Flushing a deep red, Findlaine narrows her gaze to Laurel and Zurkha. "Please, I'd love to show you. It'd be a shame if you were to have an accident and fall into it, though."

Resisting the urge to scold the group for making their only female member potentially trudge through some miscreant's waste, Findlaine stops herself on account of the fact that if there was anything dangerous to be found she'd be happiest if it were her that found it. It was her duty, after all, to be the shield that guarded these people in the worst of times. Why does the worst of times have to smell so damn bad though? Findlaine returns to the group with the vials in tow. "Any of you good with alchemic things? Not really my area of expertise."

Yeah, we're gonna be pretty handwavey about it, for sure. Jenner can do anything that you would be able to afford, and as you level up we're just gonna say that continues to stand. He's just going to become the colony's premier source of magical item creation.

Nearly ready to admonish Zurkha for sending the poor goblin in by himself, Findlaine calms herself down when she finds Nosh is successful. "Great job, Nosh!" she begins, slashing the goblin a wry smile. "I'll refrain from asking where your knowledge of disarming traps and locks come from, of course. Wouldn't want to make any undue assumptions, after all."

Of course, Filona. This is not Rise of the Runelords. This is SUPER RUNELORDS!
Also, if you're questioning on the basis of encounter difficulty, this fits into the parameters of an epic encounter. For random encounters I roll 1d6+APL-3, and your APL is 2 (because we have six players). From there I spend the xp total as I see fit to make it interesting.
Sorry for getting all meta about game mechanics, but I figure I should explain my methodology for how I plan on running things and all.

I will suggest that in Enara's case she may want invest in buying doubling rings instead of getting multiple magic weapons. Transferring runes only takes one day and costs 10% of the value of runes being transferred, so it's a super useful ability.

As they enter the previously locked room, Siné nods at Rissi's suggestion. "I would imagine there are going to be some seriously negative associations with the interrogation and the execution prep rooms. We should be ready in case any more malevolent spirits manifest."

Placing her hands on the handle of the door to the interrogation room, Siné will focus on it and see if she can glean any information about this place's past.

cool, gonna read some stuff about Abadar

While Sinésiel certainly knew plenty about the Master of the First Vault, she wasn't entirely all that understanding of his faithful. She'd grown up being taught to help the poor and destitute of Absalom, and the "never give handouts" mentality of the faith had always seemed heartless. However, even though her and Talib hadn't exactly shared too many personal details, the man was making her realize that maybe her first impressions lacked nuance. While she did not join him directly, she bows her head, closes her eyes and whispers a phrase after he finishes his prayer.

"So it is judged."

The brief respite is nice, and Sinésiel can't help but smile as Talienda dozes off on her shoulder. She draws her silver holy symbol and cradles it in both hands. So foolish to think the Dawnflower would choose a naive child as a representative, she thinks, her smile for Talienda's warmth becoming wan. Too bad for Her, though. What my mother healed I will prevent with my shield. What my instincts fail I will study. I will earn Her blessing with my blood, sweat and tears. Resolved to protect the others, Sinésiel grasps the symbol tight. Images of her mother's embrace tug at the corners of Siné's mind, and she feels a new bond with the silver implement.

Vigor renewed, Siné takes a hand off the symbol and runs her fingers through Tali's hair to try and softly wake her. "The Dawn Brings New Light," she whispers. "All we need do is emerge back into the world to see it."

"A pleasure to meet you, Primrose. I'm afraid that I can't recall a Josef, myself, though my exhaustion-addled mind may be getting the best of me," Ramona replies. She turns to Zay and gently pats their head. "And you as well, Zay. If you're not, in fact, an intelligent squirrel and instead a shape-shifter of some kind please do any of that out of the view of the colonists." The last person she turns to is Aurelian, and she appears to think back for a moment before responding. In a tone both exhausted from the events of the days prior as well as tired of the newfound mistrust from everyone in the colony, she replies. "Unless I'm mistaken you spent your time on the Peregrine using sword-training as a cover for inundating our crew with innuendo," she says with a half-hearted grin. "I hope that should do to alleviate your suspicions of me. I think I've got nothing to do but trust that the lot of you are who you say you are."

