Choosing the Future Path

Wednesday, August 14, 2019

This week, the Starfinder Society team previews upcoming plans for the campaign. Given that we’re getting well underway with our second season of play, it’s time to talk about something that’s been on everyone’s mind: what’s happening with our First Seeker?

Since the beginning of the Year of Scoured Stars, Luwazi Elsebo has led the Society, tirelessly working to maintain the organization. With the climactic conclusion of the Scoured Stars storyline in Starfinder Society #2-00: Fate of the Scoured God, Luwazi declared her intentions on stepping down from leadership. Having accomplished the mission of keeping the Society together and stopping the threat from the Scoured Stars, she completed her First Seeker mandate. Recognizing the need for a proper transition of leadership, Luwazi will oversee the election to get a new First Seeker, then retire.

This is where all of you come in.

Arriving at the end of September, Starfinder Society #2-07: Four for the First, is a new scenario that’s set to introduce us to the four candidates vying for First Seeker. These candidates aren’t just random NPCs, but are characters who have been selected from among members of our campaign—we told you that Second Seekers boon would be important! This scenario sets the stage for allowing our campaign members to vote on their desired choice for the Society’s future leader. Since Four for the First is so important, we wanted to make sure we got the word out well in advance, so everyone has time to prepare. Now, let’s go over some of the key dates.

  • September 20th - we’ll be doing our normal scenario preview blogs that highlights Four for the First and the other monthly release. This blog will include a non-active link to a survey page.
  • September 25th - Starfinder Society #2-07: Four for the First releases to the public. At the same time, the associated survey page goes live. Players from across the world can vote on their preferred candidate, helping shape the future of the Starfinder Society campaign!
  • November 19th at 11:59 PST - the survey closes. This gives our community two full months to play Starfinder Society #2-07: Four for the First and vote for one of the First Seeker candidates.
  • Sometime in early 2020, we’ll reveal the results of the vote, which will help to shape the direction of Starfinder Society’s third year of play, scheduled for launch at Origins Game Faire June 17th 2020.

Exciting times ahead!

Just as we’ve revealed some information now to make organizers lives much easier, the team would also like to take an opportunity to discuss some key points about Four for the First.

  • This scenario is structured much like a quest pack, where the PCs get to perform a mission of importance to each of the First Seeker candidates.
  • Since so much of this scenario involves the PCs getting to know specific candidates and the types of missions to expect from them, this scenario somewhat eases the restrictions on run time. If you want to play this scenario over two sessions to make sure none of the interactions feel rushed, please do so.
  • Because we want players to get to know the candidates, and understand that may take multiple play-throughs, Four for the First will be a repeatable scenario.
  • Though players may experience the scenario multiple times, only one vote per player counts.

Ok, so that’s a lot of information, but we really wanted to get it out there as soon as possible. We look forward to the upcoming release of Four for the First because it’s really going to take the living aspect of the Starfinder Society to the next level.

Until next time,

Thurston Hillman

Great! That will ensure maximum exposure to the SFS player base. Thanks.

Candidates for the First Seeker. Hm. That time when I think I made a mistake, mentioning "build Starfinder Lodge on XXX" as goal for my Rising Star Boon character. But looks cool, I got a friend from Akiton did not said such things - hope to see him and his cloak among the candidates!

P.S. From 25th of September to 19th of November there are 56 days. Thats 8 weeks, twice 4 weeks - why you call 4 weeks a full month? Only february is such a month, other are 4 weeks + 2 days or even 4 weeks + 3 days long.

This does make sense, but I won't like that I was hoping for a Scenario like this one to be something crazy like 1-12 just any character could meet the potential new leadership :P

Understandable, however the issue is that we simply don't have the resources to make the equivalent of two interactive specials in a year! :D

Maybe one day...

That is totally fair too. I know I'm making a new character for these. I love the interactive nature that Starfinder is taking with Org Play!!

As a side note, I think it's a good move to signal that "you should feel good about taking a double slot for this particular scenario". There's been other scenarios that have run long at every table. Some stories are just big. I think it's good to claim that design space, and be explicit about it.

I am interested to learn how these 4 were selected in the first place. Were they culled from everyone who took the Second Seekers boon?

What about the many who didn’t? They have no chance to become First Seeker?

Just to answer questions about First Seeker selections. There was an internal vetting process that occurred, and was necessary to make sure that our potential candidates fit in our setting, and more importantly, didn't horribly make us break IP-infringement if they were selected (Hint: we can't put you in the campaign if your name and concept is pulled directly from other another source).

As for future submissions, I'm certainly intending on letting people re-submit for other projects in the future. Similarly, just because we're not selecting those entries for First Seeker doesn't mean that we won't select those entries for other options (like senior agents in scenarios, venture-captains, members of the Forum, and potentially new faction leaders).

The lack of Specials, interactive or otherwise, is a problem for those of us gunning for 5 Nova. That 1-00 “doesnt count” means we’re really shafted.

Is there a plan to address this?

2-00 is repeatable three times, which I am hoping will help! Unfortunately, that means that for a land-locked GM with only one set of players is going to get only 4 specials. 1-99 and 2-00 3 times.

Though it's going to get harder and harder to get those 2-00 tables to make if your players don't already have characters Tier 7 and above. If you have a relatively young lodge, your first run will be full of low-tier characters, so you will have to wait until your players start getting their second characters to mid range before the next run.

It is definitely easier to get your 5 novas if you travel, are in the US, or have access to online play. But at least the Starfinder specials only require 3 tables, which helps.

Hmm

This is super cool. Hurray for the candidates!

To my understanding that is correct, because it was made quite clear from the beginning that would be the case.

Those who reported having completed the Tier 4 faction boon were contacted by email and asked to provide a short description of their characters. Later they were emailed asking for answers to half a dozen or so questions about their character, views, what was important to them, where they saw the society heading etc.

Month after applying (sending e-mail with details from the list in the boon) I got e-mail from Paizo about them getting my application. But I never got their e-mails with questions - not about history (75 words being part of boon application) nor further questions about character.

What does that (no e-mails with questions) mean?

There was an internal screening process we had for this. With all the applicants we received, there was no way we could properly highlight all of them, and several weren't (in the mind of the Organized Play staff) suitable for the First Seeker role. There's a ton of reasons this might be the case, some of which were copyright related while others had to do with less public-facing elements and more to do with our internal plans.

When we selected the group we wanted to use, the selected applicants were emailed with follow-up questions to help us lock down the direction we wanted to go.

For our players who still have characters in the First Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo) faction, should we continue to encourage them to write-in once they reach Tier 4 with their faction?

I think so?

There will be a new First Seeker each season right?

Even if there isn't, they will still use SS(LE) as a source of new NPCs for other roles.

Correct. The idea is that we can continue to mine the Second Seekers high-tier reward in order to get new potential NPC Candidates for the campaign!
