Save the Date – Pathfinder Playtest Stream Aug 31!

Friday, August 25, 2023

Hello Pathfinders! As we announced during our Gen Con Keynote Presentation, we have a playtest of two new classes starting September 1! These classes are entirely new – not concepts brought forward from First Edition into Second Edition—and we can’t wait to share them with you!

To kickstart the playtest, we’re having a Paizo Special Livestream on Thursday, August 31 at 4 p.m. pacific daylight time (PDT). Join Design Manager Michael Sayre and Senior Designer James Case as they give an overview of the new classes and introduce the Iconics that represent them.

I for one welcome our new iconics, especially the muscular shirtless one.

First one looks HAWT but also war-like. Maybe this is the Warlord or Battle Commander type class?

Second one looks like they are carrying a lot of stuff..thats all I can glean! Can't wait to see the full art on the 31st!

Arm jincos and nipples confirmed.

My 2 cents.

First picture: we have a bulky man with no need to wear armor and cool tattoos. I don't know why, but it makes me think of mythological heroes like Hercules or Samson. Bearing in mind that the name must be three syllables, with three vowels, and the "divine" theme of forthcoming publications, I pick this as the Rare class and say Demigod/Herogod. Iconic coming from Iblydos?

Second picture: I think about a caster. The sleeve of the dress looks like it was sewn with raw material. On the front is an ornament which I believe may be made of bone or wood. All this leads me to think of a "tribal" caster (forgive the term if it may seem inappropriate). About the named, I would try with Totemist or something related to the spirits of nature and their manifestation.

My favorite part of this blog is the hype but my second favorite part is that I got to zoom really close into things.

I really hope that right one talks to spirits.

Demigod and Animist are my personal called shots here, we'll see if they hold up!

The art style... I can't help but feel like that's a clue. Like, "Greek" would not describe.

Well, this reveal certainly didn't make that pairing less likely.

Probably wishful thinking but the shirtless iconic makes me think a shifter like class. Scars, tattoos, bones or teeth adorning them, few clothes... Someone who probably doesn't spend a lot of time in big cities.

Okay, freaking fascinating right there. I could see that so easily.

Did the iconic on the right have a 6th finger? Or maybe what I'm taking to be a pinky finger is a part of their attire. Which would make the missing finger a ring finger.

Anyway, I like Animist as a good possibility for the iconic on the right.

Other options for the character on the left could be (along with the already mentioned Demigod) Aspirant or Ascendant. Kill a god, birth a god. It has a nice symmetry to it.

Sorry, "Nipple Lord". Forgot the naming convention.

Left one: Reminds me of Thor's portrayal in God of War Ragnarok, plus a bunch more tattoos. Or Maui a la Moana. Sooo... +1 Demigod?

Right one: Has a lot going on but looks cloth-caster in style. Can't say too much on this one otherwise, so I'm down for whatever. Could be carrying a set of musical pipes, or maybe a wooden shield.

The one on the right looks like it has bulbs of garlic hanging on the side. The artwork on the wooden-armor(?) looks similar to art used in some pieces for Sarkoris.

Does anyone know whether the playtest classes will be available in PFS? How would that work, it they’re allowed?

They'll be available during the playtest window following the standard organized play playtest rules, which are down at the bottom of this page.

Awesome, thanks for the answer!

Say one thing about the promise to reveal the new classes before September 1st: You didn't lie.

I'm glad the union exists, or presumably this would have been scheduled for 11:45 pm.

"Overdressed" fits the three vowel, three syllable, and the usual Wayne Reynolds art style on display, so I think we have one of our class names on the right side.

"Overdressed" has four vowels.

Not if you ignore the "o."

Overdress

can't be demigod that would imply mythic which would require its own playtest I hope to god I'm wrong & IT IS demigod because that means mythic is coming in the next few years!!

I am skeptical of demigod but definitely think one will be Animist. If it isn't that, it will likely be something synonymous, maybe with a more specific cultural bent. People were discussing Polynesian words in the other thread which sounded promising. But I wouldn't think they'd want to go overly specific to any one culture for a whole class.

The second one is an explorer, a cartographer or something like that.

Hmmm, looking very closely and carefully at these two pictures, I think I have a solid, educated answer to both!

