Pathfinder Battles Preview: Goblins on the March!

Friday, February 8, 2013

Here I am on Day 3 of my vacation in Maui, and naturally my computer has helpfully broken on me. I think that poor thing needed a vacation more than I did, and it's part of a psy-ops move to convince me NOT TO WORK on my vacation. Silly computer, it's 2013, man. I can blog from my iPhone!

So let's talk about goblins, even if briefly (to protect my vacationing thumbs).

May sees the release of the new Pathfinder Battles Builder Series We Be Goblins set, a collection of 12 goblin minis sold in a blind-packed, single-figure packages. The release is timed to coincide with Free RPG Day (June 15th), and our cool new free adventure, We Be Goblins Too!

That adventure (which you can get free at participating game retailers) features the same four goblin player characters we introduced in the original We Be Goblins adventure, and all four are included as brand new sculpts in this new Pathfinder Battles set.

Goblin player characters such as this fine gentleman, Mister Chuffy Lickwound!

In addition to five new sculpts like Chuffy, the We Be Goblins Builder Series set also includes exclusive repainted goblins from previous Pathfinder Battles sets, such as this Goblin Hero, originally from the first set, Heroes & Monsters.

Goblins from early sets like the Goblin Hero have been very popular on the secondary market, and they're starting to get pretty expensive. With a single-figure We Be Goblins pack selling for $2.49, figures like the Goblin Hero offer an affordable way to build up your goblin hordes!

And that's it for me. Back to the salt mines of tropical forests and black sand beaches. I'll find a way to preview two more figures next week, ideally with a computer fully recharged and healed with the spirit of aloha!

ERIC! You are the bomb! Great update. Cannot wait to run We Be Goblins Too! with these figures.

Enjoy Hawaii! I'm on Kauai, you should visit us next! ;p

Black makes the goblin hero look more serious. Serious about his violence.

Mister Chuffy certainly has a truly devious expression.

And the goblin hero appears to be a yet another color. This set will fit into my hoard nicely.

Grand Lodge

I really like the updated Goblin Hero, but Chuffy doesn't look sufficiently pustulent. Maybe if you filled his hollowed head with resin so he could ooze...

No, the bomb is coming in a future update.

Got to love these updates.

Thank you Eric. Enjoy your trip.

Is that a goblin alchemist reference or something else?!?

Also, thanks a bunch for doing this on your vacation Erik. That's pretty awesome of you.

Going down the list of goblin sculpts produced in Pathfinder battles, I come up with six exactly:

Goblin Hero (H&M)
Goblin Warrior (H&M)
Goblin Commando (RR)
Goblin Commando on Goblin Dog (RR)
Goblin Warchanter (RR)
Warchief Ripnugget (RR)

Add to this the Warchanter, Pyros, Warriors in metal (or bones), and Murgmo (PF online reward) and I think that's all the exsisting goblin sculpts.

The 7/5 split Eric is talking about has me confused (and very hopeful that I can get Ripnugget for $3!)

Hopefully the 2 colors of goblin from H&M are not considered 4 separate sculpts - if so that would most likely mean no Ripnugget and 2 goblin heroes/warriors in the set. Of course this only provides different minis if they are different colors in this set as well.

I'm hoping the 7th goblin is a sculpt already approved and set to go in the next mini set - Eric stated at some earlier point he has approve and seen(?) final figures for the next set.

There was a goblin cut from H&M so maybe it comes form there - not really a repaint though. Otherwise I can't see where this 7th comes from either Runelord.

Now, these ones...the repaints are OK. IO have a lot of goblins from the sets so these, while useful are not a high priority for me. I'll still buy them to add to the numbers - is 30+ goblin heroes and warrior to many?
The new ones, the "PC's", are awesome. Poog had me looking forward to the release but Chuffy is a truly brilliant and manic looking goblin. The pose looks great, but that face - fantastic. I can't wait to see the other 3 new sculpts, especially that alchemist (biased naturally by the fact that my LoF character is due to be a goblin alchemist).

Grand Lodge

7th is possibly the Goblin Dog.

or a sculpt from the next set

A sculpt is a sculpt. There are no alternate decos within this set, so this is the only Goblin Hero in We Be Goblins, for instance.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here is the set as I predict it:

1. Goblin Warrior - Repaint from H&M
2. Goblin Hero - Repaint from H&M (confirmed)
3. Goblin Commando - Repaint from RotRL
4. Goblin Warchanter - Repaint from RotRL (confirmed)
5. Goblin Commando on Goblin Dog - Repaint from RotRL
6. Warchief Ripnugget - Repaint from RotRL
7. Goblin Dog - Repaint from RotRL
8. Reta Bigbad - New sculpt of PC from WBG
9. Chuffy Lickwound - New sculpt of PC from WBG (confirmed)
10. Poog of Zarongel - New sculpt of PC from WBG (confirmed)
11. Mogmurch - New sculpt of PC from WBG (confirmed)
12. Vorka - New sculpt of NPC from WBG

I think Vorka would make such an interesting sculpt so I am fairly confident the 5th would be her. Plus, perhaps we will see her again in WBG2? Who else could be behind a caper involving a fire-breathing boar :)

Interesting prediction Kor. It will be fun to see how close you are.

