Singles Bar

Friday, November 13, 2015

Do you have a favorite bar? I do. It's called The Rusty Dragon Inn, and it's coming your way in prepainted miniature form in January! Over the last few months, I've been previewing figures from the upcoming Pathfinder Battles set, and with last week's preview, I've revealed all of the new sculpts in The Rusty Dragon Inn set.

I have not yet revealed the final version of the special limited edition case incentive. I'm happy to correct that now with this amazing image, courtesy of our friends at WizKids:

This image includes two complete case incentive sets, plus a lot of figures and some dungeon dressing from the full set. The final piece list for a single case incentive box is:

  • 3 Long Barfront Sections
  • 1 Corner Piece
  • 2 Bar Shelf Sections
  • 1 Table
  • 6 Bottles (2 sets of 3)
  • 2 Barrels
  • 1 Small Keg
  • 4 Stools

The table and barrels are alt-deco repaints of the standard table and barrel from the main set. Everything else is a new sculpt unique to the case incentive. I'm very excited about the look of this incentive, and I hope that it will bring life and excitement to your fantasy RPG campaigns.

Canny readers will also notice a couple of familiar faces from earlier sets among the assembled crowd in this image—Feiya, Human Witch, and King Irovetti. Both of these figures are intended as replacements for previously released figures that simply did not meet Paizo or WizKids's quality standards.

I have confirmed that these two replacement figures will be inserted together randomly into boosters in the set, at an intended rate of 1 pair per brick. These replacements will not replace any figures (the booster they are in will contain 6 figures).

Finally, I'd like to talk a little bit about singles, and particularly singles on sale here at paizo.com. For past sets, we have stocked a very large number of single figures for sale on our website. We still have stock on hand for many older figures, allowing customers to pick and choose and to take their time in deciding which specific figures they would like to purchase.

Starting with The Rusty Dragon Inn, we're changing the way we offer singles for sale on paizo.com. We will have a limited selection of figures available for roughly the first two weeks after release, but following that we will not be offering any singles for sale for this set. You will likely be able to get them from other retailers, if you must, but I want to give an early warning that supply for The Rusty Dragon Inn will likely be significantly lower than in previous sets. No longer will we be offering enough figures to last several years. If you prefer to "pick and choose" your Pathfinder Battles figures, I HIGHLY recommend that you do so as close to the set's official release as possible. I definitely cannot guarantee you will be able to wait and choose. In fact, I can guarantee you that you won't be able to, at least here at Paizo.com.

As with previous sets, the best way to ensure that you do not miss a single figure is to set up an ongoing case subscription or preorder a case today.

We'll be back next week with a look at more miniatures goodness. For now, it's Friday evening, and I'm headed to the bar for a drink!

Wow. I don't buy or use miniatures any more, but I always enjoy these posts and seeing what's out there, and I have to say, this would be an amazing piece to have (or pieces, in this "case")!!

It almost seems a shame those stools are going to waste, though. Wonder if it would be possible to have minis that are in a seated position- that you could sit on top of the stools, or tables, or bar, or even other sorts of pieces (mounts)?

Can you shed any light on the reasons behind the shift in policy on selling single minis? Is it purely the logistical/warehouse problem of maintaining a large number of individually orderable (yes, that's a word) items over many years?

Or does it relate in some way to the number being produced/distributed/etcetera?

EDIT: I appreciate I have no right, nor even any real need to know that. I'm just curious. :p

That looks awesome! And I'm glad that Feiya and Irovetti are going to be relatively easy to grab. That's good news.

As for sitting tavern-goers, if you're not afraid of painting your own, you could look here.

Incredible!
You didn´t promise too much Eric.
I am looking forward to january 27th for this beautiful scenery pack.
Also it is great to get 4 stools!
Thanks a lot!

I second Steve's question. Since one of the benefits of the Battles subscription is a discount on purchasing singles, it's a bit disconcerting to hear that there will be less of an opportunity to use the discount in the future.

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber

Like the bar and this set immensely.

