It's no secret I love adventures first and foremost, and the upcoming Pathfinder Module: Cradle of Night is one of the highlights of my first year at Paizo. This adventure was crafted by several of Paizo's veteran contributors: James Jacobs, Wes Schneider, Neil Spicer, and Greg Vaughan. Don't let the multiple authors fool you into thinking this is a collection of stories—it's a single super-adventure with a stunning beginning and a desperate urgency all the way to the end. Cradle of Night was a long time coming, but it's all the better for it, and now it's here!

In this deluxe adventure for 8th-level characters, the heroes receive a plea from a desperate caligni refugee. Her cosmopolitan subterranean city of Lyrudrada has fallen into the grip of a fanatical cult called the Reborn. This wicked cult seeks an artifact called the Cradle of Night, an important piece of caligni history and lore. The heroes must keep the artifact out of the cult's hands and fight to bring light to the shadows that threaten to consume them.

One of the reasons I was glad to jump in on this project—apart from it being an exciting adventure into new lands and themes—is the opportunity to address the name and history of the caligni. There's an unfortunate trend in fantasy fiction to equate "dark" with "evil," and the "dark folk" monsters have been carrying this baggage for years. Of course, these subterranean people don't call themselves "dark folk;" they call themselves "caligni," and since they're at the center of this adventure, it's a great time to pull back the shadows around their naming, history, and secret lore.

Venture into the depths of the earth and claim the Cradle of Night!

Ever since finishing the sanctioning documents for the Giantslayer and Iron Gods Adventure Paths back in January, Linda and I have had our hands full preparing for PaizoCon and Gen Con. We're thrilled to have delivered a huge number of new scenarios, and it's even more exciting to enter this comparably relaxed time of the year in which we can catch up on old business. You may have noticed Linda over the last week appearing in countless discussion threads to offer clarifications and then disappear in a cloud of ebullient nosoi psychopomps. I've been wrangling authors, outlining a bunch of new scenarios, and sending out new assignments; keep an eye out for new product pages soon (and see below for a list of upcoming scenarios, should you need information for planning upcoming conventions).

Upcoming Scenarios

Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-04: Wardens of Sulfur Gulch (Tier 7-11)

Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-05: Ungrounded but Unbroken (Tier 1-5)

Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-06: Reaping What We Sow (Tier 1-5)

Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-07: From the Tome of Righteous Repose (An experimental Tier 3-7)

Together, though, we're sanctioning a massive number of Modules and Adventure Paths. Today I'd like to share the first of many: Pathfinder Module: Feast of Dust and Pathfinder Module: Ire of the Storm! You can find the sanctioning documents on their respective product pages.

Illustrations by Tomasz Chistowski and Sally Gottschalk

Ire of the Storm skipped ahead in line a bit largely because we want to prioritize sanctioning low-level material in the organized play campaign. Don't worry though, as we're busily looking ahead to The House on Hook Street, Down the Blighted Path, and Gallows of Madness. We've also queued the Adventure Paths Hell's Rebels, Curse of the Crimson Throne, and Strange Aeons for attention, and after those, Serpent's Skull, Kingmaker, and Council of Thieves are all eagerly waiting their turns to provide hundreds of hours of additional content to the campaign. At this point, we haven't dug into Hell's Vengeance deeply enough to know quite if or how it might fit into the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild; if anything, it'll likely be one we sanction in "campaign mode" only. Finally, I have the pleasure of reading more Pathfinder Tales novels and have nearly finished Hellknight, meaning I'm almost done writing the Volume 8 sanctioning Chronicle sheet.

That covers a lot of what's currently missing, but it does leave out one noteworthy absence: the Pathfinder Society Open Call. You may have noticed that we have a new Pathfinder Society landing page and that much of our campaign information got rearranged just before Gen Con. I'm taking this as an opportunity to revise the Open Call guidelines and add in some more advice I've learned from looking over past entries. My projection is that it will still be a 2,000-word (or less) quest, so if you're in the middle of preparing your own submission based on past guidelines, it's fairly unlikely you'll need to make any significant changes. I do, however, advise not sending in new submissions during this short hiatus, as I'll be reading any submissions I've received since August 1, 2016 with these new guidelines in mind. Once the Open Call is all spruced up, expect to see a blog announcing that it's back in action.

