Late to Class

Saturday, August 9, 2014

Greetings, Pathfinders.

We hope you're excited for the launch of the Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild—we certainly are!

Unfortunately, we've had some very bad news this week from our card printer. They had a problem with one of their presses, and many of the Class Decks they printed had to be destroyed. As a result, the retail release date for the Class Decks is moving from August 14 to September 3, and we won't be able to ship paizo.com preorders until shortly before that. And because you must have a Class Deck to participate in the Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild, that means that retailers won't be able to launch the program until September 3.

The good news is that this won't stop us from launching the Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild at Gen Con next week. Our friends at DriveThru Cards are rushing to print versions of the Class Decks that we can use in the Adventure Card Guild room, and we'll be providing printed character sheets for the characters you choose so you can register your character on Paizo.com and keep track of your rewards and deck upgrades as normal.

Our printer is also working to deliver some finished decks to Gen Con, though they may not arrive until later in the show. We promised a free Class Deck to any player who purchased 4 or more Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild events, and we will make those available for pickup in the PFSACG room as soon as they arrive. (And if the official decks arrive too late for someone to pick up, we will take that person's name and address and ship the chosen Class Deck as soon as copies arrive in our warehouse.).

We're very sorry about this situation, but we are committed to delivering the full amount of fun that everyone expected to have, albeit not on our desired schedule.

We still expect to have the Skull and Shackles Base Set and Character Add-On Decks to be available for purchase in the dealer hall, as well as all the available play mats and card sleeves from our partners at Ultra PRO.

Please use the thread below to ask any questions you need answered.

Sorry to hear the bad news. For those of us pre-ordering them and who were expecting them with this month's subscription, what does this mean for our regular PACG subscriptions? Will Skull and Shackles stuff ship for now without it and we'll be able to get these in September (either with our September subs or as a separate order)?

Still excited for this, and I can wait a bit to get it.

Bummer, but thanks for going the extra mile to make the Gen Con events still happen.

Ouch, that sucks. Glad to hear they'd rather do this than send a bad product though.

Bad printer in China, bad one in US, maybe Canada printer next :)

That stinks.

I'm going to Gencon, but wasn't able to sign up for any events (took me a while to find out if I'd be able to make it or not). Will there be any way to participate in the event, or even watch?

That is absolutely not true. Carta Mundi is a fantastic printer, and has done well by my games for two decades.

Sometimes things break.

i second Hawkmoon269's question for those of us with a pre-order added to our subscriptions shipment will the pre-order be moved back to the sidecart or might it stuck the shipment till September? (got one added to my subs shipment by CS last week because of an error on my part and that worries me and i'm probably not the only one)

Just adding my voice to the "my class decks were on my subscription order and I'd prefer if this didn't affect my S&S shipment." Sorry about the bad news!

Seconded on the question on S&S shipping.

Grab $2 worth of generics and come to a slot. We'll seat you if we can.

Glad you stand behind them. Hopefully, they will stand behind you and promptly fix the issues.

Ouch, this sucks! I am super sad that I won't be able to run the first session of organized play when I was hoping to at the end of August!

I am confident that Paizo and Carta Mundi are making the best possible result out of this circumstance.

Hopefully, my frustration at not being able to play the game sooner than later isn't coming across as being nasty. I'm confident y'all will get it fixed. However, as a paying consumer, Ill still hold y'all's feet to the fire from time to time.

As disappointing as this maybe, it shows how much the team here cares. There is a problem, they did not wait till we as the customers asked about it. I am glad to see that they have made an alternative solution to those who will be attending GenCon to still have a great experience. Thank you for all the hard work that was put into these games, and the stress that I'm sure this news has put you under.

OK, so I am signed up for a session on Friday morning with just me and my wife. There wasn't 4 tickets available. How will we be able to play? It says some things will be provided, but how am I going to be able to choose from the 28 available characters before then? For those of us who were not lucky enough to get the 4 slot minimum, how will it work for us?

Are we getting proxy cards to use? I had planned on getting all the class decks, pouring over all the options with my wife on Thursday night and making a choice for each of our character by Friday morning. Are you going to release all of that information before the show so that I can make an informed choice of character?

What happens to those people that signed up for 4 events at Gen Con. They were supposed to get a free pack. Is that out the window?

It was answered in the OP.

I'm sure she does too. I asked the question (because it is worth asking), but I should have said even then, that it is Saturday. Customer Service is off for the weekend. I'm sure the answer to my question will come Monday. So I hope asking didn't get anyone too nervous. I'm sure this will all get sorted out. No need to panic.

You will use "proxy" cards during play at GenCon.

My guess is that means DriveThru will print decks that Paizo will use to let people play at GenCon. They probably won't be perfectly like the real decks. Maybe they'll have different card stock or slightly different cuts on the corners or things like that, or maybe the only difference is they will only print the boons up until a certain deck number, since no one will reach a high deck number during GenCon. But whatever it is, it sounds like it will be perfectly fine for play at GenCon.

They have said elsewhere they will try put the character sheets out before GenCon, so that will still let you see the characters before you go play.

