Big Pathfinder/Starfinder Reference Document News!

Thursday, September 13, 2018

As a fan and a community advocate, you grow attachments to things you wouldn't have ever imagined you would. One of the projects I've gotten the opportunity to make my mark on at Paizo is neatly nestled into that fan/community/design challenge niche: the Pathfinder Reference Document. As it became obvious in this last year of architecting and laying out the plans for the future of paizo.com, and as the time increased between that "last updated" date and our resources began to shift course, a problem arose that we needed to solve: how do we provide our community a free, up-to-date online version of the rules for our games? Well, I finally get to share the answer with you all!

Paizo is pleased to announce that Blake Davis and the Archives of Nethys will be maintaining the Pathfinder and Starfinder Reference Documents!

As an official licensed partner, the Archives of Nethys includes setting-specific rules content as well as Open Game Content, so you'll be able to find the Golarion- and Pact Worlds–specific rules you're looking for quickly and easily.

Eventually, these reference documents will become more integrated into the paizo.com website, but for the near future, we will be redirecting PRD and SFRD requests to the Archives of Nethys website:

Pathfinder Reference Document: pfrd.info
Starfinder Reference Document: sfrd.info

During this transition, you will not be able to search the PRD or the SFRD using the paizo.com search tool—you'll need to use the Archives of Nethys search tool instead for Pathfinder content; the search engine for the Starfinder site is still in development and is expected to go live in the next 1-2 weeks.

(The AON will not be hosting a Pathfinder Playtest reference document, as those rules are transitory, but we are planning to launch the reference document for Pathfinder Second Edition with them next year.)

Both reference documents on the Archives of Nethys will remain a completely free resource, but you can help support their future growth on Patreon.

I'm so excited to see our new partnership with Archives of Nethys and our online offerings to the Pathfinder and Starfinder communities evolve! Be sure to check out the AON, update your bookmarks, and keep up with the Paizo blog for future announcements.

It does look like the Weapon Fusion table from the Armory didn't get pushed up - I'll get that addressed this weekend. If you ever spot a bug/anything off, just shoot me an email at the appropriate endpoint (bugs@aonprd.com or aonsrd.com). There's a lot of data and ultimately mistakes will happen - we can address most of them fairly quickly, we just need to be made aware of them. :)

It doesn't list level individually, but spells->custom search can give you all spells of a given school, subschool, descriptor, level range, and/or class list.

Thanks man! Clearly, you've got your work cut out for you. Now that you're official, you're going to be getting a LOT of requests for various functionality improvements (such as those mentioned by Papa-DRB in the post above).

As an aside, those people complaining that they can't filter out the books they disallow at their table don't have much of a leg to stand on.

What's this right here? Oh, it's all of the rules and player content from Alien Archive. Now not only do I not have to search through the book trying to find specific player options scattered everywhere, but I can simply set up a series of bookmarks or a similar online linking system for each book and direct my players to that.

Oh wait, Blake ALREADY DID THAT. That right there is all of the main Pathfinder RPG line's rules and content all in one place, sorted by book. You just need to go to the SOURCES link in the left sidebar of the Archive. It's near the bottom.

It's been that way for ages. People complaining about this stuff clearly haven't spent that much time in the Archives.

You are trivializing folks real concerns, and real either loss of function or incorrect information.

I am addressing specific complaints. Many of your examples weren't even things I was referring to.

Also, I never said that there wasn't lost functionality, just that "I can't easily tell my players to only use only the Core line" wasn't one of them.

I do have to add (for the benefit of everyone complaining about the change) that I personally liked the old PRD site better but from someone who works in the IT field as a Chief Information Officer ...

Change is inevitable and most people don't like change. Rather than fighting it, it's far less stressful to embrace change. Give it a try. I'm sure you will get used to it. Even though the legacy version is up on the site (thanks for that), I have personally been avoiding using it, trying to force myself to get used to the "new" format (for me, anyway).

My advice to those of you like me that need to get used to it is to give it an honest try. Pretend like the old version was never there and this is a new service that you never had before. Your experience with it will get better in time. If you wish a change in functionality, ask for it nicely. Perhaps it will happen and most of all remember that stressing about the change will likely just affect your health.

I can't tell you how useful a tool the Global Bestiary Indices is for a GM. I hope this tool makes the transition.

Well, the biggest problem is that all my URL's to all of the original PRD pages no longer exist, and they don't redirect to the new site. Spells, magic items, equipment...

djdust wrote:

It is there in the new site.

