Over the past year, Society GMs and players opened their hearts (and wallets) in support of other people. While the reasons varied from sick children to cancer research to wounded service members to animal shelters, the generosity of our community didn't waver. Thank you and a huge round of applause to all the organizers on the list for the extra effort it takes to include a charity component in your event. Through the efforts of your labors and the generosity of your players, someone's day brightened.

Below is a list of all conventions that submitted requests for convention support from Nov 2017 through October 2018. This doesn't include the smaller events that may have had a charity component, but not reached the 15-table minimum needed for event support. Colorado Springs, CO, hosted the most charity events with 3 apiece. Looking at the regional standings, we had a three-way tie between Great Lakes, Northeast, and Western Eurasia-Middle East with 9 events each. Again, thank you to all the organizers listed below for their time and energy in support of their chosen charities!

Extra Life

Two years ago, several Pathfinder Society lodges supported Extra Life events independent of each other . Last year, Paizo engaged directly in fundraising for Extra Life through live play events hosted at our offices and available via a 25-hour Twitch stream. The Paizo efforts were in addition to Society Lodges hosting Extra Life events throughout the end of October and early November.

This year, the Organized Play team decided to support Extra Life by releasing world-wide benefits to any convention running between now and November 12, provided the monies raised from the charity component go to the Extra Life campaign.

The benefits include:

Retail Incentive Program status regardless of having a retail presence at the convention.

Access to the charity boons Hubris Coil (PFS), Lucky Knuckles (PFS), Manticore Starship (SFS), Skittermander (SFS). One boon from each program may be requested. Email organizedplay@paizo.com with the choices for your convention and for guidelines on how to report boon winners.

Purchasable d20 rerolls - you may pay $10 for an additional reroll and $1 to bump the result up 1. So for $30, you may have a guaranteed "20". These rerolls are not limited to 1 per game and stack with rerolls from other sources. You still must choose to use a reroll before results are announced.

If an event is already registered to Extra Life, please post your link via social media or on the Extra Life post in the Pathfinder Society forums. If an event wishes to take advantage of the benefits above and isn't registered, either register a page or join us at Team Paizo. To register as part of Team Paizo, visit our Team Page and click join. If you don't have any Extra Life events near you but you wish to donate, you can visit the team page and donate to any team member.

Thank you to everyone who donated to Paizo's 2018 team for the Gauntlet charity tournament. Team Paizo fought hard in Tak, but a catastrophic Valeria round tumbled us towards the bottom, and we clawed our way back up to 11th, and almost as high as 8th, with an awesome performance on the final Puzzle Hunt round. Thanks to all of you, including an incredible last-minute donation over $1,000, we also unlocked an astonishing number of blog segments revealing further secrets about previously blogged classes. This will be a monster-length blog, so strap in for a long ride!

Fighter Combos: Randyll and Solveig
Luis Loza

I've always been a big fan of martial characters, which was fully solidified by one of my favorite characters, who happened to be a fighter. One of the big things I love about the fighter in Pathfinder is his ability to do just about anything in combat. With the right set of feats, a fighter can be anything from a typical sword and shield-wielding knight, to a spear master who leaps across the battlefield to defend his allies, to a light-footed master of the rapier. When I got a chance to join one of the playtest games here in the office, my first thought was to put this new fighter to the test. A lot of it felt the same, as the fighter was gaining lots of feats, but it turns out there was much more to the fighter this time around.

The Fighter Class Preview previewed several fighter feats and class features, but one thing it didn't mention was fighters' ability to string together attacks to make powerful combinations. They do this through abilities that let them Fan attack or press the offensive—abilities with the open trait must come before any other attacks, and those with the press trait must come after you've already made an attack. Fighters can also enter stances, which are one of the most common types of open abilities, and grant various powerful benefits for the duration of the encounter or until you enter another stance. A bastard sword switch-hitter can appreciate the debuff potential of following up an Intimidating Strike (which is neither an open nor a press ability) with Shatter Defenses, a press ability that stacks various penalties on an intimidated foe, or Combat Grab, a press ability that uses your open hand to grab a foe and simultaneously attack with the weapon in the other hand. Between those options and your ability to make your opponents flat-footed with critical hits, you can significantly reduce the AC of monsters so your lower-accuracy allies can take them down. With all of these new abilities in mind, I created my first fighter, Randyll. He was a master of the bastard sword with a penchant for yelling and rushing into combat. He would use the versatility of his bastard sword to his advantage, switching between a one-handed grip and a two-handed grip to use whichever feat was best for the situation, granting him a surprising amount of versatility.

