Pathfinder Society Preview: Redeeming Playtest Points

Wednesday, July 10, 2019

Shortly after the first whispers of a new edition of Pathfinder first started circulating, we knew that organized play would play a major role in playtesting. While our team's quite experienced at designing adventures, we swiftly realized there was one thing we stood no chance at creating in 2018: fair rewards for a game whose final form could change dramatically and unpredictably based on playtest results (to say nothing of our wanting tons of Chronicle sheet feedback, so we couldn't even create long-term character records).

Yet we also wanted to reward players and GMs alike—ideally in a way that was fun, yet didn't grant an insurmountable benefit to playtesters over those who joined the campaign later. From this came Playtest Points (PTP), a currency to spend on fun benefits in 2019 once the Second Edition rules were finalized—rules with which the organized play team could create new boons once the new campaign was ready to launch. As we get ever closer to releasing the new Pathfinder Society Guide to Play, scenarios, and more, it's now time to give a preview of what's coming for Playtest Points.

There are 14 rewards to look forward to, many of them inspired by the playtest adventures. We're expecting the store to go live the week before Gen Con, at which point you'll be able to redeem PTP for boons. One of these rewards you can only buy once, whereas the rest you can purchase multiple times if you're so inspired. Just be aware that 11 of these have scaling costs, with the first copy of the boon being fairly inexpensive and duplicates being available at a higher price.

Let's take a look at some of these rewards!

Experienced Adventurer (Limited-Use, Slotless): Whether you joined the Pathfinder Society after several independent adventures or you quickly surpassed your peers during training to become a Pathfinder agent, you're a capable explorer by the time you set out on your first official assignment. You can check the box that precedes this boon when creating a new character to begin that character at 2nd level with 12 XP, 12 Fame, 12 Reputation distributed between one or more factions, and 30 gp. Include this boon with the new character.

Initiate's Wayfinder (Slotless Boon): As part of your confirmation as a Pathfinder field agent, you received a wayfinder (Pathfinder Core Rulebook 617) to carry as both a badge of office and as a useful tool. This wayfinder has an effective price of 0 gp for the purpose of resale.

Emergency Draught (Item, Limited-Use): You almost always have a healing potion hidden away for an emergency. You gain the following action.
[two-actions] (manipulate) Frequency Once per adventure; Uses 3 ❑ ❑ ❑; Effect You search your gear and draw a minor healing potion in one hand. If you are at least 3rd level, you can instead draw a lesser healing potion. If you are at least 6th level, you can instead draw a moderate healing potion. If you are at least 12th level, you can instead draw a greater healing potion. If you are at least 18th level, you can instead draw a major healing potion. This potion lasts until the end of the adventure, after which it loses its potency. The potion's effective price if sold is 0 gp.

Red Flag Espionage (Social): You have experience with delicate social situations where a false move could antagonize a possible ally or accidentally endanger a comrade. When using Diplomacy to Make an Impression or Request, you critically fail the check if you fail the check DC by 12 or more (rather than failing by 10 or more). In addition, you gain the following reaction.
[reaction] (fortune) Uses 1 ❑; Trigger You critically fail a Diplomacy check; Effect You reroll the triggering check and must use the second result.

Being able to start a higher-level character—one who could still enjoy all of our Tier 1–4 scenarios—was one of the givens when we started planning Playtest Point rewards, and even if you'd rather start your first character at 1st level, the Experienced Adventurer boon above can give your second or third character a jumpstart. Meanwhile, the Initiate's Wayfinder is a great opportunity to pick up an otherwise pricey (at least for a 1st-level character) piece of equipment that's central to a Pathfinder agent's identity. Also, we'll be providing a similar option for wayfinders through other rewards, so playtesters aren't the only folks to enjoy this opportunity.

The Emergency Draught provides an extra edge in survivability when the going gets tough, and like many of these rewards, it's a Limited-Use boon that grants a playtester a temporary boost without giving a long-term advantage over newer players. Inspired by the Doomsday Dawn adventure “Red Flags”, the Red Flags Espionage boon shows how some of our boons grant a constant benefit while slotted while also giving a limited-use boost in an emergency.

