Changing Seasons

Monday, May5, 2014

This time of year is always special. Just take a look outside. For those in the northern hemisphere—well, I can at least speak for the Seattle area—flowers are blooming, the sun is out (mostly), and the afternoons have been delightfully warm. Yes, it's clear that the seasons are changing. Spring? Summer? No, I'm referring to Pathfinder Society Organized Play!

The Year of the Demon is on the home stretch, and there are another six scenarios in the works to conclude the Pathfinder Society's expedition into the Worldwound to explore the dwarven Sky Citadel Jormurdun. The path to the dwarven ruins is fraught with danger, though, starting when misfortune strikes the Society's basecamp. With the PCs' help, I'm sure the Society will be able to embark with their motley crew of allies accumulated over the past year. That small army is going to come in handy in Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–24: Assault on the Wound, especially when the Pathfinders come face-to-face with a pair of villains who have long vexed the organization during Scenario #5–25: Vengeance at Sundered Crag.

All of that effort will pay off at Gen Con 2014 with the debut of Pathfinder Society Special: Legacy of the Stonelords, an exciting delve into Jormurdun with some delightful twists written by Mike Shel.

Elsewhere in the world, Aaqir al'Hakam has returned home to mourn the death of his mentor, but darker plots are afoot in Qadira. Meanwhile, agents in Mendev must save their fellows from the fires of misguided inquisition in Scenario #5–22: Scars of the Third Crusade, and back in Absalom, the Blakros family approaches the Society with word of a powerful artifact sought after by their mutual enemy. The problem is that the artifact is secreted away in shadowy Nidal, which the PCs visit in Scenario #5–23: Cairn of Shadows.

Finally, as an added bonus, we're including an extra Pathfinder Society Special this year: The Paths We Choose. Written by Tim Hitchcock, a veteran author of Gen Con Specials, The Paths We Choose explores each faction's choices over the previous season including ways in which the faction's goals, means, and motives are evolving based on player choices.

Expect product pages of these and the first three scenarios of Season 6 soon.

Happy gaming

Dare I hope for Mud Sorcerer's Tomb 2?

I'm even more excited for the special, especially if Mr. Shel plans to attend Paizo Con for the test run.

Hmmm.. someone show me how to use roll d 20 so i can get enough stars to run the special... :)

Oh holy cats. That second special sounds *excellent*!

Does this mean that 5-24 and 5-25 (both 7-11 I believe??) are essentially Part 1 and Part 2?

ooooo... I gotta make sure I have a Qadiran character ready for Paths We Choose during Gencon... that sounds extra fantastic!

They are not part of a formal series. Rather, they are two aspects of a larger operation that happen almost simultaneously. This is an opportunity for characters of almost any level to play a critical role in the expedition. How they mesh together will be even clearer once we release the two adventures.

So by special is it a "special" like Siege of the Diamond City with multiple tables? Or is it an exclusive along the lines of The Cyphermage Dilemma and Day of the Demon?

In addition, if it is the former will there be a Seeker tier? It's funny that there were Seekers at Nerosyan but not at Jormandun? Smells fishy to me.

You don't need stars for most of the specials, just a big enough event. Maybe MEPAcon Spring 2015 if you make it. ;) Or Dreamation 2015 Those guys have been running the season specials at their NJ convention in Morristown

I can confirm, I'm a 1-star GM, but I'm going to be running the special at GenCon.

Hopefully. I might even be able to afford a hotel this time :) . Not that waking up for an early AM sing along with some coyotes in the state park wasn't fun, but those showers were colllllldd.

Part of the problem with dming at a con is being able to solidly commit to being somewhere months in advance. The vultures circling my car a little iffy.

I thought there were specials like day of the demon or cypher mage where you needed either stars, venturehood, or a large venue to run?

The term for that is an Exclusive, which does require 4+ stars or a regional coordinator title.

Needs to be told to some regional GMS including some VOs who looks at me all cross eyed when i call the specials that instead of "interactive" and exclusive "exclusives" instead of specials! I mean it says it on the Chronicle sheets!

Also The Paths We Choose sounds most intriguing.

A few of us have staked some money on who the villains for Sundered Crag are...

Spoiler:
Torch and Spider, perhaps?

And for The Paths We Choose - someone locally threw out a funny idea that tables might get mustered by-faction...a thought that got less funny and more cool the more we talked about it - would certainly be *very* interesting!

Either way, I'm super excited for the rest of Season 5 and GenCon '14!

This is going to end awesomely. :)

I am sure a bunch of our local players wouldn't mind one of those villains to be Torch.

