The nagaji do not speak Taldane, but when Vashta addresses them in Draconic, they begin to relax. One cautiously steps forward.

”You have found yourselves in a dangerous place, travelers. We are members of the Scaleseed Order—a group who works to protect nature from undead and other unnatural creatures. We have come to this isolated place after receiving word that a vampiric threat named Kannijo has been feeding on the essence of those who lived in the region. Alas, we quickly learned we lacked the skill to face Kannijo, and when our attempt to destroy the vampire succeeded only in drawing his attention, we began to despair.

“With our resources already depleted, we decided upon a desperate gamble. Hoping that Kannijo has the same revulsion of rice that many of his vampiric ilk possess, we have raised this ring of rice plants around their clearing, hoping to instill protective enchantments into it before Kannijo arrives to destroy us.

“You should stay with us for protection, for once the sun sets, Kannijo hunts. Kannijo is beyond an atrocity. We had feared he was one of us, but spurned by death to feast upon the breath of the living, but we had no idea he was once one of our glorious leaders—a naga. We must report to our leaders of this development, but such a journey can’t be made before nightfall. Please, help us to survive the night, and your place in the world beyond would surely grow the grander for your aid!”

"Aversion to rice, eh? That's good. Hopefully just one head to deal with? I suppose that's not a given, with naga."

Targrish switches to Dwarven and continues grumbling to himself as he digs through his pouch of esoterica.

The rice is a telling detail. Not the type of vampire we'd typically encounter in Garund or Avistan, I'll wager.

Religion: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (14) + 22 = 36

Orozomoc recalls tales of vampires in Tian Xia known as jiang-shi, or "hopping vampires." Though similar to other vampires—they are undead, they drain vital energy from the living, and they can be slain only in specific ways—jiang-shi feast upon the breath of the living, also known as qi or ki, instead of blood. While they possess unique powers, including their magic-deflecting paper fulus, extraordinary jumping ability, and immunity to sunlight, jiang-shi also possess unique vulnerabilities, such as the inability to see living creatures save through breathsense, a revulsion to rice and mirrors, and near-stupefying melancholia.

The nagaji shakes his head. "The sun will set soon. We dare not venture out into the jungle now. The rice is our only protection. Kannijo will come for us."

Another nagaji steps forward. "Kannijo commands the inner violence of plants themselves," he forlornly notes. "His minions will not be stopped by the rice. They will need to be dealt with. And his warped fulu is of a type we have never before encountered. A stiff square of paper depicting a humanoid figure armed with green poison." That sounds an awful lot like the image on The Snakebite.

"We must finish the ritual before sundown. Will you aid us?"

AID RICE RITUAL

A character spends the last few hours before sundown aiding the Scaleseeds in preparing the ring of rice plants by attempting a DC 23 Farming Lore or Survival check, a DC 28 Nature check, or a DC 30 Religion check.

While Aicard is unfamiliar with this specific type of vampire, he has heard and read enough about Chelish and Taldorian vampires to have a general idea of what to expect and what to do. The tiefling does as the Scaleseeds command and tries to not make a dog's breakfast out of it.

4 Rice Ritual Points gained, plus 1 from the Scaleseeds efforts, for a total of 5.

You are able to help the nagajis complete their ritual, allowing them to use their magic to foster the rice plants' growth and create a protective ring as the sun sets.

Only a few minutes after night has fully fallen, the animal sounds of the surrounding jungle suddenly go silent. The sudden stillness is heavy with anticipation.

You have a few rounds to cast preparatory spells if you desire.

Vashta does not have line of effect to Aicard while he is swallowed, so she cannot cast liberating command this round.

Orozomoc knows the flytraps can only retaliate if you strike them in melee or touch them, so firing a bow at point-blank range is safe. He does so, hitting the flytrap before moving away. Vashta pummels the plant with a hurled stone, then Aicard tears a hole in its body from within, clambering back out into the clearing!

Fortitude vs Inevitable Disaster: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (8) + 21 = 29

There is a loud cracking sound as one of the nearby trees suddenly topples over, crushing the flytrap to the ground! It twitches and lies still.

Targrish slashes his opponent twice, destroying it! Only one giant flytrap remains now. It trundles up into your midst and lashes out with its fanged leaves, grabbing up everybody but Aicard!

Cast liberating command on myself (then react to Escape) and Oro, then activate Jathoom's scarf, though that's an awfully low DC: You let the winds around you catch the edges of the jaathoom's scarf, and a jaathoom shuyookh appears with a sudden updraft. The winds force your enemies back, granting you some breathing room in battle. Each enemy in a 10-foot emanation must succeed at a DC 18 Fortitude save or be pushed 10 feet. A creature that critically fails is also knocked prone after being moved. Creatures with the air trait are immune to all these effects.

GM, Oro can use Lay on Hands to remove Paralyzed condiction with a counteract check. What is the appropriate modifier to use? For context, the ability comes from Blessed One, which allows me to take Mercy, a Champion feat.

Here's the relevant text from the CRB: When attempting a counteract check, add the relevant skill modifier or other appropriate modifier to your check against the target’s DC.
