okay, so are you all charging the ship full speed ahead? And when do you fire the cannons? If it helps, they have three range increments, 150 feet and 300 feet and 450. It goes off of dex+int+bab. You subtract 4 from the roll for every range increment. Cannons do 30Blunt+3d10 fire dmg to anything they hit and they go against touch AC and they do 1/4 of the damage to anything they don't hit within a 10 foot radius or on anything that is a near miss, as long as a 1 isn't rolled dmg is done to something.

"Once we're within 120 feet, I can cast fog cloud on them, to prevent them targeting us. Other than that, unless someone wants to be able to swim to their ship or become enlarged, there's not much I can do until we are engaged in combat."
Allie "Cat" Calico |
"The fog may be useful, if they prove too accurate with their guns. If we manage to close, we need something that will kill or incapacitate as many of the opposing crew as possible. Barring that, enlarging someone, Ondan for instance, might make fighting difficult for the hobgoblins."
Annie Hightower |
Can I fire more than one gun? I'm assuming I have a better attack modifier than most of the crew does. Also assuming Lillian gives me guidance.
Annie aims in the cannon, waiting for the swell of the ship to line the weapon up with the opposing ship. She waits for the perfect moment and fires!
Cannon: 1d20 + 12 + 1 - 8 ⇒ (1) + 12 + 1 - 8 = 6
I'm not entirely clear on the range penalty for cannons. Do you start taking penalties at the first increment, or the second? If you start at the first, take an additional 4 from that roll.
DoubleGold |
okay, so as Annie instigates a firing, the other ship fires back hit: 5 + 1d20 ⇒ 5 + (17) = 22
hit: 7 + 1d20 ⇒ 7 + (19) = 26
they are aiming for your ship, which is 15 to hit and so is their ship.
Your ship takes dmg: 60 + 6d10 ⇒ 60 + (6, 5, 2, 9, 5, 8) = 95 your ship has 300 HP
You all have 6 cannons on the ship and there are 13 others on that ship, 11 on deck, 2 on the lower cannons, and watch out, they have more cannons on the deck they have note fired yep, as they only fired from the lower cannons.
PCs now have a turn You can try diplomacy or whatever.

sorry, I was trying to finish up the last of Gallery of Evil, which seemed to drag and is finally over. I will try to put up a new recruitment thread to continue this.
okay so as the fight goes on, your crew suggest surrender and you all do. But they don't take anything from you. Instead they want to discuss fighting of a new sea monster. now that this is the only Game I'm Dming, I don't fell overloaded and I won't update and forget about it.

okay, so after about a few days worth of travel. Up in the distance you see something. Then before you know it, the lockness monster appears and with it on its back is a bunch of zombies and ghost pirates.
Your ship is not moving, so I need someone with a survival/profession sailor check to steer the ship and move it away from the monster every turn, or ram it if you dare which is a higher DC without the ship taking dmg. You are free to use cannons, but you would get a -8 attack to use the cannons because the monster is moving fast. everyone is 80 feet from you
Heroes are up
One lockness monster, 18 zombies, 9 ghost pirates and 1 queen zombie. you have enough knowledge dc to know these zombies have 35 HP and 15 ac and 10/slashing. and the ghost have dr 10/magic with the same stats. Queen zombie has 17 ac and 70 HP.
Many people are joining you for this combat

Seville Demair |
"Ram it, indeed! I've half a mind to get over to that monster and give those corpses a piece of my mind," comes a shout from behind the group as murky skinned undine steps out of the crowd of sailors. Garbed in an oiled leather jacket, a loose white tunic that hangs open nearly to his navel, and a pair of black breeches, he looks the part of a brigand. Rather than any hat or bandanna, though, his long dark hair is woven through all manner of seashells, feathers, and beads. He moves with a lithe grace that suits one accustomed to a lifetime spent aboard ships and his bearing speaks of skill honed through experience. Baring more than a few gold-capped teeth in a wicked grin, he steps up closer and settles his palm against the pommel of his ornate cutlass. "And a piece of my steel, of course. Corsair Seville Demair, at your service."

