FROM: Radaszam
TO: Nevezos
SUBJ: RE: RE: Death by Meetings

It was definitely different three years ago. All these meetings...I guess that’s what happens when the First Seeker is official. Plans to make, policies to put in place, did you know there’s a Request for Additional Ammunition form? It’s a wonder anything gets done around here! Never thought I’d say it, but thank the gods for the skittermanders, eh?
--END MESSAGE--

Greetings, Starfinders! Earlier today, we published the brand-new Guide to Organized Play: Starfinder Society. While the update for Year 3 includes a number of minor changes, typo fixes and so forth, I’m here today to highlight some of the more important changes.

Disclaimer: I’m writing this blog post based on a working version of the SFS Year 3 Guide. I am also human and make mistakes. If there is a difference between text as printed here and as printed in the Guide, the Guide is correct.

Legal Table Size

As we announced recently, we’ve adjusted the legal table size at Starfinder Society tables. Tables with only two players may add two pregenerated characters of an appropriate level in order to fire, and higher-level tables where pregens don’t exist may play in “hard mode” with three players as long as all players consent. The Guide also reflects the recent change in emphasis on seven-player tables, from a scheduled option to only when absolutely necessary with organizer consent.

It Comes With Lore

Each faction’s goals have been updated to reflect how they dealt with the events of Year 2: Year of a Thousand Bites, as well as their goals moving into Year 3. Careful readers may notice some hints to upcoming story arcs! Appendix 3 also contains updated summaries of the storylines featured in Years 1 and 2 of the Starfinder Society campaign.

New Character Options

I know this is the part that everyone wants most, so let’s get into it.

  • New Races

As a result of players’ actions in the previous two years of Starfinder Society play, legacy races and the izalguun became always available for all players. As we teased in our panels at PaizoCon Online so long ago, they are now official. We’ve also added a few others. The following races are now always available for any player, provided they own the accompanying sourcebook:
Alien Archive 1: draelik, formian, ikeshti, kalo, maraquoi, nuar, rhyphorian, verthani, witchwyrd

  • New Languages

The following languages are now available for any character to take anytime they would learn a new language:
Alien Archive 2: Bolidan, Daimalkan, Embri, Ghoran, Orrian, Osharu, Pahtra, Quorlu, and Vlakan (Spoken, Signed and Tactile)
Alien Archive 3: Accaran, Akan, Brenneri, Dirindi, Dromadan, Espraksi, Hortaa, Iji, Izalguun, Koshorian, Lumos, Morlamaw, Perani, Raxi, Sazaron, Shimreen, Spathinaem and Telian

  • Ehu Hadif

  • New Faction

In the events of SFS 2-07: Four for the First, Starfinders met four candidates for the First Seeker position, as nominated First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo had announced her retirement. Players were able to vote for their favorite candidate, and in a narrow election, Ehu Hadif Ko’ra Amares of Clan Tolar, House Zye, tenth devotee from the line of Ahmu, was elected. His faction, Second Seekers (Ehu Hadif), is now available for selection and boons are available for those who choose to champion his agenda of exploration.

  • Capstone Boon

In addition to the capstone boon for the new faction, another capstone boon has been added that experienced Starfinders of all factions should find interesting.
    Starfinder of Note (Slotless Boon)
Your exploits inspire others to follow you.
    Prerequisites: Any Faction Tier 4
    Cost: 4 Fame
You are in contention for a leadership role in the Starfinder Society. Once you purchase this capstone boon, you are encouraged to send an email to organizedplay[at]paizo[dot]com with a subject line of “Starfinder of Note.” Include your character’s race, class, name, character number, and a description of 75 words or less in the body of the e-mail. That character is entered into a drawing to become a future in-world venture captain, member of the Forum, or even the First Seeker.

Boon

We included new boons in the guide, but we’ve mentioned phasing out boons. So how does this work? Well, we are starting the transition to the online Achievement Point system for boons, but that will take some time and won’t be implemented until Year 4 launches. While we haven’t made a decision on how to make the transfer of boons purchased with Fame, that is on the team’s list as part of our Year 4 planning, along with how to streamline some of the organized play specific portions of the program. The learning curve for a new player is steep and we are looking at ways to make it easier for first-time Starfinders to get involved in our program!

That about covers the major changes! We hope you all enjoy the new options opened up with this update. We’re taking a short break from these conversations before getting back into updating the Guide for Year 4. Our hope is that by starting the process earlier, we won’t have the delays we faced this year.

Until next time: Explore! Report! Cooperate!

Woohoo! Nice work, Alex (and team). I'm looking forward to meeting a crop of new aliens! I mean, agents.