So this only affects the class decks, correct? The base set and character add-on deck are still on schedule for an August 14th release?

If that's the case, I don't really mind the delay so much. It will give myself and others time to play the game without organized play first and digest the new mechanics. It will also provide more time for people to learn the organized play rules (assuming the guide is still released to the general public sometime before/during Gen Con) and try to get more people interested in the game before OP goes live at retailers. I don't know about anyone else, but for me its a little difficult to try to use organized play as a selling point for new players when all of the details aren't known yet.

And I was going to provide cake for my launch of ACG. Well, that just gives me more time to do this. Bit easier on the wallet too.

So does this delay the PDFs for the stores as well? I've arranged for a burnable disk so the store can put in the files while I get them to a printer. I'd like to know what I'm going to be working with for the gig.

Grand Lodge

Very sad that there was a hiccup but as the quote goes, "Sh*t happens". We'll let Paizo pick themselves up, brush off and move on.

I hope the free decks come in time, though.

Since I (and many others) were planning on purchasing class decks at GenCon, are we going to be able to pre-purchase them there? Sadly, was hoping to save on shipping and just pay sales tax. How is all that going to work? And we'll have the decks to us by Sept 3rd? If OP will be pushed to the 3rd, I am hoping to start running it for the store on the 4th.

(That does mean you're releasing the scenarios starting the 3rd, right?)

Scarab Sages

Bummer. Looking forward to these decks. To quote the slogan from a famous ketchup commercial: "The best things come to those who wait."

Skull & Shackles is unaffected by this issue.

I'm sure I can speak for some and say that while I am dissapointed in the delay, I am very pleased that there are quality control measures being taken to ensure that correct product be sent to all of us.

So even though we get bad news today, thank you for all you guys do.

If you do manage to get some in for the con, will they only be available as the freebie pickup or is it possible some will go on sale at the Paizo booth?

If they arrive later and are on sale, will there be warning before they go up or will it be whoever is lucky enough to be right there when it happens? I imagine quantities will be extremely limited so they would sell out super fast.

Also, I guess I'll ask the question now that I was going to ask at the con. I bought six tickets for one slot for myself and five friends. Does that qualify for the "4 or more tickets gets a free deck" or does it have to be 4 separate time slots? Originally I was just going to buy all 7 decks early Thursday and if I got a freebie give it to a friend but now whether I get any at all seems to hinge on the question.

A shame, but I'm sure everything possible will be done to allow people to play Guild games at GenCon.

Grand Lodge

If the printer is able to get you some at the show, will it be a significant number, or something like a dozen or two, which will sell out as soon as they come in?

My wife and I had planned on buying a couple, so Im just curious i thats still gonna be possible.

So... When are the Skull & Shackles Base set shipping? My subscription is still pending since the 4th of August.

Grah, I was hoping to buy these all at GenCon when I had my subscription discount and didn't have to pay shipping.

don't doubt it, Paizo CS never failed me and i never saw an angry customer's rant anywhere saying they failed him/her so i'll keep faith.

on a side note one of my friends wanted to join the PSACG but put that on hold cause there's no paladin class deck, any chance we get a idea of when other classes' decks are gonna come out (for the paladin i guess worst case scenario that would be start of season 1 since it's WotR)

Tomorrow, I'll be sending an email about this to the retailers who have signed up for PFSACG play on our website, and to our PFS Venture Officers.

Season of the Shackles was planned for a weekly schedule, with each new adventure beginning on the day that its adventure deck is released. So we need to sync back up to our plan as soon as possible. Thus, we will be releasing the first *four* scenarios to retailers and PFS VOs on September 3, and then we're on to the weekly schedule.

As of Friday, all we know is that the printer is going to try to get us some decks during the show. We don't yet know if that's just going to be enough to cover the needs of the Adventure Card Guild or if it will include enough to put on sale. We don't yet know what day they'll arrive. For that matter, we don't know for sure that they *will* arrive. But we will do our best to spread the word as things firm up.

FYI, while you don't have to pay shipping at Gen Con, you do have to pay Indianapolis sales tax instead.

Hmmm lets see, 7 class decks at 15.99 each * 7% sales tax =

$7.84 in tax buying at GenCon.

Total = 119.7651

If I order them at home in California I have to pay use (sales) tax and shipping.

Having it shipped looks to be ~$13.97 + 7.5% use tax * 7 decks at 15.99 each = $22.36 in tax and shipping.

Total = $142.68

That's a 19% increase in price, figure that entitles me to a little bit of grumbling at least. Also sometimes I wonder if my accounting degree does me more mental harm than good.

I think they have plans to get Season 1 up and running as soon as WoTR Base Set comes out, so delaying the release schedule for Season Zero scenarios would get in the way of that.

Pirate Rob, my FLGS (you know the one) is selling them at 15% off if you pre-order them... If you want, I could arrange a way to get them in your hands by, say, Pacificon? :)

I'll figure it out, I mostly just wanted to grumble a bit, although I'm not sure you can guarantee arrival prior to Paficon if the release date isn't until Sept 3rd anyway.

Speaking of these things, I don't see you registered for Pacificon...
