Alyona hides any surprise she might have over the newly introduced instructor's appearance, and executes a bow towards her. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance, m'am," she says. I have absolutely no interest in the subjects taught here. But it wouldn't due to be seen as rude, I will still need to excel here, despite my boredom. I wonder what Nisanci Thir intended with that bow? Certainly he can't still see me as one of his lieges?
"Where might I purchase after dinner wear?" Alyona replies. She appears to be nonplussed about the uniform rules, but doesn't offer any verbal complaints. I will need to eventually purchase a set of sleeves of many garments of course. I'm already missing borrowing cousin Nina's. Though with such a paltry sum as allowance I don't know how I'll ever make due. I certainly hope there will be more incoming soon.
Alyona raises her hand. "How often are ve required to vear the uniform?" she asks. She looks down at herself. It's not as if it looks horrible, in fact it's pretty cute and partially matches my eyes. I've never had to wear the same thing every day before though, how dreadfully boring and unfashionable.
Alyona descends from the carriage last. She listens with interest to mistress Hokuto as she follows the other children. The little princess is quite tired after their long journey, and their ordeal in the catacombs. She yawns dramatically, then rubs at her eyes. Alyona is content to allow any questions to wait for morning. She dreams already of a bed, after so long on the road. Despite her weariness she pays attention to Alanar's questions, not wanting to miss anything.
Alyona waits for the others to file out of the carriage first. While they do so, she contents herself to stare out the window at the statue and the foliage of the school's gardens. It's so much more beautiful than Irrisen. More beautiful than most of the places we've gone. Out there it seems like the world is falling apart. Is this place really a harbor in the storm? Could it actually be a haven of peace and plenty? To any observing her, she might appear to be a statue, frozen perfectly still. Her eyes are unfocused as she allows the ambiance of Akrabahadran draw her deep into her own thoughts.
Well, at least until September 2015. After that I'm pushing for Uruguay. It'll be hard to ever return to the States though, life is so cheap and easy here (and in other 'developing' countries). Between my wife and I, we spend significantly less than half our monthly income on rent/bills/food. It would be even less if we only ate what Chinese people eat and/or cooked at home every day. But we eat out/order food most nights and for lunch most days. We could never afford the lifestyle we have now in the States. Especially if we want to reproduce at some point. This is also not to mention that we really only work like 30 hours a week (including transportation time to and from work). That and the fact that I had thousands of dollars of debt when we moved here two and half years ago, and now we take at least one international vacation a year and have no debt. Our job isn't even that good compared to some of the stuff available here. The rewards for having the stones to pack up, and abandon family, friends and homeland are great. But it also sucks sometimes dealing with racism and xenophobia, as well as not ever getting to see family.
Alyona pretends to not be overly interesred in the new view out the window, but only lasts a few moments longer than the others before plastering her face to the window. Her breath is taken by the beauty and mystery of their new home. A smile sneaks onto her face as what's left of the little girl in her fully asserts itself. Now that alone is a sight worth leaving home for. Surely the secrets of great power lie within such a magnificent place.
Alyona bows to Taeo, smirking. "I suppose I did," she says. Then she waits patiently to be healed by Crowley. She's the last one to receive his ministrations. With the bite wound on her throat and some explanation from Hotuko on what just happened to them she's feeling much better. Alyona accepts the vigil pendant with a shallow bow, "Thank you mistress," she murmurs. "King, be a doll and hold my hair up for me vould you?" she asks Taeo, hoping he can keep the avalanche of back-length golden locks out of the way long enough for her to clasp the necklace. If he agrees to help her she attempts to strike up conversation with him as they get back into the carriage. "So now you've wisited three different planes of existence right?"
"Vha...?" Alyona begins to ask as the whole world changes around them. Her satisfied smile disappears. She stands in shock for a few moments as Erik and Alanar explain what happened. Then Alyona sets the longsword daintily down, rubbing her tired arm muscles. Swordfighting is so tiring and dreadful, why do men insist that it is admirable? "Vhere vere ve just now Mistress Hokuto? Vhat vas that castle in the sky?" She puts her delicate porcelain fingers to the still bleeding wound on her throat. That was far too close.
Alyona grins evilly as her minions swarm around the flying skull, distracting it with shouts and feeble, weak armed blows. Now is your time. Show them all what it means to be Jadwiga! She winds up with the golden longsword like a baseball player. It's a horrible posture for sword fighting, but she doesn't know that, and it will allow her to put the maximum force of her her tiny doll-like frame behind the blow. The ceremonial sword whistles as it passes narrowly over Taeo's shoulder. Alyona strikes the skull dead on, and there is a resounding crack in the small chamber as the skull spirit is swept sideways by the attack. Alyona smiles even wider to quickly cover the surprised look that began to creep onto her face when she'd realized she hit the creature. Now, she looks every inch the self-pleased princess who doesn't recognize she is but one cog in the machine.
Attack (Flanking, Aided, Nonproficient): 1d20 - 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) - 4 + 2 + 2 = 18
Crossing my fingers that that'll get the job done.
