New Recruits, New Achievements!

Monday, November 2, 2015

Over the past 8 years, Pathfinder Society Organized Play has grown into a worldwide community. The phenomenal growth is testament to the hard work and support put in at all levels of the campaign. In fact, it's grown so large that I am adding two more categories of volunteers: Regional Venture-Coordinators (RVC) and Venture Agents (VA). These two new tiers serve to facilitate communication across the globe, and recognize the individuals who support Pathfinder Society with their efforts coordinating games.

Regional Venture-Coordinators, under the guidance of the Organized Play Coordinator, supervise a large section of the world, and will support Venture-Captains and Venture-Lieutenants in their duties. The other new rank, Venture-Agent, is responsible for organizing regularly scheduled activities at a specific venue, and will report to the Venture-Captains or Lieutenants of the area where the location is located.

If you are interested in volunteering for Pathfinder Society Organized Play, we are continually recruiting! Check this page to see more information on requirements and how to apply (this page has been updated today to outline all of the new duties of each volunteer category).

Without further ado, let me introduce the new Regional Venture-Coordinators!

Art Lobdell—RVC Northeast
Art started in the Pathfinder Society at Gen Con 2007. From there, he immediately began organizing conventions and spread PFS to the greater NY area - Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. After being appointed VC in October 2010, he concentrated on recruiting VCs from Maine to Washington, D.C., leaving him to focus on New York City and surrounding areas. Art received the 5th Campaign Coin, making him Pathfinder Society #705, at Origins. Says Art, "I ran Midnight Mauler as a special so many times I have run it from memory 3 times or more."
Dan Simons—RVC Mid-Atlantic
Dan started playing PFS at Gen Con 2009 and then in the local Pathfinder Society group in Washington, DC. He became the first Venture-Captain of the greater Washington, DC/Northern Virginia/Southern Maryland area in October 2011. When he moved near Baltimore, MD in 2012, he was appointed as the first Venture-Captain for that region. In less than a year, he moved back down to Alexandria, VA and became the VC of Washington, DC again, a post he has held for the past 2.5 years. Dan was awarded my Campaign Coin at PaizoCon 2015, and has attended numerous Gen Cons and PaizoCons, as well as PaizoCon UK in 2014.
Del Collins—RVC Southeast
Del joined the ranks of Venture-Captain in October 2011. His region stretched from South Carolina, through Eastern Georgia, Eastern Tennessee, Central/Western North Carolina. Over the years, Del trained many GMs and convention organizers. He supports Pathfinder Society at Gen Con with vans full of volunteers. He received his Campaign Coin and became Pathfinder # 722.
Bob Jonquet—RVC Great Lakes
Bob joined the Pathfinder Society during its initial stages when all we had was a Beta rule set and roughly half a dozen tables at GenCon. He was instrumental in the early growth of the Chicagoland area received a promotion to Venture-Captain in April of 2011. He has since relocated to Central Illinois, where he continues to promote local play, organize regional events, and mentor new Venture-Officers. Bob is one of the original five-star GMs, and has been invaluable in helping to organize some of our largest events including PaizoCon and GenCon. He was awarded a Campaign Service Coin in 2014.
Jason Roeder—RVC Midwest
Jason became a Venture-Captain in January of 2011, and received my fifth star in June 2011. He was the Pathfinder Society's second five star GM, narrowly beating Kyle Baird to it! He received a Campaign Service Coin on August 1st, 2015. In describing himself, Jason writes, "I am a guy that just really likes games. My favorite happens to be Pathfinder, so I play it a lot". You may have seen him at conventions—he's the overweight guy with a beard. If you walk up to him at any time, ever (even if you catch him at work) and ask him to play a scenario, he will drop whatever he is doing to join in. Jason enjoys movies, long walks on the beach, and terrifying players by running whatever monstrosity Richard Pett has authored recently.
Todd Morgan—RVC Northwest
Todd is familiar to PaizoCon attendees as the man in charge. He became a Venture-Captain in 2011. Moving from Iowa to Nebraska, he continued to support Pathfinder Society. His hard work and dedication to the Pathfinder Society was recognized at Gen Con 2014, where he received a Campaign Coin at Gen Con 2014. The past two years, he has been co-lead of Gen Con. Todd is full of tales and is happy to share them over a beer or two.
Eric Brittain—RVC Southwest
Eric became a Venture-Captain with the first set of 13 back in October 2010. At PaizoCon 2011, he was voted best GM at the Grand Melee. Eric also contributed to the Grand Melee by writing two of the encounters for this event. At PaizoCon 2013 Eric was awarded my campaign service award, becoming Pathfinder Society #707. Says Eric, "This is very appropriate because upside down it spells out LOL." Most recently, Eric's activities include being the Venture-Captain of San Diego, playing 6 home games and 1 play by post game all using the Pathfinder rule set.
Auke Teeninga—RVC AEE (Africa-Eastern Eurasia)
Auke played his first PFS games at GenCon UK 2008 and after two years of flying to foreign conventions to play the game, he decided to set up local play in the Netherlands in 2010. It could be coincidence, but a month after his request for support, the Venture Captain program was announced. He was appointed one of the first thirteen Venture Captains and has made it a habit to meet up with other Pathfinder players from all across the globe. So if you are ever in the Netherlands, send him an email and he'll try to set up a game for you!
Dave Harrison—RVC WEME (Western Eurasia-Middle East)
Dave is a Welshman, not an Englishman, who started GMing Pathfinder Society games when Organized Play was set up in 2008. He convinced enough people to help him create PaizoCon UK in 2009 and it has grown into an international convention. He was selected to be one of the original 13 Venture-Captains in October 2010. As a UK Venture Captain, he has brought Pathfinder Society gaming to various events and encouraged others to take up venture officer roles for England, Scotland and Ireland. Paizo, Inc. recognized Dave as a Volunteer of the Year 2013-14. He continues to GM Pathfinder as often as possible at conventions and also enjoys terrifying GMs by signing up at the last minute to play Pathfinder Society games.
Stephen White—RVC Asia-Pacific
Stephen is a proud gaymer involved with RPGs since the early 80s. I first GMed Pathfinder at Free RPG Day in June 2007, and started supporting Pathfinder Society in Season 0 as he traveled Melbourne's con circuit. He GMed at GenConOz the year Jason Bulmahn visited Brisbane to launch the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook and when GenConOz cancelled the following year at short notice, I co-organized the first PaizoConOz with Venture-Captain-Sydney Al Rigg. Stephen is one of the 13 original Venture-Captains appointed in October 2010, one of the earliest 5-Star GMs, and in March 2013 became the third recipient of the Campaign Service Coin. Stephen jokes, "Many local players joke that I had been demoted from VC Australia to VC Melbourne with the appointment of VCs in other States, but under their capable stewardship, you'd be unlucky to visit an Australian city and not find somewhere you could enjoy a game of PFS. In the meantime, I believe I've once again inherited the largest geographic PFS region with the inclusion of New Zealand, Singapore, India, East Asia and Hawaii. I'm looking forward to working with VCs in the Asia-Pacific Region, and will of course be campaigning tirelessly for more PFS excursions into Tian Xia, Vudra and... Sarusan!"

