From the Raging Heart of a Swirling Sandstorm Comes... the Mummy's Mask Preview

Tuesday, September 27, 2016

I have said in other blogs that each Pathfinder Adventure Card Game set takes on the personality of one of Lone Shark's designers. With its sun-parched sense of derring-do among the pyramids, the Mummy's Mask Base Set coalesced around Liz Spain's pith-helmeted madness. For today's preview, Liz has been presented with the challenge of writing this preview in the style of a desert-blown romance novel—a challenged that was embraced. Enjoy!
—Mike Selinker, Adventure Card Game Lead Designer

Osirion! Land of ten thousand years of love and loss! What mysteries will you unveil under the light of the burning orb? Reveal to your fair traveler that which beats beneath a cover of blistering sand!

The wind howled in protest as the traveler strode out alone into the storm, heeding only the call of her own desires. The dust threatened to steal her breath, but she grasped at the cowl of her cape to protect her face.

The desert can swallow you whole.

Designed to withstand the dangers of exposure in the desert, the dense weave of the sensuously smooth cloth danced across her skin. The wind breathed her name, a name born of wind itself: Simoun.

Masters of elements—air, fire, and steel.

The weight of her old armor gone, she felt more free despite the danger that lay in wait. Here in Osirion, trappings of metal and leather were not what they seemed. Though her precious vestments would do little against steel, they were a comfort beneath the elemental electricity that danced above.

In Mummy's Mask, armors and weapons don't do what you expect anymore.

In this place of cultures more ancient than humanity, Osirion has not lost its teeth with age. Here, Pathfinders are survivors who know the secrets of the elements. To the rhythm of her drumming heartbeat, Simoun prayed the lords of lightning would spare her another night.

In the desert, staying alive is challenging. You'll need resources.

The dry storm raged on, cracking the dark sky with brilliant flashes of lightning, illuminating the rolling dunes. The caravan was not far away. Simoun hoped to find succor from friends there, or at least enemies of enemies, but until then she took cover in the night.

You never know who you'll meet in the desert, or what they serve.

She set her jaw, determined to find her prey first, somehow, amid the blinding dust. Her boots slid swiftly over the shifting dunes, as shapes of dead things emerged and were buried just as quickly by waves of sand.

Barriers do strange things in this set.

Tomorrow, life would move on, driven by the sound of footfalls proceeding ever westward, punctuated by the sighs of discontented camels. But tonight, she was the huntress. She heard his call carried on the wind. Despite the ravages of the poisons and hungers within her veins, she pressed on.

These scourges will plague you till the end of days.

And then, she froze. A bolt of blue electricity revealed him, hovering over her, huge and powerful, his wrappings in tatters. They would dance, blade and bone, her will against his. Steel and song swirled amid sand in the storm. The air was his domain, but so was it hers. She would tear him apart, even if it took her all night.

With the Trigger trait and monsters doling out scourges, it's hot times in the desert.

As the dawn light gilded the calming sky, she threw off her dust-caked cape to approach the caravan. An Aspis Consortium trader was there, awaiting successful adventurers seeking to exchange goods unearthed from the ruins. Busily coaxing the camels to wakefulness, the merchant noticed her wicked smile.

"Interesting night?" Falsin Deek grinned.

"I wouldn't have it any other way." The young Djinn coyly asked, "Trade for dragon teeth?"

His grin widened to reach both ears.

When you return from adventures, you can now trade your goods at the markets.

As they concluded their dealings, the rest of the caravan grumbled to its feet. With the sun at their back, they marched toward the River Sphinx over sands that held ten thousand years of history. A new adventure awaited them all.

My order doesn't show any promos - but I started my subscription with just the Character Add-on. Are the promos coming with the Base Set this time?

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

Promos are associated with the Character Add-on Deck. You should see the promos in the "authorization email" which just started going out yesterday. And they can take a while to run. I got mine 13 hours ago from this post. But they haven't finished yet, so don't worry if you don't have yours yet.

So, if you are simply looking that the "my subscriptions" part of the website, then you won't see the promos. But you should see them in the authorization email (which is the one that gives a shipping estimate).

Does that help? Where are you not seeing them?

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

I received an email last night about the Summoner Deck and Character Add-On deck, that only listed the two decks:
Image Link

It does show the 'S' to indicate that it is a subscription order, so I'm assuming it will come with the extra cards? I just thought it was strange that others said it listed the promos in their email as well.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

Hmmm... that is strange. It wouldn't hurt to contact customer service. Post in that forum and they can look at it for you.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

I'll do that, thanks!

This Adventure Path looks and sounds great. I just hope the designers learned from WoTR and how the difficulty of that was received, and this is more of a return to the fun and polish of RotRL. Here's hoping.

Personally, I loved WotR with the extra difficulty, but since that was the specific "shtick" of that AP, I'm not expecting it in this one.