And there are more rewards besides that you'll see in the coming weeks. When redemption goes live, you will find them all on a new tab on your “My Organized Play” page at paizo.com. There you can choose what rewards to purchase and which character to assign them to, plus a downloadable pdf certificate you can print or save to a digital device.

We're looking forward to all of the exciting characters you design come the launch of the new campaign on August 1st, and it'll be great to see these Playtest Point rewards in action!

Now that the traditional Huzzah is out of the way, I'm stoked to see this and look forward to seeing the future additions too! I'm particularly happy to see the Wayfinder option :D

So.. is there a concrete date set for the end of earning Playtest Points? Or is it still just mid-month?

Dark Archive 4/5 5/55/5 ***** Regional Venture-Coordinator, Great Lakes

This is pretty awesome. I’m glad to start seeing where these are going- my only concern is that playtest points haven’t synced online in months...

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

I'm hoping that the Experienced Adventurer boon is one of them that can be obtained multiple times but with an escalating cost as that is the one I am most excited for.

Does Emergency Draught incorporate both the Interact action to draw the item and the interact action to drink it? Otherwise, why is it a two-action activity?

Sovereign Court 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Venture-Agent, Georgia—Atlanta

Interesting. I won't qualify for any, sadly. I wonder how they plan on handling Legacy boons from PF1 scenarios?

Perhaps because it's so well hidden in your gear, you wouldn't be able to dig it out otherwise? It is "for emergencies only", after all. :)

Sounds nice. Lots of nice rewards.

But I’d be a lot more impressed if my Playtest points were actually getting calculated correctly, so I could redeem some of these in a couple weeks. I’m supposed to have over 100, but my Org Play page still shows “0”.

AFAIK, you cannot earn playtest points anymore since clearly the playtest is long past its purpose.

Tech is working on that. Your PTP are not missing per say. The reported sessions are still there. It just has a code break between the reported tables and the displayed total. It should be fixed before the redemption process does live.

I met a similar response when I expressed interest in playing locally.. but it's been said in a blog that we can still earn them until mid-july.. I've been trying to learn what I need to GM a game online but might barely make the cut off date to get a game or two in..(If I'm lucky)

"As a reminder, while the Playtest using Doomsday Dawn is over, Pathfinder Society players may still accumulate Playtest Points using the four Playtest Scenarios—The Rose Street Revenge, Raiders of Shrieking Peak, Arclord's Envy, and The Frozen Oath until sometime mid-July. The exact cutoff is still to be determined."

Based on the conversation I had tonight, it sounds like we have reached "mid July" so I would not expect to earn any more PTP.

It would be nice to know how many points these boons cost and for our playtest points to have been restored. They have been missing for months now with no sign of them returning. At least that way we could start making some sort of plan for what we might want to pick up.

What is the total possible number of playtest points you can earn? I only have 3 (but my account says zero).

I'm hoping at least one boon will cost 3 points or less.

Given that the minimum could logically be one point earned at a quest-type table, hopefully the accessibility levels will reflect that.

Yes - 4 xp for a scenario, 1 xp for a single quest, and 12 xp for a module/adventure path. Same XP ratio and gain rate, just broken down a bit more to accommodate the increased quest availability.

There is no maximum. It depends on how many sessions of Playtest you reported. Some of us that ran a lot of Demos over a number of conventions have more than 100 PTP, maybe as much as 200. I wouldn’t expect most people to have more than 40-50. You earn five points for each block reported, with four scenarios and seven chapters of Doomsday Dawn. If you both played and GMd everything once, you would be right around 100.

Folks, are we not reading the comments? Paizo is aware of the glitch with the PTP. They aren’t gone. They just aren’t displaying properly. The reported events are still there. You can easily estimate your points by counting each scenario or chapter of DD as four points for playing and five points for GMing. They are working on repairing the glitch and it should be done by the time the program goes live.

