Pathfinder Battles Preview: Leapin' Lizards (Part 2)

Friday, August 22, 2014

Several months ago, among the earliest Lost Coast preview blogs, I revealed a few of the set's scaly denizens. This week we return from Gen Con with three more reptilian foes heading your way in November.

Here we have the weird-headed Goblin Snake, a vile creature that made its original debut way back in Pathfinder Adventure Path #1: Burnt Offerings, our very first Pathfinder product. As the Rise of the Runelords campaign that adventure kicked off takes place in Varisia's Lost Coast region, it seemed a fitting time to let this guy slither out from under the rockpile he's been hiding in over the last seven years. Goblin Snakes occupy the low end of the "heads on snakes" niche that places them as distant—if unacknowledged—cousins of the more powerful nagas. You can find their statistics on page 132 of the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 3. The Goblin Snake is a Small, common figure.

This not-so-little guy leaked out a few weeks ago when a canny retailer snapped a photo of one of my sales presentations, but here he is in all high high-res glory. What we have here is a particularly menacing Large Green Dragon, the latest in my quest to do all of the major dragons at all of the major size categories. We're a bit behind with Greens, but this guy is a good start and a fitting progeny for the Gargantuan Green Dragon case incentive for the Legends of Golarion set. The Large Green Dragon is a rare, Large figure.

Metallic dragons seldom get the love of their chromatic brethren when it comes to miniatures (prepainted or otherwise), something we'd like to address with Pathfinder Battles. Here we have a striking Large Bronze Dragon to lead the charge for goodness. The Large Bronze Dragon is a Large, rare figure.

Feiya Update!

We had a series of very productive meetings with our partners at WizKids last weekend at Gen Con, and I'm pleased to report the final details of the replacement figures for the insufficient Feiya, Iconic Witch figure from the Reign of Winter set.

As I mentioned in previous Friday blogs, WizKids will replace badly painted Feiyas with better versions of the same sculpt through their normal figure redemption service at WizKids.com. Folks who want to swap out their figures one-for-one are encouraged to use that system. That said, sending your figures in to WizKids involves the time, effort, and expense of putting something in the mail, and WizKids wanted to put forth some extra effort to make things a bit easier for loyal supporters of the Pathfinder Battles line.

I'm pleased to report that for the next set, Lost Coast, every case of figures will include one "super pack" among the rest. In addition to the four standard figures in that pack, the pack will ALSO include a FREE copy of the revised Feiya figure.

IN ADDITION, that super-booster will also include a previously unannounced improved repaint of the much-maligned King Irovetti figure from Legends of Golarion, the figure that had, prior to Feiya, been the most disappointing slide from paint master to production figure. WizKids' figure replacement service will also handle requests for improved versions of that figure. I'll let everyone know in this space when the replacement figures are ready—they're at the factory now, so it's safe to assume they will be closer to the November release of Lost Coast set.

Both of these figures will be identical to their previous versions, albeit with vastly improved paint jobs. The base text and sculpts will be exactly the same.

And that's all I've got for this week. Stay tuned for more cool reveals next Friday!

There is only one company right now making prepainted colossals, Dungeon Crawler. The sustainable rate for them looks to be about one every 1.5 to 2 years. That being said they're kind of small and everything would probably go more smoothly/faster for a larger company.

Could you list the homepage of the company or a link to their gallery?

Cause i can´t find them.
Thanks Alex.

Heres their mini page.

I'm not sure if you can order the 8x8 kraken yet - I think they're waiting until the kickstarter backers get their shipments. (Which is imminent).

They are waiting on fulfillment to finish for the Kickstarter before they allow orders on the Kraken, though I believe preorders are up. The next one will be a behemoth which is specifically meant to be a trademark friendly version of the Tarrasque.

That’s pretty nice the minis come on the standard circular basis. Not a lot of companies are doing that, usually you are left up to your own means to put on bases.

However, I am not seeing any ‘colossal’ minis yet except the Kraken. Have they said they plan to make more?

Love seeing the townsfolk, as well, although the paint jobs have a bit to be desired. I do like the paint jobs on the Massive Animate Tree and Kraken, though. And the Firbolg Skeleton looks great.

They plan to kickstarter a tarrasque next, but that's the first one. It should be available to buy after the kickstarter ones ship.

The larger the mini the better the paintjob. The kraken, biolante, and firbolg all look gorgeous. The new kickstarter will be mostly mounted minis with interchangeable mounts/riders and the tarrasque.

The Kraken have cleared US customs and should be shipping soon. Can't wait for mine!!

I'd love to see more photos.

Love that Bronze Dragon! Just amazing. Any idea the dimensions on it? How "Large" is large?

Do you guys have it inhouse where you could take a picture next to another Miniature to give us an idea of the size?