According to the first link I found on the internet, "Pakhet" means "She who scratches". Zaister's onomatopoeia/lioness theory is my favorite so far.

I'm calling it: an Animal Gambling Ally that synergies with BoBastet!

(also possibly Divine, but in this set - much more likely Undead!)

A Miawwwww Packet? Is that a whole bunch of Pokemons ? If so Beam me up Scotty there is no more any intelligent life form alive in that pyramid.

Just kidding while waiting for the next Mummy's Update.

I actually upped my shipping to priority mail for this one. Watch it doesn't ship til the end of next week now.

EDIT: Also, I think Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle is the primary barrier.

I had things in my sidecart, so I'm already resigned to the fact that mine won't be shipped until the last day or 2 of shipping :(

I can't wait to get my hands on this, super excited!

Show a little self restraint people - most folks in europe that need to get the base set locally won't get their hands on it before november ;)

I haven't even had a shipping estimate for my add-on deck yet...

If you didn't get an authorization email, contact Customer Service ASAP, as those all finished up last week. Shipping starts this week, so you don't want to miss out on the window.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

I don't know that they finished up yet or not. The October Release Thread says they started, but I don't see that they ever confirmed it finished. They usually do that.

I got some email about the payment being authorized or something?
But it doesn't show any promo cards, and I got the email twice with a 10 minute delay.
Maybe I'll check back with them, this is my first order via paizo.

I can't speak for those that are getting just the character add-on deck (I'm getting the base set too). But, the way it is supposed to work is that you will get the promos for subscribing to the character add-on deck. So, if you aren't seeing them, I suspect there is some kind of glitch.

I can say that right now, if I go to My Account and view my Order History, I see the Base Set, Character Add-on Deck, and promos.

If you can't see the promos with your character add-on deck, or you have any concerns, I would contact customer service. Don't worry, they are great and will make sure you get what you should be getting.

I thought my order would be processed last since it is oversea shipping and then the weekend hit, but I guess it's better to stay on the safe side and ask them about it. Thanks for the encouragement.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

No problem. And also, their customer service is great. They will make sure you get what you are supposed to get.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few things Simoun can do with a knife. There are some examples already of knives that do more. Isn't there a knife in the Alchemist class deck that has a few discard powers? One for extra dice on combat and one for ingnoring BYA powers? Or what if she gets her hands on a Dagger of Doubling like in the Goblins Fight deck? That would be interesting.

But, we'll have to wait and see.

The Galvanic Chakram +1? So Simoun is meant to be Xena?

If you had an issue with your promo cards not displaying check this post. You should be seeing them soon, if not already.

I'm anxious to get my copy of the game, but my wife and I need to finish Wrath of the Righteous first (we just finished Adventure 4 yesterday).

My wife is very excited about Mummy's Mask (as am I). She loves Ancient Egypt even more than me. I guess we're going to have to push our crusaders to their limits.

Yeah, I never got around to finishing Wrath, either. I should...but I'm having more fun with organized play. I'll get around to it at some point - then I'll take the Broken Token organizer out of that box, because I can't imagine I'll be going through it again. I'm with Klandestine and Longshot11 in hoping that we not see a repeat of that sort of thing again.

Yeah, got the notification as well!
Won't hold my breath though, since the expected time of arrival is between the 24.10. and the 20.11...

I'm new to the whole Pathfinder universe, been playing the app and should be receiving my copy of Runelords tomorrow. This set looks really interesting though so probably getting it next. I've been reading the cards though and there's a couple of things I'm wondering about;

-On Zadim's card, his last power says "You may discard a weapon that does not have the 2-handed trait to add your Stealth skill to a combat check by a character at your location." Does "a character" include Zadim himself or does it mean "another character"?

-Elemental Treaty says "Display this card". Does that mean you leave it out and it doesn't need to be re-revealed or count against your hand size? Does the "you" when closing the location refer to the player who played it, or to the player who's closing the location?

-When Dry Quicksand is displayed and your token is in the location deck, do you miss your turn until another player reveals you again?

Hopefully these aren't too inane questions...

Questions are almost never inane. Yours certainly aren't. The second one has had numerous threads on it, none of which I can seem to find to reference.

Re: Zadim - Yup! You are a character at your location. You are not another character at your location.

Re: Elemental Treaty - Display means that it is no longer in your hand and does not count against your hand size. The "you" is the player who played the card.

Re: Dry Quicksand - We're not entirely sure what will happen with this yet. It will be in the Mummy's Mask Rulebook.

Thank you, at least I'm asking the right questions. :)

Earlier in the thread, Vic gave us this:

Rulebook wrote:

NEW: TOKENS IN LOCATION DECKS

Some cards require you to shuffle your character token into a location deck. You shouldn’t know where your token card is while you are shuffling. When your token is examined, encountered, or would be returned to the box or removed from the game, remove it from the location deck and place it at that location. While your token is in a location deck, you may explore, encounter cards, and play cards; you cannot move, and you must evade any banes you encounter.

