Vei moved to dispatch her next foe. Meanwhile, Fel saw Cardren rushing past. She drew up alongside him, and laid a hand on his side. "Be healed, my friend!" Stride ◆: Vei moves to AJ7.

Fel and Vei had been oddly distant from the group. They spent most of their time talking to each other. Apparently Fel's latest dream had been very disturbing. The pair frantically discussed its implications. When the time came, however, they would lend their support to everyone. They were both (of course) 100% in favour of rescuing the captive. When Zaranna asked for some backup, they were the first to volunteer. "Vei and I will protect you, Zaranna!"

Fel took Zaranna's anecdote very seriously. She too had a story to tell. "That message might not be from the gods at all, Zaranna! Tonight, something invaded my dreams! A hostile force tried to trick and traumatise me. Vei saved me from it in the nick of time. So please don't be lead astray. I've visited the divine realms in my sleep many times. Yet the invader's replica still managaed to deceive me. If Vei hadn't been there, who knows what might have happened."

Fel had likewise finished packing. She didn't actually look that different from before. She still wore her multicoloured dress. And even in combat, she never carried a weapon. So 'battle ready' Fel was just regular Fel, plus a backpack. She greeted her friend with a soft, melancholy smile. "I'd pictured a much happier departure. Everyone is so scared. Let's see what we can do to banish that fear. We're not scared little kids any more. We'll take on this evil, side by side."

"T-That would be wonderful! I'd love to travel with you! Vei, what do you think?" [I would find that most agreeable. Zaranna, your company is welcome.] The decision to leave had become much easier. Fel wanted to be near the people she loved. That's why she'd delayed her departure for so long. Now she could take at least one of them with her. That would be a tremendous comfort. Fel grinned from ear to ear. "Come on, let's eat! Then we go meet up with everyone!"

Fel gave a brief squeak of surprise; Then relaxed, and returned the hug. Zaranna's warmth enveloped Fel like a cloak. It made her feel safe. She looked up at her fellow Aasimar. Their shared heritage had never been more obvious. With growing courage, the Gnome accepted the task she'd been given. "O-Of course! I won't let you down." Vei was gone. But Fel had gained another guardian angel.

Fel watched in horror, as her new comrades were beaten into unconsciousness. When they'd defeated the first rat man, hope had blossomed. Now it died. Fel's group were just kids. Surprise had been their only advantage. As soon as Shadei had noisily tripped, they'd lost that. Now they were doomed. Fel's limited courage gave out. She didn't charge, like the others had. What would be the point? She'd just get captured, along with everyone else. Instead, she hid. The gnome scrambled for cover, and prayed that she'd remain unnoticed. The rats clearly wanted their captives alive. They wouldn't kill anyone. If Fel could evade capture, she might find an opportunity to free them. At least, that's what she told herself. Maybe she was just trying to justify her own cowardice. Fel hides in U26.

Vei received a better reception than usual. Perhaps the other kids were more open-minded. Or maybe they were just humouring Fel. Either way, it was a step up. She responded to each query in turn. "Vei won't tell me which god she serves. Something about it being 'part of the trial'. And Elyana, Vei says..." She paused to listen. When she next spoke, it sounded like someone taking dictation. The words clearly weren't her own. "'I am likewise pleased to make your acquaintance. Sadly, 'watching over' Fel is all I can manage. Once the link between us grows strong enough, I will be able to manifest physically. Until then, I rely greatly on kind souls like yourself.'"

Fel pointed at an empty piece of air. "This is Vei. She's an Angel. I know you probably can't see her. But I promise that she's there." The words had a weary tone. She'd given this explanation many times before. It almost never ended well. Kaiya was the only person who'd ever believed it. But Fel refused to pretend that Vei didn't exist. Angels had feelings too.
