About Ajoran Livara

This misshapen humanoid’s body is filled with a lumpy mishmash of vestigial hands and faces and unidentifiable organs that don’t quite break the surface of his skin, though it’s offset by a pristine angelic face.

(Background) A Child of Hubris...:
Some say that the smaller the noble house, the more they have to prove. One such example of this would be one House Livara, a merchant family from Cheliax with negligible renown and a modest foothold in the nation’s trade of magical implements. Such families often end up the pawns of their betters or the stepping stools of their lesser, so ambition and guile were their tools for survival.

Some might also say that the birth of an aasimar is a sign of the gods’ favor. Surely, an angelic scion would bring glory and respect to any family seeking to gain renown and establish any leverage possible. House Livara had more ambition than they had respect for the natural order, more desire for power than they had for fear of the Hellknights. They pushed their connections to the limit, gaining knowledge from cultists, heretics, conjurors, and even the fleshworks of Nex. Coupled with a sample of pure essence allegedly smuggled out of Nirvana itself, House Livara would forge their own scion.

But the gifts of the angels are meant to be given. Never taken.

Ajoran Livara was born to a horrified doctor and a mother who barely survived the process. A lumpy, misshapen creature, like the abominable hybrid of cherub and voidborn aberration. He was raised in the dungeons below the estate, kept in secret by a family that still wished to gain something, anything out of the investment that nearly cost them their estate. The boy was given access to every tome and bit of lore the family had access too. And he took to it quite well, despite a complete lack of talent for the practice of magic. But he saw the looks in their eyes. The way his kin looked down on him. A liability. A mistake. Surely the doom of the entire bloodline.

He was not a scion. He was a prisoner.

Ajoran does not know what lead to the day he broke free. The family had been arguing. He heard some crashing, screaming. Silence. And eventually, the smell of smoke and the glow of fire from the stairs. Had his family been purged by the Hellknights? Was House Livara attempting to burn the evidence and skip town? He only had time to break out of the dungeons and sneak away into the night, with little more than loose robes and a satchel full of whatever escoteric trinkets he could snatch on the way out.

(Background) … a Killer of Thieves.:
With a face like his, Ajoran couldn’t make a living doing regular work. And he feared what kind of familiar or legal trouble he might bring down upon himself. Naturally, he turned to crime, working mostly out of slums and sewers around Cheliax as a rumormonger. And when he couldn’t do that, he took what he could by force.

His reputation would eventually see him captured by a criminal organization of moderate repute. Traded between masters, sometimes as a trusted scholar, sometimes as a pet, until one fateful night when a particularly cruel and overly ambitious owner had been cut down by a member of the red mantis assassins. Ajoran had only heard rumors of their existence, but became fascinated with their work and even their faith. He set out to track down the assassin and learn more.

Of course, he was never in any danger of uncovering the organization. But his uncanny ability to draw knowledge from his keepsake tome did get close enough to get their attention. The assassins took him in for interrogation, but Ajoran took this as an opportunity to join them; the not-quite-aasimar certainly had reasons to hate those who mettled in divine power that they did not earn. He plead his case, explaining how he was able to conduct his search, and was eventually recruited. A combination of brute strength, sincere dedication to the cause, and an escoteric method of killing that only he fully understood earned him the favor of Blood Mistress Jakalyn.

While he never spoke of his lineage, he titled himself Ajoran, End of Thieves, in honor of his dedication to hunting those who would steal from divinity.

Fun Facts!:
Here are some things that the party would likely know about Ajoran.

-Whenever possible, he steals the lower jaw of those he kills. This began as a precaution against magic that speaks with the dead, but became a morose habit.

-Most of the esoteric trinkets that he frequently wears are constructed with or from powdered bone. See above.

-While he is loyal to the mantis god, he is sometimes known to speak fondly of Grandmother Spider. He avoids harming spiders of all kinds if he can help it, and he is unflinchingly polite to craftsmen and other service workers.

-Ajoran’s secondary sawtooth saber is old, slightly crusted with dried blood no matter how often it’s cleaned, and it never seems to leave his side. He insists, somewhat playfully, that Achaekek hands it back to him whenever it’s misplaced.

-The lastest goal of Ajoran’s training is learning how to properly pray to the mantis god while actively stalking his prey, allowing him to refocus his magic quickly enough to maintain shroud of the mantis during extended missions. He affectionately refers to it as ‘walking along the blood trail’

-Ajoran has a singer’s voice, though he prefers to speak with his fellows in sign language whenever possible.