Sczarni

I don't know about the goblin dog... It's been guessed multiple times, but I just don't see it as fitting the description of "a collection of 12 goblin minis"

Grand Lodge

I see Goblin Dogs as a part of the PF Goblins like Horses are to Humans. And since as I understand it, seven are repaints. And there are only six prior actual Goblin sculpts, then that leaves one. I doubt that the seventh sculpt will be from a future set. This would be a new sculpt then in my book. Again my guess is it is a Goblin Dog. I don't need more Goblin Dogs, but that will not stop me from buying at least one set of these miniatures.

wasn't the Gencon exclusive (that you got for free if you have the PFO kickstarter) supposed to be a new goblin? could that be the 7th sculpt?

I'm sorry, but if as a player I bought a random "get one of 12 randomly packaged humans" and pulled a horse, I would be pissed because I never got my human (my PC can't be a horse). Similarly as a DM, if I know an encounter has 4 goblins and I buy 4 from here and open them at home 2 minutes before starting the game andfind 2 goblin dogs without goblins, I wouldn't be happy.

Grand Lodge

Maybe Erik will reveal this week if a Goblin Dog is in the set or not. That would be nice to know one way or the other.

I get your point Cpt kirstov, and actually agree with it. But there is a difference between hope and reality. By buying the whole display set, one is almost assured of getting a complete set. So if a few are Goblin Dogs, I will not be upset. However, if I was just picking up a random booster, and inside was a Goblin Dog and not a Goblin, then yes I too would be disappointed. But I can't even begin to count the number of times I have been disappointed in this way when buying a random booster. In your example if the seller said there was a horse in the set, and you bought a random booster that happened to have a horse in it, then it is the luck of the draw when buying random boosters. The same would be true if there is a Goblin Dog in the set.

At least Paizo and Wizkids are working hard to allow case buyers an opportunity to get full sets. Back in the Dungeon & Dragons Miniatures days I would open a full case of boosters and still be missing a dozen or so miniatures. I would have to chase after the missing miniatures in the aftermarket to complete sets. So at least the current situation is better.

I agree Mazra, I'd have to say that wizkids/paizo have done a brilliant job on delivering sets to us. I'm also glad to see that a sculpt is a sculpt as Erik states, so I look forward to seeing the mystery 7th already-out-there goblin. I don't think it will be the goblin dog and are more inclined to the repainted Con exclusive - its an existing sculpt. I also hope either it or other new (non PC) sculpt is a pyro! Although I'd be more than happy with Vorka.

Grand Lodge

Does anyone have a picture of the Con exclusive? I am not familiar with it.

I'm trying to find the thread that originally reference the con-mini, as I thought it was indicated that it was a re-painted mini... but that could simply have been my interpretation. It is highly possible that the convention mini is a new sculpt that will also appear in this set. Of course if that is the case, does that make it count as an existing sculpt when the set comes out, or a new sculpt which would comprise of the unknown 5th sculpt?

Although I also do not want any more goblin dogs... we can't look at this set from the perspective of miniature collectors. If I was a non-collector and wanted to buy a set of goblins to throw some goblins foes at a party of adventurers, then having some goblin dogs would also be good to get due to their close affiliation.

Oohh.. how I love speculation. Erik, save us :)

Mazra wrote:

Unfortunately all attempts to get a spy cam installed over Erik's desk have failed. Despite the rumors, apparently interns really cannot be bribed with cookies.

Grand Lodge

So this Con-exclusive has not been released yet. Then I agree this would be a new sculpt. My bet is still on the Goblin Dog for actually being in the set. My hope is on a new Goblin Pyro.

Kor, you would have loved the times back in DDMs heyday when Maxmini and DDM Spoilers currently Plasticrypt would have hundreds of us speculating what minis were in the next set. These clever individuals would be scouring the web for early reveals from some obscure Chinese merchant or they were bribing interns at Wizards of the Coast for spoilers. It became an art and a badge of honor for the first to spoil some unknown mini yet to be announced by WotC.

Paizo and Wizkids have restored some of those good times. :)

Erik-

That is nice to hear. The alt decos are always a bit of a disapointment in one set. Here, where they are part of a concentrated set - they work out nice.

By the way, I read somewhere that these will be an 'evergreen' product, meaning the set will stay available in production for as long as demand exisits. Can you comment on that?

A con exclusive goblin? Whether it's a new sculpt or a repaint, it's yet another goblin to track down. I hope they make them available like the Festering Spirit after the convention. I just don't make it to the cons even though I know I would have a great time if I did.

And I like the idea of goblin dogs as part of a goblin set. Just as I like winter wolves as part of a frost giant set, dire bears as part of a stone giant set or spiders as part of a drow set. And especially since they come in matching rider and riderless versions. I'm betting the riderless goblin dog IS the seventh existing sculpt. And I really do hope the mystery new sculpt is bearing a torch. And is a common!

Speaking of horses, how many of you out there would be interested in a PC that came as several sculpts. One with a melee weapon at the ready, one firing a missile weapon, one mounted, and one of the mount by itself. You could even throw in an invisible version, flying version and for those sadistic gms a crumpled on the floor version.

WizKids has mentioned that possibility, but they don't have any details about what exactly that means at this time.

That is a nice thought for those of us who backed the kickstarter but can't go to Gen-Con.

I hope Eric isn´t ill or has drowned, so we´ll get the next preview on Friday 22nd.;-)