"With that, I should get straight to business. During the last few weeks, you’ve shown your importance to the colony, and many of you have exhibited incredibly useful talents that can help us further. I would like for you look for clues about the missing colonists’ whereabouts. Studying the bodies and equipment of the shapeshifting creatures you defeated may reveal something useful. It’s also possible that people here in the colony might have seen something that may help you. Last, you might want to search the colony and the surrounding area for any suspicious-looking tracks, signs of struggle, or drag marks that might point us to the right direction, but it may be like trying to find a needle in a haystack unless you have an idea of where to start looking.
“I’m afraid I have to ask you to hurry, since we don’t know why these monsters were kidnapping our people. If they wanted food or destruction, they wouldn’t have taken the victims alive. As you can imagine, everyone tends to assume the worst, and every passing hour is painful to those whose friends and family are missing. Please bring me back good news as soon as possible, but at the latest in six days from now. I don’t believe I can keep the people calm much longer than that, and those taken might have died from hunger or thirst by then.
“I must return to my duties—I’ll try to do whatever I can to help the people recover from the attack. The recent events have caused morale to plummet in the colony, and some people just want to go home. But before I go, please tell me if there is something I can do to help you with the investigation.”

I need to commission art of Emarel the maid now, nice.

As the group cleans themselves up and divvies out the treasure, they hear a bloodcurdling squawk come from the room behind them. "You! Kill! Lizard!" The broken sentence comes from a creature that looks like a humanoid crow with oily black feathers, glittering eyes and a sharp beak. It stands about five feet high, and it emerges into the room in a charge. Given the creature's approach and the wicked talons on its hands, diplomacy seems off the table.

Enara (craft): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Emarel gets the leather object free from inside of the beast without much trouble and without getting his hands dirty. It appears to be a boot—part of a matching set with the half-eaten corpse not too far off.

Tilorean and Jilvi inspect the statue of Calistria. The only magical aura coming from the statue comes from inside the compartment that Tilorean quite easily figures out how to slide out. Inside is a golden religious symbol of Calistria and a rune-emblazoned whip.

The treasure, in total, appears to be a pair of Daredevil Boots, the religious symbol worth 15gp and a +1 Striking Whip.

Shooting Zurkha a withering glance before turning back to Delma, Findlaine straightens up. "We would be rather well suited to that, I think," she says, pointing back at the half-orc with her thumb over her shoulder. "Especially that one. No harm will come to your father, I assure you. "So long as we don't use my sword to do it," Findlaine says, putting her hand over the hilt protectively. Taking care of her holy weapon meant being picky about when to use it, she had learned. "The moving, though, that I can help with." The young elf flexes lean arm muscles under her armor, making a mock show of it. It has been brought to my attention that the rules on magical items are not 100% clear on the requirements needed to transfer runes and whether or not you need Magical Crafting to do so. I will be taking the more favorable reading until errata'd otherwise: as a 1 day downtime activity you may transfer a rune as long as you are a high enough level and make a crafting check of appropriate DC to the items level.

So, in the case of the two runestones the party now has, it would be a 1 day activity with a DC 16 Craft check to transfer them to a weapon. Transfer from a runestone is free.

Lemure 3 v. Electric Arc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Emarel's electric arrow grazes the lemure who is most wounded and gives the one with lesser wounds a hearty zap. Since they were already engaging in what one could consider pained groaning it is hard to tell if they even take notice.
Lemure 1 takes 3 electricity damage and lemure 3 takes 6 electricity damage. Gotta remember that inspire courage bonus!

Any onlooker would be horrified to see blank-faced Enara twirl around the lemure and fell it with one stab of her dagger. The victory didn't even bring a hint of expression to her. That onlooker wouldn't understand that her face was just that way from the draining effect of the two arcanists' humor.

Rexus moves forward to nestle himself between Emarel and Jilvi. "Now this is a tactic I can get behind!" he says, clearly proud of his joke. Once in position, he goes through his spellcasting routine and throws a glob of acid at the lemure that has been dog-piled. It hits right at the creature's face, killing it immediately and splashing some acid onto the two adjacent targets.

Reflex (Hemdar): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Emarel's arc of electricity seems to be effective, killing one of them outright and the other conveniently stumbles aside and is only grazed by the spell.
Grimple 1 is killed and grimple 4 takes 3 electricity damage.

Lucius fumbles his attempt to demoralize, though his sloppy swing manages to graze the grimple thanks to Enara's distraction on the other side.
Grimple 4 takes 5 slashing damage. Yay flanking!