This strikes me as frankly very optimistic given Paizo's record on anything relating to their website and the fact they have been missing for months. If it was an easy fix presumably it would have already have been done by now.

I GM'ed all of Doomsday Dawn. I answered the surveys, but I didn't know I could record those sessions to buy cool boons. Where would I go do to this?

You would enter it on the Your Organized Play sheet. It's just like reporting PFS, but you use -1501 for playtest character numbers.

I can only comment based on the information I have as it impacts Gen Con. I can tell you that we have no provision for 2E printed boons at Gen Con so if they don't get the PTP system fixed, we'll have no rewards specific for PFS(2), just physical product. I don't think that would go over very well.

Sounds like you're not a regular organized play participant. As such, the first thing you should do is download the free Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide that provides campaign-specific information, character creation rules, etc. The current version will be replaced with a new one at Gen Con, but you can use the existing Guide to get a feel for what the campaign is all about and how it works. The rewards they are discussing in this blog are all related to OP so if you don't play, they won't mean anything to you.

Grand Lodge 4/5 ** Venture-Agent, Colorado—Denver

Ok. I should have said "I played 3 playtest scenarios". That would mean I should have 12 points, right?

Playtest scenarios are reported the same as PFS scenarios and appear in your GM sessions log as well. If they aren’t there, they were not reported.

Of course, I will have to wait until we get the full list of PTP boons, their costs, and the new Guide to Organized play, but I will be torn on picking up the Experienced Adventurer boon for the character I'll be playing at GenCon. Having a 2nd level PC while most everyone else has their 1st level PCs or (as I suspect on Thursday afternoon) pregens will be pretty cool, for sure. But if the rebuild rules stay the same (can rebuild your char until you play them at 2nd+ level), I might elect to pass on that. I wouldn't want to miss out on being able to take the perfect background or other early game rules element from the Lost Omens World Guide. And yes, I know retraining will be a thing, but again, we won't know the implementation of it until we see the new Guide.

Just a reminder that Lost Omens is delayed and won't be released at Gen Con. So, if you play three or more sessions during the show, you'll be 2nd level anyway unless you report more than one character number.

Oh yes, I'm aware. What I mean is that I go to the show, play 3 sessions with my character, but then stop playing him until Lost Omens comes out later in August, and then make sure I don't want to do any retraining before I play him again and it's too late to do so. I recognize that I'm making a lot of assumptions here (that the 1st-level rebuild is still a thing, that credit for #1-00 isn't immediately applied, etc).

Idle question: what about unreported playtests? We all know that about the issue with unreported scenarios - I have some that are years old and still unreported. In most cases, having the chronicle sheet is proof of play, and I have that (the log sheet) for the 2E playtest, but it sounds like that's going to be useless.

Yeah, it does, which is a bummer because I don't think any of my GenCon playtest games I played got reported. Hopefully, I won't be too sad on what I miss out on. If I can afford a wayfinder, I'll be happy.

How would you even find the GM or VC of some convention you went to 9 months ago? They are essentially just some random person by this point.

Not that I have the issue (all my playtest points were recorded properly) but just thinking of my playtest experience, I have no idea who my GM was, nor who my local VC is. Most of my society play is at home with friends, or at far away conventions.

I always make sure to introduce myself to a GM if we don't know each other. Not just in case a problem arises in the future but as a friendly gesture.

I find it odd that people don't know who the other people & GM were after 4 hours of sitting at the same table together and interacting all that time.

After 4 or 5 hours at a table with someone I might be able to tell you all sorts of things about my fellow player, including what they had for lunch, whether they have any kids, what their favorite class is, whether they know how to roll attacks and damage dice together, and so on.

I am probably not, however, going to remember their name.

I don't think it's worth getting hung up on why someone doesn't remember their GM's name. That's especially true months after an event where they didn't get much sleep.

In most cases a chronicle sheet could help resolve this, but that's not exactly how the playtest worked...