Alyona moves past Aldon, dodging around the skull to set up a flank with Erik. She swings the heavy golden blade again, this time pure rage and frustration lend her strength. Why am I here? What am I doing? Who are these incompetents? I shall have to kill Ilsea when we find her, stupid b*%%$ caused all of this with her weakness. Hmmm....how to make it look like an accident? As the longsword connects solidly with the ghostly skull (at least I hope so! Otherwise we really are screwed) Alyona screams at the top of her lungs, "F&&& OFF!" She looks around at the other children waving their weapons about foolishly with noodle-like arms. "All of you listen! Ve must cooperate. If ve aren't going to go retrieve more useful veapons, then ve must vork together. I appear to be the strongest, unsurprisingly. Help me! Harry it, distract it, and I vill cut it down." The princess cuts a bit of a comical figure in her petticoated skirt and heeled boots, but her hands are unwavering as she holds the longsword aloft. The burning imperious rage in her ice blue eyes and the iron tone of a lifetime of giving commands rings in her voice. "Do as I say or ve vill all die here!" _________________________________ Move to just north of Taeo, probably provoking an AOO.
Far as I see it, we have two options for teamwork. Everyone uses the aid another action to aid me (I have the highest to hit, and no penalty to damage), OR we make a retreat and grab some simple weapons that won't give us a -4 (20% less chance to hit) on every swing. We can only retreat if Spiral leads the way back to the last chamber. It's hard to do teamwork when everyone is posting out of initiative order, but it's doable. Next round Alyona can ready to swing until after you all aid her, then everyone except Deriku and Shenhua can step up and perform an aid action. That'll give her a respectable +8 to hit, and should make this pretty easy. Sound good?
Alyona steps up to the flying skull and swings the stolen ceremonial blade at it. The heavy weapon remains completely unwieldy in her hands, and the skull easily dodges the swing, despite being unable to see Alyona. "This is foolish in the extreme. Clearly none of us are trained to fight, and Ilsea isn't ewen here!" she huffs.
Attack (Invisible): 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 2 - 4 = 7
Alyona doesn't understand the words that Taeo and the skull are speaking, but she understands body language. She lowers her sword and steps up next to Taeo. She nods and smiles, adding the weight of her own support to his plea.
Move 10' left to just behind Aldon, above Taeo. Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
"Alanar, get into the light!" Alyona cries. She runs to the edge of the lantern light, holding the sword wobbling over her head. Her heeled boots fill the chamber with clacking, which she punctuates with another grunt as she brings the heavy blade down at the skeleton's back. This time she manages to hit it squarely between the shoulders. She hops off the ground a little, transferring the full weight of her momentum onto the blade. Not sure if that would kill it or what, so I'll leave the damage describing to you Rob
Charge to the square up and right from the skeleton, just inside the lantern light. Attack (non-proficient, charge, invisible): 1d20 + 2 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 2 + 2 - 4 = 15
AC 10 this round
"Bloodclots and miscarriages!" Alyona curses, hefting her heavy borrowed sword as best she can. Run sprints awkwardly across the chamber, her heeled boots nearly causing her to take a fall. With a cute little feminine grunt she heaves the longsword towards one of the ancient dead. The swing is unpracticed and the blade deflects off the bones, causing little to no damage. "One of you who von't be fighting, quickly, run back and get one of those blunt objects. The scepter or staff. This sword is too heavy, and it von't work well on bones." Sweat is streaming down the princess' face, and she's clearly completely terrified though she's pretending not to be. ___________________ Charge the southernmost skeleton. End in the square NE from it. Attack (charge, non-proficient): 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 2 - 4 = 11 Presumed miss, but maybe I'm lucky and they are flat footed from not acting yet Damage: 1d8 - 5 ⇒ (3) - 5 = -2 Damn it, why didn't I take the quarterstaff? I didn't even think about proficiency until just now, not to mention the DR slashing. -shakes fist at NPC class-
Alyona looks at the skeletons and their weapons, then down at her prybar. I don't really want to fight anything, but it seems these others are all weak. You are not weak. She walks up to the golden longsword and picks it up, hefting its weight. Beautiful if nothing else. "I'd rather use this sword than that bar. Someone else can take it if they please. Ve need to go find Alanar now, it vill do us no good if ve find the halfling only to lose the ifrit. Bring the lantern, lets go," the northern princess commands, taking the lead. "King, help Anelessa, she doesn't look so good." Alyona stands there, waiting for the others to fall in. If they do she will lead the way in the direction Alanar went.
Alyona steps over next to Erik, kicking at the spider hoping to distract it so he can smash it.
5' step east one square Aid Another vs AC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 20 Wow. Really tempted to change my descriptive text and turn that into a possible critical hit, but I won't. Erik, you've got a +2 to hit, use the bar. Deriku aid him as well please, and Aldon if you go before him. That'll give him a decent chance to hit.
When Taeo touches her Alyona at first she still looks still angry at him, but it relents when she sees he's only trying to be nice. "Yeah, I hope so too." She moves to maintain her position in the center of the group, keeping the lantern raised despite her aching shoulder and arm muscles. Also not lighting a torch.
Alyona thinks of a conversation she'd overheard amongst some Winter Witches once about wards they were placing on a tomb. From what she could remember, it didn't sound pleasant. "I vould say don't touch anything unless you hawe to," she comments in response to Stands on the Spiral. She continues on with the group, holding her lantern and fighting down the roiling panic in her stomach. Must be strong. Must be strong. Weakness is death. Weakness is death. Suddenly she jumps a little, startled, when the bobbing lantern throws the shoanti boy's shadow huge upon one wall. Alyona blushes, and acts like she hadn't jumped at all. She continues steadily onward, eyes down at the floor. Gods, let this be over soon. |
