Kingmaker 10th Anniversary Campaign Begins!

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

Nearly a decade ago, the Kingmaker Adventure Path helped lead the way with an open-ended "sandbox" style adventure that encouraged exploration and conquest in a rugged wilderness. Its open-world narrative and kingdom-building elements gave players and Game Masters unparalleled freedom to explore and shape the world with their heroic actions. It has become one of the best-selling and most beloved campaigns in Pathfinder's history.

Today, we are proud to announce the Kingmaker 10th Anniversary crowdfunding campaign has begun with our friends at Game On Tabletop! You can see all the details now at KingmakerCampaign.com. Explore the books, the Add-Ons, and the Level-Ups. Help us build a bigger, better, more immersive Kingmaker campaign.

Together, we'll take your new kingdom—and the Kingmaker campaign—to new heights of power!

There's not an all-in pledge at present. At best you can do a Ruler (or Spymaster if you got that originally), and then add the things that are missing. (Mainly maps or the alternate edition bestiaries)

Thanks, NielsenE. That’s a little disappointing. I’ll look again near the end, I guess.
Cheers.

Hey Steve, unfortunately because there are several Add-Ons that are based on unlocks, there isn't an Everything pledge level.

You don't necessarily have to come back daily because nothing in the campaign will sell out before the campaign ends, so you can pledge and then come back on the last day to get all of the add-ons you want.

Thanks, Jeff. It’s no big deal (let’s face it, I’m basically asking you to enable my apathy!) It’s just how I do kickstarters - I don’t actually enjoy the hype and rah-rah stuff during a campaign, since it just suddenly goes dark for a year or two right after the project closes. I prefer to back early and think about it later.

Having said that, any chance you can add a “one of everything you don’t have” add-on for each pledge? (Or at least for the ruler/spymaster pledge, which seems to be the kind of people who’d like that).

Hey Steve, I spoke to Laura at Game On and she has a was for us to do it. We have to figure out a few things first but I think we can have something for you on our Monday evening. Give us a little time and we will come through...we always do. ;)

Thanks Jeff. Lazy Me appreciates it!

A new add-on has been advertized at $350k:
The "Season of Bloom" expansion for the hardcover adventure path adds a new storyline to chapter three, inspired by the computer game.
This would bring the book to 624 pages.

I'll be curious to see how modular the new CRPG subplots and companion quests will be in the expanded AP.

One of the appeals of the original version was the very sandboxy nature with lots of optional side plots (a fact I know paizo is aware of, and don't have any expectation they'll radically depart from). I'm glad to have more quest options to plug in -- but I expect I'll also want to quietly omit certain parts.

I'm getting a little annoyed at how just about everything is copied form the CRPG. Dudemiester's enhancements felt so much better to me as a starting point for Paizo's writers/designers/etc to build off of for what works better in pen and paper. I liked the CRPG but so much of their changes made it feel more solo player than party based. While I want more foreshadowing, the CRPG was too much by quite a long way.

Jeff,

Any idea what the cost will be for the Kingdom Tracker? I assume it will now be enough to justify the cost to upgrade to the Ruler level.

Are the Ruler level add-ons being added to pledges as they are unlocked or will they be added at the end of the campaign?

I pledged at the Spymaster level and I can see that the Kingdom Management Screen has been added to my pledges but the Kingmaker Poster Map Folio has not.

Has anyone else see the Map Folio added to their pledges or is this something I should be contacting customer support about?

I agree about it feeling that everything added is exclusively from the computer game.

The prologue is, the epilogue is (that one seems cool) & now a new middle chapter?

Having not played the computer game, i imagine the prologue takes place in Brevoy?
A friend who has played the game only said that there are lots of fights in the noble manor at the beginning.

Can anybody who played the game comment in spoilers what happens in the prologue & the what the "Season of Bloom" roughly is about?

Thanks.

Computer Game Prologue:
You meet Swordlord Jamandi, go to your room to spend the night, and assassins attack. You work your way thru the manor, picking up some npcs and finally have a battle with the assassins in the great hall. You answer some questions and that determines which of the npcs come with you to Oleg Trading post. While you only get about 300 XP, after a brief encounter on the way to Oleg, and the fight(s) there you make 2nd level.

Are the Kingmaker Map Folio and the Kingdom Management Screen supposed to be add-ons that are selectable at the Spymaster/Ruler level or are they supposed to be automatically included at that level? If the Spymaster/Ruler level simply makes them available, then everything is good since I selected them -- but if they were supposed to be automatically included, then I have been overcharged a total of $35 for those items that I mistakenly added on.

The screen, map folio, and when unlocked Kingdom Tracker should all be free auto add-ons for both the Spymaster and Ruler levels. Please contact our CS department if you think you've been overcharged.

It looks like the crowdfunding page has some reasonably good idiot proofing. When I went to the page, it showed that I owed the amount by which I thought I was overcharged. When I removed those two items from my desired add-ons, the amount owed became exactly $0, and the e-mail I received shortly afterwards listed the reward level, its current contents, and my remaining requested add-ons exactly as I want them.