Unfortunately, due to his recklessness, Randyll was not long for Golarion. In his place, I created Solveig, an Ulfen shield maiden entirely dedicated to defending her allies. She's fared even better. A shield fighter with a flail is all about careful tactical placement on the battlefield. If you're standing in the right spot, you can block for your allies with Shield Warden, and the flail critical specialization effect of knocking enemies prone can keep enemies right where you want them, even on an open battlefield. With Shielded Stride, you can even Stride at half speed with your shield up, ignoring reactions that trigger off your movement. The Shield Paragon stance is an open ability that gives you the benefit of a raised shield for the rest of the battle, an extremely powerful advantage. Solveig is a complete shift from Randyll's combat style. Her movement is calculated and her defense is unmatched (at least by the rest of the party!). By the time she had avoided close to 10 attacks in a row, I was in love with the fighter. I had found that same feeling that I had in Pathfinder First Edition and I could tell that there were so many possibilities with different weapons, armor types, and of course, all the new fighter feats. But there are so many amazing feats—how can your fighter take all the ones he wants? And how do you make sure you have the one you need for the day's adventure? The fighter's 9th-level Flexibility feat grants a different feat each day, and that increases to two flexible feats with Improved Flexibility at 15th level. This also means that, counting those two flexible feats, fighters have the most class feats in the game! Let me just say that playing the fighter in the playtest has only further solidified my love for the class. The fighter is awesome and continues to be awesome in Pathfinder Second Edition. In fact, if I were told I could play only fighters for the duration of the playtest, I would be happy. There's so much the fighter can do that I don't see myself running out of ideas any time soon!

Cleric Domains of the Mox Gauntlet
Andrew White

Thanks so much to everyone who helped us get this far! Your generosity is hugely appreciated, and we did our best to represent you accordingly at this weekend's showdown. And as a special reward to those of you who made your donations in the name of Team Cleric, here's a sneak peek at more of what's coming for everyone's favorite energy channelling, undead-neutralizing, wound-healing bludgeon enthusiasts!

If the Mox Gauntlet was a deity, what domains would it have? A gauntlet is a symbol of Might, the donations are a form of Wealth, the charity this year helps Families, and each year there's usually a final round shrouded in Secrecy. So let's talk about the domain powers that a cleric of the Gauntlet might be able to cast. The Cleric Class Preview already included unity, but the Family domain also has the basic power soothing words, which dispels emotion effects on a target; this is actually extremely strong because as a power, it's always heightened to your highest possible level. This means it's quite tricky to keep up emotion effects on a Family cleric's allies, and you'll probably never need to prepare remove fear. Might has two options that are really good for heavily armored and high-Strength clerics. The basic power athletic exploit lets you ignore your armor's check penalty and movement speed reduction when you really need to, and enduring might is a reaction that reduces damage based on your Strength modifier and your cleric level. The Secrecy domain has forced quiet, which limits the target's voice to a hoarse whisper, making it much harder to raise an alarm. Even a successful save against forced quiet still affects the target for 1 round (though the effect might last as long as 10 minutes on a critical failure!). Secrecy's advanced domain power, safeguard secret, has a 1-minute casting time but thereafter grants you and all willing allies in range an enormous conditional bonus to skill checks (almost always Deception) to conceal a specific secret you pick, and to saving throws against spells that seek to ferret out that specific secret. These benefits last indefinitely until you use the spell again. Finally, Wealth's basic power, acquisitive's fortune, is sure to make you popular with every business owner in the city and with allies who like to make money during downtime. Once cast, it allows the target to reroll any critical failure on their check to Perform a Trade in the next 24 hours. As the name implies, it's a fortune effect. The domain's advanced power, money talks, allows you to substitute coin currency for any sort of cost with a value measured in monetary value. So for instance, if you needed a vase worth 100 gp, you could just use 100 gp. This is particularly handy when you're away from a settlement and suddenly need a bizarre item for a cost that you wouldn't have thought to bring along; the Wealth cleric has you covered.

The Rogue's Hidden Tricks
Katina Davis

Although I'm not particularly stealthy in real life, I've always enjoyed rogues and their stealthy ways because I figured they were most like how I would actually behave in an adventure setting. Instead of barreling headfirst into a fight and counting on being able to chug a bunch of potions afterward, the rogue is more calm, calculated, and precise. What's the point in drawing attention (and attacks) to yourself when you can tiptoe in, get the job done, and sneak away unscathed? Never let your opponents know how strong you are, and they will always underestimate you.