So you don't lose your turn, but you can't move and you apparently just shuffle monsters and barriers that you encounter back into the location. Until you or another player encounter your token card. And NO PEEKING while you shuffle.

As I mentioned earlier, during the MM demo, all the information on Dry Quicksand was on the card itself. Vic has his reasons to move all of it to the rulebook, but I do feel that "evade any banes you encounter" in particular is going to be unintuitive enough that people are going to miss it while their token is in the location deck.

(I sleeve the set so I don't have the issue of "I see you, token!" when shuffling)

I wonder if there is any blog art of the iconics in peril? It would be fun to make some "custom" tokens for Dry Quicksand.

For the Gen Con demo, Dry Quicksand said the following: "If undefeated, display this barrier next to your location, then shuffle your character’s token card into your location deck. While your token is in a location deck, evade any bane you would encounter and you may not move or be moved. When a character would encounter your token, instead put it next to the location and banish this card."

The problem was, that was a pretty full card, yet it *didn't* mention that you *also* get your token back when it's examined, would be returned to the box, or removed from the game. Still, I was trying hard to keep those rules on the appropriate cards instead of the rulebook, and if Dry Quicksand were the only card that did that, I probably would have found a way to make it happen. But the Sand Kraken—oh, lord, the Sand Kraken...

Hmm... the fact that this is going to be part of the rulebook makes me think I should create a character built around taking advantage of these rules. Perhaps a rogue or slayer that can be shuffled into a deck in order to fish out boons, and has a power letting him/her come back out of the deck to fight a specific monster instead of evading... :-D

Unless you're being sarcastic, doesn't that cover, like, every piece of Iconics art ever? (their token 'portrait' excluded)

Incidentally, can anyone think of a scenario where unidentified location deck card would be removed from the game? I'm starting to get a bad feeling about that Sand Kraken...

Exactly my thoughts when I first read the full Rulebook entry. It seems really arbitrary that a character is able to explore and encounter boons as normal, but then he cannot encounter any banes. If anything, considering his 'trapped' condition, I would pretty much expect the contrary - "you may not evade banes". My money is definitely on this as a 'most commonly forgotten rule' candidate.

Hello,

With my group, we played the previous adventures paths using the Iconics Heroes minis. We really find it was a great experience that was enhancing the game.

Do you know if minis for Mummy's Mask will be produce ?

Yes. Don't mix Dry Quicksand with the Black Magga/Turtleback Ferry scenario from RotR. Unless you want to risk having your token eaten from the bottom of the location deck.

Heh, that's a good one. It's not strictly 'remove from game' though, so I'm not sure the Rulebook wording would safeguard against the Magga; but I guess these are exactly the the type of wonky interactions Vic was trying to saveguard against.

The Magga, iirc, would 'return to the box' your token but only at the end of scenario - so if you play alone, the game could indeed become unwinnable.

I think the rule is written that way to cover the two possible states of seeing it in the location deck (examined or encountered) and the two possible final states (returned to the box or removed from the game). That way, if they ever do some "legacy" style scenario where you are removing cards from the game, your token is safe.

Good god do not make me rip up the cards for this game. I had enough trouble ripping up the cards for Pandemic Legacy, and those are supposed to be ripped up.

(No spoilers please, I've only completed up to May.)

Yeah... I have a spot in my Pandemic Legacy box for all of the things I'm supposed to have ripped up. It's tough enough for me to put stickers on the board. Someone put one in a wrong spot last session and oh, man, it irked. ;)

It's a "Legacy" style game, where you make irreversible changes to gameplay as you play through the "season". You put stickers on the game board, you put stickers on cards and in the rulebook, all of which update the gameplay based on choices you've made or things you succeeded or failed at. It's cool, but only meant to be played through once, which is a turn-off for many people. One thing I do like about Pandemic Legacy is that, at the end of the season, you have a game board that you can play "Standard" Pandemic on as many times as you like, but with some cool twists/changes to the rules.

Derail on Pandemic Legacy:
Pandemic Legacy is the best non-PACG board game I've played in years. It takes the base Pandemic game, and changes it as you play it. Each game you get two upgrades in the form of permanent stickers that could change anything, but if bad stuff happens it could potentially change the board dramatically. In addition, there is a Legacy deck that you consult at the beginning of each game, which directs you to open up different advent-calendar-like doors on a file or sealed boxes to add new pieces or stickers to dramatically change the game.

I'm slightly less than halfway through and I've having so much fun.

I mean, I couldn't actually bear to throw out the cards, so they're sitting ripped-up in the box, but I did actually rip them up! I figure I'm already destroying the game with stickers, might as well rip up the cards too.

Again, don't get any ideas for this game though.

I'm still kind of shocked that they advocate writing on the character cards in the instructions. Who wouldn't put penny sleeves over those things and mark up those?
