disappointment he felt, he was also stubborn and resolved to succeed at his goal, no matter what. After a few months of making no progress, Beagan happened to stumble upon a group of first-year students of the Acadamae at a bar (as the gnome was very keen of alcohol. He felt it really brought out the "funny" in him.) He quickly befriended the new students, hearing of the suffering they've endured as new students from being used as cheap labor and guinea pigs (He found their stories sad, yet also hilarious.) It was from them that Beagan developed an idea. Knowing of magical potential within himself, he began to learn how to harness and nurture it via his friends. He discovered that through enchantment, he could magically compel others to befriend and appreciate him. Soon, people were listening and noticing his performances, whether they originally wanted to or not. And as the arcane energies in his blood began to awaken, other aspects of the gnome's ancient First World ancestry began to reveal themselves as well. He found that with just a mere touch, he could cause one to fall into a fit of laughter. His reputation as a "funny guy" began to quickly rise, and some of the more influential citizens of Korvosa started inviting him as entertainment to parties and gatherings. After his first year in the city, Beagan had finally reached the status he dreamt of. But, inside, he felt guilty. He knew that he only became popular because he used his magic to charm people into liking him. His use of compulsion spells grew out of control and he hastily started relying on them on a near-daily basis. He understood that he had created a problem. Knowing that he had no way of starting over in Korvosa, the gnome began looking away at other possibilities for another fresh start. And then, one day, the idea jumped out at him. Some traveling gypsies were talking about the western town of Sandpoint in passing, discussing some of the great artists that have come from there. After a bit of research, Beagan discovered that the town had a very-well respected theater that rivaled Korvosa's own. And, preferring the life of a small town over the big city, he knew this was a perfect fit. Numerous letters and inquires were sent, but no response ever came. And after months, the gnome made up his mind to go and try anyway, even without an invitation. Beagan didn't hold much stock in religion. But for the first time in his life, he was certain that Desna was smiling down upon him as he arrived in Sandpoint early one morning, witnessing townsfolk setting up pavilions and tents for their yearly festival. The smell of food and ale clung to the air. Surely, he was certain that fate had brought him here on this day. |
