Advanced Class Guide

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Just a few weeks ago, we announced the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Class Guide, an exciting new addition to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game due out next summer. While we talked about it a fair bit at Gencon, this blog post is here to get you caught up on all the news!

This 256-page rulebook will contain 10 new classes, each a mix of two existing classes, taking a bit from each class and adding new mechanics to give you a unique character. Around the office we're calling them "hybrid classes." You can think of the magus (from Ultimate Magic) as our first test of this concept. It takes some rules from the fighter, some rules from the wizard, and then adds its own unique mechanics.

At this point, you're probably wondering what new classes you can expect to see in the Advanced Class Guide. So far, we've announced five of the ten classes.

Bloodrager: This blend of sorcerer and barbarian can call upon the power of his blood whenever he goes into a rage. He also has a limited selection of spells he can call upon, even when in a mindless fury!

Hunter: Taking powers from both the druid and the ranger, the hunter is never without her trusted animal companion, hunting down foes with lethal accuracy.

Shaman: Calling upon the spirits to aid her, the shaman draws upon class features of the oracle and the witch. Each day, she can commune with different spirits to aid her and her allies.

Slayer: Look at all the blood! The slayer blends the rogue and the ranger to create a character that is all about taking down particular targets.

Warpriest: Most religions have martial traditions, and warpriests are often the backbones of such orders. This mix of cleric and fighter can call upon the blessings of the gods to defeat enemies of their faiths.

Of course, those are just half the classes in this book. There are four more we have yet to reveal.

"Four?" you say. "But I thought there were ten!" And you would be right—because I'm about to let you in on another of the classes that will appear in this book, which we haven't announced until this moment!

Swashbuckler: Break out your rapier and your wit! The swashbuckler uses panache and daring to get the job done, blending the powers of the fighter and the gunslinger! For those of you who don't use guns in your campaign, fear not—the base class is not proficient in firearms (although there will certainly be an archetype in the book that fix that).

But that's not all! This book will also contain archetypes for all 10 new classes, as well as a selection to help existing classes play with some of the new features in this book. There will also be feats and spells to support these new classes, as well as magic items that will undoubtedly become favorites for nearly any character. Last but not least, the final chapter in this book will give you a peek inside the design process for classes and archetypes, giving you plenty of tips and guides to build your own! Since class design is more art than science, this won't be a system (like in the Advanced Race Guide), but rather a chapter giving you advice on how the process works.

So, there you go. That's six of the 10 classes that will appear in the Advanced Class Guide and an overview of what else you can expect from this exciting new book. While it's due to release next August, you won't have to wait too long to get your hands on these classes, because we're planning to do a public playtest here this fall! Check back here for more news as the playtest draws close!

@Dr.Chuff
Whereas I'm not in Germany I do work midnights in the US so I'm consistently refreshing the page too. Also, your written English is better than most native speakers! :-P

Thanks for the compliment ;)
I refresh it every time I walk past of the pc.
Btw. I'm curious how the classes are translated to german.
Like the warpriest = Kriegspriester
But you certainly less interested.

I dunno, I'd be interested too.

If you post them, that'd be cool.

Unfortunately, for my part you are correct. However, my father is a different story. He spent 6 years in Germany and is semi-fluent and always curious about translations with these sorts of things.

Refreshing away my boredom pangs /tune

Is it out yet?

Grand Lodge

If the book is published in german, I will give you the translations of the classes.
In the german translation of the older books (corerules etc.)a few strange things are already there.
Like the summoner = Paktmagier and the oracle = Mystiker.

Paizo really needs to relocate to Central European Time. ;)

I hate it too, Alaryth (estoy interesadísimo en el arcanista, tengo un Pj al que muy probablemente le vaya como anillo al dedo). Anyway, we are up to receive an email when it's ready, not earlier than 14 UTC. So we may wait at least a few hours.
"Be water, my friend."