Excellent!

Or is it only in my area that a human character is a rare thing?

Question - if we already submitted a character from the Luwazi Elsebo capstone should we/can we submit them again for "Starfinders of Note"?

Any word on changing the definition of a new character?

Currently I need to pass on most/all of my DM credit if i want to put something that requires a new character on them. It makes my DM credit less valuable and harder to track in order to prevent... I don't think we were ever sure what the rule was there to prevent.

New characters are level 1. Once they have enough applied credit to be level 2+, they are not "new", even if they haven't been played yet.

Does that override the previous ruling here ?

So if I want to leave room for a capstone or other thing for a new character, I put 2 xp on them then the thing i want on them, because that third xp will push them to 2 ?

I agree with BNW that this can of worms needs to either be addressed in its own Blog or in a Guide update.

Charli Poshkettle, inspired by the recent announcement of Ehu Hadif's platforms, takes a glance at herself in the mirror. She's grown a lot over the course of her career. So many changes, friends, and challenging moments of service. Although she loves being a field agent, maybe it's time for a new challenge. She opens her console, and fills out the paperwork to submit her name for the next set of elections.

Yay for 'Starfinder of Note' opening to all factions!

This whole boon redesign sounds great to me. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I've played enough of Seasons 1, 2, and 3 that I have a character in every current Tier (including a Level 12-ish character) and I've never bought a boon. D:

But aren't they both Capstone Boons? The text at the beginning of the Capstone Boons section still says a given character can only buy one Capstone Boon ever.

Unless that's wrong, the same character can't be resubmitted under the new boon, although players could submit multiple characters as usual.

(This may be a moot point since it sounds like Tonya is indicating that sending a character under both boons would make no difference anyhow. Sorry, I'm that guy.)

Boons are getting removed from chronicle sheets this season, but the replacement system won't be ready until next season?
So we're going to have a whole year/season of blank chronicle sheets?

Am I understanding this correctly?

I'm hoping we see some creative use of the items area to make up some of the gap, but... yeah, it's going to suck for a while.

Getting a blank character sheet for the 3-00 was an awful ending to an awesome season/special. I hope they both give us a ton of retroactive achievement points for it and access to something interesting for characters who have that sheet.

Absolutely heartbreaking when my overseas friend got to experience her first multi-table special at Gen Con Online and her chronicle sheet gave her nothing except for a standard amount of credits.

Especially when boons were one of the things she loved about Paizo Organized Play. And they were unexpectedly stripped away on literally her first Starfinder Society game.

It will be good to see more nuar around. My sister, Bellweather, and I have been loving service in the Starfinder Society. She quit her internship as a bioengineer to become a full time paramedic for the Society, and I very recently quit the Stewards after some concerns with organized law enforcement. I'm an independent forensics expert and P.I. now.

No, "P. I." Like for "Private Investigator," not like "Pie." No, I'm not a "cow pie." And no, I don't usually Bull Rush... that's more Zoggy's thing. Okay, now you're asking me if "Udderly" opposed to the Stewards now, or if I'm just "Milking" it for sympathy. That's real nice. I call bullsh... ah pronk, nevermind.

I believe the idea is that the Starfinders of note is the same boon that was formerly known as rising star.

Looking again, they split Rising Star into two parts. The 'Fame boost' part of Rising Star still exists and has retained the name. The 'you might become an in-game NPC' part is now Starfinder of Note.

They are both Capstone Boons.

But I also seem to have misread the question in the first place. I read "can I buy that boon too?" when looking again, the question was "should I re-send from buying original Rising Star or is that submission still good?"

I concur on the feelings of 3-00 as the fun was then lost to the feeling of worthlessness. It was like we were just conscripted army that was not worth anything beyond the minimum wage for hours worked.

I am interested to see what happens this season but been waiting on this for races and none really interest me. Glad to see new SS is not all a straight copy. That is one thing I like.

I can also say that the ACP system does not interest me at all as requires more time spent on this site and I already don't get any replies to problems I have sent in. Hope it means if last season for me that it is a lot of fun.

Just for all the folks who are saying it was a letdown that 3-00 didn't have a boon: our Most Esteemed Star Daddy has said in another thread that they've heard that message. In that same message, it was clarified that one of the perks of the AcP system is that they could, for example, go back and revisit already-released scenarios and retroactively add in a 0-cost AcP boon.

Now, no one has said that that's going to happen, and I am certainly not trying to put words in others' mouths. It's just something to keep in mind, especially for the folks who are thinking, "this stinks, I'm quitting Org Play."
