Ultimate Equipment: What's Missing?

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Now that we’re wrapping up the last of the Advanced Race Guide, the design team is starting to work on Ultimate Equipment. This hardcover will cover all kinds of mundane and magical items for the Pathfinder RPG. As we have a little time before the text goes over to the editors, we’d like to give you one last chance to provide feedback for the book. Is there a kind of magic item that you’d like to see in this book? Is there an item category that’s lacking? Is there a class or game mechanic that is underrepresented in the item lists? Leave your feedback to this blog entry and we’ll see what else we can cram into the book!

Edit: Just to clarify, this book is basically a "shopping catalogue" of items fantasy adventurers may want to own and have a reasonable chance of purchasing. It isn't introducing any new rule systems or subsystems (such as legacy weapons), rework character wealth by level or the problems with the "big six" magic items, or introduce new magic item slots, new classes or archetypes, clarifications or expansions of the crafting or magic item pricing rules, castles and furniture, shift existing items to different slots, include magical equivalents of technological items (cell phones, portable stoves), items that duplicate or invalidate class abilities or feats, or futuristic weapons. We are adding new magic items to every single magic item slot. In particular, we'd like to know if there are any mundane items, weapons, or armor that fill a niche which isn't already covered in the game.

I would like to see an increase in alchemical items, as well as alchemical items of higher levels similar to magic items, with higher damage on splash weapons and higher save DC's with higher prices and craft DC's. I would also like more ammunition options both magical and alchemical for ranged characters.

I'll add a +1 to the kit ideas. Spycraft had a similar idea back in the day and it really made gameplay go smoother. I gather they extended this idea into Stargate but I never played that. I remember getting a mission brief and grabbing whatever kit seemed appropriate. Oh we need to go to the casino and out gamble the BBEG? I'll grab my espionage package in the leather attache case that has the tailored suit, light pistol, 3 button cameras, etc.

There's no reason a GM couldn't throw some of these together (and I think I will) but to have some pre built would be great.

I want something that enhances the monk's unarmed strike that's cheaper than the Amulet of Mighty Fists and can scale up higher than +5.

The AoMF is well priced for what it does, but it's overpriced for what the monk can get out of it.

+1. split the AoMF benefits for UAS and natural strikes into two amulets and adjust the prices accordingly.

more Magical Tattoos to be used with the Craft-Magical Tattoo item creation feat. Melee characters would like some love this time over the spell casters (Inner Sea World Guide)

I don't care how they do it, so long as they do it.

Since this is not closed I have some more...

A gauntlet that that by itself hasn't any magical attributes but can be upgraded with the weapon special abilities. After being upgraded the gauntlet doesn't have the abilities but the caster can add these abilities to their spells, spell-like abilities or supernatural abilities. When enhancements are made to attacks for spells that do not require an attack roll, only then the enhancement is added to the dc of the spell.

For example a druid can use gauntlet to make a +1 holy flame blade, or a wizard can make a fireball that has +1 to dc and has 1d6 shocking, or a sorcerer can make their claws +1 Unholy.

The second Item is a rod of spell hastening
-- It is like a rod of quicken spell but rather than making a spell a free action it makes the spell a move equivalent action and should cost a lot less than a quicken rod

I don't know how many Ideas make the cut but I totally consent, ask and almost beg you guys to use our ideas

Thank you

A larger portable hole and magical amenities to turn it into a portable blacksmiths shop, portable kitchen and dining room, portable cold/frozen storage for items that need to be kept refrigerated or frozen, and for a portable bedroom/getaway room. Oh and maybe a portable hole type portal keyed to an elemental plane. That would be perfect in certain situations. Just think of the countless uses for those portals.

Perhaps could you include a barter system? I would also like to see a silver system breakdown of currency as well as item prices broken down in cost based on availability in a region: Common, Uncommon, And Unique or Rare.

I.e. longsword. 15gp/20gp/25gp

Sovereign Court

Mundane clothing of all styles and races

Building costs like Inns Taverns, Brothel, Temple, Blacksmith shop, Brewery, etc

More ships types with pictures this time of the ships

The Exchange

More dwarven beer like from dwarves of Golarion. More world specific stuff.

as well as elven beer goggles

The Exchange

More commodities to be found in dungeons, that sell at price.