* The link "Monster Index" has the monsters.
* For the non-monster types (such as brigand, etc.), use the link "NPC Index".

Hmmm
Some Content has been Removed from what the PRD contained.

Search Nethis for Kingdom Building; Campaing Bakrounds or Mass Combat.

Seems a business decision has been taken. Probably Paizo wants people to move to their new stuff and buy it.

Nethis Archives is nice in its self, but does not encompass all the info you might be using if your running a Pathfinder Campaign and have bought all the stuff like me.

Paizo started on the promise not to behave like others who changed alle the systems and all. Now its a bit more like that.
Well, I will have to see how usable Nethis is in my game rounds.
I'll find a solution otherwise.

That's not nearly as robust as the Global Bestiary Indices are on the PRD. The number of filters, the ability to filter by APL and CR, by climate and terrain, by type and subtype, makes building encounters a breeze.

In other words, yes I realize all the same information is there, it's the functionality and presentation format that makes one tool preferable, to me.

I use the d20pfsrd for most everything else, but when building encounters I refer to the PRD for this reason.

Exactly. I've never used AON. I'm sure it works for plenty of people. It does not work for me. The organization and ability to find the info the way I need it displayed is absent. The PRD was perfect for my needs. The change to AON is a colossal let down for me at the moment.

Hoepully they will make the wise choice to reorganize the site to have the more organized functionality of the PRD.

Fortunatly Paiszo listened and put the legacy PRD up. And I can still use PFSRD which has better organization.

The WeaponFusion table had indeed been overlooked in the update; just pushed up the latest copy and all should be correct now.

These are not the "new" Aonprd, but the old Paizo PRD copied to Aonprd, so the "new" Aonprd is still missing the information.

Starfinder AoN has rules text describing how archetypes work, but doesn't appear to have any of the archetypes themselves on the site.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I can't say how happy this makes me. I just stopped using the PRD years ago as it was full of vestigial incorrect info from book that hadn't seen a new print run, making any search a spin on the big wheel to see which version of the info you'd find.

So having a single official site what also actually carries the correct info is the most I could ask for. ;)

Go to any Class page to see the Archetypes specific to that class.

Example - Note the "Archetypes" link in the header

Since Starfinder doesn't have any class specific archetypes (yet), all archetypes would be under all classes.

My suggestion would be split the archetypes away from the classes themselves and make them seperate links

So have 3 rows:
row 1 - clases
row 2 - archetypes
row 3 - drone and future companions

Or maybe make a table like the pathfinder archetypes have, simply stating which levels they replace classfeatures from and a short description.
As it currently stands I find the layout not easily readable.

The Archives of Nethys wrote:

That is a very odd decision considering there are zero archetypes specific to any classes in Starfinder.

This line in the Core Rulebook made me decide that I should probably future-proof the code and just show the Archetypes applicable per Class by default, as the day may come when there are some class-limited Archetypes:

"Archetypes can generally be added to any class, though some archetypes might note they are available only to specific classes or might have other prerequisites you must meet to select them."

That said, I'm not fully satisfied on the Archetypes layout either so it will likely see some revision in the near future.

Character Backgrounds

I'll add that while we'll need to use the Legacy site until Blake gets those rules on AON (which I believe is planned, it just hasn't happened yet), for Character Backgrounds, Archives of Nethys has had for years an excellent Random Background Generator (found under "Tools") based on the Character Backgrounds chapter in Ultimate Campaign.

The thing is AON was originally largely a player/character creation resource and some adjustments will need to be made so that it becomes the "official" PRD. My understanding is that is indeed happening, we're just in a transition period--and that's why the legacy PRD (that Dudemeister linked to) is up now in the interim.

Papa-DRB wrote:

[Referencing features not yet available on AON]

"legacy" Pathfinder PRD SPELLS CRB, APG, Bard only
"new" Pathfinder PRD (same as above URL) CRB Which are Bard. I can not show all CRB & APG at the same time.

You'd have a point, except that function on the PRD doesn't actually work properly for spells (the feats filter mostly works). Click on the spells in the list you generated, and you'll see even though you tried to filter out all books except CRB and APG, you actually are getting spells from every book regardless.

Given that there is a custom spell search function at AON (which actually works), hopefully he can add a source filter to that extant function.

The PRD Bestiary filters are also really wonky (I remember once trying to look for ONLY aquatic creatures dwelling in tropical waters, and getting results like clearly land-based dinosaurs and ants).