Grand Lodge

I am hanging for it. About 5 hrs to go is my guess

@ Gorbacz Exactly right :)

UK here ... so we've just hit 1300 and still waiting / hitting Ctrl + F5 every now and then (well, ALL the time to be truthful ...)

Ho hum ...

Cherish those words, friend mrtalkybaggy. They come rarely.

Man, suddenly being East coast USA time zone isn't bad!

6 AM here.. *Attempts to wait patiently, but rolls a natural 1*

For those who are trying to set their clocks to PST it should be about 5:20 AM at the Paizo office about now. It would be as early as 9:00 AM their time or later when they release the playtest.

7:19 am. Been awake since yesterday evening, cleaning the bathroom to occupy my time.

I'm guessing it's going to be out around 5pm GMT (Hope) will they just put it up with a new blog post?

Well, back to making my verison of Shattered Star more deadly in the mean time then. Can't wait to throw a bunch of Fire Giant Brawlers Swashbucklers at the PCs! >:)

I'm playing with alternate magic systems to pass the time.

I wonder if hybrid classes will help me finally kick the multiclassing habit. Probably not.

To pass the time, you guys could read some of the third party classes up on d20pfsrd.com. The ones by Kobold Press and Super Genius Games are top notch.

This class (Deductionist) is also pretty interesting, and will give the same vibes as the investigator. This class, the Malefactor, is pretty interesting too. You basically have an aura of bad luck around you, and this plays into many of your class abilities. Not the strongest, but definitely a fun one that will hopefully stimulate your character makin' center!

If you're a 3pp on that page that I didn't mention, please don't kill me. Unless you're Rite. Come at me, bro!

I've always felt that the Super Genius Games classes were a bit on the overpowered side myself

Some of them are quite baffling.

Part of it is because there is no real dedicated translation team. Ulisses Spiele just has a couple of people working on translating it on their own time. Which is why the German books are so far behind paizo's release schedule.

Anyone who's played MtG knows how awesome German translations can be :)

In any case hope this is going live before my bedtime tonight!

It is officially the 20th in Australia and no sign of the playtest document.

I feel cheated and empty. Will this wait never end?

I sometimes think the same about their Godlings, but that's more a reflection of the Build Your Own Class nature of them. I find the rest to have a lot of subtle power checks that make them end up being on par with or weaker than a lot of Paizo classes.

Grand Lodge

@Threeshades
Where they make the thing really well. Surely it is strange that classes are translated differently, but you know exactly what is meant by the class name.Unfortunately, there are some words in german simply not there . The wizards arcane school Conjuration is such a thing. A wizard of this school is called "conjurer", in german "Beschwörer". The Summoner however, would also mean "Beschwörer". Because conjurer and summoner means the same in german.
Of publications we are a good 6 months away from the Paizo stuff. That's because only two products appear in the month and certain things were not translated to german. Like jade regent. :(

Sovereign Court

I don't see the link. Is it out yet? What time does PAIZO open today? lol

It's only 6:30 AM Paizo time. It'll be around noon or later probably before the thing comes. So at least 5 1/2 hours, possibly more.

Shadow Lodge

8:31 am for me. Why must I wait?!

Expect later, rather than earlier!

Only YOU can prevent impatient waiting!

I think they have an 11-7 work day... So on the US East Coast (EST), earliest I'll see it is 2 O'clock, I believe.

Let's just say I'm glad things don't get translated into Dutch.

Come on Paizo, give us the playtest.

More accurately, many positions have flex time with 11 am being the lastest start time. That's what I think anyway. Even so, I think your guess is fairly reasonable.

We got a lot of waiting to do.

Liberty's Edge

In previous years, the playtests have either gone live almost as soon as Paizo opens (around 10 AM local time) or in the mid-late afternoon (about 4 PM local time). Which means we're looking at either a little less than 3 and a half hours or more than 9 hours, most likely.

Books aren't entered into Hero Lab until after they are published, so this info won't enter until August of next year. That's how Mythic went.