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Jars of vermin like those found in the The Devil We Know scenarios.

EDIT: A few examples would be peachy. Moths to create concealment, slugs to create a slippery surface, fireflys for a torch effect, and ...

I think this has already been mentioned but I'd like to see potion belts, wand/rod sheaths and scroll organizers that offer the same draw advantage as weapons (move action or combined with move action if character is moving and has a BAB of +1 or more).

Liberty's Edge

Furniture and other trappings and decroations for players who own castles, taverns, inns, houses, etc. Things like chairs, beds, tapestries and paintings and all sorts of stuff like that.

Remember, thieves like to steal stuff like that!

Traps, both mundane and magical. All sorts of traps that can be purchased and installed for castle/business/home defense.

If still possible to voice possible wants for the book..... new types of arrows and trick arrows. We have some provided from Elves of golarion, and even a few others from 3pp, and kobold quarterly. If you can, make the arrows possible through a core book, and make some new ones. Were still missing a grappling hook arrow, that's better than 30' range, and an actual fire arrow of some sort, plus broadhead arrows to do more damage. Just a thought.

Sadly I think it is a bit late to be asking for stuff. The book comes out next month so it is already at the printer.

Assuming this hasn't already been requested I think adamentine shields would make a great addition. It feels kind of odd having a character whose armor and weapons are made of adamentine but not his shield because adamentine shields don't exist.

I'm pretty sure an adamantine shield counts as a weapon price wise.

Also as DM said this book is probably way off at the printers already.....

Fair enough... would an adamentine shield grant any additional damage reduction though? Or would it just be like a weapon in that it ignores certain damage reduction and some hardness?

don't know if this is already in there or mentioned, but a better list of foods available in a bar or to buy--give some flavor to stopping in a bar instead of just "ale"

GameMastery Guide pp200-201:

Table 7-32: Unique Tavern Traits (e.g. haunted, run by five sisters, etc.)
Table 7-33: Random Tavern Name Generator (e.g. Six Kraken, Nag's Rack, etc.)
Table 7-34: Menu Items (e.g. hotch potch, stewed kidneys, etc.)
Table 7-35: Ameneties (e.g. lamps for loan, luxurious suites with servants, etc.)

ahh thank you much gbonehead. I guess I need to buy that book.

I realize it has been said above, but I'd like to add my vote to have something akin to the old armor/shield/weapon crystals. If that's perceived as too much of a rip-off, make them "badges" or "medallions" or whatever. This addresses (partially) the problem of wanting the ability to use several +1 type bonuses (depending on the expected situation) without having to build a (combined) +5 or higher weapon that can't be afforded. Since magical items can be swapped out of body slots, it makes sense to me that magical enhancements can be swapped out of armors/shields/weapons.

To "fully" address the bonus issue, I'd like to see crystals (or badges or whatever) be treated like wands in the sense that ANY enchantment may be placed within a crystal (instead of having specific crystals). Doing so could certainly incur a REASONABLE additional fee (for the flexibility). This could be either a flat fee (my preference - say, for the cost of the crystal) or a SMALL (less than half) percentage modifier.

The book is already out, no need to tell them what you want. It's too late.

Personally I'd like to vote *against* anything at ALL like weapon or armor crystals. What a way to make magic weapons not feel special and feel more like a big pile o' cheese.

Sconded. They were just a means of getting extra properties cheaper. Cheesy and not in a good way.

Liberty's Edge

It's missing stat boosting items other slots then belts and headbands.

That might have something to do with the fact that they specifically consolidated all the stat boosting items to those slots.

Indeed. Magic items feel much more special when you're forced to throw your old ones in the garbage or sell them to the Salvation Army whenever you get a better one, instead of adding improvements to your old favourites.

Well at least they should adjusted the price so it's not hurting MAD then SAD.

What's missing? Volume 2 :)

The Salvation Army must be one seriously hard bunch of warriors in your game worlds, Hogarth, if they are armed with adventurer's cast-off gear! I just have mental images of the Salvation Army band with the tuba-player delivering sonic blasts and the batton of the conductor being a wand of fireballs or a rod of wonder...