Will the "Super Pack" be available to order separately? I usually only get a brick but would pay extra to guarantee getting the fixed Freya and King

Now a quick question arising from Gen Con. I saw some photos on another site of a goblin pyro promo from gencon. I thought we were looking at a goblin rider or hell wisp? What changed? Also when do promos usually hit this site for us in the far away places?

I have a sizable pile of different promo repaints, some of which we haven't ever told anyone about. They'll be a surprise, when they show up.

So far this convention season has gone like this:

ORIGINS: Hellfire Wisp (Will-o-Wisp Repaint)
PAIZO CON: Bloodbriar Goblin Raider (Goblin on Goblin Dog repaint, slightly different from Emerald Spire version)
GEN CON: Goblin Raider (repaint of Goblin Pyro)
GEN CON PFS SPECIAL: Horned Demon (red-skinned repaint of purple WotR demon)

ALL of these figures exist in huge quantities in the Paizo warehouse (I think we gave away fewer than 500 copies of the Origins figure). They will all, eventually, appear on the Paizo.com store, probably after the convention season in a few weeks.

I check the site every few days for these, since I left my goblin raider in the hotel after gen-con... any idea when the might go up for sale?

You did what? Poor little goblin.

I feel like I'm going to be automatically disappointed [by WotC], because it means I've now got to try and track down and pay the $12.00-25.00 per miniature price just so I can put forth a set of fun invisible miniatures on the table when the situation calls for it. This reeks of the old-school style greediness that I first associated Wizards with back in the day.

$12+ per figure?

Hell with that.

A round base, with a thin layer of Milliput, and some footprints pressed in/painted on.
Could stand in for anyone, not just the PCs/NPCs WotC choose.
Make them by the dozen, in one night.

In fact, that's going to be my next job.

Cool idea, to be honest I didn't even bother with creating anything. I just use a Blank Base and it does the trick. :-)

By the way, the blank base makes a great Unseen Servant as well.

Not sure yet.

I feel like I must vent my strong displeasure regarding my Feiya/Irovetti replacement experience with WizKids.

I sent in my horrible Feiyas (two) and Irovetti on December 8. Today I received in the mail:

1. An equally craptastic Feiya complete with the melted face and smiley face.

2. A Baba Yaga mini from RoW.

3. A Janni from LoG complete with horrible face.

So, I lost one of my Feiyas, got a Feiya that still sucks and lost my only Irovetti to be replaced by a mini I did not want.

All-in-all, a really bad experience. This is why I will no longer be buying Pathfinder Battles minis. My suggestion to Paizo: partner with a miniature company that actually gives two hoots about the quality of their products.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge the replacements for these miniatures are not yet ready for distribution. Last news we heard about these was here.

I do understand your frustration though, especially when you have a company like Paizo which provides a high standard of customer service, that is partnered with a company who does not appear to put as high of a priority on customer service.

It would have been nice if someone from WizKids could have communicated the current situation with you. I'm not certain if you included a note with your minis, indicating that you were looking for replacements due to the quality control defects identified? I would like to think though that since you likely sent them 3 unbroken miniatures, that they would have been able to figure it out regardless though -- or at least it should have prompted an e-mail to you to confirm.

The WizKids replacement system has always bothered me that they cannot guarantee replacement with identical miniatures. To me the solution is quite simple:
1. Have a database with the inventory of replacement figures.
2. When people fill out a claim form and select which miniatures they want a replacement for, the database will be queried and will indicate if replacements are available for their claim. (If some minis are not available, perhaps the person may choose to keep them and try to make a repair, rather than risk never getting it back).
3. Once the person completes the claim submission form, then the figures are placed on hold for them, for a set period of time (4 weeks?).

I believe this small change would greatly improve their customer service levels, while keeping the process largely automated. It would also greatly reduce the number of customers unhappy with the replacement process. I would have less concern about being out of pocket for shipping costs, if I knew the end result would be satisfactory.

Thank you for the update. I was not aware the replacement minis were not yet ready/available. This frustrates me even more, as I specifically noted on the required form included in the box these three minis were to be replaced per the Paizo and WizKids agreement. I also sent their "customer service" three emails requesting updates as they never updated my RMA. It still has not been updated.

Wouldn't it have made more sense, after reading my form and realizing the replacement minis were not yet available, for WizKids to email me and say, "Hi, the replacement minis are not yet available. You have two choices: we hold on to these minis and replace them with the kinder, gentler versions when they finally are available; or, we'll send these back to you and you may resend them when we are ready to replace them properly."

Very. Very. Frustrated.

I like your idea, though. It makes a lot of sense. Which is probably why WizKids will not incorporate it. That, and it would cost them money.

I believe the main barrier to Wizkids providing better customer service is their size. As I understand it, they're a remarkably small company given the amount of product they produce.

That doesn't make it any more acceptable (I personally think you should expand your CS along with your business), but it's worth bearing in mind.
