Society Unchained

Monday, April 27, 2015

Ever since its announcement nearly a year ago, players and GMs alike have been speculating about what would appear in Pathfinder Unchained. It was only a short step from there to start wondering what would appear in Pathfinder Society Organized Play. We started exploring this same question early in the book's production, and even then it was clear that some sections would not be a good fit for the campaign, others would absolutely play a role, and many others would require closer study. With the generous assistance of the Pathfinder Design Team and numerous volunteers, we were able to weigh the pros and cons and finalize what our Pathfinders might see in the field.

We'll start by discussing some of the sub-systems that likely come as no surprise to anyone, largely because they would require massive character rebuilds, severely impact how the game works for someone who just has the Core Rulebook, or require us to scrap the current XP system. Much of Chapter 3 (Gameplay) falls into this category; removing alignment, ditching iterative attacks, altering poison, heavy revising action economy, and introducing wound thresholds would invalidate considerable chunks of existing scenarios and possibly wreck how many of our existing characters function. Other features reference gameplay elements that simply don't appear in the organized play campaign, so dynamic item creation, alternate profession rules, fractional base bonuses, and staggered advancement are not a good fit. As intriguing as the many new skill options look, imposing consolidated skills, grouped skills, or background skills would just be too disruptive for a campaign in its seventh year. The same is true for many of the magic systems, including simplified spellcasting, spell alterations, automatic bonus progressions, and innate item bonuses.

Several other systems were not so cut and dry. We discussed the stamina pool system for quite a while before deciding not to include it; it is an extensive section that we may revisit in the future, but at this time it is not available in the campaign. We came to a similar conclusion for variant multiclassing. We are adding the Signature Skill feat for exclusive use by the unchained rogue—which I suppose spoils a later surprise. John is very excited to include esoteric components and scaling items on a few Chronicle sheets, but these items are not available for purchase otherwise.

Still, we imagine Chapter 1 (Classes) is the topic everyone is waiting for, and we have seen many of you making fairly accurate predictions. All four Pathfinder Unchained classes—barbarian, monk, rogue, and summoner—will be legal for use in Pathfinder Society Organized Play. The unchained barbarian, monk, and rogue are available in addition to the versions that appear in the Core Rulebook; as noted on page 8 of Pathfinder Unchained, "These classes can be used alongside their original counterparts (although individual characters must use one version or the other exclusively)."

In fact, we're so excited about these classes that we're announcing a one-time limited rebuild to anyone with one or more levels in these classes, allowing those characters to switch any levels in the four classes to their unchained version at no cost. This includes the automatic retraining of any rage powers or rogue talents, as well as the free retraining and selling at full cost of any feats, items, and other character options that no long function properly due to the unchained classes features. For example, a rogue automatically gains the ability to add her Dexterity bonus to damage, so she could sell back her +1 agile rapier at full price. Likewise, a barbarian with the Raging Vitality feat would no longer benefit from its increased Constitution bonus, so she could retrain that feat for free. Much like when we have offered free faction changes in the past, you'll need to take advantage of this opportunity before you play the character after April 29, 2015.

You may notice that we did not say the unchained summoner would be available alongside its Advanced Player's Guide counterpart. Effective immediately, the Advanced Player's Guide summoner is no longer available in the organized play campaign, and the unchained summoner is its legal replacement. However, we recognize that someone who already has a summoner (and the book to play it) should not be punished for this change. Therefore, if you have a character with levels in the summoner class, and you have played the character at least once at level 2 or higher, you get to keep your summoner as is; you may also continue to gain levels in the summoner class. Any character gaining a level in summoner for the first time must use the unchained summoner, and anyone character still within the 1st-level window of free rebuilding must also use the unchained summoner.

As a final note, we want to advise folks about archetype and other features' compatibility for the unchained classes for the organized play campaign.

  • The unchained barbarian qualifies for any archetype that does not modify how the rage class feature operates (such as the urban barbarian archetype), and she is limited to any barbarian rage power that appears in Chapter 1 (including the rage powers on page 13)
  • The unchained monk does not qualify for any archetypes, save those in future publications that specifically cite their compatibility with the unchained monk class.
  • The unchained rogue qualifies for all existing rogue archetypes, but she is limited to any rogue talents listed in Chapter 1 (including the sidebar on page 24).
  • The unchained summoner qualifies for all existing summoner archetypes, save those that modify the eidolon's type or base form.

The Unchained Barbarian can only select rage powers from this book, roger. Can the chained Barbarian select Unchained rage powers?

Questions:
I have a character with 11 levels of Cleric and 1 level of Barbarian, does this mean that I can do a full rebuild?
Do I have to have levels of Barbarian after the rebuild?
I have a boon that gives me a third trait on the character, can I change that trait?

Thanks for the answers

(No I did not read the whole thread too long).

2. Yep. See above.

3. Does that trait function properly after the rebuild?

1. You can only update your one level of Barbarian to the Unchained Barbarian.

2. Yes, specifically the Unchained Barbarian.
3. Unless it is specific to the Barbarian class, I do not think so.

One request as a summoner lover. I get the feeling the stigma the class has had extended to some extent to the designers and editors. I don't have proof. It's just things like not seeing am npc summoner since season two and the speed of the transition.

