Hello, Pathfinders! We’ve got some exciting news to share.

Mirrorscape Augmented Reality Dungeon Mockup

Paizo is announcing a partnership with Mirrorscape, an all-new XR tabletop gaming platform, to make Pathfinder and Starfinder available in authentic 3D and augmented reality.

Mirrorscape, which is set to launch on iOS and Android on July 25th, has generated excitement among tabletop roleplaying gamers as an exciting experience that lets players interact with game pieces, terrains and minis in authentic 3D, whether they are around the table or around the world. Coverage from Wired, Wargamer, GamesRadarand Dicebreaker has been overwhelmingly positive, so buzz is growing! With Mirrorscape, players will be able to connect and play the legendary quests and adventures in the Pathfinder and Starfinder universes they know and love from the tabletop anytime, anywhere on their mobile devices.

Mirrorscape has already partnered with names like Dwarven Forge, Fat Dragon Games, Hero Forge, Reaper Minis, and Norse Foundry to create digital twins of the terrain, minis, and dice players love to make your adventure awesome. Your world-building will be easy and intuitive with terrain that stacks and snaps in place, or you can drop down pre-built maps for ready-made adventures. A Free Starter Set includes enough pieces to build caverns and dungeons and up to 10 free minis.

Mirrorscape is 100% aligned with Paizo’s vision for open and inclusive gaming and the Open RPG Creative (ORC) License. The Mirrorscape platform is designed to support a wide variety of rulesets and homebrew campaigns. As partners, Mirrorscape and Paizo will empower user-generated content and support, not restrict, player creativity.

Using the magic of AR on the iOS or Android device in your pocket, you can enjoy digital play on your actual tabletop with digital dice that bounce just like the real thing. In the near future, Mirrorscape is also planning to release its platform on AR glasses and headsets, meaning it won’t be long until players can experience the magic of a fully immersive AR tabletop where players can move their minis and build vast worlds for exploration with their hands, thanks to hand tracking and gesture control.

Get ready to download Mirrorscape on Apple App Store or Google Play on July 25th, and be ready for your next Pathfinder or Starfinder adventure in amazingly authentic 3D!

This looks amazingly cool, I love the whole concept of AR. I'm an early VR adopter even.

But I really can't tell who this is for.

If I'm in person, I'm going to be be playing with maps and minis and stuff already, and trying to move a tablet around to show everyone where their stuff is seems overly complicated. And if I'm determined to be digital, then we have a few VTTs we could just use?

Backed this during crowd funding, the technology is amazing. They plan on bringing a desktop app and allow for VTT on desktops. That will make this infinitely more useable for the masses.

Can't wait!

This looks really cool! I'm excited. Love the idea of the party opening an app on their phones or tablets and seeing an awesome 3D map on the table.

wait, are these dices, maps and virtual miniatures for me to use in a face-to-face game?

instantly with hero forge support? nice

This looks exactly like how my Starfinder character would play Pathfinder in Starfinder.

Now to hack the (NPC) GM's notes to see what we are up against.

Eh, I'll stick with Foundry.

So would this help those who runi PbP games if everyone had this app?

Having read the WiRED article, and the….blog….again, it seems like that’s a yes.

Hero Forge has amazing customisation, would be awesome to see that here too. I do wonder just how the pricepoints will work for the various components. It is one thing to allow lots of homebrewing and customisation but quite another to only allow such after payments and/or subscriptions.

I'd say it's for the people who want to be able to get together and play without feeling as if they need to bring all of their books and minis, or have to bring their laptop to load up a VTT. There are still a lot of VTT's that don't play nicely with various tablets, and mobile phones are just kind of a laughable pipe dream for damn near all of them. So being able to have something to replicate that at the table feel while in person with limited space would be nice to have.

How will character sheet interaction work? Will this be like Foundry? Or will we be able to use our Hero Lab characters with our Hero Forge minis and roll Norse Foundry virtual dice? I'd be all in if that's the case.

Otherwise, I'm not sure. I'm willing to give it a test drive though.

My main concern is the there are so many other virtual sources and table tops out there already. How will this one beat, or incorporate, what we're already invested in?

Alternatively, for someone like me, who has no Foundry, and plays a lot of PbP and posts 98% from a tablet, Mirrorscape doesn’t need to beat anything else, just be a place where other things are easily incorporated to make a current play experience all the better.

Very nice. I backed their Kickstarter and look forward to using it in my games. I plan on using it just for the maps and miniatures, and everything else we will use as we do now, with pencils and paper. Even though I have a huge war/gaming table I imagine this would be even better for those with limited table space.

Also, you don't need to pass a tablet around the table, each player can use their phone to view the maps and miniatures.

Phones at a games table? That's a recipe for disaster.

I’m not sure I agree. Most adults I know and all teenagers are now mostly cybernetic entities. With the availability of rules and other add-ons online, I’m not sure why having each player have near limitless access to such resources would be a “disaster” at all.

Now if you are talking about the perils of a generation of mostly addicted tech-addicts unable to set their devices aside to concentrate on an RPG while also raising the next generation without having the requisite understanding of the tech nor the training to do so to be almost as bad, if not worse - well, that’s another story. But it crosses almost every human activity at this stage.

Will it be available globally? Getting some not available in your region message - however maybe it is an issue of release date.

Just dl’ed it, had to get a new code sent to verify my email at least five times. Finally got in. The tutorial helps for about 5 actions and then stops, leaving you high and dry. The swiping is terrible with two or three fingers, no idea how to start a new map, get building or place minis. At this stage is dead on arrival to me. Will give it a go on a computer if that is even possible. Is it available on Mac or PC?

It’s a real shame because I was actually really looking forward to making some maps and hosting some games.

It doesn't seem to be available for Windows currently.
