Starfinder Playtest Wrap-Up!

Friday, October 2, 2020

Now that the dust has settled from our months-long public playtest of Starfinder’s upcoming nanocyte class and mech system, we’d like to leave you with a few final thoughts.

First and foremost: THANK YOU! Your thoughtful participation in our surveys, on our forums, and in communities across the internet provided us invaluable feedback for the new class and system. We appreciate it all, from eagle-eyed error-catching to extensive theorycrafting to putting dice to tabletop (virtual or otherwise). It was also great to hear from those of you that are as excited about these new rules options as we are—and we of course look forward to talking more about the book in which they’ll appear in coming days.

Also, we know many of you are looking forward to the final versions of these rules. So are we! We’ve been processing the reams of feedback gathered over the course of the playtest and will be tinkering and rejiggering accordingly as we further refine our vision of what the nanocyte and mech system will look like in their final forms.

For mechs, we’re focusing on streamlining any unwieldy elements and featuring a robust set of options for mech builders. Of course, we’ll also be providing a “character” sheet for you to record your mech’s details. For the nanocyte, look for a shift in the gear array class feature that is simpler to use in play, while still aligning with the spirit of adaptability and flexibility around which the class revolves.

Thank you again for making the Starfinder community an engaging, friendly, and productive place to be!

Looking forward to the final version, and seeing what else is in the book!

Thank you for doing these playtests! Getting the opportunity not only to see what is coming in the future but also getting to hopefully provide meaningful feedback is a huge plus (I think?) and I 100% cannot wait to see more developments in the Mech space in particular!

Second Seekers (Jadnura)

Can't wait to see the final products!

Got a new player interested in running the Nano, hopefully, the final version is pretty close to what was in this. She was super excited.

Look forward to it. The nanocyte was pretty solid. Though, it felt strange class revolving around modifying your body with nanites would have so few shapeshifting/appearance-altering options. And the ones that it had offered less than what you could accomplish with a level 1 augmentation or tech item.

Looking forward to the Nanocyte!

Didn't care for the Mechs as much, would have rather seen Mech vs Starship than Mech vs kaiju.

Why does the Kasatha in the lower left hand corner of the picture have a mask? This art is in the Character Operations Manual (pg. 144) and they don’t have a mask on.

Because the one in COM is a mistake on the artist's part, as kasatha wear masks in public due to their culture.

There was a mention of this in another thread joking that that kasatha was a poorly informed astrazoan who didn't realize.

Dare I ask how you guys are going to introduce mechs "this late" in Starfinder? I mean... it's kinda hard to miss a giant walking robot, let alone a bunch of them XD and that are different from walker-like vehicles.

Seriously though, if you guys could add soem lore about mechs, including which manufacturer got there first, that would be a nice touch ^_^

The Nanocyte? THAT sounds like a scientific and technlogical breakthrough, and THAT can be considered unknown until now.

The same way we haven't "missed" all the various new aliens and spaceships always showing up.

We've already got at least some mech lore. There's a planet where they're used to deal with kaiju.

We've got a lot of nanobot equipment and racial features, so no breakthrough needed. We just finally get to play the characters who focus on it to the degree that a Solarian focuses on their mystical training.

Nicely fixed here. I wonder if future printings of the COM will include this "errata"

Really nice PlayTest.
A lot of new mec(h)anics. The Nanocytes classe is really nice and even if it come this late in a sci fi universe, is good to finally get it.
Really good to have Mech to finally deal with huge monsters.

A litlle bit more about shapshifting in nanocite could have being nice (Only two Knack) but I like the concepts. Like the Vanguard this class is going to make a huge diff in the figthin monopol. Adapting is the main theme and it's so cool.

I watched the serie "Revolution" long time ago and they used some Nanocyte and this classe remind this. Really good.