Even after the Rogue Class Preview, the rogue was hiding some of her sneakiest tricks. What did you expect? One thing about the rogue that's different than in Pathfinder First Edition is the rogue's focus on slippery mental defenses. In addition to the Cognitive Loophole feat mentioned in her preview blog, the rogue gains the slippery mind ability, which makes her a master at Will saves. Add in double debilitation, the ability to apply two debilitations to a foe at once, and you have a good sense of the rogue's odd-level features. But there are so many feats still hiding in the shadows. While the first blog focused on ways to get sneak attack, the rogue also has some fun ways to play with the action economy, including drawing and attacking with a weapon as a single action, or Stepping and Striking at a -1 penalty with the same action (in either order, perfect for flanking, entering reach, or forcing your foe to take an action to reach you). The rogue also has a pair of feats that allow her to poison weapons more easily, keep her poisons from being wasted, and create a bunch of doses of a very simple poison for free each day (this also works great with an alchemist on the team to make some really powerful poison for free every day). For those interested in traps, you can gain Trap Finder, which makes finding even the most devious traps easier and protects you against them, and Delay Trap, which can give you the time you need to escape the area when you accidentally set off a trap. However, unlike in Pathfinder First Edition, engaging with traps as a rogue is your choice.

All right, those feats were cool, but what about some high-level options? Sense the Unseen is a reaction you can use when you Seek that lets you automatically learn the location of unseen creatures in the area, no matter how well they were hidden. You still can't see them, but it's a good start! Cloud Step allows you to step so lightly that you are essentially weightless when you are Striding, allowing you to walk over water or air and avoiding pressure plates until you finish moving. Perfect Distraction allows you to use smoke and mirrors, decoys, and other tactics to make it seem like you are somewhere you aren't, perfect for leaving a decoy right after you hide. If you have Legendary Deception, you can even gain Reactive Distraction and use the decoy as a reaction to avoid an enemy's attack or other ability. Afterward, it takes a bit of time to set up your next decoy, but it's worth it! Trickster's Ace lets you jury-rig magic item resonance and stolen magical energy to set up your own magical contingency each day, similar to the spell. And finally, Hidden Paragon lets you go completely invisible, even beyond the sight of true seeing, see invisibility and the like and impossible to outline with even glitterdust, faerie fire, or similar magic!

Take That, Evil!
Mark Seifter

The Paladin Class Preview was centered around alignment and the paladin code, with some extra helpings of spells, healing, and defenses, but there's more to paladin options than that. Sometimes you just want to put on your Gauntlet and beat evil down. So, this section is all about offense. Retributive Strike, first mentioned in the paladin blog, is a good way to add onto your damage while enfeebling enemies that dare to attack your allies, and all paladins have access to it at 1st level. Another ability all paladins receive is the righteous ally, a holy spirit that assists you from 3rd level on. There are three righteous allies to choose from (and you can take the Second Ally feat to gain another): blade, shield, and mount. Naturally, the blade righteous ally is the most offense-focused of the three, inhabiting your weapon (which you are free to change each day), and giving it the benefits of a property rune for the whole day. This starts with some simple properties like disrupting and ghost touch, but you can use feats to gain the benefits of more powerful runes; for instance, you can make your weapon dancing, allowing the spirit in your blade to attack on its own. The first major blade righteous ally feat is Blade of Justice, which is parallel to the Pathfinder First Edition paladin's smite evil—you declare a target to face judgment and deal extra damage to evil foes. Although Blade of Justice deals less damage than smite evil, it can be used as many times as you like as long as you have the actions for it. And the real kicker is that this extra damage is good damage, which means that creatures like fiends that are weak against good abilities are going to take a lot more damage.

Speaking of how offense-focused paladins can wreck fiends, there's also Aura of Faith, a feat that makes nearby good allies' first attacks each turn deal 1 extra good damage against evil creatures (and of course, this can become quite a bit higher when applying a fiend's weakness!). But there's also a smiting ability every paladin gets that can ruin a fiend's day. Holy Smite deals persistent good damage equal to your Charisma modifier to evil creatures you hit with any Retributive Strike, which can apply extra damage round after round if the creature has a weakness to good. Instrument of Zeal is the last in the series of badass offensive abilities for the blade righteous ally: when you score a critical hit with your weapon, either with a Retributive Strike or against your Blade of Justice target, you gain an additional die of damage and the target is slowed 1 on its next turn, which can put it in a really tight spot! There's another fun way every paladin can increase a party's offense, particularly if the group stands in a tactical formation. Aura of justice is a class feature all paladins get that allows you to take a penalty to any Retributive Strike in order to allow all allies within 10 feet and in reach of the monster to make Retributive Strikes of their own! If you find your group often uses this to create a mega-chain reaction, you can later take the Aura of Vengeance feat to remove that extra penalty when you use aura of justice.

