Pathfinder Battles: Remembering the Fallen

Tuesday, March 04, 2019

Now that we've shown off all the figures in the standard Ruins of Lastwall set of prepainted plastic miniatures over the past few weeks, that leaves just the premium set for today's blog. Over the history of the line, we've switched between extra-large figures like dragons and giants and hydras and themed dungeon dressing like the Rusty Dragon Inn and the Court of the Crimson Throne. For Ruins of Lastwall, we suggested a cemetery set to WizKids, who at first seemed hesitant to do it (we later learned that they were doing a similar set in their Icons of the Realms product line). When they heard the pieces we wanted to include, however, they got really excited. The end result is one of the most impressive sets of dungeon dressing I think I've ever seen.

Each Cemetery of the Fallen Setincludes a working cemetery gate, two 2" fence segments, four 4" fence segments, a mausoleum with removable roof, a mausoleum coffin, four each of two varieties of tombstone, and two each of two stone coffins.

Cemetery of the Fallen is also the first premium set to use new packaging that displays the content inside. You can see both the packaging and a sample set all laid out together at New York Toy Fair a few weeks ago.

That wraps up our previews for the Ruins of Lastwall release, due out later this spring from WizKids. When I next grace the blog with another preview, it'll likely be about the forthcoming Iconic Heroes Evolved set, also due out later this spring. Until then, don't split the party!

I hope the reason behind Wizkids pushback to may 22nd is because of the high demand, because there are already some miniatures circulating out there shipped out by Wizkids.

I believe there's a customs issue holding the shipment from China up, but such matters are usually resolved in a few weeks at the most. Send vibes of speedy processing to all the customs agents out there!

Regarding the goblin camp palisades, WizKids has confirmed that there will be enough wall segments to make a complete circle from one set.

Thank you very much, Mark! :-)

Auggies already has single miniatures up for preorder, i guess Paizo.com will be offering singles in may?
Do you already know which pieces will be repainted as the 2019 PAIZOCON exclusives?

Have a great Easter weekend! :-)

We still have repainted promos from previous sets that haven't been distributed, so it'll likely be something from Kingmaker we give out at PaizoCon. I am not the one who decides which one we do, however.

I may have to give Starfinder another try!

Dark Archive

I am very excited for the first "Starfinder Battles" set and will definetly order a case.
Personally i think there will both be ships and dressing pieces.

I am curious about the first "premium set" and hope that it is a basic "Starship interior" set with "hull" walls, "airlocks", "consoles", "stations", "power core", "drift engine", "escape pod" & such stuff.

If Wizkids decides to do a gargantuan creature, the "Ellicoth" would be the only logical first choice, as it is the only one of that size from the Alien Archive (1).

I also don't think the first set will include huge minis, as there are only
-AHAV,
-Bloodbrother,
-Young adult blue dragon,
-huge elementals (done in PFB) &
-Mountain Eel
in the Alien Archive (1).

Minis which are very likely in the first set are:
-Barathu (medium playable)
-Contemplative (m playable)
-Dragonkin (large playable)
-Drow (medium playable)
-Space Goblin (small playable)
-Gray (small playable)
-Haan (large playable)
-Ikeshti (small playable)
-Ksarik (large plant)
-Necrovite (medium undead)
-Security Robot (s & m construct)
-Sarcesian (large playable)
-Shobad (large playable)
-Skittermander (small playable)

This is a good idea. Even better would be if said pieces match the Sunrise Maiden.

Is this a separate line of Battles? Or do you think they will alternate between Pathfinder and Starfinder? I'm not a Starfinder player, so I'm hoping we get separate lines so I'm not stuck with just one Pathfinder Battles release per year.

It is a seperate line.

I don't think it will affect the Pathfinder Battles line at all.

It will be interesting to see how the very first sets of PFB 2.0 & SFB sell, my guess is that they will be very successful.

"Legendary Adventures" will sell great because it's the first set to have huge minis and the Second Edition starter set.

"Pact Worlds" (or whatever it will end up being called) will sell great, because it's the first affordable pre-painted set for the setting.

The interesting thing is that there is a certain synergy between Pathfinder & Starfinder and a number of creatures from the Pathfinder Bestiaries will be minis in the Starfinder set(s), as was the case vice versa with the "Akatha" being in "Legends of Golarion".

So the Starfinder minis will be partly interesting for Pathfinder games & players/GMs.

Technically yes, but those four huge minis weren't part of the normal boosters set and came in their own booster bricks, which had to be ordered seperately.

They also weren't selling well.

Legendary Adventures will have (presumably six different) huge minis as part of their normal boosters set, which has also been the case with three D&D Icons of the Realms sets in the past.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct. LA is not the first set to have huge minis, but will be welcomed with their return.

