Hi guys! Posting it on all my pbps.

Our offshore team at work is very affected by the pandemic at the moment and with the fiscal year approaching to an end, our reduced capacity is terribly affecting my time. For the next several weeks it will likely impact me in such way that I simply won't be able to keep up with the forums, things normalizing only as we start approaching mid June.

For the games where I play, GMs please feel free to bot the characters. If you don't desire to bot me for so long, I completely understand, apologize for the late notice and wish you all the best of fun. If you hold me around, though, I should be back after this storm.

For the games where I host, my sincerest apologies to the players - I won't let you hanging so if you stick around until my return we will give it continuation as normal. Otherwise, please message me and once I'm back I'll recruit replacements.

Andulian just sticks around, arms crossed behind his back, waiting for Scourge to say anything. He'd do whatever work would come, and wasn't particularly interested in feeding the small men egos by speaking with them.

Yeah, the skill focuses have to do with the archetype and the phantom (and I only have them when in Shared Consciousness) - as far as I understand, since I'm also basically learning the spiritualist :) The drowned channeller was simply too thematic to let pass.

@GM: The phantom doesn't change a thing on Andulian's climbing thing, but it was the first time he had a full minute with people distracted enough with other stuff so he could summon it, so he took the opportunity ;)

@GM: If I may suggest, please set the speeches in bold! It's just easier to focus on it, and kind of luck an "untold" best practice here in the forums; speaking in bold, thinking in italics, etc. :)

Andulian hears what is said with attention but keeps his silence; he's still trying to gauge what's going on around here. As he hears the captain's name, he tries to push his own mind to see what he knows about the man.

Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Barnabas Harrigan?

As the climbing thing kicks out, the undine gives space to the others to go first. Yet, he doesn't pay them much attention; he looks down, waiting for his time, and muttering words as if praying.

He's actually summoning his phantom to his Shared Conscience. It takes 1 minute/10 rounds, so it's likely time enough to let everybody else go first before he tries.

After about a minute, his eyes seem to briefly let out a subtle white smoke, that quickly dissipates - very hard to be noticeable, unless someone is truly trying to see exactly that.

Nevertheless, as it's finally his time, he figures he doesn't have much to lose. The other two guys up there are clearly way faster and more skilled at it than he is; so he pushes himself, knowing that the worst that could happen is likely he falling flat on his bony behind.

They definitely are a lot better than you! But don't worry, there's always demand for deck scrubbing and boot licking. - a voice says inside Andulian's head, to what he chuckles to himself.

They were violent outlaws and far from any of the romance of the movies. Mostly the pirate period in America, in the Caribbean, kicked off with the Spanish galleons that sank with gold. Still, pretty much the scum of society; nothing “Robin Hood” about them.

Andulian scratches his head, still feeling the pain from being press-ganged. He had told stories like that a hundred times, and knew exactly what was going on. His eyes circle around, checking each of the people there - those unfortunate souls, like him. While he doesn't smile, the thought crosses his mind - I hope these smelly cod heads like spooky things, as this vessel is about to be a lot scarier than they bargained for!

The undine notices the bearded guy looking at the woman. Really?, he thought, Well, to be expected, I guess.

Whose vessel 'ya said 'tis belongs to? - he finally says, standing up and trying to call the men's attention - 'Ya could have just asked, me' mates. Toss me som' coins and som' rum and I'd be scrubbing 'tis wood tah' shine.

Well, GM opinion considered - I will keep the spiritualist, then. I like his backstory and concept overall, and maybe we can all have fun with the challenge of not having certain roles in the party (arcane caster, in our case) :) while I could spin something else by tomorrow, S&S is really THE best AP to play a Drowned Channeler so... Brace yourselves! :)

On trigger warning: I'm going on my fifth decade of life with a wife and child, and don't really get annoyed or triggered, myself, with many things. With that said, I like keeping things PG-13 (we have lots of easily impressed underaged people in these forums) and especially respectful between the players. We all know how dirty the society nowadays is, and we all know how pirates were the scum of their times. However, I believe S&S was designed to play on the romanticized version of pirates (still thieves and murderers, just a lighter version of their reality).

