And a rant.Ozrethhttps://paizo.com/threads/rzs43y42?How-would-you-tie-these-PCs-into-Age-of-Worms2024-02-26T15:24:14Z2024-02-26T15:24:14Z
I've just begun running age of worms, they are nearing the end of the first dungeon in Whispering Cairn, four sessions in. There isn't much buy-in presented in this adventure, but my PCs have some hooks that I'd like to tie into this AP.

1. Two dwarves from Greysmere, one looking for an alchemical substance to help thwart a disease that is growing on the fungus farms kept underneath Greysmere. Another who is looking for a lost artifact of St. Cuthbert.

2. A wild elf whose warrior lover disappeared overnight.

3. A monk from the Twilight Monastery living in Diamond Lake to protect the trade envoy who trades Kalamanthis between the Moanstery and Diamond Lake, and works as a barkeep to gather intel on the town ever since the violent conlfict between DL and TM years ago.

I'm thinking potentially the hills that the Monastery harvests Kalamanthis from and the fungus farms at Greysmere are potentially becoming infested with Kyuss worms, and the PCs learn of this after returning from the Cairn back to Diamond Lake.

Maybe the lost lover replaces Alastor Land? Perhaps being last of the bloodline was drawn to the Cairn, unsure why when he died he remained in limbo (is this even explained for Alastor?), but needs his remains buried and wants them buried in the Bronzewoood Lodge cemetary. Upon arriving, they find that other elves/druids etc remains are missing. The wild elf PC had previously shunned the inhabitants of the lodge and their studies/worshipping as pointless, but now may feel some attachment.

Now, a rant:

I regret not having read through the whole adventure before running it, and definitely should have waded through the many threads on the AP. The entire first adventure seems very disconnected and pointless to me, and more like a way to impose a bunch of irrelevant GH lore onto the party. It seems to take until the end of the second adventure before the party even have a real reason to be invested in anything at all, and even then, why should they care about a worm and some prophecies?

I've read through the overload and see some promise in the overall adventure, I can see how it plays through to the end epicly, but it feels like it will be a chore to get there. But I'm sort of taking that as a challenge. It seems almost universally praised (though all of the praise comes with caveats about all of the issues), and I want to see if my group gets enjoyment out of it the way others have. Things often play out differently than they read.
I've just begun running age of worms, they are nearing the end of the first dungeon in Whispering Cairn, four sessions in.
The Guests line up and begin presenting gifts, My Cleric of Obad-hai insists upon being the last. He saunters down the red carpet and presents a walking stick made out of a black dragon spine from the traitors graves and says something to the effect of " You are an Oaf and Tyrant"(I don't recall the exact words as your poor DM was at a loss) and breaks the stick throwing it at the Princes feet.

We are just finishing up The Whispering Cairn and I tend to add a lot of items to the campaign as we move along seeing what they are in to and what isn’t working. I gotta say finding the piece to the rid of seven parts has lit a fire under them and also opens a means to possibly bring all that lore etc I. To this campaign as well. Do here is the idea and looking to see if anyone has tried anything similar to see what worked and what did not.

This is high level as nothing fleshed out yet. Ok I am thinking of tying in the rod of law to be used as a means to defeat Kyuss in the end. They have already secured one piece in the Whispering Cairn. So now to spread the rest of the pieces at focal points within the campaign arc. If I need to add a side quest here or there do it.

In turn, I also plan to change the story arc slightly. With this, bringing in the Age of Worms and raising Kyuss to god status is being driven by the Queen of Chaos who is trying desperately to bring Miska out of pandemonium to finish what she started. She has figured out that the key to Miska’s return is Kyuss as he is the one who holds the key to her release. Stop the Age of Worms, stop the return of Miska and defeating Kyuss will require the rod of law to defeat him. Hence a race to those parts in the campaign by both sides.