Here is the New Release dates for May

At the time of posting it looks like they only have the PFBattles dates set in stone.

Pathfinder Companion, Maps Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber

The product descriptions for May releases other than miniatures are now giving Wednesday, May 29th as the street date, meaning that the overall shipping window is Monday, May 13th through Friday, May 24th and the auth window is Thursday, May 9th through Friday, May 10th.

Combined with that May release date thread, it looks like priority will be given to shipping out the miniature orders before the non-miniature orders, and that any minis subscriber wanting PaizoCon pickup will have their order split up between the minis and non-sub items (to be shipped ASAP) and the other subscription items (to be held for PaizoCon pickup)

There have been no previews of paint masters for a while, and once the set hits the shop we get one or two posts with mini counts and a rush for dressing pieces or exceptionalky good rares.

Or am I just living under a rock, that I don’t see all the marketing happening after a release?

I think by "spotlight" they just mean a few months of public sale, so that consumers will spend their money on what is actually out there instead of waiting for the next set. That's all I can think of, really. But it is somewhat of a flawed plan. Admittedly, I just buy cases so I'm not the target market for this silly request. I have to think it's aimed at people that cherry pick miniatures, right?

But here is where the problem is. I can't imagine somebody that wants an Androsphinx (Ruins of Lastwall) is suddenly going to pass on one in May/June if he or she sees a Chimera (Legendary Adventures), coming up in the set slated for release in September.

In my personal opinion, maybe WizKids should just focus on making sure their quality control is up to standard instead of wasting time and effort on worrying about when Paizo & Wizards of the Coast show off new sets. Miniature buying is generally a cumulative hobby, not a set-by-set, will I buy any of these or just wait type of scenario.

This is just how I see things, and I'm pretty biased. I'd like if someone else could better explain it.

As for marketing after release, you are 100% correct. I literally see zero. Even the brick & mortar stores around here don't go out of their way their way to promote the Battles line or Icons of the Realm line. They're always available for pre-order. Once they drop, there might be a small display, but it's usually not very prominent in a store.

Dark Archive

I agree with everything that DropBearHunter and Pigraven have said.

There is zero promotion from Wizkids beyond a product page and gallery (which is often missing a mini or two) on their website.

I also want to applaud the preview blogs from Mark, which started early enough to paint a picture of the Ruins of Lastwall set.

I really hope that Mark is able to show us the second "Legendary Adventures" preview (thanks for the early first one!) before june 11th (the pre-order cut-off), especially the identity of two of the unrevealed uncommon huge minis.

If one of the huge minis is indead an uncommon "Allgollthu" Aboleth, i want to get at least three and that will probably make me order a case.

It would be great to know how many uncommon huge minis will be in a brick and case.

there have been two instances where an early reveal might have hit sales of a particular miniature:

The Serpent Demon (Marillith) of LoG was pretty awful and the next set had the much better Aponavicious (Marillith)
And the Fire Deamon (Balor) of LoG was of lower quality than the Korramzadeh (Balor) of WotR.
I felt pretty betrayed with both cases because I had originally intended to sell surplus minis on the secondary market and had them instantly devalued.
If „giving it spotlight“ is a euphemism for „we want to get away with this s$&~ again“ then please don’t be surprised if sales take a hit from customers getting put off by your marketing strategy.

Fyi:

The case incentive for augusts "D&D Icons of the Realms" set 12: "Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus" sadly is no gargantuan creature, but a "Infernal War Machine", a tank-like vehicle with a demonic look into which a driver and six passengers can be inserted.
It's $69.99 MSRP.

Dark Archive

IMPORTANT QUESTION @Mark Moreland or @Erik Mona:

It seems that Wizkids has raised it's prices all across the board, probably because of the 25% tax increase on Chinese products.

August 2019's "D&D Icons of the Realms: Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus" case incentive is priced $69.99 - $20 higher than the incentives have been in the past ($49.99).

There is no word on booster pricing yet, but back in february the booster price for "Legendary Adventures" has been given as $17.99 - already $2 more than Wizkids boosters have been for the past years ($15.99).
The "Goblin Village" was announced for $49.99, but that price is questionable now.

These prices may now rise even further (not only for miniatures, but also for Paizo's books which are also printed in China, but that is another story).

What is now even more important to me (and likely other international buyers) is to know which (especially huge) miniatures will be in the "Legendary Adventures" set BEFORE june 11th (international order cut-off).

Now i know that Paizo Con is right around the corner and that the Kingmaker campaign on www.gameontabletop.com is taking up time and manpower, but any information about prices and set makeup would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Dark Archive

It looks like the upcoming "D&D Icons: Baldurs Gate" boosters (august 2019) will still be $15.99.
Only the "Infernal War Machine" incentive will be $20 more than the norm ($69.99).

