Alexis's seemingly indomitable soul finally cracks beneath this latest barrage of dark power, and an alarming sum of the color drains from her form...but she is not finished yet.

She gathers up a dash of saltpeter in her palm, clenches and quickly reopens it, and now resting upon it is a small pillar of bright magenta flame. She turns to the more injured of the remaining templars.

"You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky'?"

She frowns and blinks at her own statement before continuing.

GoogleDocs treats all the images as being in a certain "line" (imagine yourself staring headlong at a train; if the track is straight, you can only see the front-car). If you right-click any given token, you'll get a long options menu, one of which allows you to change the "Order" of the tokens on the screen. The easiest thing to do would be to select your own image via the yellow corner there, go to the "Order" option, and within that, "Bring to Front".

As you can see here, this Hex is fully Society-legal, no red halo or anything; does this mean a Society character with this Hex could Craft Wondrous Items???

If so, that'd be pretty damn useful, and quite the exception (and as any Society Alchemist will tell you, it's not like ALL crafting is truly verboten).

For what it's worth, I considered healing The Shining Knight, but I don't have the healing power it would take to avoid an "I get back up, but I get knocked down again...pissin' the niiight awayyy" scenario. Sadrib, can you cover him?

DM: A couple of things:

A) For future reference, would you permit us to apply alchemical power components to spells from wands and scrolls? I have seen it ruled both ways in the past.

B) I am currently wearing the Scarab as an amulet; under the circumstances, I am hoping that means you'd be willing to consider it an object rather than creature for purposes of these damage-waves? The text does seem to at least leave this interpretation open. Of course, I could be wrong that negative energy affects Constructs to begin with, which would make the question conveniently moot (for now).

She looks directly downward and says, "You saw that, right? Repeat what you saw."

"Obviously another test...but of what?"

Alexis looks around the room.

"The obvious thing to do would be to read the Scriptures open before us...but that seems too easy. Perhaps a true Iroran ought not be content with knowledge easily offered, but look about herself and seek knowledge that takes effort! On the other hand, perhaps an Iroran is expected to prize the simple route...? Bah, I am not Iroran, but I know what I shall do!"

With that, she heads not toward the lectern, but toward the bookshelves in search of something interesting.

...where another, very different-looking Gnome appears to have already made herself at home!

"'A true student of the Eye lives seconds ahead of others'!" She declares upon seeing the rest of you. "Sometimes so much moreso that she may appear to be behind! What was that riddle I'd heard about the Young Initiate from Bright...?"

She cuts a strange figure, to be honest: Short even by Gnomish standards, yet whose thin, somewhat statuesque features and the manner in which she carries herself nonetheless makes her seem more stately. Her faintly-lilac skin and auburn hair are rather drab by Gnomish standards, but her eyes make up for it with an intense, opalescent gleam that seems to be more than just reflective.

She wears aristocratic finery that bears evidence of both Ustalavic and Osirian fashion, and into which numerous tiny trinkets, tassels, and charms of unguessable significance have been sewn, stuffed, precariously balanced, and otherwise attached, and amid her luggage can be spotted a breastplate studded in semiprecious stones and a fine black wooden shield etched with esoteric symbols in gold, silver, and pearl, which are rather unusual things to be seen alongside what she is presently poring over, namely a heavy, dark, carefully-bound book of fine and exotic materials, like that of a rather seasoned wizard.

Towering over it all is her hat: A sort of deep-purple fez that is nearly as tall as the rest of her put together, bearing the image of scarab beetle inset with a stylized eye, intricately constructed from a combination of precious metals and stones, like a modern foreigner's amateurly-informed-but-technically-skilled attempt to replicate certain Ancient Osirian symbols of power. She also wears a heavy amulet similar in appearance to the image on her hat, but more realistic than stylized.

Knowledge (History, Nobility, or Religion) DC 18:
You recognize the symbol of the eye-in-scarab as that of the secretive Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye, variously reputed to be either an "old mate's club" of conceited rich dabblers, an overly-sanctimonious philanthropic organization, a mystagoguical pyramid scheme built to profit off the naïve...or perhaps, a legitimate mystery cult with genuine secret powers to offer its initiates and a unique understanding of the Hidden Arts.

Perception DC 15:
Did that amulet just move...???

You suddenly realize she has at no point ceased talking since you laid eyes on her.

"...but OF COURSE the Rite was performed over improperly-sequenced aliquots, and the syzygy was long-past, so Uncle Oswald knew he'd have to consult Cousin Chaim before the Dark Tapestry..."

She suddenly interrupts herself before she sees a familiar face in the crowd.

"...Oh. Mr. Knight. Are we...doing well today? Have the damsels been all they seem recently?"

I read about it ages ago elsewhere on here; it simple enough, it's where we try to figure out what combination of characters to bring to a party.

'Do we have a locks-and-traps guy?' 'Anyone who Knows the Ways of Nature?' 'Do we have enough people who could fight in melee?' 'I could bring my divine mage, but does anyone else want to? I could play something else!'; that sort of thing.

Scarab Sages

I must be out of my mind, but...deal me in:

1) Player name: I'm Hiding In Your Closet
2) Character name: Alix Enki Agrippa Brunhilde Copernicus Eohippus Magnus Makoidees Dee Von Junzt
3) PFS#-Character#: 40025-22
4) Character Class & Level: True Silvered Throne 4
5) Faction: Scarab Sages
6) Regular or slow speed for chronicle: Regular
7) Perception and Initiative Bonus: Perception +6, Initiative +3 < -- "A true student of the Eye lives seconds ahead of others!"
8) Character AncestryRace?: Gnome
9) Replay?: Yes

I'll lay my motives out front: I am hoping for a certain Boon. I would prefer it for this character, but if she proves too low-level or redundant as regards "geek sudoku", I have a 6th-level Occultist whom I'd be happy to play instead.

Scarab Sages

“Leveling is not the action of one individual but a reflection-game in the hand of an abstract power.

No period, no age, and therefore not the present one, either, can halt the skepticism of leveling, for the moment it wants to halt leveling, it will once again exemplify the law. It can be halted only if the individual, in individual separateness, gains the intrepidity of religiousness.

For leveling really to take place, a phantom must first be raised, the spirit of leveling, a monstrous abstraction, an all-encompassing something that is nothing, a mirage–and this phantom is the public. Only in a passionless but reflective age can this phantom develop with the aid of the press, when the press itself becomes a phantom. There is no such thing as a public in spirited, passionate, tumultuous times.

…A sedentary reflective age devoid of passion will produce this phantom if the press is supposed to be the only thing which, though weak itself, maintains a kind of life in this somnolence. The public is the actual master of leveling, for when there is approximate leveling, something is doing the leveling, but the public is a monstrous nonentity.
The public is not a people, not a generation, not one’s age, not a congregation, not an association not some particular persons, for all these are what they are only by being concretions.

Together with the passionlessness and reflectiveness of the age, the abstraction “the press” (for a newspaper, a periodical, is not a political concretion and is an individual only in an abstract sense) gives rise to the abstraction’s phantom, “the public,” which is the real leveler.

But in proportion to the scarcity of ideas, an age exhausted by a flash of enthusiasm will relax all the more readily in indolence, and even if we were to imagine that the press would become weaker and weaker for lack of events and ideas to stir the age, leveling becomes all the more a decadent urge, a sensate stimulation that excites momentarily and only makes the evil worse, the rescue more difficult, and the probability of destruction greater.”