Behold the Gauntlet!

The Gauntlet is a powerful magic item fought over by champions since ages long past. We will now reveal the powers of the Gauntlet in a Pathfinder Playtest-compatible form. Behold, the Gauntlet!

The Gauntlet Item 18

This mighty adamantine gauntlet was forged by the legendary artisans of Mox from the Card Kingdom and is inscribed with hidden runes of great power. The Gauntlet boosts your might and enhances your strategy to a razor's edge. You gain a +5 item bonus to Athletics checks and Warfare Lore checks. When you invest the Gauntlet, you either increase your Strength score by 2 or increase it to 18, whichever would give you a higher score.

While wearing the Gauntlet, you gain a +2 conditional bonus to damage rolls on unarmed attacks against minotaurs.

When you activate the Gauntlet, you slam the ground, creating the same effects as an 8th-level earthquake.

While you have invested the Gauntlet, if anyone offers you a challenge for the Gauntlet and the challenge is fair, you must accept that challenge, though you can finish any life-threatening or time-critical task before doing so. Once someone has won the Gauntlet from you in a challenge, you must wait 1 year before you can challenge them again to regain the Gauntlet. If the Gauntlet is stolen, sold, traded, looted from a corpse, or obtained in any way other than being won in a fair challenge, it vanishes instead, perhaps returning to the vaults of Mox.

A Familiar Disguise

Familiars, the traditional fuzzy friends of wizards and witches, are extremely popular in Pathfinder, especially among those who are fans of animals or cute things. While many classes gained access to familiars in later books, including the archetypes I wrote for Familiar Folio (my first-ever author credit for Paizo), plenty of characters have access to familiars from the outset of Pathfinder Second Edition's playtest. Not only can wizards take a feat to gain a familiar even if they also have an arcane bond, but alchemists can also gain an alchemically created familiar, and druids can gain a leshy familiar. But the most surprising and awesome feature might send our fans who love both gnomes and familiars (hmm, who could that be?) into a spiral of gnomes: there is a gnome ancestry feat to gain a familiar regardless of your class.

So enough about who can get familiars—how do they work? As someone who loves building familiars and getting exactly the type of animal that fits my concept, I was sometimes stymied when my ability to choose a familiar was locked behind how many low-power creatures that would be useful mostly only as familiars could be fit into the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary schedule. In the playtest, you won't have to wait for Bestiary 5 to have a flying fox. Familiars have always been magical creatures forever altered by your magic, so why not capitalize on that to allow for more variety and flexibility than ever before?

In the playtest's familiar system, you get to pick from a variety of powers that either allow the familiar to gain special abilities, like flight or speech (yes, you can have a talking cat, or a talking winged cat) or that grant special benefits to you, including extra spells and delivering your touch spells at a distance. You can normally swap those powers each day as part of your daily preparations, which allows you some awesome flexibility for your familiar, though a familiar that would naturally have any of these special abilities (like an owl's flight) always has that ability locked in. So if you need your rabbit to be able to swim for the next day's adventure, you can do that, or you can grant your leshy wings of flower blossoms. For the playtest, we started with around 10 different powers, but I imagine the list will expand over time and we might create feats for familiar-friendly characters to gain more powers than usual or to unlock particularly strong powers.

So we know about powers, but what about a familiar's base statistics? Your familiar uses your full saving throw modifiers and AC, with a set 4 HP per level, so it has better defenses than familiars had before. Familiars are adept at Perception, Acrobatics, and Stealth, counting as trained characters of your level and adding your spellcasting key ability modifier (this is Charisma if you have only innate spells, like the aforementioned gnome non-spellcaster). For other skills, they have the modifier of an untrained character of your level, meaning that after a few levels, their skills are far beyond what a simple animal could achieve.

Whew, that was an epic-length blog. Thanks again to everyone who donated to the Gauntlet to support Wellspring in their efforts to assist the homeless, and if you liked how much content was in this blog, be sure to post and thank all the donors as well!

Two years ago, the brave forces of Paizo took the field of battle, fighting off skilled foes sent by other game companies from around Seattle to claim the Gauntlet, a fabled prize of glory and power. When the dust settled, we were victorious. The Gauntlet was ours!

Last year, we once again took the field, raising money for charity, fending off an even greater field of contenders. It was a day of hard fought battles and although we fought valiantly, we were defeated. The team from the Removed From Play podcast had cast us down into ruin. They took the Gauntlet from us.