This is the basic idea. If anyone has done anything similar, let me know. This lore created in WC is just having my players intrigued and I think a good enhancement ti the campaign. I know this is an old campaign so doubtful I will see much but who knows. Thanks.
Ok , so I have an older group of long time players who are inquisitive and great players. Largely AoW can live without Blackwall Keep and Hall of Reflections with a little nudge.

First, borrowing from forums, heavier foreshadowing with use of Faceless One letters so the party knows by the end of the Ebon Triad encounter that they've routed a cult that seeks the creation of an Overgod if they can make the Age of Worms come to pass (and they're apparently close).

Next, to skip Blackwall Keep and incorporate RHoD, had Allustan contact Marzena from the swamp during "down time" to share notes. She enters town with a representative of the lizard folk. The lizard folk were betrayed by a black dragon named Ilthane that sought to make them stronger by combining eggs but instead unleashed worms into their clutch. They lost over half their tribe, and a captive taken by the garrison was infected and killed most of the soldiers there before being hacked to pieces.

The swamp is too infested to continue to be a home for the lizard folk, and the source of the worms has yet to be ascertained. Allustan proposes the following: the party goes to Elsir Vale where Eligos (I changed it to Seriteren the Wise but kept the Eligos description) now lives. Eligos is a font of arcane knowledge but was banned from the City for liberating some tomes from the royal library. [Given that my party killed Filge, Allustan will mention Eligos may be the only person still alive who would know more about these worms].

As another hook, I have Allustan's estranged daughter as Captain Soranna, who should be able to help them find Eligos. Allustan also proposes they try to negotiate compromise for the lizard folk to relocate to the swamps of Elsir Vale.

From there, it is a simple matter to run RHoD. If Eligos dies, there is Immerstal the Red in Bristol that he may have given his notes to. Once Elsir Vale is safe, Eligos can divulge what he knows.

To hook Loris Raknian, Eligos may hint (if the party doesn't think of it) to look for anyone trying to obtain one of the scrolls/books he mentions. Given the notes they have, there is a rich patron in the City who was funding the cult. Some basic hunting turns up Loris Raknian and the hook develops to enter the party into the games to get some concrete evidence and find out what else the Ebon Triad is up to. Buff that adventure up a level (given the party should be 10th level after RHod) and we're back on track.
I've merged the two as I've been wanting to run my group through RHoD and AoW but didn't want two campaigns just to give them a whirl. I thought we could start a thread to relate the heroic, or not-so-heroic, tales of the adventurers who have met their fate in the Age of Worms Adventure Path.

Deceased: Cys, 5th level Aasimar sorceror

Adventure: The Three Faces of Evil

This story is kinda long, but you need to know a little history to see why things turned out the way they did in the end.

In our last session, the party sorceror nearly died after losing eight points of Constitution from the dire weasel attack, coupled with a 5d6 fireball from the Kenku boss. He felt relieved that he survived such a harrowing encounter, and had a new-found sense of purpose.

Last week was also the last session for our party cleric, so I invited a co-worker to join, encouraging him be a cleric or druid, to take the place of the cleric. He chose to be a half-orc druid, who would be introduced, bound and out of spells, as a potential sacrifice in the Inner Sactum of the Temple of Vecna.

During the commotion of the fight, having a huge centipede in the room and all, the druid wild shaped to a dire weasel, in order so slip out of his bonds. The party sorceror saw the dire weasel, freaked, and cast web over the entire west side of the room, catching the centipede, the druid, the one remaining alcolyte, but also separating the party from The Faceless One, who was still in the Acolyte's Chamber, casting spells from a distance.

The Faceless One doubled back through his laboratory, and cast fireball (I changed his prepared spell as listed) down the hall, catching most of the party. Last session I rolled a 12 on 5d6, which saved the life of the sorceror, but this time I rolled 29 (including four 6's) on 6d6. The sorceror failed his save and dropped to -17 or something.

In hindsight, the web spell hurt the party tactically, but was perfectly in character.
We had our first PC death in tonight's session, and I've read of the demise of many others.
