The Kickstarter Chronicles

Monday, June 4, 2012

Since Paizo and Goblinworks first announced the Kickstarter project to fund a technology demo of the Pathfinder Online MMO game, one of the most common questions both on our forums and on the Kickstarter project page has been: how will this work with Pathfinder Society Organized Play?

Backers who pledge at least $15 will receive the PDF of Thornkeep, an all-new Pathfinder Roleplaying Game sourcebook written by industry superstar Rich Baker, containing not only a gazetteer of the River Kingdoms “hive of scum and villainy” that will play a prominent role in the online game, but also a massive dungeon with levels designed by Baker, Paizo Lead Designer Jason Bulmahn, Paizo Creative Director James Jacobs, and Paizo Publisher Erik Mona, and if the project nets $175,000, all levels of the dungeon will be included in the printed version of the book with an expanded page count.

And we plan to release Chronicle sheets to give Pathfinder Society characters venturing into the dungeons beneath Thornkeep an in-world benefit for surviving the dungeons within. The fact that all backers will have the opportunity to select the theme of each dungeon layer beyond the first means it’s a rare chance for Pathfinder Society GMs and players to help decide what adventures their PCs will take part in. And by backing the project, you ensure that you’ll have access to those levels when they’re released.

So make sure you check out the Kickstarter project, consider backing it, and spread the word to your fellow Pathfinder Society members. The project ends this week, so don’t wait. This is your chance to help make the Pathfinder Online game a reality, and decide the flavor of an all-star multilevel dungeon that promises to go down in Pathfinder history!

Have they just removed the limit on number of backers? I can't see any restriction except for the $250 pledges and up.

Yeah, I was refreshing watching the $100 rewards sell and then the limit just vanished. Good move. I think it has a great shot at $250,000 now.

And I'm in for $100

....I was only in for 30. And I cant afford to go 100. But by the entire Golarion Pantheon, I want to....

And if we hit $250,000, we'll be adding PDFs of the two Flip-Mats to the $30 reward level.

There's NO WAY I was going to bump from $75 to $100 just for a T-shirt.

But really, you had to throw in the chance for two flip-mats? My kryptonite! OK, have some MORE of my money...

Yeah, it's slightly embarassing to admit but I've started eyeing those top level pledges again. They'll be the most expensive flipmats ever if they push me over the edge.

The step up from $75 to $100 looks like quite a good deal, assuming you're interested in the incentives; a T-shirt and two flip-mats for $25 extra is going to push quite a few people up a tier.

In fact if you total up the (non-subscription, non-discounted) prices for a 96-page book, a T-shirt, two flip mats, and PDFs of the book and the maps that comes out at over $100, so the $100 level looks like the sweet spot.

<cries> my wife won't let me increase from $15... So sad. :( Ah well, I like drawing maps anyway.... :(

Now that is awesome :D

Scarab Sages

Considering we've raised over $40,000 today alone, and even smoked the original 24 amazing burst of donations, it looks like we will easily raise another 18,000 by 6pm tomorrow to raise the $250,000 for the flip mats.

This is positively amazing.!
Congratulations, and thank you, all!

Scarab Sages

I'm at 75 right now. Need to see what size t-shirts I can get before I decide to go to 100.

Scarab Sages

Michael ...
I mentioned this on the Kickstarter page for you, too:
Go ahead and make the bump to get the flip mats and tshirts. They've said they will email us something for choosing sizes.

$250,000 stretch goal achieved!

OMG I LOVE FLIPMATS! :-)

Grand Lodge 4/5

Payday is here at last, and I'm in.

Scarab Sages

Well ... we're closing down to the last two hours, now.
If numbers continue as they have for the last day or so, we'll likely finish up around $304,000 to $305,000.

Great drive, everyone! We're thrilled that each and every one of us could be a part of this!

Silver Crusade 2/5

I caved. I had to. I had to have that printed copy. If you are going to keep making such good stuff, I'll be broke!

I can't believe I waited until the last 90 minutes to cave in. I hate Paizo!

I pledged $100 and literally a few seconds later I get an email from Chris Self with my freelancer contract. Coincidence? I think not. Extortion I tell you! Extortion!

How much of your soul are you losing? And do you have any left to give?

Will the Thornkeep book and flip-mats be available for purchase in October when the signed copies are distributed to donors? Unfortunately, I was unable to buy into the Kickstarter. I literally couldn't afford it when it was available. I still can't. But in a few months, I may be able to.

Sczarni 4/5

They will most likely be available, but my guess is that it will be around the first of the year when it happens.

Liberty's Edge 1/5

Thornkeep MSRP: $24.99, according to this:

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I know some high ranking Paizo employee commented previously that the Thornkeep book, when made public, wouldnt be cheaper than it was during the Kickstarter, so they didnt undercut those who donated. But Im pretty sure you couldnt get a physical book for less than $50 on the donation, iirc anyway...

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

$24.99 is correct; you can preorder it here.

Those last two phrases are not equivalent; we only said the latter of the two: we won't undercut the value provided to Kickstarters. Remember, if you pledged $50 to the Kickstarter, you got the printed Thornkeep book, the Thornkeep PDF, the PDF of the Thornkeep Dungeon Flip-Mats), access to the Kickstarter-exclusive long-form Tech Demo video, and membership in the Goblin Squad.

The book is $24.99 and the two PDFs will be $17.99 each, so non-backers will pay more than $60 to purchase just the first three items. The only current way to get into the Goblin Squad right now is to win a particular contest mentioned in the latest Goblinworks blog; and the long-form video will remain exclusive to the Kickstarters. Also, the backers will get access to their PDFs later this month, while non-backers won't be able to buy them until January.