Now, the time has come once again. We go to do battle in less that two weeks and we need your help to once again battle for the Gauntlet. You can help by donating to the Gauntlet charity in the name of Paizo (or by selecting one of the individual team members). The more money we raise, the more "power ups" we will get during the event to help us win! A lot of the other teams have gotten a bit of a head start on us this year, but we are confident you will help to see us through. The team for this year has seen some changes as well, adding fresh blood to our stable of champions. While Erik Mona and I will be returning, we are happy to add Katina Davis (Customer Service Representative) and Jason Keely (Editor) to the Gauntlet team.

Go and, select a team member and donate today! Every little bit helps and it all goes to support YouthCare, a great charity that helps homeless kids!

Last year, we promised a short dungeon adventure as a reward for helping us with the tournament and we have not forgotten about this commitment. Although our responsibilities at Paizo have delayed us, I am happy to announce that the adventure is currently going through editing and will be available for FREE in just a few weeks. Take a look at the awesome map for this exciting adventure!

Victory For Paizo! Victory For The Kids!

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

The Gauntlet was awarded on Sunday, and with your help, Paizo brought home this mighty trophy! Sponsored by Card Kingdom, the Gauntlet tournament featured competitors from a wide array of local game companies and groups. Funds raised by all of the teams went to support Child's Play, a charity that donates games and toys to sick kids in hospitals around the world. On top of furthering such a great cause, donations also earned each team a number of "Power Ups" to use during the event, granting an edge against the opposition.

And let me tell you: the competition was fierce! Before the tournament even started, the team from the Removed From Play podcast surged into the lead, raffling off an amazing Warmachine army. We fought back, but in the end, neither of our teams were prepared for Bungie's fundraising juggernaut. Raising over $6,000 in just the last few days before the competition, they earned the top spot, which came with 5 bonus points and a mountain of power ups to use during the event.

Fundraising alone, however, would not win you The Gauntlet.

As the clock struck 3pm, the battle was joined. I sat down to play Magic against one member of each other team, while Stephen played Ticket to Ride and Erik and Jessica proved their superiority in geek trivia. Both Stephen and I did well, earning a total of 13 points for our team, but Erik and Jessica dominated at trivia, earning 20 points! Stephen then joined Erik and Jessica to play Ugg-tect, a game in which the players take on the role of caveman architects trying to construct monuments using only grunts and body language. They built well, but in the end, we earned only 8 points from the game.

We had a total of 41 points, but that was only enough for 2nd place. The Removed From Play team was hot on our heels with 40, while Bungie held the lead with 42. Before the final game, the winners of the best costume were announced and Bungie pulled even further ahead (to 47) with their excellent Doctor Horrible ensemble. The final game was Suspend, a game in which you must balance wire playing-pieces on a precarious pole. The first team to hang all of their pieces would earn 20 points, but the other teams would earn points too, depending on how fast they could finish their game. We were in trouble. We not only needed to win the final game, but we needed to win by a wide margin to overcome the 6-point lead Bungie had built.

As the countdown reached zero, each team went into a flurry of building. If a piece fell, you lost a team member, meaning that you had to be fast, but steady. As Erik, Jessica, Stephen, and I began to rapidly put together our sculpture, we could not help but keep an eye on Bungie, who were just next to us on the same table. Our practice paid off. We had played Suspend for a few hours earlier that week, becoming skilled at building rapidly, but also figuring out the best way to make the structure stable. As a team, we shouted "JUDGE" as our last piece came to rest. We were first, but it was not over yet. If Bungie came in second, they would earn enough points to claim The Gauntlet. We waited, watching the other teams intently. Then Removed From Play finished their game.

We had done it. The Gauntlet was ours!

We had a great time participating in The Gauntlet. It was a hard-fought battle, but everyone was very friendly and good-natured. After all, the real winner this day was the children. The Paizo team would like to thank all of the other teams for a truly awesome time and a great competition: Bungie, Café Mox Regulars, Card Kingdom, GeekGirlCon, Lady Planeswalkers, Penny Arcade, Removed From Play, Sucker Punch, and Wizards of the Coast. Special thanks go out to everyone at Card Kingdom who spent countless hours setting up this fantastic event. We look forward to defending our title (and The Gauntlet itself) next year!

You can watch a video of the entire event at this link over on The Gauntlet page. The final event starts at around 3:17:30 and you can hear the Paizo team call for a judge at around 3:20:00. You can also catch The Gauntlet being presented at around 3:40:00.

Of course, now that we have The Gauntlet, we thought it only appropriate to show you how it has made life better for us around the Paizo offices (and beyond!).

Finally, we had a wide variety of awards to give you, the fans, for helping us reach certain funding goals during the event. On Friday, we posted a Primitive Human Race for use in your Pathfinder games. We also promised a number of spoilers from the upcoming Advanced Class Guide. You can find some of the spoilers in this thread, but the rest are posted below.