Thanks!

This blog really should be tagged Pathfinder Second Edition and appear on the PF2 boards, just as the blogs on the new iconics' art do.

This would increase its visibility to the people on the boards who are currently hungry for anything PF2 related. I think not many of them know about it and even less know that the campaign has been extended.

Thanks.

season of bloom spoilers:

The Season of Bloom is the major new Book 2 plot, between killing the Stag Lord and the Varnhold Vanishing. (The trolls' role is also expanded during this time, though still a minor plot.)

In SoB, you're going along, building your kingdom and minding your own business, when your citizens begin to be attacked by monsters- owlbears, hydra, and wyverns, oh my! You investigate, and determine they are actually being turned into monsters. By what? A curse? A disease? A thin point between the First World and our own?

as the content expands with more backers, will the Bestiaries expand too?

maybe some kinda of pdf supplement if you don't want to expand the page count/cost of the Bestiaries...

Unlocking content for both the campaign book and the companion book does increase the scope of the two bestiaries. But until we really get fairly deep into making that new content, we’re really only guessing about the page counts of those bestiaries. They very well may end up being larger than we’ve stated.

Actually, from what we've heard so far, a lot of what's going to be added remains open at this point. For example, look at this thread in the Kingmaker subforum, where Mark Moreland asked for folks' preferences as to what should be added.

Interesting, I was expecting the Hardcover transition to be around the 150 page mark so still ~4 companions away after Vaerie. Makes the General a great deal compared to the Marshall, once that's hit.

Not only are you correct, you've been selected as one of the transported backers.

Unfortunately, you have been cast as Uni.

Yep, the Marshal is the worst deal to get. If you are really tight with your money, Counselor gives you more for less (but no physical books, beggars can't be choosers), and General being only $20 +shipping (+tax?) more expensive, but also adding in the Companion guide (and a slipcase) really seems like a great deal.

I'm still not sure the Kingdom Tracker is something I'd want, so for me, the (not-)faux-Ruler level is still the way to go.
(I think the dice are more useful than a possible the Kingdom Tracker.)

It's cool that you can give away the codes for the 'freebies' that you already have

A nice perk for the 1e crowd, giving them even more support if they want to run it in 1e.

Also a nice perk for those who aren’t sure they like all the changes; having the original PDFs will make it easy to mix and match the original and the updated adventures.

Liberty's Edge

Are the 1e PDFs for all tiers, even the lowest tier? So I could basically pay $50 to get the 1e PDFs as a bundle?

@Samy: I think they are, yes. You also get the "Guide to the River Kingdoms" and "People of the River" PDF's for free with any tier, AFAIK, and the Pathfinder Society Scenarios.

But we have to get to 2k backers first.

If you have some but not all of the PDFs, it may not work as well as you are hoping. The codes are for sets of PDFs, not individual ones. If you have some but not all of the PDFs in a given set, then you have to decide whether to cash in the code for that set and lose some value from the PDFs that you already have or gift the entire set to somebody else and lose out on the PDFs that you don't already have.

Similar here - count me in for a 1e Bestiary after the campaign. Might have considered more, but definitely don't need even the lowest reward level.

A 1E Bestiary isn't going to actually give you the campaign though. Just the monsters and encounters to throw in to the specific parts of the adventure they belong in.

As I said, I already own the campaign from nine years ago.

I think Cori Marie's point was that there doesn't seem to be any context in which getting only the 1E Bestiary is worthwhile.

If you already have the original adventure, and plan to run it that way, then there's no reason to get the 1E Bestiary, since you already have the stats for the creatures and NPCs that appear in the original AP.

On the other hand, if you want to run the modified and expanded version of the AP, including (presumably) various modified encounters with modified opponents, new NPCs, and so on, then getting only the 1E Bestiary won't allow you to do so. For by itself the 1E Bestiary will just tell you what creatures appear in the new AP, it won't tell you what the different encounters that the creatures appear in are, or what the dungeons they appear in are (or their locations in those dungeons), and so on.

Either way, it doesn't seem to make sense to get the 1E Bestiary on it's own.

Yeah, that's a lot of lovely reasoning, so let me break it down for you. Perhaps not everyone wanting to play Kingmaker with Pathfinder is as excited about potentially paying a double buy-in compared to what those using Second Edition are paying.

And that's fair. We're pointing out that buying the 1E bestiary alone isn't going to be worth it, and trying to prevent him from spending hours complaining about being ripped off in the future because it's not what he wanted.

Let’s not twist up our reasoning too much - this was always a 2e project, that is the bottomline. It is cool that they figured out a way to do a 1e bestiary add-on. But it has always been an add-on.

Cori Marie wrote:

Fixed that for polite conversation.

I'm well aware a Bestiary won't include encounters, but it will include new monsters, maybe NPCs, and I presume a consolidation of the individual AP monsters. That's quite useful. More useful alone than needing to pick through a P2E campaign to locate the added encounters.

So I still say count me in for a 1E KM Bestiary.
