"...Don't let your guard down if it disappears; it can become unseen at will."
"It disappears? We can't lose our head!"
Seben attempts to grab on to the fanged disembodied head with all her might.
Attempt to grapple the doru with her impressive CMB of +2 with an Aid Another bonus from the Sacred Ibis:1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 2 = 23

Bite AoO vs Seben: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Bite crit damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Bite damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Poison WIS dmg: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Backup arrives in: 1d3 ⇒ 3 rounds
Barely beating the effect of the poison and ignoring her bleeding wound, Seben-en-Ra bravely dives at the Doru, grabbing hold of it with a firm grasp. However, she quickly discovers a fatal flaw in an otherwise solid plan.
The Div does not seem to like the idea of being grappled and just as Seben's fingers close tight around its wild curls, it sinks its sharp teeth into her upper arm. Crit hit on the AoO - 5 hp dmg and a new DC 13 Fort save
The div's eyes radiate pure panic as it realizes that it it captured, quite vulnerable and unable to cast most of it's natural spells. It's gaze loses focus for a few moments, as if staring off in distance thorough the roof of the manor. Then, it elects to fight its way to freedom. Squirming, it bites down and tears another deep gash into Seben's outstretched arms.
This time, the combined strain of the blood loss and poison is too much for the intrepid tomb raider. She collapses to the sand, the doru slipping from her grasp with a triumphant cry.
Standard action attack lands another hit - 5 more hp dmg and a third DC 13 Fort save. I have Seben at -2 and bleeding out.
Rather than stay and risk getting captured again, the doru spins in the air and makes a straight line up towards the open second floor balcony surrounding the courtyard.
Indus, Diorio and the Ibis can all make AoO's as the doru attempts to flee. It has already spent an AoO this turn and you can drop your weapons as free actions if you want to try a grapple without penalties for not having two free hands.
GM JaceDK
"Nnnnnnnnngh. It's got a nasty bite. Just giving you a heads up."
It is almost as if the dice gods have voices their own opinion about all these abundant puns.
GM JaceDK
That’s the spirit. Free “Intend your puns, cowards!” novelty T-shirt for Seben – if she survves…
Indus dives for the hideous head, but the doru, slick with Seben’s blood, easily evades. In mocking defiance, it spits a bloody chunk of Seben’s torn flesh at Indus’ face as it slips past him.
GM JaceDK
Lueck steps towards the doru and loosens his net. With a practiced toss, he tries to ensnarl the head.
Net attack (ranged touch), to hit 1d20+3
I’ll let you keep your roll, Lueck, but I’m waiting for Diorio to resolve an AoO. Unless he grabs the doru, it will fly to a higher position, which means some range penalties on the net attack.
GM JaceDK
Diorio's thrust is not even close to hitting the nimble div, and it zips past the agitated group to the relative safety of the air above the courtyard.
The doru is now flying about 20 ft. above the sand-filled courtyard.
Lueck, your stated action is no longer valid, as you don't have line of sight to the doru. I'll also remind you that Seben is currently unconscious and bleeding out. Sobekhotep, you are also up.
Seben, I need you to make two additional DC 13 Fort saves vs poison.
The Sacred Ibis
I am uncertain if the Sacred Ibis is waiting his turn, or if I missed him as Seben is out of commission. But just in case, the Sacred Ibis will continue with Flyby Attack Aid Anothers, giving the +2 bonus to whoever of the Bask is next in line to use it.
Aid Another attempt vs AC 10, with Animal Focus (tiger): 1d20 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 = 19
As much as the Sacred Ibis respects the Doru for putting Seben in her place, his award must be a "Wing to the Face!"
GM JaceDK
Once more, Seben manages to shake off the effect of the poison before it can take hold and dull her senses. The Ibis continues to distract the doru, leaving it open to further attack, although its current position puts it out of range for melee attacks.
Sobekhotep left to act in round 1
GM JaceDK
Beware the Biting Doru - round 2
The sound of Sobekhotep's spellcasting echoes from the dining room while the doru hovers in the courtyard, well out of reach of further grapple attempts.