In the playtest for the Advanced Class Guide, the new classes were called hybrid classes, since each is a mix of two parent classes. In the playtest, you could not take levels in either of the parent classes if you had levels in the hybrid class. In the final version, we removed this restriction.

The Shaman's spell list changed several times during the playtest. In the final version, we gave the class its own unique spell list to better suit its theme. This includes a number of spells drawn from the cleric list, the druid list, and the witch list, but it also includes a number of brand new spells found in the book.

The Skald got access to a few more powers from its parent classes, including versatile performance and uncanny dodge. It also got a few new songs that it can use in place of its raging song, such as the song of the fallen. Check it out!

Song of the Fallen (Su): At 14th level, a skald can temporarily revive dead allies to continue fighting, with the same limitations as raise dead. The skald selects a dead ally within 60 feet and expends 1 round of raging song to bring that ally back to life. The revived ally is alive but staggered. Each round, the skald may expend another 1 round of raging song to keep that ally alive for another round. The ally automatically dies if the skald ends this performance or is interrupted. The skald may revive multiple allies with this ability (either at the same time or over successive rounds) but must expend 1 round of raging song per revived ally per round to maintain the effect.

There are a wide variety of great options for every character in this book, from archetypes to feats, spells, and magic items. Just to give you a taste, here is one of the more interesting spells in the book.

Path of Glory

School conjuration (healing); Level bard 2, cleric 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range touch (see text)
Area four 5-ft. squares/level (see text)
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

You cause four 5-foot squares (one of which must be your space) to glow with dim illumination. Starting on your next turn, as a swift action you can extend the glowing area by an additional four 5-foot squares; each new square must be adjacent to a square that was previously glowing. Allies that end their turns on a glowing square (including one who falls unconscious in the square) are healed of 1 point of damage.

Well, that about wraps up our coverage of The Gauntlet.

Wait... what's that?

Stephen wants to say something about me needing to get punched with the Gauntlet. That sounds like a nasty rumor. I am sure nothing like that would happen within the next few weeks for all of you to watch. I am sure of it. Anyway, I want to thank all of you who helped make this victory possible. Look for The Gauntlet to make a number of appearances in this blog over the coming year. We are looking forward to defending our title next year, hopefully allowing us to keep this mighty trophy. We know that you will be here to support us!

I can truly say that the team was astounded when you helped us raise over $2000 in a single day for The Gauntlet charity tournament event coming up on May 18th. With that, we have earned a number of "power ups" that are going to help us in the tournament to claim The Gauntlet. Alas, the fight is not over yet!

In the past few days, we've seen our competition enter the fray, getting a mountain of donations. One in particular, has surged past us! While we commend them for helping to raise money for Child's Play, we still want to beat them and show that Paizo fans are some of the most awesome and charitable fans in the world!

To that end, we've decided to announce some special goals, to help raise some more money for this event! If we raise the following totals, we will unlock the goals and give everyone some awesome rewards! Check out these exciting funding goals!

$3,000—Caveman Reward: In honor of Ugg-tect, one of the games we will be playing in which the participants are caveman architects, we will put together a free PDF of a "caveman" humanoid race for use in your Pathfinder games.

$4,000—Card Game Reward: We will release a PDF featuring the Gauntlet team members as new Ally cards compatible with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

$5,000—Audio Reward: We will put together a "dramatic reading" of a chapter from one of our Pathfinder Tales novels, featuring members of the Paizo staff as the characters.

In addition to these great rewards, at $2,500, $3,500 and every $1,000 dollars thereafter I will post up some tantalizing spoilers from the upcoming Advanced Class Guide right here in the thread associated with this blog post! Expect to see those shortly after we reach each goal. The bigger rewards will take a little bit of time for us to put together (especially the Audio Reward), but you should expect them in the coming weeks.

The Gauntlet event is this Sunday, May 18th, starting at around 3pm PST. We've learned you will be able to watch the event live on Twitch.tv and take part in some truly awesome auctions during the event. We hope that you tune in and cheer us on through the chat and social media. Thanks again for donating and proving that Paizo has some of the best fans in the world!

Teaching Changemakers Using Kingmaker

Thursday, April 24, 2014

My name is Ben Parkinson and I have been interested in roleplaying for most of my life. For the last five years I have been running a project in Uganda, which trains indigenous youth in Uganda to become social entrepreneurs, sometimes known as change makers. Our project is known as the Butterfly Project because it relies on the concept that nurturing youth can transform them into Butterflies, capable of changing the community in which they live and we are very proud of the young people we have been working with, most of which come from slum areas in Kampala and some from remote village areas.