Two questions...
With a case subscription, will the case incentive be automatically added to an order?
I am considering one case and two case incentives - would there be a discount on both case incentives?

Thanks.

That's pretty cool! I especially like the drunk guy with his head on the table.

The bar looks awesome. Extremely disappointed that you have to order a case to get one bar set. That is just plain evil.

How it should be is that you can order a bar by itself.

If Paizo don't sell out of cases in the meantime, you'll be able to order a bar on its own once the next set is released. There are also other online retailers where you can order them on their own.

They wouldn't really work as a case incentive if retailers could buy them without buying a case.

I guess that makes a bit more sense.

If you have had a single of Freiya sitting in your sidecart since it was able to be ordered....will it be fulfilled from the new Freiyas??

Edit: to be honest, I wouldn't be unhappy with one of the old Freiyas, I can always repaint the face.

Erik, do you have any idea what is displayed on the bottom of the bases of King Irovetti and Feiya? I'm just trying to figure out if these are considered Promos, or if they contain the info from their original sets, or if they have the Rusty Dragon set marks?

WizKids did a nice display with this picture and I am starting to feel the need for getting 2 of these sets :)

Watch out on that. Supposedly, the problem with the old Feiya isn't just the paint job. The paint job was a result of the sculpt on the face, which simply didn't have the features necessary to make the paint job look right. So it might be a bit more tricky to make a good-looking one than you might expect.

Scarab Sages

Repaint her wearing a veil?

not happy about the new singles policy, but I'm guessing it will give more customers to the other single retailers, who will then buy more cases.

Hoping the updated Feiya isn't too hard to find. I love the Pathfinder Battles minis--the best out there, I really believe it--but I went all out finding her the first time and have never been as bummed out by a bad mini as I was with her.

I was happy to spend the money to pick up the Iconic Heroes box to update the kinda not good versions of Sajan and Lini (and WOW, was the second go at those two phenomenal! 1,000% improvement between the originals and the boxed set versions!) and I'm hoping Feiya will be equally easy to obtain. That original sculpt was such a heartbreaker.

Keep up the good work! Every set keeps getting better and better.

I suspect it's more on the line of staff having to open 100 cases and sorting minis into 53 bins then having space to store it all just to be able to sell at least 100 of any figure. If you want to have at least 500 to sell, multiply that time by five. Erik didn't mention repaints. I suspect Paizo will have those. Open box. Instant access to hundreds of the same mini. Nice and easy.

All three of the center bar pieces look different? It was said 2 cases would get everything you need, but what's the deal with the three different bar looks? I can't even get 2 cases, but was curious about why there appears to be three different looks not including the end pieces? That would be insane! I hate the idea that I need two cases to get what's displayed to begin with! Please tell me I'm wrong and misguided tonight!

A lot of factors went into the decision. Restocking, warehousing, and logistical concerns were certainly factors.

We will continue to sell singles of sets as they release, and future restocks are likely, but it is more likely to be a "here and there" sort of thing where we pop a few cases if we have any left, and we hope to eventually run out. With many of the earlier sets we took a "let's stock this forever" sort of approach that is not really feasible after 10 sets for a variety of reasons.

We'll also still sell promo minis and (I hope) other special stuff.

I appreciate that the policy change could be construed as a reduction in the value of a subscription, and I do apologize.

I either don't know or used to know and forgot. Sorry. I strongly suspect they have their original set markings and numbers, but I am not 100% certain.

We will find out together!

I can see where keeping extra minis around for years wouldn't be cost effective for Paizo, but 'two weeks after release' seems too short. It takes that long for me to just GET my subscription package... on a good month. That'd make it pretty difficult to wait to see what you got in your set and then order appropriate singles separately.

Thanks, Coyle! I really appreciate your support! I have to give WizKids the lion's share of the credit on the Iconic Heroes especially. They really outdid themselves with that project (and continue to do so).