Last year I competed in the Paizo's RPG Superstar contest, and earlier this week I saw my complete winning adventure. It was humbling to see my first design work become reality. Roleplaying games are an integral part of my daily and family life. I play Pathfinder at least once a week, sometimes with friends, my children, complete strangers—I love to game! I love the social aspects of gathering around a table to share in the group storytelling experience. We explore, we laugh, we fight, we are a party, and we are together. As gamers we experience things outside our everyday lives, see places that exist in our collective imaginations. We get to be "not ourselves."

Winning RPG Superstar introduced me to a new aspect of my favorite hobby. I created a space for gamers to explore Nar-Voth and discover new things about themselves (should gamers follow those threads). One of the most important parts of the design process was finding places to include roleplaying solutions in addition to combat solutions. Creating believable NPCs was both fun and challenging. My favorite characters to create were the three "big bad" encounters. The personalities and relationships between Zohir and her underlings were crucial to giving options to players for dealing with the encounters. For each NPC, I created files of real and fictional people and relationships, created musical soundtracks, and for a few, I had specific perfumes that I wore when I wrote their scenes to help me focus and round out NPCs that could have ended up moustache twirling villains. Even now when I wear some of them I'm put in the frame of mind of Zohir and Delbera. (Editor's Note: Apparently Lady Delbera is Vétiver Fatal. We leave it up to you, dear readers, to convince Monica to share the rest!)

For Evil to be Victorious, it Needs Good Help!

Evil is insidious, it's not always the person stabbing you in the face repeatedly, but instead, it's the person whispering honeyed words into your ears. You've all been victim to it. I've seen you lot, swayed by the promises of the occult or tales of black markets. The crafter of those words was quite skilled. It's my understanding that her hand helped guide the words that fill the tome of which I am to speak.

What am I here to discuss? I'm here to talk about evil. Specifically, I'm here to talk about Pathfinder Player Companion: Agents of Evil.

The noblest of soul, or the most depraved mind, can willingly walk the path of service to an evil power. It's important to note that such bondage does not inherently turn one into a force for evil. In this guide, you'll read about bad beginnings, sad stories, and monstrous motivations.

For those of you without a maligned past or similarly dark ambitions, there are evil patrons aplenty—from the Aspis Consortium to the Whispering Way—who willingly seek agents to do their bidding. For those of you with a more religious bent, the fouler gods of Golarion have much to offer. Even those less vile followers of such deities are given their fair respect in this book. Asmodeus too takes his rightful place here, and for those of you foolish enough to combat the rightful rule of House Thrune, you may find yourself interested in hearing about the Devil Impostors—summoners whose eidolons imitate the traits of hellspawn.

All can benefit from the knowledge on fighting the supposed 'forces of good'. Learn strategies to employ against agathions, angels, archons, and azatas alike—most certainly useful for those battling the rising rabble of the Glorious Reclamation.

Contained within the intricate script of this tome are poisons of the foulest sort, with additional necrotoxins—whose sort you've likely learned of from Golarion's black markets. Even the more misunderstood races can learn some skill in service to evil powers, from fetchling magi clouding the vision of their enemies, to tiefling alchemists brewing bombs of pure hellfire.

Ah... it appears I may be telling you too much, and our time is growing short.

Luckily, there's far too many magic items and spells to adequately describe in this place. I could discuss the withershot muskets, crafted by the servants of the daemonic harbinger Cixyron. Or perhaps you'd like to hear of the Aspis Consortium's success with the aboleth-designed ioun spite bracers.

Interested?

Well, I suppose I could tantalize you with the necromantic spell blood tentacles that does... well, it does exactly what you might expect.

Sadly, there's just too much to talk about in a place such as this.

Except... Well, I wouldn't be properly evil without mentioning one last seductive item from this volume of inequity. The insinuator is an antipaladin archetype that purely embodies a path of pure self-interest. These paragons of self shun bonding with a single deity, instead living an existence bartering with any power that seems likely to grant them the power needed to meet their own goals.

Now I must go. But before I do, I must thank Crystal Frasier and Owen K.C. Stephens for the opportunity to work on this book. If anything, I am truly an agent of their far-reaching evil.