Jilvi lashes out with her whip and just barely misses the grimple. It does giggle with delight at her colorful words.

Enara, taking advantage of the opening afforded by Lucius's grazing blow, runs her rapier through the grimple in front of her and finishes the fey creature off.

Hey all, I think I'm going to put us on a 24-hour timer for combat posts on weekdays. If its been 24 hours since a round started I'll just bot whoever has yet to go in an effort to keep things moving at a decent pace during combat.

If anyone has any objections to that please feel free to voice them, as obviously I know everyone would rather have personal control over their actions. I just know that games on the forums have a bad habit of falling apart and being stuck in small combats for extended periods of time is a surefire way for things to get stale.

Soon after Verona and Daiki prepare themselves three goblins emerge from behind the cart with dogslicers at the ready.

Goblin 1 (and Daiki):

Readied Attack (Daiki): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage (wakizashi): 1d6 ⇒ 5

Attack (Goblin 1): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage (dogslicer): 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

One of the goblins rushes forward at Daiki, and like two Tian samurai in a Jininese tale, they lash out with their blades at the same time. Both warriors land their blows, dealing significant damage to one another.
Daiki and goblin 1 both take 5 slashing damage.

Goblin 2:

Acrobatics (Goblin 2): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Attack (Goblin 2): 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 1 - 4 - 2 = 7

Another one of the goblins jumps up onto the cart then grabs a glass bottle with its off-hand and chucks it at Kano. The bottle misses her by a pretty wide margin, though it appears the creature will be fetching another soon.

Goblin 3:

Attack (Goblin 3): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage (dogslicer): 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

The last goblin goes for Perri, who, being yet to act (and without his massive shield at the ready), takes a slice to his leg.
Perri takes 3 slashing damage.

I am going to bot Enara for this round, I had forgotten they were on vacation.

Enara Rolls:

Attack (rapier): 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 1 = 19

Attack (dagger): 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 1 = 19
Damage (dagger): 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8

Enara, rapier and dagger drawn, strides into the room to flank the grimple that Tilorean attacked. She stabs the one in front of Tilorean, running the wounded creature through. Seeing the creature felled, she whips around 180 degrees and slices at the grimple behind her, finishing it off as well.
Man, Enara's dice rolls are independent of poster it seems. Grimple 3 and grimple 5 are dead.

I'll be saving my reaction for specifically if Zurkha gets attacked again this round. For my Glimpse of Redemption it would be the enfeebled effect (something tells me I won't get much mileage out of stupefying a boar).

Experience 1,405/2,000 | Level 1 | #001: Burnt Offerings | Part 2: Local Heroes | Day 2 (Sunday, 23 Rova 4707)

Folks from town gather around to watch Daiki perform his katas and marvel at his form. When he finishes, townsfolk cheer him on and some of the young men come up to ask if you could teach them how to do that. A young woman wearing robes distinctly Iroran approaches you after the boys stop crowing around you.

"I see that you, too, walk the path of self-perfection," she says with a smile. "You should come by the House of Blue Stones sometime and practice the forms alongside me. I haven't had a proper training partner since young Tsuto Kaijitsu left town." Hearing the bell ring to signify noon is closing in, she gives you a small bow before turning to approach the town square. "I am Sabyl Sorn. Think on my proposal, if you would."

At noon, Father Zantus and his acolytes wheel a large covered wagon into the square, and after recounting the short parable of how Desna first fell to earth and was nursed back to health by a blind child whom she transformed into an immortal butterfly as a reward for her aid, they pull aside the wagon’s cover, releasing the thousand children of Desna—a furious storm of swallowtail butterflies that swarm into the air in a spiraling riot of color to a great cheer from the crowd. Throughout the rest of the day, children futilely chase butterflies, never quite quick enough to catch them.

Lunch is provided free, at the expense of Sandpoint’s taverns. Each brings its best dishes—this event is as much a marketing push by the taverns to win new customers as it is to feed a hungry crowd. It soon becomes apparent that the darling of the lunch is, once again, Ameiko Kaijitsu, whose remarkable curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead easily overshadow the other offerings, such as the Hagfish’s lobster chowder or the White Deer’s peppercorn venison.

