Taxfest!

Monday, April 15, 2013

For those of us living in the United States, today is the deadline by which we must file our taxes. Luckily, we in the real world aren't the only ones doing our civic duty today; inhabitants of the Inner Sea region are also participating in their own celebration of taxes, sponsored by the church of Abadar. Editor-in-Chief F. Wesley Schneider got his taxes done early, and used the extra time to put together a special holiday blog for the Pathfinder Society community. You will find a special Pathfinder Society Chronicle sheet below, which you can download and apply to a Pathfinder Society character during the date ranges noted on the sheet.

No one enjoys paying taxes. Every year, though, on the 15th of Gozran, priests of the church of Abadar spend the day walking city streets, doing what they can to make the bitter pill of annual taxes a bit easier to swallow. From dawn to dusk, clerics of Abadar attend the tax collectors of sizable communities as the tax wagons roll from door to door. More than just aiding in the yearly errand, the faithful personally thank every citizen for contributing to the improvement of their city, extol the public works funded by their contributions, and foretell the grandeur of civic projects to come. The disenfranchised and destitute they attempt to comfort as best they can, quoting from their god's dogma on work and worthiness, but this is not a day for discounts or deferrals.

At dusk, the Abadarans host several celebrations in parks, plazas, and other communal areas about the city, organizing donations and contributions from local vendors to feed and entertain all comers. Having already preached to most of the city over the course of the day, the clerics perform only a brief opening ceremony, dedicating the feast to Abadar, the city, and its great people. These celebrations are often quite distinct from neighborhood to neighborhood and are almost always divided along economic boundaries.

The festivities involving the wealthiest citizens usually happen on the steps of city hall or other grand civic buildings and feature the best music and food, but often little more than polite card and guessing games. These galas usually wrap up by midnight.

For the common folk, the parks and marketplaces take on a carnival atmosphere, with simple but good food, local ales, performances by talented citizens, and games of chance going on well into the night. A prevailing superstition through these festivals is that, during the celebration, it's lucky to kiss—or in some regions, pinch—a cleric of Abadar, leading to many a rosy cheeked cleric.

Even the city's poor are given reason to celebrate, as the local temple of Abadar hosts a cheery but unabashedly religious gathering on its steps, feeding all comers, doling out a hearty ration of wine, singing hymns of the faith, and providing tokens for a second wine ration for any who return to attend a service within the month.

For a holiday that revolves around paying taxes, this Abadaran festival isn't as reviled as one might expect.

Use the Chronicle sheet below to celebrate your pending tax refund or for a little escapism from the realities of whatever you may owe. And for those of you in other countries where taxes aren't due today, maybe you want to earn this boon while you can and save it for your nation's tax day.

Raise Dead allows you to bypass death, but NO Pathfinder bypasses Abadar's Tax Season.

Excellent boon, great idea.

Anyone willing to divulge the text of the boon, for those of us who can't download and view it at work and are too impatient to wait a few hours? ;)

That is awesome!

Activate as standard action, does not provoke, gain a benefit for the scenario based on your scenario tier (using your character level as caster level, targeting only you):

Tier 1, 1-5, 1-7: Bless (Upgrade to 10 min/level for 10% of the scenario's chronicle gold as tax)
Tier 3-7: Aid (Upgrade to 10 min/level for 10% of the scenario's chronicle gold as tax)
Tier 5-9: Heroism (Upgrade to 1 hour/level for 10% of the scenario's chronicle gold as tax)
Tier 7-11: Good Hope (Upgrade to 10 min/level for 10% of the scenario's chronicle gold as tax)
Tier 12+: Heroes' Feast (Upgrade to entire length of adventure for 10% of the scenario's chronicle gold as tax)

Can only use in PFS scenarios, not modules, unless you are using the Tier 12+ version.

Edit: You can choose to not pay the tax for the normal duration. The upgrade is only applied if you pay the tax.

For Jiggy and others who cannot see PDFs:
This Chronicle sheet may only be assigned to a Pathfinder Society character between April 15, 2013 and May 5, 2013. Once assigned, the effects may be used at any time thereafter.

