I'd buy that box !!!

Hi !

I only have one PbP under my belt, and I am now able to know what I like and don't like. I would very like to join in a group that :

- Like to role play a lot ! Yes action and character progression are fine , but what I'm looking for is mostly character interactions with great role play.

- Post once or twice a day per player, no more, to be able to post quality instead of quantity.

- Can wait in combat for real init order to take place, because acting before your turn is messy in my opinion. It's no big deal IMO if a combat round takes 1 day. It also gives the GM time to prep more.

- Is willing to play for a long time, of course, we always want to go for the long run...

- Is composed of 3 or 4 players + 1 GM rather than 7-8 players like we see a lot... Like I said, I'm willing to be a part of a group that has fun together and a great chemistry, rather than to absolutely smash heads and be a power group...

I'm not proposing to GM because I'm still relatively new to pathfinder, but I'd really like to play in a game that has all of the above. I don't mind any game (AP or module), just know that I GM Rise of the runelords though, so if it's that, I'll have some meta knowledge but try to keep it ok in game...

Anyone interested with those criterias ? Are there other people that think like me ?

Hi everyone,

I feel like I should explain my departure, since we played together for a good chunk of time now and I really appreciated you guys, and also I don’t want to be seen as the kind of players that just leaves the games for no good reasons, or « vanishes from the planet », like Hajar said...

Before I explain myself tough, please let me clarify that I am the only one responsible for leaving, it’s not anyone’s fault and it’s fine if you enjoy this experience and I didn’t quite so much. Maybe PBP is not my thing, I don’t know, since it was my first experience and I’ll have to try it again someday. So again, please don’t see my arguments like they are targeting someone, I just want to express my feelings towards this game and clearly explain why I left, and being 100% honest is the best thing I can do IMO.

So, at the beginning, in the recruitment, Hadassa was asking for players who loved to role play, and said the rules didn’t matter that much to him. I thought « what a good opportunity, I really love to role play and I’m new to pathfinder and PBP ». So we began and it was a blast ! I really enjoyed being the barbarian that didn’t quite belong at first and that tried to desperately find an ally within the group… With Anjali that was really good at role play and that kinda liked Avenka (Anjali liked everyone, but the barbarian felt special around her), I found I had my ally (and a player that thought like me) and it was really fun. At some time later, it was almost boys vs girls, and with the Yazi flirting around, Dhavyn being a bit harsh with people, it was just great. Yes we did the « action stuff », but it was secondary to the chemistry of our group.

Later on, I hit my first (minor) bump : combats. Maybe I’m too strict, but I’m the kind of guy who prefers things done in order, and I wanted to do some strategies related to initiative order (ie : do not go in front of the caster or the archer, wait to see which spell effect is on and then react to that…), but people posted regardless of their init order, and everybody seemed to prefer it that way, to save time and not have to wait after others that posted later in the day… I complied, even though I found it rather sad, it was like init didn’t matter after all, the only thing that mattered was to play fast, but again, maybe that is just a format thing necessary to PBP… So I kept going without complaining, because after all, we’re a group and we must go with the majority, and that technical aspect was not going to bring me down…

Second (major that one) bump : Anjali left, and then Hadassa the GM (not particularly in that order, I don’t remember which left first)… Since then, it felt to me (although GM_Pace did a really great job!) that this game was not the same anymore. Role play has gone down A LOT, too much for me. A simple example is recently with Khayal « saying » he’s not fit to continue, but people just kept going in spite of that, not even a word, like it didn’t matter that he died (I know it was OOC by Khayal, but just seeing his state should have been enough to at least pause a bit)… It’s like the only goal now was to go fast fast fast into the action and finish the book, no matter what. Sorry if I sound negative, it’s only how I feel… I felt like that since those last 3-4 weeks and I had already told GM_Pace that I would leave the game, that it was not for me anymore (again, to no fault of his or anyone’s)… I just kept going to try to do it smoothly and « in game », but it was no more fun for me, and each week was a bit less fun than the one before.

Third and final bump (it didn’t cause my decision, it just accelerated it) : We are in pathfinder, in Golarion, I want to immerse myself in a fantasy setting and this game allows me to disconnect from reality, which I really, really need. Maybe I’m too serious and maybe I don’t have a sense of humour or whatever, but seeing Michael Jackson just killed whatever little fun I had left. Again, I don’t want to sound critical or give the image of a spoiled brat, but it was just too much for me, and like Dhavyn said (for different reasons), when it becomes a chore, it’s best to leave.

Those are my reasons, it’s not one event in particular, it’s just a global downgrade of fun for me… Again, it’s fine if that formula is what you need in a game, we all have different tastes / experiences with rpg, and that one was not for me anymore…I hope you all understand that I have nothing against anyone… I just wanted to put it on the table and not leave like a savage. I consider myself a "good player", just not the kind of players that fits this group anymore.