A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken the stage. He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

Goblin Song

GOBLINS CHEW AND GOBLINS BITE,
GOBLINS CUT AND GOBLINS FIGHT.
STAB THE DOG AND CUT THE HORSE,
GOBLINS EAT AND TAKE BY FORCE!

GOBLINS RACE AND GOBLINS JUMP
GOBLINS SLASH AND GOBLINS BUMP.
BURN THE SKIN AND MASH THE HEAD,
GOBLINS HERE AND YOU BE DEAD!

CHASE THE BABY, CATCH THE PUP.
BONK THE HEAD TO SHUT IT UP.
BONES BE CRACKED, FLESH BE STEWED,
WE BE GOBLINS! YOU BE FOOD!

Verona (alchemy): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Making rolls for the other two activities being spent

The people of Sandpoint are rather receptive to Verona's herbs and cures, especially since the fall has begun. All in all with the time remaining until the Swallowtail Release she makes 66cp from folks wanting to stock up.

Sonas, keeping up with his streak of marvelous performances manages another 28cp from people leaving him tips.

Experience 1,405/2,000 | Level 1 | #001: Burnt Offerings | Part 2: Local Heroes | Day 2 (Sunday, 23 Rova 4707)

Day 1 (Starday, 22 Rova 4707)
The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the Autumnal Equinox. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travellers arrive, and several merchants tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts and souveneirs are there to meet them.

The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s amusement (except Larz’s). Sheriff Belor Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church several years ago. The next speaker is scheduled to be local nobleman Lonjiku Kaijitsu, but a sudden illness has prevented him from attending the ceremony. Sandpoint’s own showman Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes. He delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of selfpromotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda! Finally, Father Zantus steps up to give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.

Knowledge (local) DC 10 or Sandpoint Native:

Larz is a notorius workaholic around town. Lonjiku Kaijittsu is known for hating these types of festivals and frivolities and is generally a very traditional man. Sheriff Hemlock is speaking not only of the fire that claimed the previous chapel (and the previous head priest and his daughter), but also the rest of the Late Unpleasantness—an event spoken of only in hushed whispers by townsfolk. A serial killer known when at large as Chopper and later found to be local hermit and bird-watcher Jervis Stoot. Chopper clamed the lives of some 25 citizens before being caught by the previous sheriff. Unfortunately, Sheriff Avertin was also his final victim.

After the welcoming speeches are done, the crowd disperses to go and enjoy some festival fun and games! It is fairly early in the morning (about 8 am if someone were to have a clock on hand), so there is a good amount of time before the Swallowtail Release at noon.

Alrighty, time to get into the nitty gritty bits. If each of you would like to give an introduction of your character’s appearance and their morning leading into the festival, please do! If you are not a local it would make sense for you to have stayed at the Rusty Dragon Inn the night before (don’’t worry about the cost) unless you have some other interesting way you’d like to enter town.
Now, without further ado, Festival Fun and Games! There are six games that I’ve come up with (I haven’t been doing nothing for the last three weeks, promise) for you all to participate in. Between all the socializing and navigating the crowd I figure that you will each have time to participate in four games before the noon ceremonies take place. At the end of your introductory post, go ahead and pick the first activity that you’d like to participate in (multiple of you can do the same one) and give me a roll for the listed check.

Festival Fun and Games:

Archery Contest: Run by Savah Bevaniky of Savah’s Armory. It costs 1sp to play. Each participant is given 3 arrows and use of a shortbow. The target is 30 ft. away.
Roll attack for a shortbow at 30ft. Point Blank Shot and proficiency bonuses and penalties apply here.

Gemstone Panning: Maver and Pennae Kesk, town jewelers, run a gemstone panning stall with some of the shavings from the jewels they’ve cut. Maver, being as clumsy as he is, accidentally threw some full uncut gems in the trough with the shavings. His wife, through upset with her husband, lets the particpants keep whatever they find. Costs 1cp to play.
Roll an appraise or perception check.

Log Splitting: Run by Ibor Thorn of the Sandpoint Lumber Mill with accompaniment from Katrine Vinder, daughter of the owner of the town’s general store. It costs 1cp to play, and those participating are given a wood-cutting axe (great axe) and one swing at a long sturdy log.
Roll 1d12+1.5*(STR MOD). Add power attack damage if applicable (+3). You may rage for this, though you may scare the townsfolk.

