Come One, Come All, to the Extinction Curse Player’s Guide!

Tuesday, January 14, 2020

The free Extinction Curse Player's Guide is now available! From humble beginnings as members of the cast-off and cobbled-together Circus of Wayward Wonders, a handful of heroes will rise to avert a catastrophe that threatens to swallow the islands of the Inner Sea! Any kind of adventurer can find a home in the circus, from burly barbarians and flamboyant bards to nimble monks and flashy sorcerers, and the Extinction Curse Adventure Path welcomes them all. This player’s guide contains lots of spoiler-free advice to prepare your characters for the challenges ahead of them.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Extinction Curse Player's Guide Cover

In addition to character advice, this player's guide contains information about the Isle of Kortos and the Isle of Erran, and also describes the mysterious aeon towers that dot the islands. A short discussion on building circus tricks is also included in the player’s guide, although the full rules for running a circus appear in the adventure path’s first volume, Pathfinder #151 The Show Must Go On. Nine new backgrounds round out the player’s guide, including aerialist, barker, mystic seer, rigger, and—of course—clown.

And no performance goes off without a hitch. Readers of the “Life in the Circus” article in the upcoming Pathfinder #151 The Show Must Go On may note a reference to the Additional Circus Trick general feat presented in the player’s guide, but the player’s guide escaped its cage before we wrangled that feat into it. This feat is particularly useful for players who really want their characters to excel in the circus aspect of this adventure path. So here it is!

Additional Circus Trick Feat 3

General Circus
Prerequisites You must have a signature trick.

Your signature trick can have one additional trait beyond the number provided in Table 2: Trick Progression on page 63 of Pathfinder #151: The Show Must Go On. If the trick trait has an associated skill (such as Intimidation with the fire trait) and that skill is one of your trick checks, your checks with that skill to Perform a Trick aren’t penalized if you Perform a Trick using a different skill. For example, if your signature trick has Acrobatics and Intimidation as trick checks and you take this feat to add the fire trait, you can Perform a Trick using Acrobatics (at no penalty), then Acrobatics again (at a -5 penalty), and then Intimidation (at no penalty).

The big top is full and the performers are ready to thrill the crowd, but danger lurks just outside the spotlights. Come see the wonders of the Extinction Curse Player's Guide!

Yep the exact same issue. I guess we're breaking the site? Who knew circuses were such big ticket items.

Thanks all, looking into the glitch! In the interim, please listen to the circus music in my head.

Will the missing feat be stickied? Future GMs/players may not think to search blog posts.

We are planning to post the missing feat promptly in the thread on the product page—the one that is not live at the moment and the source of our frustration. :)

If anybody wants to listen to circus music that's not in someone else's head, may I provide a link to Entry of the Gladiators by Julius Fučík?

For the traditional circus "screamer march" of the same, see Thunder and Blazes arranged by Louis-Philippe Laurendeau.

Now I feel like the clown, waiting here for this to release!

Also, now that Sleight of Hand is no longer a thing what skill do I use for juggling? It seems like performance, but that's charisma based so it seems hard to make a comedy juggler who is very good at juggling and very bad at comedy.

Oh, we've got more than just a skill for juggling in Pathfinder #151 The Show Must Go On.

Ah, so I see the art theme for the guide was "the many faces of Cosmo".

Based on the art, I would say in response: "You wish."

It's not possible to add the missing feat back into the book then?

The PDF will not be updated so please share the blog with your players to get the feat. It will live on Archives of Nethys soon too.

You will see more non-PDF free online game content here in the future. This was a prescient omission.

I was surprised to see they came right out and said Aroden stole the Aeon Tower orbs. I had assumed that was going there be a big secret of the campaign.

Juggling Lore.

I'd probably let players use Thievery, or maybe even Acrobatics or Athletics in certain juggling stunts. But I have a feeling Ron might be hinting at circus-themed Skill Feats, and maybe there will be at least one or two that are related to juggling?

(I absolutely love how Skill Feats -- and even certain General Feats, such as Ride or Expeditious Search -- in PF2 improve your skills or unlock new skill actions. It's a testament to the game's tight design how elegantly skills and feats interact with each other and the 3-action economy within the Encounter/Exploration/Downtime Mode framework. :))

Hey everyone. I'm the author of this adventure and I'm super proud of it. I sincerely hope you enjoy this AP and "The Show Must Go On." Ron and I did a developer/author chat about this adventure which is up on YouTube today.

To celebrate the release, and to perhaps help anyone out there who is wondering "How does my character fit into the circus?", I'm posting 9 circus tricks for every class, starting with the alchemist.

And I was just gonna juggle flaming axes on a tightrope...

Of course, strategically "fumbling" and severing the platform" midway through, catching the rope and swinging to the closest platform, and then suddenly appearing on the other platform juggling all of the axes.

For the benefit of GMs who think to look here rather than in the sticky for book 2:

Will there be any specific callbacks to the Player's Guide backgrounds in later adventures, as was sometimes done in 1e with campaign traits in later adventures?

Basically want to know how hard I should encourage players to choose backgrounds from the Player's Guide over those in the Core Rulebook.

I too would also like to know if the backgrounds are going to have any 'specific' callbacks. Or would the only callbacks be that the rival circus performers know the characters with backgrounds that state they were employed in the rival circus?