I really wish you a good time with legacy of fire, and I hope that if we see each other in the future, there will be no hard feelings !

Guys, it was fun, but I must leave now for personal reasons. GM_Pace has my ok to play avenka. Good luck for the rest ! Hope to see you in the future maybe...

oooh, come on man!

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka is ready for action, hoping if it comes to it that she'll be able to protect the beaten Khayal. She dares not say to him to stay in the back though, thinking his honor and pride would surely be hurt.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

As soon as they reach the bottom of the well, Avenka notices Khayal's state and gives him her potion of healing.
There friend, it should help you a bit

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka will follow behind Hajar :
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka laughs and responds to Bartan :
No problem friend, but you can drop the "lady" with me, ah ah !
And she helps him carrying the body.

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Though Avenka is about half her HP, it would be better to keep our healing potions for others that need it more, she can take some more punishment without being in real danger... That's why I keep my potions for now...

Hi everyone !

First, let me introduce this thread concept : Yesterday, I talked GMing with a colleague, and gave him this solution to his problem (which I'll talk later in this post) and he was very happy with it and said it would help him a lot, because he never GMd like that and was always frustrated with that situation. I thought about it and saw no reason not to share it with others. I don't know about you, but I always feel like I've grown as a GM in the last 20 years or so, but I still have so much to learn and am still so far from my (unreachable?) goal of quality.

I didn't see any thread like this, so I'm sorry if something like this already exists. Usually, someone has a problem and asks a question and people answer, but I thought : what about just creating a thread where all GMs give general advices, tips, tools for other GMs, no theme, just ideas that made life easier in their games that others could use, you know, just sharing experiences and good results, something they didn't see in rules books, but just tried because they had an inspiration.

So I came up with two of my own (for now). It's nothing fancy or revolutionary, just little ideas that maybe could benefit other GMs. It's not a thread to ask questions about a problem (there are plenty of those), but rather to give general advices for others to use...

Idea # 1 : Perception checks and players that know something is coming because they have to roll :

This was my colleague's problem. He tried to bluff (make them roll when there was nothing around them, but he found it irritating in the end). My two cents : What I do in my games, I ask for players to roll 5 "passive" checks before the game and I note them in a spreadsheet. Every check that can be made without the character trying to do it is rolled and noted, with their bonuses of course if they have some... So for example, if the character wants to find something, I make him roll because he is actively trying to perceive something, but if it's for an ambush and he is not aware that his perception is sollicited, then I use their passive rolls and the players don't know about it. When those 5 rolls are expired (it can be 2 hours later of 6 sessions later), I ask them to do another 5... My colleague found it really interesting, not very long to do and 100% transparent for the players. It can be used to perception, but I found it rather useful for social interactions also (the check VS bluff)... Players don't have to know that the NPC is trying to bluff them...

Idea # 2 : Knowledge of characters in the long term :

Sometimes, as a GM, I tend to forget details about previous sessions, and if you play for a long time, you forget a lot of details. One of them are knowledge rolls you made them do for XYZ situation. It happened in the past that a player asked me if he knew of that beast, that location, etc... I didn't remember if I told him or what roll he had on his dice, or even sometimes if he did indeed encounter that creature at all. My solution : A spreadsheet in which I note all the knowledge checks I made them do and the result they had, with the info I gave them about that roll at the time. So when 6 months later the same creature pops up in front of them, I just go to my spreadsheet and tell them that either "no, you don't know that because you rolled a 5 the first time you encountered it", or "yes, you know ABC", or "roll me a knowledge check because you never did before for that creature"...

So that's it for now about me, I hope I helped a little, and I would be very interested in knowing what you do in your games to make it easier, what you find works with your players...

Avenka follow closely to be sure the giant doesn't do anything suspicious...

Perception in case...: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka will try a punch on the big guy :
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Non-lethal: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka doesn't act this turn, analyzing the battlefield and trying to figure out what Hajar and the others do.

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka attacks the gnoll in front of her :

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka will continue with gnoll-bashing, assuming she still can cleave :
Attack #1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Damage #1: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Attack #2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Damage #2: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Avenka attacks the gnolls. I can't see the encounter map, so I'll try to position myself to cleave, but don't mind my second attack if it's not possible

Attack#1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Damage#1: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Attack#2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Damage#2: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka cleaves at the monsters, again with rage : (Again -4 AC)
Attack # 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Damage # 1: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Attack # 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Is the gnoll still alive ? I'd like to know before I do something, because I would move toward the other creatures a little farther...

oh ok, thanks ! :)

So in the example of the 6th-level sorcerer, if he was at 5th level instead, then he would have to use the magic device skill because he would not be able (at that level) to cast that spell ?