The first on the left is clearly going to be a Strength-based spellcaster called a Swolomancer, that casts all of their spells with unarmed strikes and Athletics maneuvers like "Pacifist Fist" and "Falcon Punch"

The second is a Ysoki-only class called a "Trove Rodent" that gets more powerful the more Bulk they carry. (Early designs had called it "Packrat", but that was deemed to be a coarse slur)

Jokes aside, I'm very interested to see what these are, and happy that we'll learn more on Thursday before the playtest! I REALLY like the idea of an Animist as one of these, and as much as I jibed with the Swolomancer, I think it would actually be REALLY cool to see a super-buff 2E spellcaster iconic for a change to shake up the silhouettes some xD

I'm skeptical about Demigod as a class, though, especially because Demigods weren't just big beefsters like Hercules, but some were also cunning tricksters or powerful magicians. How could that all be captured in one class?? I think, if that wasn't a Versatile Heritage, it would fit better as a first-level Archetype like the Wellspring Mage that could be applied to any class and has enough that's appealing to both martials and casters and maybe a smattering of things specific to either role.

Looking forward to finding out what they are in less than a week! =D

OOOH, you know, that fits with the "Year of Exploration" vibe from Society, so maybe we'll see more of that for the game as a whole!

Eeeenteresting!

"Mapmaker" would fit the three syllables three vowels rule.

Wow. Literally none of this, from the snippet-pics nor the posited guesses has me hyped in the least. I really hope *something* that I find interesting is revealed.

You know you could say something nice. And remember the iconics are just one way of representing the class…

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Throwing out my likely wrong guesses.

Animist, although I think that could apply to either character: an animist from a more tribal background could very well look like the muscle dude in this image. Also an animist would fit in well with the upcoming Tian Xia sourcebook.

Archivist for the one with a million scrolls. If its a character whose entire thing is "delving into knowledge that man was not meant to know", than that might be enough to make it rare.

Man both these classes look amazing and I am fully hyped! Really hoping one is the demigod, though I think it's a long shot even with the picture.

Oh, maybe we have a really deep cut here. Instead of demigod, the née class is Therapon, a term meaning ritual substitute or scapegoat. Used in understanding the social functions of heroes in IE mythic systems. Could be a class that centres on take damage, like the monk from Pillars of Eternity.

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

I remember back in d&d 3.5 there was a horror adventures rulebook and in it there was an archivist class that was an intelligence divine caster. I can't remember the book or the class name. But I'm reminded of that.

Edit: Found it, Heroes Of Horror, WOTC Print October 2005, Archivist class Pg.82.

The swollen one has gotta be spell-wrestler, runecrafter, pugilist or something like that that works with their hands, brawn, and/or creativity moreso than something more academic or charming. But, just because the iconic appears brawny doesn't mean that Strength has to be the most important or even only choice for a key attribute. Demigod could also work, but then so could Avatar. Both are connected/related to gods, but in different ways.

I like the idea of the explorer as a class. But, I'm not sold on that idea. Traveler and wanderer could also work just as easily and I'm not sold on that, either. I'm thinking it is more likely to be something more related to faith, religion, spirits, or philosophy like an Animist, Heretic, pilgrim, Onmyoji, Shugenja, or Apostate.

The first makes me think of the Māori and those that would perform a haka. The second makes me think of an Animist of Native American cultures, especially those of north and western North America due to the heavier clothing. We know Paizo takes inspiration from real world cultures while leveraging creators (writers, artists, etc.) from those cultures to give genuine support to their development.

It's always great to see something you can relate to in the media you watch or read, games you play.

Arcadia. Hero-twins. Demigods?

Camazotz beheads somebody divine?

My favorite detail from the pictures is the right one throwing the “Westside” hand sign.

Beefy boy really looks like he could be the Bloodrager iconic, and that REALLY excites me! Loved the 1e Bloodrager.

The wrinkle in that idea is, of course, the whole 3 syllables, 3 vowels thing. Bloodrager has 4 vowels. HOWEVER, the devs have been cheeky with certain things before, such as when they said shields wouldn't get sturdy runes in the remaster, only to reveal that they absolutely got runes that improve their durability, but they were called something else.

Bloodrager has 4 vowels, but only 3 unique vowels and only three vowel sounds. I feel like that could still work.

Or I could just be really, really blinded by my desire to see the return of the Bloodrager. That's probably more likely.

If its a old class it could be shaman, shiftier, inquisitor, skald, occultist, mesmerist, medium, spiritualist, cavelier, braweler, arcanist or brawler, I expect shaman and shifter.

The second pic looks like someone from Arcadia. Maybe wearing their cotton armour?

Cultural background influenced perhaps by real life pre-contact Zapotec civilization?

We know that Camazotz is going to be be featured relatively soon…

Totally fair, I absolutely missed this.

Still, it's hard to deny that ABSOLUTELY looks like Crowe, the Bloodrager iconic.
