It's a Fight to the Finish!

Bestiary 5 is creeping, crawling, slithering, and sneaking its way to you soon—it's time for some previews! But we're gonna shake things up a bit, and give you the opportunity to choose what you want to see, not to mention a chance to win a signed copy of Bestiary 5 when it releases!

If any of you have been to PaizoCon and had a chance to play "Green Blood on a Black Rock", you'll have a great idea of what to expect in this elimination-style event. All of these creatures are brand new, unseen in any of our other books—but this time, we're leaving the choice of which ones you'll get the details on to you! As each round progresses, we'll reveal more information, starting with their name and a full picture.

With that out of the way, let's get ready to rumble, and meet our contestants!

Aberration vs. Monstrous Humanoid, Animal vs. Plant

Our Aberration would love to sit down and think about deep, meaningful topics with you, and our Monstrous Humanoid would love to have a long shuffle on the ocean beach, and it's flora and fauna puttin' up their dukes, and who's gonna win this one: small and fierce, or cute and cuddly?

Construct vs. Outsider A, Dragon vs. Outsider B

Will this crafted being be able to conquer a creature formed from the very fabric of existence, and this is no ordinary Dragon that the Outsider will be facing—but this Outsider has powers at its command that even dragons should fear!

Fey vs. Undead, Humanoid vs. Outsider C

Clearly our Fey might just like to have a good time—will they set the glass down long enough to face against this ferocious four-legged Undead? Mortal pit against immortal: who will win? The candle that burns twice as bright, but half as long, or the embodiment of endless and immutable forces?

Magical Beast A vs. Magical Beast B, Ooze vs. Vermin

We're pitting these two Magical Beasts against each other—time to see who really can conquer mind over matter! I'm pretty sure if you dipped our Vermin in the Ooze, it might make a tasty tempura treat...but I don't think they'd like that much!

What are you waiting for? Place your bets in the voting booth and give yourself a chance to win a signed copy of Bestiary 5—as well as a chance to receive one of four Bestiary 5 PDFs! The first round of voting closes at 12:00 PM Pacific time on October 28, 2015, and remember, each round will give you more chances to win!

I'm not sure why people are surprised snake-person is humanoid, merfolk are humanoid.

D'oh. We realized after seeing this comment how vague it is. Liz is currently editing the blog to reflect this, but after some discussion, we've actually revised our prize structure to expand to more than one winner. At the end of the fourth round, a winner will be selected to win the signed copy of Bestiary 5. In addition, we will be selecting four voters to receive a PDF copy of Bestiary 5 at that time.

Winners are determined randomly, though if you vote in multiple/all rounds, you have more chances of being selected.

You have no idea how tempting it was to put a starburst behind each of these silhouettes.

Liking your own post? For shame!

But I'll forgive you if you go back and add it.

In category four it says two magical beast for the first two but when you place the mouse's arrow on the second one it says outsider.

The animal is a red panda, which we've seen an image of for.

And the undead kinda reminds me of a dracolich. Some undead dragon anyway.
Where have we seen the image.

It was in the 2015 Pathfinder Catalog under the Bestiary 5 section.

So, essentially the votes are not anonymous. Every time you vote, your username is present?

Even though many people will have voted by round 4, and I'll have a very small chance of winning, this makes me even more excited. :)

Because you need to be signed into paizo.com to vote, your votes are not technically anonymous. However, our method for determining the winner is still randomized and the Community Team won't be able to see names/user identifying information when selections are made. The end result is fairly similar to how we handle the PaizoCon lottery, to keep the contest fair.

I suspect part of my problem is my never having been able too go to PaizoCon, so I don't know what "Green Blood on a Black Rock" is.

It's actually based on an in-world event. It's also a PaizoCon event that Adam Daigle has run for several years now.

The Red Panda art is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Green Blood on a Black Rock is a monster fighting tournament that takes place in the Sodden Lands. I've been running it as an event at PaizoCon for the past 6 years with my good friend Brandon Hodge. (Michael Kortes came up with the concept and ran it at PaizoCon 2009 for the first time.) Here's probably the best write up of the event I could find on the messageboards, though one of the players last year did a great play by play on Facebook last year complete with pictures for each battle.

This contest is similar in that it's a tournament that pits monsters against each other.

Thanks, i see it and some monsters, they looks awesome.

Unfettered Phantom, TOTALLY CALLED IT! :D

Yes, that does match the art for the red panda in the 2015 catalog.

I don't wanna be rude, but the ooze creature is old artwork re-used as it was made for Bestiary 4, but appears in Bestiary 5, I use this picture a year already for my Black Tamanous idea, its all over Deviantart. It is called the Black Oil. :-p

So that preview is an easy one for me personally, Same with the Red Panda which is in the guide.

Ok, i'll choose:

Thought Eater VS Deep One = Thought Eater is my pick. (but if this is shellycoat afteral, then i'm on team shellycoat, but as shellycoat is too good to be true, i'm going with the Lovecraft thing which I don't like because it's too much like the Skum.)

Red Panda VS Lotus Leshy = Lotus Leshy by FAR, but i'm sure everyone wants to see the normal discovery animal for some strange bizarre reasons, even though we already seen the art in the preview.

