Guide 6.0 and Changes to Pathfinder Society Organized Play

Monday, August 11, 2014

With Gen Con just four days away, we wanted to release the new and improved Pathfinder Society Guide to Organized Play (version 6.0) today so everyone has an opportunity to review it and discuss it before Gen Con. With the help of the Venture-Captains and Venture-Lieutenants, we have added several much-needed changes that we think will improve your experiences in Pathfinder Society play.

Most notably, the following changes will go into effect on August 14 when Season six kicks off at Gen Con:

  • Removed aasimar and tielfing as legal race choices. Added kitsune, nagaji, and wayang as legal choices.
  • The nation-based factions have transitioned to ideal-based factions. These new factions borrow some traits from past factions and introduce several new traits. Those who already have faction traits no longer appearing in the Guide to Organized Play keep those traits, but they are no longer available as options for new characters. If you are currently playing in a online game (PbP, VTT, etc..), you may finish the game with your character in its current faction. After the game is complete, you should immediately transition to one of the newer factions, with the exception of Grand Lodge and Silver Crusade.
  • Updated the faction goals for season six.
  • Added a new section in Chapter Five for special rules pertaining to Season 6, including information about time-worn technology and glitches.
  • Updated the shirts available for free reolls, including the new ones that go on sale at Gen Con.
  • Updated the art throughout to reflect the theme of season six.

There are quite a few more changes from version 5.1 to 6.0 so make sure to brush up on it before the new season starts.

Additionally, we have released the update to Additional Resources, including all of July and August books. That means you are able to get a few days to decide what new class you want to build from the Advanced Class Guide.

Finally, the Quick Start Guide has been updated to reflect the color scheme of season six, as well as a few changes in the text to match what is listed in the Guide.

We look forward to seeing all of the awesome VOs, GMs, and players at Gen Con, and are looking forward to an even more awesome campaign in the upcoming Year of the Sky Key. We sincerely appreciate everyone who provided feedback for the changes to the Guide for working together to make our organized play campaign the best itcan be for the player base, GMs, coordinators, and Venture-Officers. Feel free to pull us aside at Gen Con to chat about any or all of the above changes.

If that is the case then those from Mwangi should get Polyglot for free and those from Vudra should get Vudrani for free.

A logistical problem. Staples is unable to print this for me. The permissions are such that they literally couldn't (not wouldn't). I've never had that problem before. Is that something new?

Here you go from the Paizo Inc Frequently Asked Questions, this should get them to print it.

Can I print my PDF, or have it professionally printed?

You may print one copy of any Paizo PDF for personal use. Note that this only applies to products that list Paizo Publishing as the copyright holder—other publishers may have different policies; you'll need to contact them directly.

I like the clearing up of the Replay rules that made it clear you can only replay (With the exception of Tier 1 scenarios and Tier 1–2 sanctioned modules or GM Star Replay) to make a table legal.

It went from this which made it confusing:

Quote Guide 5.0 wrote:
If you have already played a scenario and wish to replay it for any reason, you must inform the GM that you have already played the scenario.

To this which clears it up:

Quote Guide 6.0 wrote:

What "faction-specific Prestige Award" isn't a vanity? Can you ditch the exchange and keep the 10% discount card.

I believe you keep your old faction boons from chronicle sheets as well right?

I am also curious about this as I have a couple of characters that seem to fit better into other factions now, but one in particular has little interest in losing her Hellknight vanity.

There may not be anything that can be done about this. I just looked at the restrictions on the PDF and they allow for printing. It is likely that the person at Staples is trying to do something that is triggering the "no edit" restriction. This can happen if they are trying to use imposition software or if they tried to combine multiple files before they print. Did you ask them to print this as a booklet or were you having them print multiple files?

I'd suggest using a "save as PDF" option from your computer's "print" dialogue to create a duplicate "new" PDF, which should avoid this sort of thing. (I use this to flatten Paizo PDFs before printing from a public computer to save the hassle of waiting on the public computer to do it, if they're slow, or the occasional mess where the public computer will print one ... page ... at ... a ... time.)

This should be a default option in Mac, and not difficult to achieve in Windows (I used the CutePDF printer, I think, when I had Windows?).

I'm assuming that Triaxians, Lashunta and Kasatha from People of the Stars are also not legal for play, and that it's not just Androids. They are not called out as legal, but only the Android is explicitly called out as not legal. The standard language used in the additional resources is that if something is not listed, than it is not legal, but calling out the Androids and leaving the rest unmentioned feels confusing, especially when the Android would be banned by omission if there was no text included on the races in this book. I feel like this would be better off stated as either "None of the races in this book are legal for play" or clearly specifying if any of them are legal.

