PaizoCon 2013 Recap

Monday, July 15, 2013

PaizoCon was awesome on so many levels. For my part, the growth of Pathfinder Society was phenomenal. The weekend festivities began with a meet and greet party and fireworks spectacular hosted by Paizo Volunteer of the Year, Kyle Elliott. This set the tone for what proved to be the best PaizoCon to date.

We ran just over 230 tables for PFS games. That is an increase of more than 80 tables from last year. We debuted the Season 5 PFS Special, Siege of the Diamond City, which seems to have been received very well. We also debuted the GM 201 course to round out the GM training that started with GM 101 last year at PaizoCon.

The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game also received quite a bit of buzz. Participants were able to try out demo decks using cards that will be released with the full set at Gen Con.

We also had the normal schedule of awesome events, such as the preview banquet, the lottery games, the seminars, and the other events that make PaizoCon the truly memorable event it was established to be.

We look forward to seeing everyone next year for what should prove to be another best PaizoCon ever.

Ive never been to a large conlike this: However how does noise work with the tables so close to each other? I was thinking it must get very loud.

Or are the tables not so close to each other, it just appears to be in the camera shot?

They were quite close, and yes, it was loud.

I've described the big multi-table events as the sound of a jet taking off for eight hours. That said, the Special was not as noisy as I usually expect (I was watching it unfold from time to time), but that may have been due to sheer exhaustion on the part of the participants.

I know I was blitzed before Act 3 kicked off.

The noise was pretty horrible. The games were fun, and on balance it was worth it. However, when I started playing in the PFS room, I was wondering if I was going to make it through the weekend.

Lots of people (myself included) were hoarse by mid-Saturday.

I don't know if there's anything to be done about it, but some sort of noise-mitigation strategy in the PFS room (and the other big room with lots of tables) would greatly improve the entire experience.

I was surprised there were no partitions in use. At least I didnt see any in any of the photos. Is the configurations of tables at Paizocon indicative of the way most cons in the US setup their tables?

Looks like how the RPG rooms have looked at the cons I've attended. Table counts/types, space between tables, and use of a room's built-in dividing walls will vary depending on the available space, available tables, and planned event numbers, but this seems typical for a hotel space.

In PaizoCon's case, it would likely be annoying to divide up the large PFS room (which also reduces the total number of tables that fit in the room) and then undo it for the Special, where you need to be able to make announcements that the entire room can see and hear.

Hey All,

May I inquire, specifically to the "Paizonian Pantheon", when GM 201 will come out in PDF form?

GM 201 will likely be available sometime after Gen Con. Looking back, it appears we publicly released GM 101 in November 2012, and we might have a similar release date for GM 201. I still have plenty of Gen Con preparations to do, after which I can begin looking at preparing GM 201 for release in pdf form and form a better estimate.

I had a blast, as did most of my players. I had one death (in a group that played up), and very nearly turned the Colorado Venture-Captain into an undead shadow. Those shadows are scary stuff!!

Flicker won't let me comment .. but on the first page ... the pic listed as GM 101 (has Mike in the pick and the chick in the pink sweatshirt) was really GM 201... Mike and the guy next to him (sorry don't remember name) did an excellent job as the kid and domineering character playing parent.

Did the official results of the 2013 Special ever get posted? I understand they did "okay," but with the Special as I understand it, that's pretty darn vague.

Unfortunately partitions cost money, so generally have a negative impact on ability to host cons in the US.

So most conventions won't have any partitions between tables, and only a lucky few can afford to get a large number of smaller rooms for their rpg areas.

I know that our local convention has had the good luck to have small rooms with 2 to 3 tables per room, but as we grow, we will be losing that next year. :(

The old Coast Bellevue location's banquet room had literal built-in partitions that could be rolled/folded into the walls for stuff like the banquet, but I have to admit, I didn't see much in the way of that at the new location (excepting the Pathfinder Card Game room, which seemed to be partitionable). That said, I think the noise level is a necessary side-effect of big multi-table events like the Specials, or Grand Convocations, or whatever. And een though my very fagile hearing couldn't handle being in the rooms too long, it still wasn't as bad as the PFS games I've helped run where we're squeezed between a batch of Warhammer 40K tables and a batch of local Poke'mon tournament tables. That day was AWFUL.

PPS- Hey, Robyn!

Liberty's Edge 2/5 *

Hi Robyn,

That I didnt know. Like I said earlier, my experience with cons is very limited. I try to get to Arcanacon each year over in Melbourne, that is run out of a school (so they use the classrooms as artificial partitions)Of course its nothing like a US con in terms in size.

Sweet Mercy! How did the last photo on page one make the cut? I tell you wut, they'll let any yahoo Venture-Lieutenant wearing a San Francisco Giants ball cap gm the special.

My wife said that was a really nice photo of me. Thank You!

I'll pass the word! We don't roll in the same PFS tables (he runs the local university's PFS club, whereas I am a bitter old crank who left school long ago), but I've got his e-mail address, and we sometimes run into him when we go out to eat during some of our home games (the university's just down the road from one of our player's houses, and that road is paved with fast food chains).

Sweet. Things were taking a turn the last time I'd checked up, where the northwest quadrant had gone clear, but the southeast went dark yellow, so I was worried.

What level of table did you play at? My buddies Ben Bruck and John Spalding had me run a pile of stuff to get a couple of their PCs up to 15th to be part of the high-level action.

I had already played two tier 7-11 games that day so I gave my brain a bit of a break and played a new character at tier 1-2.

My Oracle of flame had a bit of a hard time since a lot of the things had some fire resistance and ended up helping fire the big (anti-)siege engines for a good amount of the time. Super fun scenario though.

Sorry Sir, I would have responded properly had the fact that LIFE gets in the way of the things we really want to do.

Thank you for the 411 RE: GM 201