Firdall Firetail |
Firdall Firetail, Another of the recently rescued pirates steps up to one of the cannons and begins to ready and aim it. "Ram if ye like. But we should at least pepper them on the way in." The pirate is a weathered, black furred, catfolk, dressed in a well kept breastplate worn over a worn silk shirt woven leather leggings and bare feet. Firdall is missing a piece of his left ear.
Happy Jim |
"I'm better with a sword, meself, Cap'n. So if'n you don't mind, I'll stick close to ye until the blades start singing," says a tall, strong man with a widow's peak, a goatee and a beaming smile.
He pulls out a spyglass and offers it to the Captain.
"Fancy a peek?"

"It's a distinct pleasure, love," he says with a swift wink before looking across to Allie. "Perhaps a ramming maneuver to the beast's neck? That would set us up for a spectacular broadside, though we would be within reach of its maw." With that, he steps toward the nearest cannon and prepares himself for ramming.
Allie "Cat" Calico |
Allie takes the offered spyglass from the handsome young man and peers through it, scanning the oncoming foe.
"Undead ride with the beast. Say your prayers to Besmara or whoever keeps the wind in your sails. This could get messy!"
"Charge the guns! Full ahead, ramming speed! Prepare to repel boarders!"

Will make an alias asap.
Ram it my rat-like friend! A persuasive strong voice says. Stepping out from the gathered sailors is a man with boyish good looks. Dressed in a flamboyant outfit covered by a gleaming chain shirt. Holding a bow in one hand he attracts the attention from all onlookers.
I bless you all in the name of the pirate queen. Let’s put an end to these abominations.
Grundum the Mighty |
This is wondering monsters character. I am finishing up the backstory now.
A man steps up. Dressed in wragged cloths covered in a breastplate. Longbow in hand and a sword straped to his back. He stands about 6 feet tall, and looks quit muscular. Quit the rugged handsome look.
Come on you sea dogs. Lets show em what we got. Put those unholy corpse to the bottom of the sea.
With that anyone close enough will hear him say a few quick words and move his hands about.
Cast heroism on himself. Good for 40 minutes.
Firdall_Firetail |
Firdall starts to aim the frontmost cannon. "Captain! Do ye be wanting me to aim for the Kracken or the Zombies? Me, I'm not afraid of the zombies much, but I'm hoping someone else can manage the Ghosts."
Lillian Mistborn |
@GM: can i cast obscuring mist on the crew but not on the ship? That way we can target their 'ship' but they cant target us?

okay, so the monster is rammed for dmg: 6d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 3, 4, 1) + 6 = 19 force damage and all monsters on its back take dmg: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 and are knocked prone. what are the rest of you doing?
yes, you can mist the crew and not the ship
Your ship however takes dmg: 4d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 1) + 4 = 13 force damage.
Lillian Mistborn |
if we plan to try and sink their ship, i will mist the crew and that will allow us to attack the ship with extra cover from the crew

Happy Jim |
Jim struggled to keep his feet after the impact. He snarled and said, "I'm gonna gut someone today. No doubt about it."
Jim waits close to the center of the ship, ready to attack any boarders.

okay. Official action

Firdall_Firetail |
Firdall carefully amis the cannon and fires at the monster. "Choke on this, monster"
Fire Cannon: 1d20 + 12 - 8 ⇒ (4) + 12 - 8 = 8 Damage: 30 + 3d10 ⇒ 30 + (1, 4, 4) = 39
The aim of the cannon is shifted by the impact, but the shot flies close to the monster anyway.
Lillian Mistborn |
why do we get the -8 again?
-Posted with Wayfinder
Firdall_Firetail |
DoubleGold posted it in the discussion section. "this is true, it still is dex+int+bab. But they are slow firing as there is a delay from the time it fires to the time it takes for the ball to leave the cannon and this smart creature will try to dodge it. so you will have a -8 penalty against this specific creature or anything on its back. It is assumed you are proficient and under normal circumstances you have no penalty."