I would also like to recognize the GMs that have earned their 5th star since Gen Con 2015. To qualify as a 5-Star GM, you have to run 150 games, including 10 specials and 50 different scenarios, and run a game observed by a Venture-Officer. It takes many hours to achieve and shows dedication to Pathfinder Society Organized Play. Many congratulations to the following GMs!

This actually brings up something I was thinking about before.

The web page says contact the PFS email address. Should prospective VAs be contacting Paizo directly? or should they be contacting their VLs? Or something in between? (I did both, but I thought I should throw this out there for other people.)

It seems silly to compartmentalize management, and then send all the VA requests past 3 levels of authority to Tonya. Especially when we are probably mostly going to be working under the direction of the VL/VC

Contact your regions RVC and talk to them about being promoted. Depending on what you are doing in the area, you might be eligible for VA, VL, or even VC.

Basically what this comes down to is if youve got someone locally (VC/VL) talk to them. If you dont, talk to your RVC. :)

Heh. Wanna tell me if my area has either one at present?

Las Vegas, NV.

There is a VC for North Las Vegas, but the VC for Las Vegas said Las Vegas previously. No VLs in the Greater Las Vegas area, closest one is in the Reno area, so under that area's VC...

Contact the closest VC, in your case North LV, if you are interested. Areas are being redistributed and titles cleaned up as a result of the reorganization, but that may take a bit of time.

I hear/see this come up a lot. "Local" can mean a lot of different things. If you do not have what you would consider a "local" VO, then check the coordinators roster for the next closest one in your region. If that doesn't work, you can always reach out to the RVC. They should be able to answer your question or direct you to the appropriate VC/VL.