Will the upcoming "Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures" boosters (september 2019) still be $17.99 & the "Goblin Village" incentive be $49.99?

If yes, then Wizkids seems to try different pricing strategies with both lines.

I wonder how the Starfinder Battles minis boosters & incentives will be priced.

WIZKIS INFOS FROM D&D "THE DECENT":

Wizkids wants to release their sets at the same dates each year.
That means "D&D Icons of the Realms: Baldur´s Gate: Descent to Avernus" will probably be moved to september 2019 & "Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures" will probably be moved to october 2019.

November 2019 will also very likely see a D&D Eberron minis set.

Also D&D is providing ship vehicle rules in todays "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" hardcover & "Infernal War Machines" vehicle combat rules in september´s "Descent into Avernus" hardcover.

Wizkids plans to make more D&D vehicles minis in the future as a result.

The "Infernal War Machine" premium mini will be colossal in size, has two removable roof sections and multiple weapon mounts (lightning harpoon, thunder cannon, wrecking ball).

Dark Archive

Take note that Wizkids has released both the booster art & pictures of the actual case incentive for it´s next D&D set early enough to preorder!!!

International pre-order Deadline is may 28th, exactly in one week.

If Paizo won´t do the same, international pre-orders for "Legendary Adventures" will be a lot lower, as products without art sell lower than products with art.

I have been noticing it for some time, that Wizkids is advertizing D&D minis a lot more aggressively than Pathfinder Battles minis, which they let Paizo handle largely on their own.

I really hope that we will see some "Legendary Adventures" minis info at Paizocon and/or the week after it here on www.paizo.com.

International order deadline is june 11th!

I opened up my Cemetary of the Fallen today and will have to say it is a very nice cemetary set! The only complaint I have about it is the mausoleum door. It is easy to open but difficult to close. It is stiff and therefore difficult to pull close towards you and close. There is nothing to grip on the door to pull it closed.

I actually had to grab a plastic knife and slightly wedge it in between the bars on the door to pull it closed. There really should have been an easier way to close the door, unless I am just missing it.

It does?

It seems pretty solid and firm to me. I've tried to pull it apart a couple of times and it hasn't budged. I'm afraid of breaking it.

Edit: Yeah, the roof seems to be on their pretty tight if it's meant to come off. Also, just noticed the actual bottom of the mausoleum is maybe slightly warped? It doesn't sit firmly on a flat surface, it wobbles a bit.

Has anyone noticed this with theirs?

Edit 2: Ok, opened up my second Cemetary of the Fallen. The roof is just as firm on this one (will not come off). I don't think it's meant to be removed. However, this mausoleum is 'not' wobbly at all, sits firmly on a flat surface. I will contact Paizo on Tuesday to talk about getting a replacement for the other one.

I've taken the roof off of mine with no issue. It was a bit snug at first, just like the sarcophagi, but it is intended to come off. Otherwise, there's little point in having a functioning door on it.

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber

I just tried both mausoleums again and finally was able to remove both roofs.

The mausoleum that I mentioned above that is slightly warped the roof was incredibly difficult to pull off. And now that I have it off it doesn't even fit snug on the bottom portion of the mausoleum. There is small gaps in a couple of the corners and wobbles. I'm quite certain because it's warped on why I am having issues with both parts of the mausoleum.

My other mausoleum is fine. The roof actually fits well to the bottom portion and is now easy to remove. And as I said above, the bottom portion of the mausoleum sits firm to a flat surface (no wobble).

Will need to talk with Paizo about replacing my other mausoleum. If I have to replace the whole incentive set, so be it.

This year there havn't been any PFB minis reveals at the Paizocon banquet.
That was always the case in the last years.

There also isn't a pawns set announced for Second Edition.

This blog is now 12 weeks old, i really hope we'll get a blog next week (i think Mark is on another con next weekend and i don't know if something is ready to be placed by the web team).

I think it is very important to show the "Legendary Adventures" Second Edition miniatures soon, otherwise even more people might turn to D&D, because they might be under the impression that there is no way to depict battles in PF2.

Even though i know better, i now have only 13 days left to place an order for the next set, as june 9th is a sunday, june 10th is a holiday in Germany and june 11th is order cut off.

That is not much time to make an educated decision, especially with only 4 minis from the set known to me (12 if i count the 8 from the preview pack).

So what's your point? Because it has squares, is 4'x 4' and is 2' tall I am not in the right to replace it?

The mausoleum itself doesn't sit flush against a flat service, as I said, it rocks/wobbles. The roof also does not fit flush to the mausoleum, unlike my other one.

Well, it’s really hard to tell sometimes in written replies. But when you see comments in stating the obvious, or like “It is 4 x 4, isn’t it?”, it certainly does sound like sarcasm or being snarky.
