Jim Butler Named Paizo President

Monday, May 16, 2022

Jeff Alvarez has stepped down as president due to health reasons. Paizo has named Vice President of Marketing and Licensing, Jim Butler, as its new president.

“I have had the pleasure of working closely with Jim from his days at TSR through his time working on Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition at Wizards of the Coast, and now working with me at Paizo,” Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens said. Jim is a hardworking visionary whose almost three decades of game experience makes him the perfect person to guide Paizo into its third decade.”

“I’m grateful for the trust that Lisa and the Leadership Team have placed in me to lead Paizo,” Jim Butler said. “I look forward to working with my fellow employees to lead the company into the next era of tabletop excellence.”

Jim brings decades of gaming experience to his new role, including serving as Paizo’s vice president of marketing and licensing over the last five years. Before Paizo, he has worked at TSR, Wizards of the Coast, Warner Bros./Turbine, and Trion Worlds.

“I started my gaming career as an editor and game designer, switching over to marketing and brand management when Peter Adkison wanted ‘gamers with business degrees’ running Dungeons & Dragons,” Jim said. “It’s been an epic adventure so far, and I’m excited that a new chapter has begun.”

Jim lives in Redmond, WA with his husband, Matthew, and their fur-kids: Toker, Stella, and Skylar. He’s currently playing through volume 5 of the Pathfinder Return of the Runelords Adventure Path as a kobold druid and GMing the Extinction Curse Adventure Path for Pathfinder Second Edition.

Is Alvarez still with the company? Several #PaizoAccountability concerns landed pretty squarely at his feet.

Jeff Alvarez will move into a consultant role with Paizo and continue to handle a few assignments.

I would respectfully suggest that it'd be rather trashy to derail a thread that should be congratulating Jim on his promotion with... other stuff.

So, congrats Jim!

Congratulations Jim, I hope the role suits you well and you'll be able to help shape and lead the company as it undergoes its own transformation in the years to come.

Best of luck to Jeff with regard to the health concerns, I hope the change can help with the healing and/or treatment.

It's about celebrating a good thing for Jim. For once can we as a community just be happy.

I'm plenty happy, and post in other threads here every single day. You're welcome to check my profile to prove it.

Jeff doxxed a member of this community (the "we" you're talking about here), was accused of queerphobic comments, and oversaw the implementation of a transphobic room policy. Many called for his removal, and instead we got several meaningless PR statements, followed by months of silence, and now find that even with him removed from a position of power, he's still with the company. It's not out of line to raise these concerns in a post literally about his position in the company, and to backseat moderate or complain about me raising them is absurd.

Again; you can post your comments, I can post mine.

I'd like to both congratulate Mr. Butler, and remind people not to feed the off-topic trolls, just flag their posts and move on.

Congrats Jim!

I am enthusiastic about this direction, and can't wait to see where you lead the team.

Keiftu is no troll, and trying to project that on them is not cool. They asked a very valid question, and got an answer. Saying it is derailing the thread is what is going to wind up derailing the thread. Could have just not commented, and now there is a back and forth.

If Jeff has health issues I wish him the best, and a speedy recovery. At the same time I had no faith in his leadership and am happy to see Jim take the reins, cautiously optimistic. As someone who was seriously contemplating reducing or canceling my subscription now that Book of the Dead delivered I can say this move will make me feel a bit better about maintaining subs while the work is being done.

Congratulations to Jim for the promotion!

On the other topic, if a company was sad to see someone leave after years in a leading position, they would get their own article with thanks for their service, not a mention as an aside in someone else's promotion notice. Health issues aside (and noone deserves those, so best wishes for a speedy recovery!), this is either a major communications mishap on the side of Paizo, or a very deliberate choice. Your guess is as good as mine...

If I recall correctly they are the official German language translators for Pathfinder. I think he mentioned in a post awhile back they sent him the custom plush as a gift.

Edit: I was correct

Jim handled the Kingmaker fiasco communication really well, so I'm stoked to see him getting a promotion. All the best to Jeff, hope you get well soon.

I did know the first part (I'm the admin for THE german pathfinder fanbloig) didn't know the second part (shame on me).

As a Ulisses Pathfinder person, who moved from the Pathfinder 2e translation team to the Ulisses Marketing team, I would like to congratulate Jim both on the new job and on the excellent choice of decoration for this picture.

While we currently have the Absalom & Edgewatch crowdfunding on GoT, we're looking forward to continue to bring all the future Lost Omens boooks as well and seeing the Pathfinder community grow on both sides of the Atlantic.

OR...

Keftiu could have courteously started a new thread instead of threadcrapping here.

and Congrats to Jim. Always good to see folks from the TSR days.

Response is to Sunderstone. Forgot that I try not to quote when possible.

There is a lot of or's.

Personally I think keeping accountability visible is where it is at and appreciate that they asked the question as respectfully as one could hope. Got an answer that was less than ideal and vocalized that as well.

As for your back and forth. I could go into the long list as to why it is essential for visibility if accountability is to take place, and why the person in question has until this date never publicly been held accountable and even in this they are still stepping down in what seems to be a voluntary action publicly regardless of what took place behind closed doors.

So, no thanks. I appreciate what Keftiu did here, and had they not beaten me to it I would have done the same. I appreciate that they did it with far more class and tact than I am typically capable of.

Editted to Add:
It also appears that those who claim to have a desire to keep a thread on topic can't help themselves but derail it at every chance instead of, you know, not doing that.

Second Seekers (Roheas)

Still dont know anything about Jim.

Weird that he was brought in pretty quietly after the Edgewatch debacle and is President a year later.

Hope this doesn't derail the unions negotiations too much.

Okay, not having Jeff as president is a start. I'll bring back my Starfinder AP subscription and continue to test exactly how thin that ice is.

Congratulations and good luck to Jim!