Without being too pushy (I hope) can you give an order of magnitude for "a bit of time" (a few weeks, a few months, etc.) I get the feeling some things local to me are waiting on the reorganization, and I would like to get a feeling for how long I should wait before I go bug gently remind people about things.

Its not about bureaucracy, its about (1) alleviating the huge influx of communication directed at the OPC and (2) creating a structure where the most experienced Venture-Officers can better mentor newer volunteers. With over 500 Venture-Officers, direct contact with the CC/OPC is becoming quite a challenge to maintain and the RVCs will help by vetting a lot of the communication traffic that has until now been falling on the OPC to address. We will have the opportunity to answer questions and help resolve issues that arise leaving Tonya more available to tackle community-wide initiatives. The regions put us in direct, regular contact with the Venture-leaders of the various areas creating a more defined support structure that can help with all manner of logistical and organizational needs.

should have seen that coming. keep up the GREAT work and thanks for all you have and will do.

You know, being in software, every time I hear "reorg" my spine tingles just a bit...

(I think this is good actually; if the OPC has trouble doing "big picture" things because they're bogged down with day to day stuff, it's a huge issue)

Ontario is having a small issue in which our VC/VL was recently recruited away to a much more prestigious role, so now we are just waiting for Tonya to back fill her previous role here in Ontario.

We do have a VC in the Ottawa region, but Canada is really really big and our population centres are more like islands in an archipelago. But when compared to other archipelagos we have say 1/2 the population of the UK and 38 times the area. So having a local VC means some where within your population island, and so for the moment we don't have one. (This isn't even a complaint, because Canadians don't complain... no wait we actually do, but we are very used to this regional nature, because it informs more than just gaming, it impacts pretty much the all services, government, infrastructure, and Canadian humour.)

I hope not! There were be way too few people able to run them. I don't want to be begged to run 6 star stuff. :p

Oooo, a +7 on a reroll. That's going to leave a mark.

So does Tonya get a +8?

On a more serious note, I'd like to suggest a change to who can run exclusive scenarios. That would be "If you're allowed to run an exclusive once, you can run it anytime." I'm a long time PFSer. I only get to GM and play occasionally so after seven years in PFS I've only earned two stars, and I only have four PCs. I've been a Tier 2 GM at GenCon the past 4 or 5 years. At GenCon I've run several of the "exclusive" scenarios, but now I can't. (Yes I knew that going in, this is not a rant, just a suggestion). A regional convention is offering both of the exclusives 6-98 and 6-99, but don't have enough GMs to run all the slots they are offered in. So I've got three exclusive scenarios sitting in my downloads that I have prepared and run at GenCon and there is a GM need that I can do, but I'm not allowed to.

I don't think it would make a big impact on PFS if any GM who ran an exclusive at PaizoCon or GenCon would be allowed to run them in the future. We're talking about 100 or so GMs out of a 60,000+ player base.

Anyway, Just My Thoughts.

Note the specific wording of the Reward:

"Treated as 2 stars higher for qualification to run Exclusive events."

Therefore, no additional bonus on re-rolls than you already receive.

As a GM I enjoy using that joke, but even it were legal, I don't think I would ever want to use a reroll for an enemy except to reroll a killing crit so it wasn't. I don't play soft, but I'm also don't believe in the sacrifice to the blood god GM approach.

After 2015's marathon weekend session to start the Rise of the Runelords AP, I'm thinking what I will do for 2016. Can anyone confirm if a Venture Agent will count as a Venture Officer for running Specials like Bonekeep, etc?

And after listening to Jessica Price on Know Direction interview from last week, I'm putting Tonya Woldridge and John Compton in the text of my post as that is, apparently, the best way to attract the attention of a particular Paizonian :-)

Apologies if that was a trade secret......

Venture Agents are officers, however do not have the star bonus as part of their VO reward package. So a VA would still need to have the required stars to run said exclusive

I'm not so sure about that Thea. The older exclusives (pre-Kobolds/Aspis) could be run by VCs & VLs regardless of stars. I'm fairly certain the Bonekeeps are still that way so it might be possible for VAs to run them regardless of stars. They have said that VAs are VOs too. It's a good question that should probably be answered by Tonya, Linda, or John.

Appearing now :D

Summoning spell just took a few months. o.O

If the special is limited to a Venture-Officer, then a Venture-Agent qualifies.

If the special is limited baed on stars, then Venture-Agents qualify if they are that star level.