It was also some of our earliest experiences with digital sculpting, and having been to the mountaintop I'm not sure I'd ever want to go back at this point. We're now using digital sculpts on the entire product line, and the amount of control it gives us to deliver amazing poses and detail still blows my mind.

The new Feiya shouldn't be all that difficult to find, honestly. There will be one in every brick.

I am not certain I fully understand your question, but I think that perhaps you are seeing the stand-alone curved "corner" pieces as part of the straight pieces. Maybe?

There is actually only one straight bar piece, repeated multiple times.

maybe you can accomondate this and stock the singles a month after the cases have been shipped? For a few weeks.

Going from 2 years (read that was the original target somewhere) to 2 weeks is pretty dramatic.

My current budget is about half a case in singles per set.
With LoG I got a case and tried to sell the left overs, but the stuff I don't want is pretty cheap even from retailers, so I'm stll sitting on 10 large ones. (20 if I count the ones I'm keeping but probbably never going to use at the table)

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber

What a great picture! I now see the need to get a second case incentive, Especially for the stools and extra table! My FLGS will be happy, I haven't been getting much from them lately. I'm not so disappointed about the singles not being sold long after the set is released, as the case distribution has been good enough that the individual pieces I need are few and far between. The secondary market will more than cover anything extra I might need.

This set rocks! I can only hope the next can live up to the standard set here!

Dark Archive

Now i can appreciate the rarity of the Dungeon dressing pieces better:

GOOD:

1. The Wagon is large and one of it per case is probably enough.
2. The Cart is something between medium and large and one of it will probably be enough too.

OK:

3. The Barrel seemes too little at one per case but in combination with the 2 barrels included with the Bar we got three - which is ok.

NOT ENOUGH:

4. The Table is one per case. Even with one additional table included with the bar it is not enough, already considering that some minis will favor the barfront.

OF VERY LIMITED USE:

5. The 2 crates included in a case are nice but you can´t do much with only two of em. You could use them as additional deco or tables in a bar though.
6. The Bed - while very nice - is so out of place on it´s own that you can only use it in a house with one bed chamber, which will only be the case in the smallest of houses.

Considering this, it would make the most sense to offer the latter as singles - or better yet as boxed sets.

But that is not the most important thing about this set and something i can live with.

If the faces of the human minis look good (which they seem to do) this is one of the most useful and beautiful sets you ever made, Eric.

Thanks again for your relentless work and great weekly previews (which have been on time very long in the last months - which is great).
I know you get paid for this but i can see you really put a lot of work and heartblood into it and i for one appreciate that very much.

I just noticed there is a Bunnyip in the Emerald Spire Dungeon.

Any plans on doing even more minis for that?
Dungeons Deep was already very Kickstarter friendly I thought.

The ghouls are a good stand in for Morlocks, so thanks for adding variety on that front too :-)

Erik,

The update states: "This image includes two complete case incentive sets, plus a lot of figures and some dungeon dressing from the full set. The final piece list for a single case incentive box is:

•3 Long Barfront Sections
•1 Corner Piece
•2 Bar Shelf Sections
•1 Table
•6 Bottles (2 sets of 3)
•2 Barrels
•1 Small Keg
•4 Stools"

I only see a total of four long barfront sections, yet if the single case incentive includes three long barfront sections and the image includes two complete case incentive sets, shouldn't we see a total of six long barfront sections in the image?

Would you please confirm if a single case incentive includes two or three long barfront sections? Thanks.

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

I noticed the same thing while writing my post, and plan to confirm with WizKids next week. The last communication I have from them says 3 Long Barfront Sections, but you're right that the picture suggests otherwise.

I _suspect_ that they didn't use two long bar sections to match the width of the four shelf sections, but that's just a guess.

I will let you guys know if we need to make a correction.

The bar looks amazing. I hope it will be a big success and lead to other sets such as a wizard's study, a temple, and a throne room.

Actually, there are five long sections for the bar. There is one going back from the left corner piece. Three per set seems right, in order to make a one by two "L" shaped bar.