Robot VS Female Outsider = Female Outsider by far, but Robot will win anyway, i'm sure team-talking bag will use all their accounts to vote for that one lol! It this outsider turns out to be a Aeon, then i'm skipping this round.

Nightmare Dragon VS Kyton = Nightmare Dragon is my pick, but this is a hard one, can't wait for this reveal, as I'm in love with both silliouettes!

Clurichaun VS Another Bone Dragon = Hopefully Clurichaun will win. (if this bone dragon is responsible for the birth of the Udaeus however, i'll go with the Ismenian Dragon, as I wished for a skeleton ismenian dragon, but I also wished for Clurichaun.)

Campe VS Another-Female-With-Wings = Campe will hopefully win :-p BUT BUT BUT if this turns out to be an Empusa, that will make up for it, any angel or other devil with wings however goes to the she-serpent, Nure-Onna or Campe or whatever it will be.

Brain Mole VS HOPEFULLY LAVELLAN PLEASE! (or otherwise some mythological Squirrel monster like Ratatoskr or Muscaliet) = Lavellan will win in my book, but i'm also curious at the Brain Mole, this will be my favorite battle, love them both!

Black Oil VS Giant Mantis Schrimp (please don't be a regular mantis shrimp) - Giant Mantis Schrimp will win, as i've already seen the Black Oil, but not its stats, so if its a regular mantis shrimp of tiny size, then i'm all for the ooze, but if its a dire/giant mantis shrimp i'm for the shrimp.

The previewed artwork is... well not really my thing, already seen the devil on chair, another humanoid ghost and another female with wings.

I'm still sure this book will rule, as I love many of the sillioettes.

Magical Beast B is really there to torture me.

It looks so much like some sick rat mutant, with all the warts and stuff going on, really suits my perfect Lavellan (the most poisonous creature from myth). I hope it doesn't have two heads though, as the picture kinda looks like it has two heads, but there are already many creatures with two heads.

Looking at it close... I think it may have one or more creatures riding it. That's what the silhouette suggests to my eyes, anyway.

could Magical Beast B be the Succarath?

- The tail matches
- The babies riding it matches
- The legs match a bit
- One of the babies has a long FROG tongue, which matches!

The only thing i'm not really 100% sure about it it's head, but I'm probably seeing that wrong.

I'm 90% sure its the Succarath, but these babies riding it will probably be very vile and hungry, turning this creature into a cool paizonized myth creature.

I can always hope!

The fey has a beer in his hands, that must be the alchol-addicted Clurichaun, but its head doesn't seem to wear a hat... I'm hoping it won't be a male version of the Maenad called a Bacchae or some Dionysus-lover. But the animals that rest at its feet make me doubt its a clurichaun, because clurichaun never had anything to do with animals...

I'm also on the team who doesn't understand why the Serpent-Lady is a humanoid and not a monstrous humanoid, it this creature based on Dragon78 wish of a centaur-like playable race? If that is Kampe or Nure-Onna i'm hoping it won't be a playable race.

Silver Crusade

That Heresy Devil looks so happy :3

Outsider B is growing out of all types of flowers, vines and plants?

That makes me curious!

Black Oil ooze, well that makes the tempura joke with the shrimp make more sense.

I really hope there are more dark leshies in this book, not only cute ones like in Bestiary 3, the Fungus Leshy was by far my favorite. Hope Cactus, Venusflytrap and Rose Leshy (if they are in) have darker more serieus artwork.

I also like to see the bone-type dragon, as I was never a fan of the template Ravener, I hope this is a normal creature and not a template, but I think it is as two template skeleton dragons is a bit overkill. So I hope I like this skeleton dragon more! It's silliouette looks awesome!

Just voted. My anticipation for this book grows worse by the day. Especially now that Im working on a setting that I might try to publish.

As much as we'd probably accomplish by becoming a hybrid gninja-megazord, Liz and I are still two people. Alas.

can't wait to see the new monster in the 5th bestiary

Speaking of fusing together I hope there will a monster or two that can fuse together to create a more powerful creature/being.

Yeah, we need more creatures like Lantern Archons that can Voltron together.

At least one creature in B5 can do that. Will it be one of these 16? I guess we'll have to wait to see what tricks they pull out during the upcoming battle royale!

Cool, there will be at least one.

So I take it no one cares about my findings on the black oil ooze and succarath? Or are ya'll just jealous on my sharp eyes and google skills? Ha! :-p

In the mythological/fantasy/SF world, plants eat simple, small, red animals. :-D

And if I wanna see artwork of the Red Panda, i'll google it, Lotus Leshy is a different story, hard to find when there is none to find yet.

And do we only get to see the Artwork or also the stats?

If the Red Panda turns out to be a dire variant, i'm still on team Leshy but Dire Red Panda is cool too.

I hope the fusion-monster is some type of twin-creature that can merge together to become bigger.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the oil ooze actually.

Uhm it matches the picture 100% and the guy who drawn it called it Black Oil.

Yes, but sometimes you order the art for black oil and then you change your mind and it becomes dark robot pudding in the final book, you know.

ROBOT pudding.

WITH LAZORS.

It would be nice if the undead dragon is not a template.

Oozes can always fuse. Hope it isnt an ooze.
