Thod gave us an auto assist, I think Tal is waiting on potential buffs from Priscilla, and then he'll knock and roll for bluff.
Chanix |
Oh nice, I misread that. I guess I'll actively assist to move this along.
Priscilla Daystar |
As far as the game goes guys note this is my first pathfinder game ever. I bought the main book but this is my first time playing. I have had plenty of AD&D, black eye, 2nd ed, 3rd, 3.5 and 4 experience though ;P
LOL on the buff request.
Here you go.
To Thod,
Thanks a bunch for setting the game up, the setup is awsome. I was worried a bit the whole gameplay without the visuals but this great.
Chanix |
Thod was the one who mentioned buffs first, I think it was just a general heads up / nudge more so than a request. I don't think any of us particularly need buffs at this point either.
Tal, let's do this.
(unless you want to wait for Toren or Markus to weigh in.)
PS: this is my first PFS and PBP game.
Chanix |
HAHA TAL! crucial bluffs
I only need a 10+ to assist. So +2 all that.
Chanix |
the suspense of this encounter is driving me nuts.

Initiative in PBP
One problem of 'the flow' in PBP can be to wait for someone else.
For this reason I tend to roll initiative for everyone ahead of a fight.
Please don't feel you have to post in this order. Otherwise a combat round will take half a week. Post as best as you can. Yes - sometimes an act posted afterwards will change a post already done / sometimes a post done later gives clues what happens afterwards.
This is the trade off playing PBP and moving it forward. But I think it works better this way as you want to keep the flow and excitement. Worst case the GM can allow a re-roll or alternative action because something posted before changes too much what you truly would have done.

Oh man, I never thought of a non-lethal approach. Is this a characteristic of society members? Chalk it up to chaotic good for this one...

No worry - the lethal approach is still the one used most often. But I thought I mention it as Priscilla seemed less inclined to just 'finish off' the guard she was flanking.
I would say - while not a PFS characteristic - it surly is seen more often there. And playing with many different people has opened my appreciation for many different play styles.
Oh - and the manacles was my son - 9 or 10 at the time. Was one of his first purchases after his first or second game.
Priscilla Daystar |
Didn't mean to go all pacifist on you there and I was a bit confused by the mins. I did not realize I was adjacent to the enmy. The stabilize was meant to keep some for questioning.
But it all works :)

Sometimes faction missions require questioning certain NPCs...which can become quite difficult after they are dead. So if there is an enraged Barbarian threatening to kill the entire party and, instead of drawing a weapon, someone walks up to him and says "easy there big fella"...chances are that person is trying to complete a faction mission. 8-)
Toren "Stand" Still |
I'll admit, it took a LONG time for me to even consider non-lethal approaches. I've been on a kick the last couple years to play lawful good type characters. In my other PbP I just had to chastise a party member for killing the Gnoll I tied up and was trying to question.
It's tough though to decide what to do afterwards. It's just so darned easy to kill them rather than have a magic user "waste" a suggestion or charm spell.
Chanix |
Yeah, I mean, I'm pretty reasonable and my character isn't totally daft. Had it been mentioned before hand that we should question these mercenary kidnappers; I would have thought "Oh yeah! Good idea." regardless of faction missions.
Seriously, not trying to step on toes!
Roll for forgiveness 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Roll for forgiveness 1d20+1
No worries...after all its part of the role playing experience.

Mr 'seems convinced' makes me want to stab him. Also, I think there might be some confusion about who is talking to who right now.
Chanix |
Wish I could roll this well in my real games.

Searching and loot:
You can always Take 10 (or 20) when you have time. I'm not handing everything out automatically.
In case of Chanix - he was looking for traps - so it made a lot of sense he was especially careful at looking at the floor. So beating the DC by 5+ it just made sense that he found the hidden compartment instead.
edit: oops - missed Artemis 'poking around'
Chanix |
How does PFS loot work? We can't keep any of it can we? It is all assumed sold and factored into our end campaign gp earnings? Is that right?
Thod |
Loot
Everything you find can be used during the game. For example - the MW long sword can be used by someone until end of the scenario. It then gets 'exchanged' for money.
Consumables are a strange beast in this respect as you can 'use' them and still get the value for them.
Another one are magic items. You might find one cloak of resistance - but after the game it appears on every players chronicle and everyone is entitled to buy one.
This is against the grain of verisimilitude - but it avoids squabbles and makes it fair for everyone.
Thod |
Just an ahead warning. I will be helping a friend, fellow player and colleague later this week. I will be off home Thrusday afternoon to Saturday evening.
Friday to Saturday lunchtime I will be in he Netherlands. I will try to keep posting as much as possible but will do so from my phone while on the UK and likely not at all while abroad. You pay a lot of roaming charges - unless I find a free WiFi that is unlikely.
Thod |
Surprise rounds:
They can be difficult to handle as you don't always want to spring a trap on the group - at the same time having the NPCs being surprised can end in a fight being over before the enemy even could lift his weapon.
Chanix actions don't make it easier as his intend is to 'shadow' the brute - but the rules are simple - surprise round = 1 move OR 1 standard action - which would severely handicap any creativity in Chanix actions.
Not having a board pre-built adds to the problem as you can't move characters along. So I tried I find a middle ground between ending up at a 1:1, nerfing Chanix, or ignoring surprise completely.
So I counted the Stealth rolls to give Chanix the moves needed and for Tal to act thanks to his high roll on perception.
---
Chanix |
Ah. I didn't realize about the single action surprise.
I had it in my mind that I see him pass, I come down out of my nest sneak up behind them in the crowd, hear Markus and him back and forth, SURPRISE, attack.
But, I appreciate the way you handle it. Not trying to exploit action economy. If you had regulated me to just a move action or ranged penalty for throwing daggers from distance I would have been ok /understood.
Thod |
Chanix
No problem - I completely understood what you had in mind - that's why I just ruled as I did. There is no sense in asking for several extra rolls - do get to the same results.
But I thought I give a quick explanation as 'surprise' has a defined meaning in Pathfinder. Also to ensure you are aware what can / can't be done in case of rules interpretation by the letter.

BAH! Wish I had thought to take bets!
Markus 'Earthquake' Kalepo |
Thanks guys for being patient.
My faction mission was a lot cooler this way.
"Have your team beat up the guy that's going to attack you" just doesn't seem right.
BAH! Wish I had thought to take bets!
We should have taken the fight out onto a major street. This is a pirate city right? They'd have been all over that action.
Chanix |
Well I'm glad it was handled this way. "Beat up" doesn't translate well in Elven. I would have stabbed him to death.
Thod |
You really keep me on my toes ...
You had him already below 0 but ferocity kept him up another round. Now you started to get him really low and I needed to check what happens when non-lethal > HP and Con
But seems he just takes lethal one - so he is still alive but pretty badly beaten.
On a different note - players for my F2F just arrived. Game night - wont post for the next 4 hours.
Chanix |
Just teasing btw!
Chanix |
It started innocently enough...
Tal sheathes his sword and checks on the clearly distraught Priscilla. Despite his obvious discomfort with personal contact, he gently puts a hand on her shoulder.
...and evolved into this
Markus glances at the hand on his shoulder.
I'm teasing but I'm also laughing at the idea that Tal went to console Priscilla (with his eyes closed) and put his hand on your shoulder by mistake.

There are times when I wonder,
What is the monkey doing right now?? WHERE'S THE MONKEY!!
But, I don't say anything.