I originally thought of the value of roleplaying when I was in Nigeria. Children there were using their own creativity to make games from local materials and I felt strongly that the minimal materials needed for roleplaying—just some dice and maybe a pen and paper—could be made available in village areas very easily. Similarly, children in slums have very little inspiring to do and I felt that these children I was beginning to get to know loved the creativity of monsters and were going to benefit from seeing themselves as heroes, when poverty eats away at confidence to be able to effect change.

I developed a roleplaying group in Uganda in 2010 with some youth and we started with Keep on the Shadowfell and moved through The Trollhaunt Warrens by 2013, after an enforced break in 2012. I am a fan of 4th Edition and the brightest kids enjoyed the complexity of the battles, though I felt that the game was not achieving my purpose of trying to stimulate creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, as the game was orientated more towards combat. Also, the issue became worse not better, as the players became more experienced, as everything became even more complicated in the same way and played towards the combat tactics.

I had run Crown of the Kobold King online a few years ago and I thought also starting at Level 2 might work better for the group, who, other than Joseph and Brian, had never run a roleplaying game before—more hit points meant they could make more mistakes! The game was a real hit and the kids were every session excited and enthusiastic to be there. The Kobold King wiped out the whole group except Lem and Merisiel and so they had to sell most of their treasure to pay for the resurrection bills. Then I noticed how involved they were with their characters and that they discussed their adventures with their friends in between sessions and so momentum was building.

The group wanted a new adventure, so I looked through the other adventures I owned which seemed to be suitable for a new group. We switched to W3 Flight of the Red Raven and I asked Joseph whether he would take over being GM. He agreed and ran more or less the whole adventure on his own, as he is a very bright kid and will be a future star of Uganda, given the chance. Readers should be aware that English is the third language for these children, so reading is much more of a chore for them. Most of the children living around survive on one meal a day—usually the same thing—and so it is not always obvious which sorts of activities they might enjoy. With Joseph as GM, I had wondered that maybe the group would lose interest, but actually I think interest has grown since Joseph took over—all credit to him—AND he has prompted others to believe that they can GM too.

Their enthusiasm inspired me to think more broadly and so I wondered whether we could work with some of our potential changemakers and social entrepreneurs, seeing whether we could run a more challenging thoughtful group, where they were making more human decisions, which might help them in their own development as leaders. I owned a pdf of Kingmaker and this seemed to be the ideal vehicle for this idea. So, I recruited a young leaders group, including Joseph (The GM), Brian, Patrick, Barbara, Kenneth and Oswaldo and, to further challenge them, we used some of the advanced character classes from Master of the Fallen Fortress. Joseph (14) chose the complex Summoner; Brian (13), a great roleplayer, computer trainer and problem-solver, chose Imrijka the Inquisitor; Patrick (13) who wants to be an engineer, the Alchemist; Barbara (14) who has a project empowering girls against child abuse, wanted Lini the Druid; Kenneth, who is the editor of the Acholi Quarter Youth News, chose Alhazra the Oracle; and Oswaldo, who is a Ugandan taekwondo champion, Sajjan the monk.

I didn't want the group to just focus on fighting, as had been happening previously, so we started straightaway explaining that they were going to be kings and that they had to act like leaders and that some problems would be difficult to solve and perhaps not have immediately obvious solutions. They were challenged to act as a team when preparing for the bandits right at the start and then I gave responsibilities for the mapmaking, the treasure record-keeping, the rations and timeframe and, later, the city statistics.

They were stunned at the Stag Lord's fight that one of the "bandits" seemed to be fighting on their side and this prompted them to think differently about their adversaries. They are looking for allies now, rather than adversaries, when they adventure, so that they can improve the quality of their city. Damiel was slain by a wandering shambling mound and the party rallied around to see what could be sold to bring him back. They are now looking for people who might have sighted trolls, as their city unrest plummets. However, the most interesting discussions came from when a visitor was undermining them in the city. Should we kill him? Should we discredit him? Should we banish him?

Last week, Imrijka, using his alignment detection ability, noticed a lot of evil women entering the city, so we shall see where this leads and whether they see this as a priority, or further exploration...

Kingmaker has been a backdrop, though, to an explosion in interest in roleplaying. We now have six GMs and perhaps 30 young people starting to participate in roleplaying here, so we are trying to figure out how to use what resources we have to develop an RPG timetable. Brian is also running a group entirely of girls and he has taken them through "The Deadly Mine" and I hope he will start them on Pathfinder Society Organised Play. We use figures from Descent 2, a homemade map, and various dice gathered from different places, and we use the computer or print out the pdfs when running the adventures.

