Year of the Sky Key Begins!

Monday, July 28, 2014

The expedition to Jormurdun has nearly concluded, and with it ends the Year of the Demon. However, the Pathfinder Society is on the cusp of making an exceptional find, catapulting us into the The Year of the Sky Key. With the season change, many factions are also finalizing their changes from extensions of national interests to independent entities with updated goals. A brief overview of each faction’s goals for Season 6 is included below, along with a link to the full text of each faction head’s letter on the messageboards.

Dark Archive: Establish the Dark Archive’s reputation with the Grand Lodge, and seek out skilled mentors to train the faction’s curators.
The Exchange: Develop trade routes and contacts in western Garund.
Grand Lodge: Follow up on recent developments in the Mwangi Expanse.
Liberty's Edge: Fight corruption and tyranny wherever it appears.
Scarab Sages: Explore the Jeweled Sages’ sanctum and seek lost relics of the order.
Silver Crusade: Serve as soldiers of peace by redeeming criminals, delivering aid to the afflicted, and handling the aftermath of the Mendevian crusade.
Sovereign Court: Build alliances with nobles across the Inner Sea region.

Thanks for your participation (and feedback) in the Year of the Demon. Pathfinder Society Organized Play continues to grow and thrive, and this year will be the best yet. As always, Explore, Report, and Cooperate!

I ran them a few weeks ago - but from the (my former shadow lodge now Andoran character's) standpoint of what the faction *does* / stands for, LE seems to be the closest to what the Shadow Lodge was at its most popular.

I've been picking at that one for a few weeks now. Don't thing we're gonna get an answer till the GTOP gets updated. to be fair, if they did allow it, we'd probably see a mad rush of Risen Guards going up right before the new season starts. And I would not doubt if it gets removed from being available next season regardless.

I have a character who is considering going to the Risen, however the Dark Archive suits his flavor more going forward into the new factions. Now, if they say that Risen Guards are bound to the Scarab Sages, I'm okay with that as well, they still aren't THAT far off from my character's goals.

Does everyone get a free faction change or just affected factions?

My wizard, for example, despises Cheliax, but would fit pretty good into the Dark Archive - so if I play him now as a Grand Lodge member [which I just chose because it came closest to what I had in mind], would he be forced to pay prestige points to switch to the Dark Archive?

It's been stated that everyone can change if they want to.

While I saw Mike's post, the example was picked poorly.
He confirmed that unrelated changes like "Taldor to Silver Crusade" were possible - but that these would be possible was a given because the Taldor faction kinda ceases to exist.
The other way round, "Silver Crusade to Sovereign Court" is what I am wondering about.

Well, these latest changes in faction more or less completely screw a few of my characters. The change from the Lantern lodge more or less ended play with a character I enjoyed and now MONTHS of investment in a Chelish patriot is due to go down the toilet because I just can't see him working with Draleen. Fortunately I've another Chelish character who won't have any issues with the change but I'd be lying if I didn't say the changes did not cut my enjoyment a bit.

Sincerely hoping there is always a Grand Lodge. Moving forward all my characters are just going to be GL. Less chance of having to trash character backgrounds/motivations with changes in approach to the PFS story line.

That said, is there a blog somewhere on the wheres, hows and whys of the changes in factions?

Well, I took my eye off the ball.

I introduced a brand-new Sczarni PC, just last weekend, with no indication from anyone that the faction was disappearing.

What are disreputable kleptomaniac Tengu (and their irritable owlbears) best suited to join?

We are eh.. looking for some loyal Sczarni brethren in this new "Exchange", see. I don't know about your type eh.., I don't like those outsiders that keep popping up over my homeland, but you just look like a uh.. bird. That could be eh.. useful for us, if you catch my drift. I don't trust this new Al'Hakam that's in charge, but we need to use him to our advantage, see. He seems too legitimate, I can't always be ready to pull out some diplomacy and eh.. show him my knife skills, see. Just help make sure that Qadiran agenda is the eh.. one we Sczarni want, and you'll be more than welcome in the Exchange.

Scarab Sages

OOC, I love merger of the Qadira and Sczarni factions. It's like the birth of the Ferrengi Alliance and the Exchange from KoToR mashed together.

And of course there will be internal disagreements and jockeying for power as the separate groups merge, but there will be opportunities for great profit.

I also made a Chelaxian (now level 3) right before the Dark Archive was announced. Out of 19 characters I didn't have any Cheliax, so I went all out (worships Asmodeus, hails from Egorian, uses the term "slip" liberally). But, being a Lawful-Neutral swashbuckling pirate-hunter, she has no interest in joining Dralneen's new Faction. I suppose the Sovereign Court would be the next best idea, simply for the fact that she loves a good party with caviar and wine. But still.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm new to the Society. So are these the only factions that will be around when the new season starts? What happened to Andoran?

