Pathfinder Adventure Card Guild at Gen Con!

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

We've just recently begun to recover from an amazing, whirlwind Gen Con 2015. While we're getting back to our normal routines, we have some news to share about the fantastic show this year!

Demos of Wrath of the Righteous ran at all hours of the Exhibitor Hall were a big hit. More exact numbers will have to wait for some of our records to arrive, but we know that over a thousand people played Wrath of the Righteous with the help of a dedicated and talented cadre of PFS volunteers, along with Brian, Chad, Gaby, Keith, Mike, Tanis, and Vic.

Meanwhile, Pathfinders took over the Sagamore Ballroom for the second year in a row. The Adventure Card Guild ran over a dozen tables from morning to night, ably managed by a crew of amazing purple-, orange-, and axe-wielding volunteers. Both Season of the Shackles and Season of the Righteous were available for ACG play, alongside a sneak preview of the brand-new, yet-to-be-released Paladin, Druid, and Monk class decks!

Finally, we had one more special event for Gen Con 2015: the first-ever PACG Open Tournament! For the inaugural year, we kept the event to a manageable size (and yes, we definitely heard many requests to expand it in the future!), and ran the three rounds of demonically difficult scenarios over the four days of the convention. Combining elements of Rise of the Runelords, Skull & Shackles, Wrath of the Righteous, and the Class Decks, the Open Tournament was a blast to create and run, and many battered but victorious players declared it a delight to play. Each round allowed only a few select teams to advance, ending with a head-to-head competition against an angry, insane, watery demon lord.

Tanis: Here, I got you a present!

The excellently-named team "Don't Trust Tanis" did extremely well in the first round, but ran into some bad luck in the second round, and ended the tournament in third place. The doughty members of "Don't Trust Tanis" were Eric, Rob, Rand, and Joe. They have pledged to return next year, and to continue not trusting Tanis!

Is that TWO curses in front of Kyra?

Advancing to the finals and escaping with both their (character's) lives and a second place finish, the members of "Level 5" were: Shawn, Keegan, Aaron, and Daniel.

The runners-up: "Level 5!"

Finally, our winning team: "On the Dot", composed of Aaron, Dan, Todd, and Jesse!

The Winners: "On the Dot!"

We plan to release the ACG Open for horrified reaction and general use later this year.

That's it for us at Gen Con. Thanks again to all of the people who played the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, the Adventure Card Guild, and especially to the wonderful Pathfinder Society volunteers!

Looks awesome! Can't wait to see the details of how it worked.

I was on the winning team (Aaron) and I can tell you it was a blast. You had to deal with not only the time of the blessing deck, but also a real life time constraint that got less and less as the 3 rounds progressed. Decks were made of cards from all 3 sets including some cards from Wrath that have yet to be released. You never knew what to expect when you explored.

Recognizing some people from Origins. Grats Dan.

Glad to see these pictures make it to print.

Oh man, I can feel the nerves coming back, chewing on my fingernails and desperately trying to figure out how not to die as Kyra with both cures in my graveyard, all my stats as d4s and about 20 cards in my discard pile....

all before it comes back around to my turn so I'm not wasting any of our precious time. As well as helping track a few locations mentally for optimal scrying etc. (A task I failed at, fortunately Rand was on the ball, barely squeaking us into 3rd place)

Congratulations to On the Dot for your victory!

Both of the Final teams managed to steal a prodigious amount of loot _and_ escape with it (and hats off to them), but foolishly left a very powerful enemy alive in their wake.

I almost feel like that has to come up again somehow, somewhere. :)

Aside: Anyone who played, please feel free to PM with any direct feedback you have.

As a side note, is this the right title for this post? It's giving me a sense of déjà vu.

It isn't, no. But hey, we can all keep up with it until the web folks can get in and fix things.

The PACG Open was tremendous fun to write, run, and watch. Thanks again to everyone who played! Please don't hesitate to send feedback directly to me, either.