Erik, thanks for confirming this. I would guess your assumption is correct, as adding two additional Long Barfront Sections would have extended it considerably beyond the four Bar Shelf Sections.

It looks really awesome, and I am anxiously awaiting the January release. Thanks again!

Erik,

You've got all the minis and the dungeon dressings for The Rusty Dragon Inn. Now you need to put on your schedule for next July (in time for GenCon) The Rusty Dragon Inn Flip-Mat. The main floor of the inn and surrounding buildings on one side. The other side is split between a) the bedrooms upstairs and b) the cellar with it's connection to caves and/or sewer system.

Edit: Unless the "Bigger Tavern" is in fact The Rusty Dragon Inn. Hard to say, they're no images of it yet.

Less happy with the singles change.

It means if I do order a case and want to get a couple extra figures depending on what the random draw doesn't give me enough of, I won't be able to buy from Paizo as the singles window will be closed by the time my case arrives. :('

(That and the timing of this set sucks. It's an awesome and desirable set that's releasing right at Christmas time. Ouch. My poor wallet...)

Dear Eric.

I have a question regarding the schedule of the next set following The Rusty Dragon Inn.

As this set is coming out on January 27th 2016
and only 3 weeks later (the actual release date is still subject to change but so far february 2016 stands and i don´t see Wizards of the Coast diverging from that) Wizkids is releasing their 4th D&D Icons set "Monster Menagerie" and i wonder when the next Pathfinder Battles set is scheduled.

Is this a decision Wizkids is making?
I would imagine so.
So far there has been a two to three month gap between Pathfinder Battles and D&D Icons miniature sets which is tight but barely manageable for me (for a lot of others it is probably too close to collect enough money for a case).

As i prefer the Pathfinder minis over the D&D ones in quality and every other aspect, i still feel the need for the other ones too.

Wizkids produces both lines which essentially cover common ground.
So it is simple economics that a close release of both lines leads to lower sales figures for both.

Could you inquire or shed some light into this matter?
As you are probably not privy to all of these informations any little tidbits would be much appreciated.

On another matter concerning Pathfinder Battles miniatures:

Are there yet any other boxed sets aside from Iconic Heroes 5 and 6 planed to be released in 2016?

I understand completely if you can´t or won´t answer these things right now but i thought i´d ask anyway.

Looking forward to anything you publish.

Yours faithfully Marco Massoudi

PS: Congratulations on the 10th minis set (RotR in january 2012 to TRDI in january 2016) in only 4 years! Here´s to the next 10 sets!

I usually get a couple of cases, so I'm normally good about the amount of minis I have, with maybe some of the rares.

My question is, when do cases begin shipping for subscribers in relation to the release date?

Shouldn't you keep the option to purchase singles up at least couple of weeks after the longest projected time a subscriber should receive their shipment?

What I think I will do if I don't have my cases yet is just buy the more rare miniatures that I will want multiples of, and maybe some of the uncommon ones. Like most of the dungeon dressings, and maybe the horses.

So what is normally the allotment for uncommons in a case now? Meaning, how many of one uncommon do we usually see in a case?

Good point. I subscribe to just about everything, and to avoid spending too much on shipping, I have everything shipped once/month "with [my] subscription." But a lot of times that means I get stuff at the end of the month when it comes out. So there might be times when I won't get my case of minis for a couple of weeks after street date. I ALWAYS buy more singles to round out minis I like and want larger groups of, but if the window is only a couple of weeks, I'll be out of luck.

I get the basic point of not endlessly opening boxes and restocking singles, and I hope Eric's comment about singles only lasting for 2 weeks is really more of a "we don't know yet how long they'll last, but it will probably be weeks rather than months." [EDIT: looking back, I don't actually see Eric saying that, someone else did.]

You got the last 2 numbers wrong.

The booster with King Irovetti and Feiya will contain 6 and not 8 minis

Also a brick consists of 8 boosters and not 4. ;-)

And while i am at it there is a wizkids product page about the MONSTER MENAGERIE Gargantuan Treant online.

Thx for the great page!