When I first read this blurb, my mind immediately jumped to the thought that the two villains for Sundered Crag are:

Spoiler:
Tancred Desimire and Thurl
.

However, the blurb mentions that the two have long vexed the Society, and one of those doesn't really count (in terms of scenarios encountered in). And, while I would love to see Torch, I'm not counting on it. Therefore, I think it would be great to see:

Spoiler:
Tancred and Pasha

My first thought of the villains were

Spoiler:
Kafar and Nefti.

My local lodge hates those guys.

Im betting its more likely these than Torch. Heck, Pasha is probably more likely than Torch.

Of course it could be...

Spoilers for Kalkamedes and Traitor's Lodge:
that glabrezu, assuming you are among the people who believe it to be the same one. I could see it being him and Thurl.

Who is Pasha? (Or I guess, from what scenarios?)

Majuba wrote:

Pasha Muhlia al'Jakri. There was a short snippet from her that appeared after her faction head retirement. It's not at all clear that she has any reason to bear a grudge on the Society so much as on Grandmaster Torch, Dorianna Ouida, and the original Shadow Lodge, though. She might be gunning after Torch.

Former head of the Qadira faction.

Any chance we can get the level ranges for those scenarios spoiled? Some of us have characters awfully close to 12, and have to plan carefully to have the gencon special be the end of their normal pathfinder career.

Grand Lodge 5/5

IIRC, theyve said it was 1-11 only this year.

The Legacy of the Stonelords is 1-11, and The Paths We Choose is 3-7 according to the March 3rd blog about GenCon.

I don't know if they've given out the ranges of the other regular scenarios yet, but it should basically be one for each tier I think.

Silver Crusade 5/5

I think unknown Ediology is on the right track. His first guess is initially what I was thinking as well. I'd be okay if it was Muhlia as well, I happen to have a a Taldan Duelist that would like to show al'Jakri how Taldans pay their debts.

Anyone know how the sub-tiers will be split for Stonelords?

I had thought level 5 was the odd one out from previous years. So I'm guessing 1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9 & 10-11?

Silver Crusade 5/5

I think tier 9 was the odd man out last year. I think it's 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 10-11.

Edit: Having consulted my chronicle from Siege of the Diamond City, I can confirm that 9 was the odd man out. Question, can ninth level character's play in the exclusives? If they do, do they get their choice of 7-8 and 10-11?

Thanks, not sure why I was thinking 5th level.

And in answer to your question, they can play, but they just play out of tier. They don't get a choice, it depends on what the average party level of the table brings the sub-tier to.

But either way, they get the same gold whether they play up or down as out-of-tier gold is already worked out. Obviously the challenge is going to be different for them.

Edit: I see your point. What I said normally happens that way, but I think they will have the tables seperated by sub-tiers. I believe they get a choice on which table they want to go to.

Although what I said on gold is true, they get the same amount whether going 7-8 or 10-11.

Silver Crusade 5/5

Well, it's multi-table with different tables for all the different tiers, which is why I'm asking. If there is a 7-8 and a 10-11 table with empty seats, do I get my choice if I'm playing a level nine character?

Edit: That's what I'm thinking, that I would get the choice to play up or down. The OOS gold is a given, That's just as true now as it is in any normal society game.

Edit to the edit: That last bit in my previous edit may come across as snarky, if it does, that is not my intent.

I believe you do get a choice in this situation on playing up or down as you can choose which table to play at (and therefore which sub-tier).

Edit: I'm not certain now, I had thought the tables were grouped by sub-tier, but the more I think about it, I don't believe they are. Players just usually group themselves together for accurate levels.

If that’s the case, then the 9th level character wouldn’t be able to choose, he would end up playing in the sub-tier of the average level of the table.

For example, if the table is 8, 10, 10, 11, 11 and the 9 wanted to join, then the APL would round to 10, so he would be playing up.

Hobbun wrote:

This has been the case in the past.

Ok, thanks Carlos.

Then disregard the last edit in my most recent post. lol I’ve done the specials three years straight, you would think I’d remember how the tables were split.

5/5

The L.9's actually have less choice than other level characters, who can play in their own sub-tier, or the one above or below. However, when there are sufficient tables, it's best just to play in the correct one.

Hopefully L.9 is the odd one out, previously it has also been L.7 which was rather bad, for Pre-gens and just the commonality of the level.

Taldans and their debts:
This debt is not owed by the Pasha, it was, rather, owed by the Taldan creep who used her, and the Pathfinder Society itself, as his foils to get his relative murdered.

Fortunately, he paid his debt within minutes of causing the crime to be commited.