Public Auditions: Cyrdak Drokkus of the Sandpoint Theater runs this event. Cyrdak is looking for people with some spirit to perform in some local talent shows. This event is free of charge.
Roll a bluff, diplomacy, intimidate or perform check here. A good description of the talent being displayed here may give you a bonus.

Tug-o-War: Run by Belven Valdemar of the Sandpoint Shipyard. He has three sailors on one end of the rope and three particpants on the other. This game costs 1cp.
Roll a CMB for this. Lowest rolls will aid the highest.

Varisivia: This game is a joint effort between Brodert Quink, a historian, and Veznutt Parooh, owner of The Way North. Costs 1cp to play. A series of three trivia questions about Sandpoint and the surrounding areas’ history and geography.
Roll three knowledge checks: geography, history and local. You may make these untrained.

Hello everyone! Thank you again for all of the wonderful submissions, they have been a delight to read through during the past few weeks.

After much deliberation and the performance of some much needed sacred geometry, I have come to my decision. Without further ado, the selected players are:

Delightful—Verona of the Wilds—Changeling—Witch—Outlander [exile]
Anthorg—Filona Fiorde—Gnome—Sorcerer—Merchant Family
SamuraiNitta—Kanontienentha—Human—Barbarian—Giant Slayer
Rocan—Sonas Adhello—Halfling—Paladin of Shelyn—Student of Faith
hustonj—Perri Perrun—Human—Paladin of Erastil—Sandpoint Faithful

If I did not select you that in no way means that I didn't think your submission was excellent, but unfortunately I only have room for five of you. If at any point a slot opens up I will be keeping the list of submissions as a well to draw on later.

Thanks again, everyone. For those of you who were selected, please go ahead and make your way over to the discussion thread!

Yessir! You'd take the dedication from this page at any level 2 or higher with a class feat and then since you're melee focused you could take the dedication here at 6 or later.

You guys will be hitting level 2 very soon (I keep the exp in my status bar very up to date), and I guess this is as good a time as any for me to mention that I am adapting this campaign to go from 1-20 instead of 1-17 since all PF2E APs will be doing so.

As an additional note, I will be making updates like this whenever new content comes out in a 2e.aonprd.com update. There will be large swaths of time that you guys can retrain during the campaign. If something new comes out that is very fitting for your character but is at an earlier level, I will let you retrain for no gp cost into that feature the next time you have downtime.

I want everyone to get to flesh out their characters as much as possible in this new system, and thus far this has been an absolute delight. :)

Findlaine stifles a chuckle at Laurel's deputy routine and focuses herself. We've got to find Bort's killer. He took a chance on us. The man didn't deserve to die like this.

Findlaine will head into the kitchen, as suggested by the sheriff, and see if there is anyone in there to ask about the events of the night.

Questions:

"Who prepared the food that Bort ate? Who brought the food out to the table? Has anyone who works here been acting strangely the past few days? Did anyone leave through the kitchen during the bar fight?

@Delightful: I have neither the time nor patience to be hawkish over encumbrance enforcement, so please just keep it within reason. If someone has a character in full-plate and 10 strength I will ask some questions, but in most cases I don't much mind.

Lucius slashes twice with his sword at the largest of the dogs, missing one but connecting on the other, slaying the beast with a solid blow. As a smaller dog attacks Hemdar, he slices to intercept and fells the beast outright.
Hemdar no longer has taken 4 damage because I keep forgetting about reactions. Sorry!

Enara attacks the dog that bit at her and lands three attacks in quick succession, felling the beast rather handily.

Hey all, someone brought up some minor character changes they wanted to do last night and it reminded me about some things I wanted to make available. Up until we hit level 2, and while you are in the process of leveling up to 2, feel free to make any changes that you feel you would like to make, especially anything related to having previously not understood the game rules. If you do make any changes, please just send me a private message so that I am aware of it. Please just don't make any such changes mid-combat, that could be problematic.

If you don't make those changes now, you can still make them after level 2, but we will use the retraining rules as described in the Core Rulebook. Thankfully this campaign involves some patches of Downtime Mode stuff, so it should be feasible outside of major segments.

@hustonj: My experience with Rise of the Runelords was largely the same for years, I feel you there.

@Delightful: Unfortunately no, I'll be sticking to my guns on this one. Considering there's no way you'd get a normal capstone, however, maybe consider the duelist prestige class from the Core Rulebook if you want a build like that.