Feast of Abadar: To celebrate Taxfest, you partake in an elaborate feast, joined by nearly every citizen in the settlement. As a result of this festival, you receive the effects of one spell determined by the tier of the scenario in which you’re playing at the time you use the boon. This effect can only target you and cannot be transferred to another character. Treat your character level as your caster level when determining level-dependent variables of each spell. Using this boon is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

When you activate this boon, you may choose to forgo 10% of your total wealth earned on the scenario’s Chronicle sheet as your tax. If you opt to make this civic sacrifice, you gain the effects of your tier’s spell for a longer duration, as noted below. This reduction in gold should be reflected in the GP Gained section of the Chronicle sheet rather than represented as an Item Bought.

With the exception of Tier 12+, this boon may only be activated while playing a Pathfinder Society Scenario, and cannot be used during a sanctioned adventure in the Pathfinder Modules or Pathfinder Adventure Path lines.

Tier 1, Tier 1–5, Tier 1–7: You gain the benefit of bless. If you pay a tax when activating this boon, the spell’s duration increases to 10 min./level.

Tier 3–7: You gain the benefit of aid. If you pay a tax when activating this boon, the spell’s duration increases to 10 min./level.

Tier 5–9: You gain the benefit of heriosm. If you pay a tax when activating this boon, the spell’s duration increases to 1 hour/level.

Tier 7–11: You gain the benefit of good hope. If you pay a tax when activating this boon, the spell’s duration increases to 10 min./level.

Tier 12+: You gain the benefit of heroes’ feast. If you pay a tax when activating this boon, the spell’s effects persist through the end of the adventure rather than for 12 hours.

Thanks, folks! And wow, that's a nice boon!

As a GM, can I just print and sign off on these for myself, or do I need a different GM (or even a VO) to sign off on them first?

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but... It doesn't say anywhere to cross off the boon after using it... sooo..... permanent heroism? Just re-up it every 5 minutes?

Or is it meant to be 1/scenario?

Just remember you get only one per player, for one single character (unlike the novel boons). Not every character.

In the past, you may sign one for yourself if you GM a game in the specified range.

Thanks for the reminder. I just assumed they were like the novel boons.

However there is no range on this. So does that mean I have to wait till I GM again to assign it to whichever character I'm assigning the GM credit towards? Sorry, new to holiday boons. Missed all the last ones.

The range on this one is April 15th to May 5th. You just need to make sure to play or GM a game in this period, and then get it signed and assign it to a character.

I think it is meant to be a once only thing.

If usable multiple times, it is clearly only usable once per scenario.

The boon is intended to be used only once. The church of Abadar only accepts taxes once a year.

That is the way all previous holiday and special event boons have been handled.

Plus it say in the boon

Quote:

The word "a" indicates a single character. If multiple characters were intended it would say something like "your Pathfinder Society characters".

Seasonal boons have always been one-per-player-only, whereas Tales boons have always been one-per-character.

Seasonal boons have always been one-per-player-only, whereas Tales boons have always been one-per-character.

We will be unveiling a revamped Pathfinder Tales boon system in the coming weeks, which will bring them in line with other Chronicle sheets (1 per player).

While I don’t play PFS, this boon is certainly interesting. I must point out one thing that my anal personality won’t let go though. This year in the U.S. taxes arn’t due until the 16th. So apparently taxes aren’t quite as certain as death anymore! ;)

Don't fall for this! Just because last year the 15th was on a weekend and the following Monday was a holiday, thus taxes weren't due until the 17th, this year has none of those things. Taxes are due on the 15th!

Venture-Captain, Germany–Hannover aka Hayato Ken

And how much exactly does a character has to pay in PFS as a tax?

Paizo Employee Developer

Hayato Ken wrote:

10% of the total gp earned on the Chronicle sheet prior to making any purchases, as detailed in the top section of the boon.

Paizo Employee Developer

The Chronicle sheet has been updated to indicate that the boon should be crossed off the Chronicle sheet upon being used.

Mark Moreland wrote:

Umm, so to be specific, are you saying once a scenario or once ever (cross off when used)?

A friend of mine refers to the empowering meal which the heroes' feast spell provides as "Heerios". ;-)

Grand Lodge

So that means that each of the Tiers is usable once? Or just a one shot, you choose which Tier?

On a side note, if the character has purchased some sort of real estate Vanity, can they deduct it form the 10%? Like say deduct 2%. Or how about if there are offspring written into the background, can the character get a 1% per child deduction?

How do I assign the boon to a character?

Catprog wrote:

Print the boon (see the link in the blog post above), then take it with you to a PFS game on or before May 5th. The GM will sign and initial it for you, and you can then apply it to one of your characters (your choice which).