Mmh, I have the same problem, but it's been more than 3 years since the last post... I'm from Canada and tried with visa and mastercard...

I have a technical question. Please remember I'm new to pathfinder :)

I prepare for when the pcs will go to thistletop and I see Grogmurt, the druid goblin, has a wand of produce flame. I've read about wands and I wonder : How is Grogmurt able to use that wand ?
1- He doesn't have the spell Produce Flame
2- He doesn't have the use magic device skill (at least 1 rank would be necessary to make the DC 20 check)...

Do I miss something ?

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Avenka cleaves while raging at 2 gnolls (the one up to her and the other besides him).

Attack #2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

EDIT: She now has -4 AC because of rage and cleave for the round

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

Female Human Female Human Bar3 | HP 29/45 | AC/Touch/Flat 18/12/16| Fort/Ref/Will +6/+2/+0 | Init: +1 | Percep: +2

I'm waiting initiative order to act...

Thanks to everybody, great advices ! I'll try different things and hopefully I'll find the perfect balance for my group.

@GreyFox776 : I try to do the host/client thing with the same computer (like you said, I would take the client instance to go to tv), but I don't know how to "link" those two instances to the same game. Do I need to start a server in the Files option ?

Oh thanks, I'll try that tonight :)

Another question regarding maptool : do they get to control their pcs or do I do it for them if they have a pc computer ? If they go beyond a blocked vision, do they see the other side ?

Thank you all, I think I'll try different methods...

Oh dwarven forge are really great, but on the expensive side unfortunately...

With maptools, yes, I did the vision blocking option, let's say with a closed door, but when the pcs opened it, they were invisible on the other side, so I had to hide maptool from them to click on the player with GM's view, then put back player's view and put it back on tv, and they found it too long, maybe because they are not patient or maybe I really was too long or doing this too often due to lack of experience...

So my question : if players want to draw a map (not their characters, just the players to help them out), do you forbid it, saying like thegreenteagamer that they don't have minimaps, or do you allow it ? Or would you allow it only with a DC 15 or DC 20 dungeoneering check maybe ?

Ok, so I know many threads treat this subject, but I need advice for something specific. We just had our 5th game of rise of the runelords yesterday (I won't spoil anything here), and since the beginning, I'm trying to figure out the best way to do "dungeon" or location exploration...

1- I tried on one game to just describe them the location they were in, kind of "you turn left, then walk some 50 feet and there is a closed door in front of you...". One of my players got frustrated because I wasn't drawing a plan for them, and after trying to do it himself, he just abandoned and rather made a logical plan with words rather than drawings, kind of left, left, right... The experience was not satisfying for anyone.

2- In another game, I did a lot of prep and cut tiles piece by piece and when they moved their minis on the map and opened a door, I added another piece to let them see further. It was not a good-looking result, just blank paper, but my players didn't seem to care and seemed to prefer that option, but honestly, I found doing that prep extremely long and boring, and I won't do it again (it's not just the players that need to love their experience, isn't it?).

3- In the game yesterday, I switched to maptools, and I had "players view" on on my TV for everyone to see, but the thing is, it's in a dark place, and many times, I had to move the screen just to my computer, add a monster or recheck the map with the GM view to be sure of where they were going, and then put it back on TV, and they found the experience too long for what it brought to the game.

It just seems there is not an optimal option both for my players and myself as a GM up to now... I think I'll go with maptool just for the encounters in broad daylight, when I will be able to let them see all the map and monsters, and for the dungeon parts, I'll go back to minis. The thing is now, do I let them "guess" the exploration part, or do I give them the answers ? Do I give them the map, do I just skip to the encounters and important stuff, or do I let them figure out everything ? Do I just tell them to roll survival/dungeoneering and tell them info regarding their scores ?

I really don't know how to handle this... They often argue with me when I tell them they are lost, and they say "if I were there, I would see the rooms and I would orientate myself, but just with words, I can't see that the corridor angles at 30 degrees east...".

SIGH !!! GM in desperate need for the ultimate way to do this, all advice will be appreciated. Thanks !

I have a simple question and I can't find a clear answer anywhere, and I would like to know if it's possible, so here it is :

I GM and I'm the only one who has a computer in games, so I would like to use maptool LOCALLY, no network or anything, to show them maps on TV with the "fog of war" option on. I am new to maptools, and I don't know how to have my map entirely black when I put player's view on. I have put vision night, gave the PC a torch, and I see the circle with the radius around the PC, except I can still see the rest of the map also, which I don't want because they will see exactly this when I turn on the tv to show them. Is it possible with just one instance of maptool to shut the vision of the rest of the map, or is it only possible when you play online on a network when players have their own vision and the GM another ?

Thanks !

EDIT : Sorry, I found it, it's fog opacity, all the tutorials I saw on youtube had another version I think and it was set on default...