So yeah, we're (probably temporarily) missing some filters... several of which do not actually work. So the (probably temporary) loss (and not really a loss because the Legacy site is available) isn't as big as it appears.

As for the class feature list, he notes what sources the talents and the like are from, so you can easily ignore the sources you're not using. I actually find it easier to create a character using his resources (even with limited sources) with his site than with the PRD, and I say this as someone who has preferred to default to using the PRD before outsourcing to AON (or the other site).

Blake's announcements on the Home page of AON state that he is planning to install the majority of the old PRD's functionality into his site, and will leave the Legacy pages up until he is able to do so (so what we can't access from the current AON we can still access). I would understand that if we lost certain references and functions forever and ever, that would be really frustrating. But that obviously and clearly isn't the case. I have faith that AON is going to be developed into the resource we need--and again, we have access to the old site until that is the case.

I've always loved and will miss the PRD, even with its many flaws, but AON is a great site that has been faithfully maintained a long time, and I look forward to seeing what it will become. As it is, thanks to both Paizo and AON for getting up the legacy site while we are in this transition.

For those upset that their old PRD hyperlinks now redirect to the new legacy frontpage, I've emailed Paizo about that to see if it can be fixed, as they setup the redirect. I would hope it could - I used similar redirecting logic myself, and hyperlinks don't break there:

Example:
Old Link: http://archivesofnethys.com/SpellDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Cure%20Light%20Wound s

Successfully redirects to: http://aonprd.com/SpellDisplay.aspx?ItemName=Cure%20Light%20Wounds

Hopefully they can update their redirect to keep the same path structure and preserve old links, but I'll let them speak to that. :)

Personally I find it a welcome change. I love having all the published info on one official page and even though I liked the old site I dont mind at all getting used to the new one. As my group has moved primarily to Starfinder for the moment this really helps as it gathers most of the printed material in one place.

Looking forward to seeing this develop in the future.

Paizo should definitely take a tip from established development practices and give a deprecation notice several months in advance before retiring tools that people depend on. It's a pretty huge no-no to just kill something out of the blue. Seems like this is a good lesson learned, but hopefully it is remembered for the next time.

Like some of the others, I used the PRD and AoN for different things.

Archives of Nethys is great for character options. It's comprehensive, it lists sources, it is setting compliant, and, it's my go-to reference for use when making a character. That makes it very valuable, and I'm immensely grateful that it exists.

But I preferred the PRD for rules text and for monsters, in large part because it was thoroughly cross-referenced.

I agree 100% with this.

Plus I loved having the "books" on the side of the webpage ie Core Rulebook, Ultimate Magic etc. cause if I knew where something was that I was looking for I could click on the "book"

PF/SF + AON = +5!

I logged into my Paizo account for the first time since my last post in Feb, just to say THANK YOU! To everyone involved. And congratulations to AON!

For a long time I used PRD and AON pretty equally, almost interchangeably. As we've gotten further from the last PRD update, I've found myself almost exclusively using AON. I am truly glad to see this relationship develop! And I look forward to seeing how it evolves!

So... I don't know if anyone has asked about this or not, but the stats for the Core Iconics are no longer a part of this PRD. Is this intentional or will they be added at some point in the near future? Yes, I know I can use the simplified Iconics over at the d20PFSRD, but I liked that they were available on the Paizo PRD and used that more often than not.

Note that the iconics posted there are NOT the versions used in organized play. They are taken from the NPC codex or fan created. One difference is that they don't have Traits.

The correct pregens are found through the organized play section at https://paizo.com/products/btpy9a64

I apologize if this is not the place to ask, but my search-fu stinks.

Where can I find "Undead Traits" on the AON site? I have been searching for 15 minutes and can't find it.

On the old PRD & on d20PFRD, it is under Universal Monster Rules, but I can not find that entry on AON.

The front page news notes the Universal Monster Rules is one of the sections still in backlog.

He's been adding loads of additional content so hopefully it will be there soon (it's a lot of stuff because it's a compilation of content from several Bestiaries).

In the meantime as you note you can use the legacy page.

Ah, thank you DQ. I did not read the front page. I will do so in the future.

I found the rules in the Legacy Page (and D20PFRD) so I was ok. In fact, I have both the new AONPRD and the Legacy Page bookmarked, as well as D20PFRD. I try to find what I need on the new AONPRD first, but if I get frustrated, switch back to Legacy or d20PFRD when I really need the data.