What I am asking is some "rehabilitation" for the class in pfs adventures. Make a summoner eidilon combo important npcs in some adventures. Maybe have a Summoner venture captain with an eidilon sitting in on the briefings. Basically, please try to make the class a bit more part of the world.

Thanks in advance,

There were also art issues with an Eidilon as well. An really was pretty formless thus fairly hard to draw because you had no idea what they looked like. The new Eidilons are much easier to come up with a good drawing idea because they have a type. I also hope we see more summoners now.

Hmm... I'm wondering something about the equipment "rebuild". It says we can sell back equipment at full cost, but what if we just want to switch an enhancement. I've got a +1 agile adamantine sawback dagger on my rogue, but I also made it a Smine weapon. I made it agile after I payed the PP to make it Smine. Can I just make it say keen instead of agile, or would I be either stuck with it as is or have to sell it back and not be able to replace it as a Smine?

If I created an Unchained Rogue character and then picked up levels in a class which also grants Rogue Talents (such as Shadowdancer, Investigator, or Archeologist Bard) would I select those Talents from the Unchained list or from the old list?

Since you buy weapons upgrades/enhancements piecemeal in PFS, couldn't you just sell back the Agile enhancement and buy the Keen enhancement?

You sell the weapon at full value and rebuy it as you want.

If you've applied some boons or one-shot, boon-like modifications to the gear, just apply those to whatever the replacement is. The free rebuild process is intended to facilitate trying something new without sacrificing earned benefits.

How will this affect classes that relied on the abilities that have been moved back to later levels and what are the solutions, specifically the champion of Irori that required still mind to qualify for? I am asking because I am looking into changing but already have already taken lvls into the prestige class.

I'd like to know that as well. So far questions on this issue have gone unanswered.

The sentence quoted in this blog post - "These classes can be used alongside their original counterparts (although individual characters must use one version or the other exclusively)" suggests to me that any Rogue Talents gained by an individual character must come from the same list regardless of the class granting them. If that is true then the answer to my question would either be...

1.) An Unchained Rogue who takes levels in Shadowdancer, etc. still selects Rogue Talents from the Unchained list. This option would make dipping Unchained Rogue before taking levels in Investigator a way around any rules limiting Investigators, etc. to the old list.

or

2.) Unchained Rogues can't take levels in Archeologist Bard, etc. in the same way that they can't take levels in the CRB Rogue. This would be a little strange, but there are some similar issues with sorcerer bloodlines and Dragon Disciple.

Then we have to figure out how things work if you start in Investigator, etc. and then take Rogue levels.

All of this would probably be much clearer if we had the answer to your question.

While I certainly am glad about the free retraining, I find myself a bit disappointed as to the timing requirements; it seems to me to be unfairly harsh to players who do not immediately buy the book.

Quote:
Much like when we have offered free faction changes in the past, you'll need to take advantage of this opportunity before you play the character after April 29, 2015.

By my reading, that means if you play a character with levels of the "chained" classes on or after April 30th (tomorrow), you won't be able to take advantage of the free rebuild afterwards. That means players who have these characters (and would like to take advantage of the free rebuild) have to either buy the book immediately or actively avoid playing these characters until they are able to buy said book.

I mean, I picked up a copy at my FLGS yesterday, but I know several of my players who have characters with levels in these classes, some of which I don't think can afford to buy this book immediately. I respectfully request that this offer be extended for the remainder of season six, or clarification that the wording isn't meant to establish the next time they play the character as a deadline (it could potentially be read as "you can do it any time after this date, but not while playing").

James: Basically, their choice, if they cannot afford Unchained, is to either live with the PC as is, or not play the PC until they can pick up (or get gifted) a copy of Unchained.

Unlike a faction change, this is a free rebuild, subject to the book being available. Not purchased, but available. They already had to change the date in the Blog once, to match the street date instead of the Blog date.

I do sympathize with those who cannot afford it, I could only afford it because of the 10% discount from the store blog. But, basically, if they want to play the PC before they get the book making the alternate version available, they will be stuck with the Core version.

They have several choices, including making one or more new PCs to play in the interim, so they can sideline their rebuildable PCs until they have the book, or decide not to get it.

OK, thanks for the answers, the trait in question is Magical Knack and actually I was looking to retrain the Barbarian level to Cleric, but then I was left with a 'useless' trait.

I thought that in a rebuild you could rebuild traits, I must have been mistaken.

The idea was to rebuild the Barbarian level, rebuild the trait and then retrain the barbarian level to Cleric.

On the other hand, my 10th level pure rogue with no Archtypes is rubbing his hands.

Depending on where one lives in Europe that might not be an easy option because credit cards are not as common as they are in the USA. I usually have to take the "Hey, [father/girlfriend/friend], could you please buy some store credit on paizo.com for me?"-route.
If the situation the Netherlands is similar to Germany's situation that's not unlikely.

Try a prepaid credit card. Those should be available for free at most banks from 16 years on for students and people in apprenticeship.

I second the suggestion, and have to add that quite a number of local supermarkets and petrol stations started to carry the prepaid kind.

Agreed, but I feel that this is a special case, since only 40 or so pages of the book are really relevant (ok and skill unlocks) so just printing the class should be a valid option for many players.
