I'm sure most of the users here have heard about the Mayan calendar, or the Merlin prophecies or the I Ching, the Native American (Hopi for the main), the Sibyl, and even John the Baptist all pointing one way or another to the world (as we know it) ending in 2012.
The I Ching is roughly 5000 years old and predicts the worlds end via a numerical timeline that follows the path of time until December 2012.
The Mayan calendar predicted (to the exact day) Cortez's arrival.
These people are from different parts of the world, China, North America, Central America, Europe - all from different eras of time - coming to the same general conclusion.
I believe it is the Mayans that mention this more predominately than others but this is where current science agrees;
An occurance that happens every 25,800 years is the Earth the Sun and a Black Hole (which the Mayans mentioned and we've only found ourselves) algin. What effect this will have on us is uncertain.
Either it was a prophecy or an effect of the above but it has been mentioned that the North and South pole may shift. We've came to the conclusion that this has happened before. For example; Alaska used to be part of the equator.
This has been a general review. What are everyone else's thoughts?

The closer the date comes the more times the special will come on the History channels.
If it happens... it happens. I can stop it. I hope it doesn't for the sake of my family.

Hah! Yes, I re-watched the special which got me re-thinking about it.
I don't want it to happen either.
But, if it did. What would you do? Are you going to prepare for the possibility at all?

We have farm land with fresh well water, probablily hunt the land, and jar veges. We live in Oklahoma, not too worried if it floods the coasts. We have guns too. Same plan if we are over ran by zombies.

Cool Dec 21st shirt with a front and back.
I like it because it has UNIX, Mayan, RN and normal dates for the Big Day all printed on the back.

Not uncertain : no effect at all.

No, due to neither the prophecy nor the 'black hole'. The North and South poles shift due to the fluid motion of the Earths core. The effects are predictable by computer simulation.
This also has nothing to do with the position of Alaska. That's down to plate tectonics.

That the Mayans may or may not be correct, but whether they are or not has very little to do with Astrophysics or Geophysics. Also, CERN isn't going to destroy the Earth the first time the proton beams collide.

Even if CERN does produce a black hole it would be subatomic sized. The subatomic black hole would burn itself out a fraction of a second after it was created, destroying only a few stray atoms in the process.

when the time cames i will say just 's%!% happens'
the truth is that any change would not be instantaneous or just happen from one day to the other
see or weather changes... they are not only man made (yes they are very man-made)
still... i have been repeating this for 10 years... i think i am mentally prepared... and not close enough tothe sea level :D
still we can always see what secrets the goverments of the world have stored to save themselves and let the rest of us here :P

The blazar and the pole shifting I can see as being a problem, with the pole shifting being more of a problem (even though we could technically escape off planet for that one), because it'll hurt the entire time we're dying.
As for the Mayan calendar, it's a misreading. The Mayan calendar is cyclical. Dec. 2012 is when it flips over, during a time of intense conflict and great change. Maybe Earth will start over without us, who knows? I do find it interesting that it lines up with the end of Obama's first term as President, but then again, it's not all about America, now is it?

Sam Neil is one of my favorite actors; I love that scene.

i agree :D
returning to topic
the Mayas said that there had been about 5 humanities... we are the 5th
and that humanity goes in cycles
when the godsget tired of their creation they clean their messand begin again
and yes the Mayan said that it was the end of an age
the next was so terrible (or at least the change) that they dared not look further
well in4 years we will see :)
if its the end of the world
i just want to have firstline seats

Damn skippy. He is one creepy dude. His turn as Damien Thorn in The Final Conflict was awesome, but Event Horizon was definitely one of his best. Scared the crap out of me.