The next project will be to take our GMs out into remote Northern Uganda (many are native Acholi speakers) and test the reaction from local children to the dice and adventure. Our objective will be to assess the sessions as a new and fun mechanism to assess which children might be best at making decisions, solving problems and acting for the good of all and then bring them onto our changemaker programme and they will then be taught how to solve problems in their communities.

Lastly, culture is very important in Uganda. Recent legislative changes here have demonstrated some alternative thinking and we are not about to use roleplaying to suggest or impose actions outside of the culture. We plan to continue to vet the adventures ahead of them being run too, to ensure that they are suitable for the group we are working with. The game is simply a creative stimulus, which teaches children what they are good at and enhances their life skills. By teaching young GMs how to GM, we hope we are building their confidence, helping their reading and other academic studies, helping them to be leaders and also, because a GM's role is not to kill the party, to be considerate in making the adventure fun for the players, not just for the GM! GMs will even learn problem-solving from their players, who also learn from each other and, since poverty is not negatively influencing their make believe life, finding solutions to challenges can flourish.

The Butterfly Project is funded by Chrysalis Youth Empowerment Network (CYEN), a charitable organisation based in the UK.

The website BoardGameGeek.com has been an extraordinarily fruitful discussion site for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. After its release in late August, the Rise of the Runelords base set had an epic run at #1 in the Hotness, and has stayed in the top ten ever since. It's had over half a million page views. The game just got into the all-time top 50 games and the top 5 thematic games only a couple months out of the gate. And just like the folks on the Paizo messageboards, the commenters at BGG were tremendously helpful in helping us get the wording right on an updated version of the PACG rulebook (click to download).

So we decided we'd go see the folks responsible for all that activity. Next week in Dallas, most of the development team—myself and developers Chad Brown, Tanis O'Connor, and Paul Peterson—will bring the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game to BoardGameGeek.Con. And we're doing something special with our game for the BGG crowd. We're going to play all of it.

Yup, the whole adventure path, from Burnt Offerings to The Spires of Xin-Shalast, an adventure that won't be out for six months. That's 30 straight scenarios in five days. If you want a preview of what's coming, come see us there. We'll have a signup sheet that rotates players in and out; we want as many people as possible to get a chance to see the new awesome. Plus, we'll be running demos for new players as well. Should be a blast.

So buckle up, Texas. The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is headed your way.

The auction will start at roughly 11 pm PDT on Saturday, November 16. The winner of the auction will get the game plus me. I'll either Skyping into your game session or playing with you in person if you can get to Seattle. Desert Bus is a little odd, in that everyone who wants an item puts in a nominal donation at the specific time the item is live, and then gets a chance at the prize. We'd like to raise some money for kids in hospitals and victims of domestic abuse, so if you're at all interested, click this link.

Play games. Heal kids. That's what Uncle's Games set out to do when we partnered with Paizo and others to throw one of the biggest Extra Life board gaming events in the nation. Over 200 people descended upon Redmond Town Center in Washington state with the goal of playing games for 25 hours straight. For each hour they gamed, their friends and family donated money to Seattle Children's Hospital.

Uncle's Games joined with Paizo, the hit web-series Tabletop, and many other publishers and game designers to create a gaming experience similar to that which you would typically find at a convention. The Pathfinder Society gamers began showing up an hour before the event was scheduled to start, full of enthusiasm for a marathon of roleplaying. Throughout the day other gamers came and went in waves with everyone participating in the awesome cause of playing games to help heal kids.

Boyan Radakovich, producer of Geek & Sundry's Tabletop, flew out to participate in the festivities. His goal: to beat Wil Wheaton's Season 2 win record by playing through the same games, in order. His table was full throughout the entire 15 hours it took him to play through all of Season 2. Ultimately, Wil's honor was defended as Boyan ended with the same win record, 2 wins out of 11 games.

Thanks to the generous support of Paizo and many other game industry folks, this Extra Life event featured a silent auction. There were four full tables of games and geeky items to bid on. The first table was full of games that had been signed by designers and famous people. These items included a Pathfinder RPG bag with a retail value over $300 signed by the entire team at Paizo, Star Trek Catan signed by Wil Wheaton & Jeri Ryan, and a whole host of other items.

Uncle's Games started the event with the hope of raising $1000 for Seattle Children's Hospital, but with the fantastic support of our gaming community, we were able to raise over $3000 for Seattle Children's Hospital!

While our event was a success, in that we had a ton of fun playing games with our community, the even bigger win is the record-breaking $3.8 million raised by Extra Life participants across the globe! We can't wait to do it all again next year!