Here is the updated list, since the Bonekeep changes:

These scenarios can be run by any 4-star or 5-star GM or a Venture-Officer at any time. They also can be run by anybody at a convention where all Bonekeeps are approved to be scheduled:
Bonekeep Level 1: The Silent Grave (Levels 3-7)
Bonekeep Level 2: Maze to the Mind Slave (Levels 3-7)
Bonekeep Level 3: The Wakening Tomb (Levels 5-9)

These scenario can be run anywhere but only by 4-star and 5-star GMs (and ONLY them...Venture-Officers only can run it if they meet this requirement. VCs get a +2 and VLs a +1 to their star rating to run):
#6-98: Serpent's Rise (Levels 7 Special Pregens Only)

This scenario can be run anywhere but only by 5-star GMs (and ONLY them...Venture-Officers only can run it if they meet this requirement. VCs get a +2 and VLs a +1 to their star rating to run):
#6-99: True Dragons of Absalom (Level 4 Special Pregens Only)

These scenarios can be run anywhere, but only if there are enough tables put together that are playing the scenario simultaneously. These are categorized by how many tables they need to be run:
3 tables
#2-SP: Year of the Shadow Lodge (Levels 1-11)
4 tables
#4-SP: Race for the Runecarved Key (Levels - All)
5 tables
#3-SP: Blood Under Absalom (Levels 1-11)
#5-SP: Siege of the Diamond City (Levels 1-15)
#6-00: Legacy of the Stonelords (Levels 1-11)
#6-97: Siege of Serpents (Levels 1-11)
#7-00: The Sky Key Solution (Levels 1-11)

Note: For purposes of how many tables ran for the special, you can have both Standard and Core tables add together. For example, if you had 3 Standard tables and 1 Core table for Race for the Runecarved Key, that would qualify as the 4 total tables you need to run the scenario.

Can't you run Bone Keep stuff? Haven't the restrictions on those games been lifted (used to have to be run at conventions with a minimum number of tables)?

Edit: Just checked the statuses of Bonekeep adventures. Neither is "available" to purchase, so should be restricted to 4-stars in their downloads. I think part 3 still has the "convention minimum" but the others are okay to be run at local game events.

'nother Edit: I can't find the star restriction note on those, but I am 100% that they count as "specials" for gaining your 5th star. While I can't find a post to link, I fully remember reading that on a list of what specials you can run.

Everything on the list is considered a "special" for purpose of obtaining stars.

Jeez...I didn't even go up-thread more than the one post. Embarrassing...

Not as embarrassing as my spelling failure...

Thanks for the list Tonya.

Just a question, 7-00 The Sky Solution is currently unavailable to me but we do plan on running 5 tables for it when we reach that point in January. Is there a special condition that I am missing in order to purchase it? I would rather be prepared with it than to reach our planned session without it. Thanks

Can't you run Bone Keep stuff? Haven't the restrictions on those games been lifted (used to have to be run at conventions with a minimum number of tables)?

It's more the tyranny of the local area - we have a smaller community and the GM's on the quest before me did a pretty amazing job of saturating BK1-3 ahead of me, so finding a full table of 'whats a Bonekeep' is a rare beast. That sort of left the multi-tables and Serpents Rise.

As it is I have relented and am organising a bunch of the multi-table specials.
This is more complex than it seems as the joyous geography of Australia means we are spread out over large distances so the main tables will be in one location and the others around us in via skype etc. The physical distance covered between the tables (furthest to furthest) is 745 miles.

The 10 'specials' requirement is really quite problematic. You only have 4 scenarios to play with, every GM is looking to run the same scenarios, and saturation is an issue.

Necro apologies;

Any word on what the GM-star or con-only requirements are for #7-98 Serpents' Ire and #7-90 Through Maelstrom Rift?

I know it must be posted somewhere in the blog or something, but my google-fu is failing me...

I think you are looking for this;

Go to OPC Log—20 Rova 4716

Shadow Lodge 4/5

Bonekeep levels 1 and 2 show in my downloads, but not Bonekeep level 3. Is there a reason for that? Am I missing something in the requirements as a VA?

Starfinder Superscriber

I have the same thing; as a 4-star GM, I thought I could run all three, but BK 3 isn't in my downloads. I'm guessing that the system that adds downloads hasn't adapted to BK 3 no longer being convention-only for 4-star and higher GMs.

Many of the multi-table specials are granting only, not purchase. They are valid for con support request, so add them to the GM scenario drop request.

@rknop - I think you have the right of it. I will chat with our Digital Asset Director and see if we can get the autogrant permissions updated. Until then, send me an email and I will add them to accounts.