Perhaps I'm reading too far into it, but I feel like there's a point to be made here.

Also +1 on making clear how we should treat season five faction rewards are the national and sczarni faction rewards from season 5 meant to be no longer available

That would be utterly confusing and strange if this was the case. The possibility exists to play as four-armed aliens, but not an artificially made human?

I doubt that's the case, though. I'm sure we'll see a clarification soon enough.

I'm going to go ahead and ask this here, my swashbuckler Is currently in a play by post that will not finish before the date which he is required to use the official version of his class rather then the playtest version. Should I expect to have to update the character as soon as the 14th rolls around, or am I expected to finish this play by post in the form that he currently is in?

Additionally, the swashbuckler in question does not meet the new prerequisites for Slashing Grace (which I took at first level), as I don't have Weapon Focus, but it was the next feat I was planning to get anyway. I imagine I will have to switch Slashing Grace to something else, and I took Exotic Weapon Proficency: Aldori Dueling Sword at 3rd level, could I switch Slashing Grace (Longsword) to Weapon Focus (Aldori Dueling Sword) or do I need to pick a feat I qualified for at first level (such as Exotic Weapon Proficency: Aldori Dueling Sword, and switching the third level feat to Weapon Focus? or would it need to be something else entirely?).

If nothing else, hit up your library if you have one nearby. many libraries have net access these days and you can print out your stuff there. Staples is cheaper perhaps, but I suppose it depends on your location. My local library charges 10 cents a page but they do it on high quality so...

Yep, sad in a way but I suppose understandable from a business standpoint.

We had a lengthy discussion the other day about over-running multiple targets at a single go. There's a 3rd person feat for it, but otherwise nada AFAIK.

Not digging the new Faction symbols. Darkives in particular, all about uncovering hidden knowledge and their symbol is burning books??? Liberty's Edge, is very, very "meh". Not sure what the Sovereign Court has to do with their symbol? It sort of seems mix of the newer Andoran faction symbol and something that suggests Tian Xia.

Season 5:
Determining Subtiers: In order to determine which subtier a mixed-level group of PCs must play in, calculate the group’s average party level (APL). Divide the total number of character levels by the number of characters in the party. You should always round to the nearest whole number.

Season 6:
Determining Subtiers: In order to determine which subtier a mixed-level group of PCs must play in, calculate the group’s average party level (APL). Divide the total number of character levels by the number of characters in the party. You should always round to the nearest whole number. If you are exactly at 0.5, let the group decide which subtier they wish to play.

Nice.

I don't know if this has been asked or not. Can a Tiefling/Aasimar character go on inactive hiatus until a racial boon is received and applied to the character?

I notice that Chapter 4 in the new Guide is pretty brief as to Factions and nearly silent on boons. I was thinking that you would be incorporating the "Faction Guide" into this Guide for The Year of the Sky Key. Since you have not done so, is there an estimate as to when the new Field Guide with this information will be available? Can we use the boon information in the Year of the Demon Field Guide until that time? Thanks.

Quote Guide 6.0:

Liberty’s Edge faction PCs qualify for Andoran faction
vanities and mission boons available in past seasons.
Likewise, Dark Archive faction PCs qualify for Cheliax
rewards, Scarab Sages as Osirion, The Exchange as
Qadira, and Sovereign Court as Taldor. Without a boon
that states otherwise, a PC cannot earn Sczarni vanities
or boons.

But it also says

Quote Guide 6.0:
You retain
your faction traits, if any, but lose any faction-specific
Prestige Awards you have accumulated during your time
with your old faction; generic Prestige Awards from
Table 5–4 and Vanities (Pathfinder Society Field Guide 60)

So the chronicle faction boons throughout season 5 map to their new factions, fine. But sczarni faction boons (5-18, 5-12, 5-06, & 5-02)... Don't happen? You gave us 3 days notice to collect all 4 chronicles? Bad form.

We likewise have 3 days to qualify for and purchase sczarni vanities?

Or do characters have until they play paths we choose to continue on getting sczarni things?

The question I have is does the faction retirement section stating:

Any faction-specific vanities, titles, traits, prestige items, or other purchases made while the character was a member of the retired faction are retained by that character with no changes.

Over rule the statement in changing your faction:

You retain your faction traits, if any, but lose any faction-specific Prestige Awards you have accumulated during your time with your old faction; generic Prestige Awards from Table 5–4 and Vanities (Pathfinder Society Field Guide 60)are unaffected.

In regards to changing from Andoran, Cheliax, Taldor, or Qadira to one of the new factions, as these factions both exist and don't exist in that they are somewhat different.

I assume this is meant to read as:

The way it is written now it sounds like:

Which makes no sense.