We're getting a name change to "The Edge of Liberty" and cuttin ties with the nation of Andoran. We'll still be collecting slavers heads in bags, don't worry.

Do we have an ETA on the new player's guide?

As far as I can tell, there's been very little public information regarding the Season 6 guide.

My best guess is that it will be released on August 14th, when the new season kicks off.

Darn, I was hoping to have my new character ready to go ahead of time. Since as an (unplayed) Aasimar he would now be illegal.

I’m really hoping we receive it before then. I always like to print out and keep a hard copy of the guide, and would like to do that before I leave for GenCon.

Last year I believe season 5’s guide was released 4 days or so before GenCon.

Spoiler:
One Quadira/Lantern Lodge mission made the deceverite look NE in such a way that I was dang glad the SL was around watching them.

In fact, when we did a "compare factions to Babylon 5", SL came off as B5 while GL came up as Earth Alliance. Shadows Last Stand is my least favorite scenario because of how they handled the demise of that faction.

Hope they don't do that kind of knife job to the Scarni.

Still, I thought Guile was much more interesting than the Quadiran guy I can't remember and don't care about. We're getting rid of the wrong leader. We need cool and useful scum like him (and Torch).

Still, would like 1-2 more factions.

And I always saw them as LN -- the Internal Affairs division which just makes sure that everything gets done by the book and all the agents make it home alive.

When Shadow Lodge went away, my Monk's new faction was practically a coin flip between Silver Crusade and Cheliax -- they both made sense for different reasons.

I used to describe them for new players the way Wes Nicholson did for a 12 year old a few years ago - One half US Special Forces "No one gets left behind!" and one half Tinfoil-hat-guy "Who watches the watchers?"

Coming from that point of view (as Obiwan Kenobi might say), I see Liberty's Edge as the closest fit for my former "H" faction characters.

Given his name is Guaril, I question how interesting you really find him... :P Seriously though you do not appear to have ever played a member of the Qadiran Faction so why would you remember the Faction head? His name is Aaqir al'Hakam by the way.

I have liked each of the Faction heads, in their own way.

Seriously. Part of the reason I have never played a member of the Qadiran faction (not that it is any of your business) is because reading the faction missions, reading about him, I could never get a picture of him that made him matter.

In contrast, I can picture Guaril offering a young half orc a loan to set up an 'Orcish Barbaque resturaunt' in Absalon, in exchange for occasional body disposal and going on missions for the pathfinder society.

I can see Major Colson Madris recruiting and mentoring a young half elven girl from a ranch up near the Five Kings Mountains much like a high ranking military officer mentors his juniors.

Lady Gloriana Morilla would of course offer succor to an aristocratic family from Oppara who left under a cloud of scandal....in exchange for the use of some unique talents from time to time.

Ollysta Zadrian would be glad to get help for old supporters and clerics of Sheyln whose daughter is showing signs of being a tiefling and a pit born one at that. Darn Sarkonian heritage.

Everyone know working for the Paracountess would be....interesting. My paladin slept with Torch and I would easily sit down for tea with her faction head, Amara Li.

The point is, I can picture and include many of the faction heads as people in my character's backgrounds.

Simply put, Aaqir al’Hakam does nothing for me. None of my play has made me say 'Gee, joining the Quadiran faction makes sense because I could totally see Aaqir al’Hakam reacting this way to them or recuiting the character because of this.'

So, never playing a faction does have something to do with its leadership, at least for me.

Heh. And that,. to my mind, exemplifies why Qadira and Sczarni are merging. Qadira was too bland and boring, and Sczarni was too flamboyant and exotic.

Mix them, and you might just wind up with a tasty but tolerable meal, instead of porridge or wasabi...

Aaqir:
To be honest, the most interesting thing I have seen about Aaqir is that he has a husband. There really isn't that much about him for use in the RP heavy portions of Merchant's Wake, which should have been where he got a good spotlight. Sigh.

Fair enough.

To be clear, I simply meant, that as a player I would not expect anyone to remember a Faction Head they had nothing to do with. I was not, in any way, meaning to state that you had no right to an opinion regarding the Trade Prince. I apologize if I came across otherwise.

I have no problem remembering the Trade Prince. I find him to be an interesting character. I can easily imagine how he handles himself and how my character would have interacted with him. You don't and that's fine, too.

For me I have been playing Qadiran before the Trade Prince was even a character. I choose what faction to play for a character based on the faction and the character, not the faction head. Just a different play style is all I guess.