Seben rises up, her hands shaking as she loads her bow.
"I'm going to need to nock this out of the park" (Do I get a bonus if it's a pun and an anachronism?)
Move action to stand.
Attempted shot with mwk longbow with cold iron arrow: 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 14
Possible damage from arrow: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Forgot to add +2 for Aid Another, but I am doubtful that will put her over the top.
GM JaceDK
Seben’s shot sails wide as the nimble doru bobs and weaves to evade it.
GM JaceDK
Lueck darts forward with his net, trying to ensnare the elusive doru.
Saved roll?
You’re acting out of turn again, Lueck. Indus and Diorio are up, followed by the doru.
Indus Ionaeus
Seeing the doru flying out of reach and taking a cue from Seben, Indus drops his melee weapon, grabs his crossbow and nocks a cold iron bolt.
I believe that's me done.
GM JaceDK
Floating in the air above the courtyard, the doru hisses an arcane incantation and vanishes from sight.
The doru cast invisibility using an innate spell-like ability.
Without any means to detect it, the Smokin' Bask Brigade can only guess at their enemy's current location.
We're still in initiative - Lueck and Sobekhotep left to act in round 2. Sobekhotep is currently casting a spell (assuming Infernal healing).
As mentioned previously, this fight is challenging, especially if you just swing your weapons without a plan. You have both the info and the tools to swing the battle in your favor, but since it's been a while in real time and I know several of you are busy IRL, I've collected a fe hints in the spoiler below.
- Lueck made his knowledge check and has told the party that this is a Doru Div and that it has DR/cold iron. There's more relevant info in the spoiler that Lueck can share when he has time to speak.
- Several of you have already switched to cold iron weapons, and Sobekhotep has offered the use of his cold iron longspear. Lueck's net could also be quite handy.
- The doru is tiny and has a high AC, but manageable CMD. Grappling is an effective tactic that also shuts down its spellcasting ability, but watch out for that AoO bite.
- When invisible, the doru has a significant tactical advantage, but attacking makes it vulnerable. Readied actions are your friends. And sight is not the only way to detect an enemy.
Seben-en-Ra
Not her turn, but Seben wants to use her Knowledge (Nobility) see if she can recollect a dark or scandalous secret about an Osirian monarch. Past or present, but with her origin, it might make the most sense if it involved Hakotep, the Pharaoh she spent her life waiting to hunt. Maybe something unknown about his work with the Dark Tapestry or his war against the Shory or even some weird sex thing. If it's juicy enough maybe that will qualify for Lueck's idea and we can tempt the Doru with it. Or better yet - if I can talk Sobek into it, she will make an Aid Another check to his Knowledge (History) check, since he's the real historical brains around here.
Knowledge (Nobility) Check Aid Another vs DC 10: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
GM JaceDK
Actually, Seben, it is your turn. We're rolling over into round 3. Your aid roll is noted if anyone wants to roll a Knowledge (Nobility) Check.
Beware the Biting Doru - round 3
The dust settles slowly in the sunbaked courtyard as a sudden silence fills the air. The doru is nowhere to be seen or heard.

The Sacred Ibis
The Sacred Ibis flies 10 feet to position itself as close as it can to the center of the room and then uses it's scent to try to pinpoint the doru.
Then, if it detects the stinky doru, it uses its remaining movement to fly at it entering its square 'painting the target', making an Aid Another attack.
Aid Another attempt vs AC 10: 1d20 + 2 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 3 + 1 = 11
Seben-en-Ra
If Seben sees the Sacred Ibis charge at something...
"Follow the bird! The bird has it!"
Seven rifles a shot into the air, hoping to strike a target where she imagines it might be.
Attempted shot with mwk longbow with Precise Shot: 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 12
Possible damage from cold iron arrow: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Man, I keep wasting all these great damage rolls... I am pretty sure that's not a hit but even if it was, I think a 50% concealment chance would further apply. If the Aid Another applies, that gets the number up to 14.
(Gulp! An immediate action to 'bolster companion' may be required here...)
GM JaceDK
The Ibis flies in a search pattern but does not indicate that it senses the doru.
Indus Ionaeus
Unable to see their assailant, Indus bends down, scoops up a big handful of sand and throws it high in the air close to where he last saw the creature, hoping the dust of sand will, at least briefly, reveal its presence.
GM JaceDK
Neither the sand, the detect magic nor the Ibis search pattern does anything to reveal the location of the doru.
As the seconds tick by, it becomes clear that whatever the elusive creature is doing, it is neither attackin or casting spells with verbal components.
Sobekhotep left in round 3, then back round to round 4. We're still in initiative, but fell free to post your next action. Seben, make sure you keep track of your hp.
GM JaceDK
Another round tics by without any movement. If you take readied (or regular) actions, make sure to state them. We’re still in initiative.
Diorio
"It certainly put great stock in this macabre scene it created. Let's see if we can enrage it some more."
Diorio moves with Lueck and uses the spear to scatter the goblets and other items, generally messing things up.
GM JaceDK
Beware the Biting Doru (and other Flying Foes) - round 4
Lueck and Diorio return to the dining room and proceed to further disturb what's left of the macabre display. I've moved your tokens on the map
Suddenly, the Sacred Ibis shrieks in alert, clearly indicating that it senses something approach.
Moments later, loud shrieking erupts from the upper floor of the manor and two disembodied heads dive into the courtyard from above.
They are not doru, although they look a bit similar, each a blackened, bat-winged fiend’s head. Tentacles dangle from chin and scalp, and their fanged mouths hangs agape. Knowledge (planes to identify the new baddies).
Indus and Seben, you may trigger your readied shots if you want. Then the entire party can act. To speed things up, I've bunched you all up in the same initiative block.

These creature are vargouilles, fiendish outsiders that hunts in darkness. They use a terrifying shriek to paralyze victims, and can kiss a helpless or paralyzed target to inflict its signature curse, which rapidly warps the victim toward becoming a new vargouille if the curse isn’t removed in time.
You also remember it has resistances typical of minor demons. Like the doru, they are tiny agile fliers, so many of the same tactics should apply.
