Set Course For Planets of Peril

Monday, February 1, 2021

Ahoy, Starfinders! Today we’ll take our first look at the premier set of Starfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures from our friends at WizKids! This 32-figure set is currently slated for an early March release, so we’re going to have to really gun the thrusters in order to make it in before release. I hope to be able to show off photos of actual minis, just as you’ll receive them when opening a booster, but may have to resort to a few renders, as I don’t currently have all the figured photographed. Needless to say, I’ve heard the feedback about these preview blogs and am working to provide better quality content for our most loyal customers.

In Starfinder AP #1, the first iconic encounter takes place at a loading dock on Absalom Station, so it’s only fitting that our first premium set of Starfinder Battles miniatures is also a docking bay. This piece features a two-person cargo transport vehicle with detachable trailer, a bench for waiting passengers or resting crew, and a variety of cargo containers in several size, shape, and color configurations. These are perfect for providing cover for any battles that might break out while your party is loading or unloading their starship, and work well as accents with any number of Starfinder Flip Mats and Flip-Tiles.

No docking bay would be complete without aliens and starfarers to inhabit it. In two of the above scenes you can see the Pahtra Stalker (Medium Uncommon) and Cybernetic Golem (Large Uncommon), either of which you could find in a docking bay. Heck, since there are player character rules for the pahtra, you could even be one of them meeting the other one! The possibilities are endless.

Some aliens are less likely to be found in a docking bay (although, in the Pact Worlds or Veskarium, who knows?!) like the Barathu, Dragonkin, and Ksarik (all Large Uncommon figures).

That’s it for this week, but we’ll have more previews of Starfinder Battles: Planets of Peril soon!

Do these really come with clear bases?

Wow looking good.
I was very ho-hum about the case incentive. Now that I've seen it I can see it getting some use in my games. That said perhaps we can focus on some of the larger monsters in the future.

Love the fact that the preview includes actual minis, not renders.

Quick question though. Are these from the actual boosters or are they paint masters of the set?

The detail looks amazing - especially the colouring on the Ksarik and the detail on the golem. It's also such a bonus to see the face details on the Pahtra Stalker - looks like Wizkids may be coming to grips with faces. Hopefully they have remedies the issues with packaging and breakages seen in the Darklands set.

Is this set made up of small, medium and large minis or will we see huge minis in the set like darklands?

I'm very excited about this set, just need to await pricing and shipping costs.

Afraid so. That seems to be the new policy of Wizkids with all minis going forward.

Yes, all the WizKids minis will be coming on clear bases moving forward, including DnD miniatures.

Personally I find that they make for a better on the table gaming experience but the fig names are harder to read. It's a give and take.

Anyone have any insight as to why they are going with clear bases now?

That's a great question for them!

The pics on clear bases should be production mini pics and not paint masters, so they are more emblematic of what you'll receive.

The set is more akin to previous sets and not huge-heavy like the Darklands Rising release.

I believe they said it was so you could see the battlemap under the mini.

Which makes sense. If you paid for a fancy flipmat you want to appreciate all of it.

Wayfinders

The new clear bases absolutely suck.

The advantage of the clear bases is that you don't have those dark circles breaking immersion.

The disadvantage of the clear bases is that it is very difficult to read anything printed on the base. My GM generally uses the name on the bottom of a mini to identify which monster is affected by anything the PCs do -- something that will be very difficult with the clear bases.

The last thing I care about is whether the bases are clear or black. Great looking minis. Good job getting these on the market Paizo!

I never really thought about the bases of any of my minis before. But now, thinking about it, I prefer clear bases, as they almost look like they aren’t there. I’m not sure I understand why people would *want* to see the base/have the base more pronounced.

Just the reason I cited -- It gives the mini a clearly readable label. As for how valuable that is, YMMV.

Well the clear bases may have some merit if you display the minis in a glass displays case : less plastic to block the light

So why not

I think the last time I bought minis was D&D's War Drums, circa, like, 2006? I might just come out of retirement to grab some of these!

I'm curious if these are 25mm, 28mm, or 32mm scale. Otherwise the sculpts look rather good!

They are the same size as all Wizkids pre-painted miniatures - the base for a medium mini is 25mm, the base for a large mini is 50mm.