Very fun character, Brewton! I know what you mean (Shapeshifting Hunter is fantastic), and the octopus using siege engines thing sounds great. I'll wait on what the GM thinks before building something!

I don't actually know what Brewton is! Can't find it anywhere on his profile. I understood he's a skinwalker... But that was all :)

I was thinking on some sort of brawler, but considering what you just said - we have no arcane - then I will definitely rebuild towards a bard or magus or something arcane of the sorts, if the GM allows me to :) I had also thought about a dragon disciple build I want to try, combining monk and sorcerer.

I don't know exactly what my friend Brewton is (class wise, etc.) but assuming it's some sort of full BAB martial character based on his shark bite, then any of the above would likely work.

Hey guys! Thanks for the PM! I haven't seen it was started already! Thanks for having me.

Should I really use Andulian? It feels as if it has too much overlapping all around and it could be more useful to the party if I built something else to fill different roles.

If the GM allows, I would love and prefer to reskin Andulian in something more martial. He was designed most for offhealing/hybrid stuff, focused in out-of-combat situations :) I would still keep him capable on the out-of-combat/RP stuff (because I love that, confessedly!) but would make him a little more combat inclined.

Also, to my colleagues here, if there’s any skill or spot you guys feel we’re lacking, let me know and I can incorporate it on the concept.

Anyway - thanks again for having me, and thanks for the nudge via PM (the topic was really lost down in recruitment!)

The Elephant in the Room Feat Tax elimination rules (and other variants) have lots of fans, but if Katataban's not one of them, then Katataban shouldn't allow them. Generally, I like them, because they try to fix some of the damage done to the versatility of the Fighter Class by the cruft created and added to the system to sell more books, BUT . . .. The "big, final version" of the rules document doesn't include the later cruft. So, groups have to choose how to expand the rules through the additional material, or make the adjustment for only portions of the system as it exists today.

If NOT using alternate rules turns some of the players aside, well, there's clearly not a problem with finding players willing to work within the limits the GM chose to set. Could make the selection process easier, even. Right now, Katataban has to turn away roughly 5 out of every 6 applicants.

For those who haven't recognized the patterns, one of the reasons there are so many applicants for this run of Skulls and Shackles is the 25 point attribute buy. Even 20 attribute point buy games tend to attract fewer applicants. The relatively open race selection option is a big deal for sizing the crowd, too. Some players aren't looking for a specific story to join, they are looking for a story that will let them play a <fill in the blank>. So, that increased the number of applicants. On top of all that, Skulls and Shackles seems to be one of the preferred APs, too. <shrug>

At the end of the day, Katataban needs to run the game Katataban wants to participate in. Neither mine nor anyone else's opinion about what that SHOULD look like matters, unless Katataban selects us to play in the game. Then it becomes part of an internal discussion about what the game we are part of should be.

Heartily agree, Terry, like I posted before. By the way, it looks like our characters would match well! Hoping we end up in a party together at some point.


I like the feat taxes rules rorek is talking about but honestly the game is fine without them as well, and the GM won’t have the extra work they carry (applying rules to the enemies etc.) or have to think about rebalancing (since they’re quite more useful for melee characters). Our GM is trying to keep it on that “simple, to the rules, yet fun” spot and I’m all for it. People are not required to apply if they’re not comfortable with it! We have already a good number of applicants :)

Andulian limited himself to agree with Shalluk and Zelani, at that point. He became thoughtful with the words from the doctor, but struggled to control his own rage - it would be pointless to keep making the man nervous or uncomfortable. Trying to not sound threatening, the paladin/bard finally spoke.

May we see his belongings? Who else got in contact with him while he was here? - asked, thinking about the nurses and doctors as well as patients.

The paladin sheathes his weapon and looks grim towards the now fully dead man. Andulian didn't know much about the onset of such diseases, but cursed the fact they were so late for the victim. Agreed. We need to communicate the staff of the happenings, and we should seek his primary care. I don't think they missed his disease was that advanced... To be sincere, maybe that's why the shackled him to such point.
